Anna was raised abroad, on a pungent mix of Latin American culture, English history and Swedish traditions. As a result she's multilingual and most of her reading is historical- both non-fiction and fiction. Possessed of a lively imagination, she has drawers full of potential stories, all of them set in the past. She was always going to be a writer - or a historian, preferably both. Ideally, Anna aspired to becoming a pioneer time traveller, but science has as yet not advanced to the point of making that possible. Instead she ended up with a degree in Business and Finance, with very little time to spare for her most favourite pursuit. Still, one does as one must, and in between juggling a challenging career Anna raised her four children on ...more

A classic is a classic is always a classic. Or?

Admit it. You’ve all experienced that mind-numbing exercise of having to read a certain book. “It’s a classic, a pillar of our literary canon,” gushed the teacher while shoving one of August Strindberg’s works in our hands. (Swedish literary canon, obviously.) Or you were handed a dog-eared copy of 1984 and told this, this was manna for the soul. (I much preferred Animal Farm. “All animals are equ

I am not quite sure why I decided to read this book. The title is not all that alluring, but a book set in the French upheaval of 1870 promised to be both educational and intriguing—and I liked the fact that Ms Tod has chosen to relate events through ...more

Betrayal by Judith Arnopp
"I've always been a fan of short stories as well as historical fiction. This anthology combines the two perfectly. The twelve stories are written by historical fiction authors and span eras from post-Roman Britain to the nineteenth/an alternative hist" Read more of this review »
His Castilian Hawk by Anna Belfrage
"His Castilian Hawk is a truly epic historical novel in every sense of the word! Set during the 13th century, it features an evil power-hungry king, a brave knight and his fair lady, and a female villain who is part of the hero’s past. As we all know," Read more of this review »

“It’s not that I’m particularly worried about growing old. Nor am I all that bothered about wrinkles, grey hair and all that. BUT. Major but. I don’t like the idea of dying – not when i have so much left to do! That, people, is the rather unwelcome realisation that strikes me now and then, namely that the number of years ahead of me are fewer than the ones behind me, and while I have ticked off a lot of items on that mental list of mine, there are so many things left. Like riding through Paris in a sports car with the warm wind in my hair, to mention one.”

“Alex had smiled at her daughter, at her obvious pride in that her man should care enough to tell her no, at her equally apparent irritation that he should presume to do so.”
Anna Belfrage, To Catch a Falling Star

“When sitting in an armchair isn't enough… I write. What I mean is that when it no longer suffices to sit and dream about travelling to other times, other places, I write about them instead. A most economical and safe form of time travel.”
