The Cookie Crusade, Chapter 1
I bake a lot of holiday cookies. And by a lot I mean somewhere between “Hey awesome!” and “Hey, call for a mental health professional!”
But here’s the story. One of my few happy childhood memories is of my mom making Christmas cookies when I was like 6 or 7. (Later, there were no cookies. And after that, there were no prepared meals. In the end, there were times I wasn’t totally sure there would be food.)
I digress. The point is, ah, yes: my cookies. I thought that this year I would chronicle this annual project for posterity. So here goes: Cookie Crusade, Chapter 1.
It all started when I finally got around to building a grown up life of my own. I wanted that warmth, that sense of home and comfort that comes from baking. And at some point it occurred to me—I’m an adult now. That means I can make any life I want!
I started with just three different kinds of cookies. Twelve years later I am still going strong. And the project has—let us say—evolved. My husband would probably use the word metastasized. But that is just because he is a cook and not a baker and is, thus, SUPER judge-y.
But, in full-disclosure—here are the stats. This year I will bake ten varieties of cookies, two batches each (each batch is usually two dozen cookies). That works out to, yes, 480 cookies. (No, we don’t eat all of them—most become gifts).
To accomplish this feat by December 24th (my self-imposed deadline), I have to make some dough in advance and freeze it, make some cookies in advance and freeze them and then spend the last three days baking round the clock. This past weekend I made the first ones, Russian Teacakes (pictured here) because they freeze the best. But even with a well-designed plan, between work deadlines and other obligations, I will literally be baking cookies this Saturday at like 5 a.m.
I know. It is kind of insane. My husband would TOTALLY agree with you. (Don’t tell him about the 5 a.m. thing). Which is why, every year, I LIE right to his face and say I am making less cookies. I never make less cookies.
I also know that this holiday baking odyssey is not just about the cookies. (Though they are super-tasty and totally kick ass). It’s about having proof that I survived. Each year when I finish and look over a nicely arrange box of all those cookies, I am reminded that while I did not choose my past, I alone blaze the course of my future.
And you can, too. If you’re not where you want to be right now, if your life looks nothing like what you had hoped, it doesn’t have to last. If you’re young, it won’t last. This time your in—this place—it’s temporary. Soon it will be nothing but a shadow you look back on, as you spin once again toward a different kind of light.
For you it might not be an insane amount of cookies that helps you get there. It might be deciding to love honestly, or believe in yourself, or vowing to lead with kindness. Whatever bridge you build, it’s about choosing your own truth. Sooner or later, that will always get you to the life you want.
If I made it to the other side, you can too. And whether you are seven or seventeen or twenty-seven, it’s definitely never too late to try.
Now, back to those cookies…

Had a great time at the Mystery Writers of America (NY) Holiday Revels party last night. Was a wonderful event and great to see everyone. Plus, I met the very warm and gracious Lee Child and got over my fear of asking people to take a picture with me! Watch out world, I’m gonna being asking to take a picture with EVERYONE now!
