The 6th Annual No Kiss Blogfest

You know what some of the hottest parts of a romance novel are?

The parts where they don’t kiss. Think about it. All that tension, flirting, those not-quite-accidental touches, the teasing, and you’re just about to explode because why haven’t they kissed yet, damn it? Epic build up, which makes the ultimate kiss that much better when it happens.

no kiss

Here is a no kiss excerpt from my upcoming New Adult book releasing in April 2015 with Entangled Publishing:

THE HANDLER

Book Two in The Noir et Bleu MC Series

At one o’clock in the morning, Lincoln’s eyelids drooped heavily and she yawned every two seconds.

I walked over to her. “Hey, you can barely keep your eyes open. Let’s go.”

She leaned her head on my shoulder and mumbled, “I can’t go until Hal says.”

Hal was lounged on a couch with a bottle of Jack Daniels in one hand and a chesty blonde on his knee. “Screw Hal. He didn’t just perform for two hours. I say it’s time for you to go to sleep.”

Her hand slid into mine and she let me lead her away. Tim opened the backstage door for us and spoke into the headset to let Stan and Aaron know we were on the move. Hal obviously noticed because he shouted, “Cain!”

I didn’t stop. I rushed Lincoln along the concrete corridor towards the ramp that lead to the stadium airlock.

Footsteps followed us. We ran and were already near the tour bus when Hal shouted again, “Hey, Cain.”

With my hands rested on her hips, I guided Lincoln up the steps ahead of me then closed the door behind us, which made her laugh. “You’re going to give him an aneurism making him chase us.”

I chuckled and watched through the window as he jogged closer. “Whatever. It’s good for him to get some exercise.”

He opened the door, climbed the steps, panting. “Hey. You can’t, uh.” He sucked in a heavy breath. “There are more sponsors on their way.” He coughed. “They want to meet Lincoln.”

I blocked him from fully entering the bus. “She’s been up for almost thirty hours. She’s done. If they wanted to meet her they should have shown up before one in the morning.”

He produced a lame attempt at a puppy dog face. “Linny, you can do another half an hour, right?”

She bit her bottom lip. I waited for her to speak up, but she just stood there. I finally answered for her, “You hired me to take care of her. She’s tired. Do you want me to do my job or not?”

Hal’s face turned the same purple color as the day of the video shoot. Sweat rolled down his temple in unnatural amounts. “She has responsibilities.”

“Yeah, to perform. She just did that and she did an unreal job. She did enough ass kissing with greasy old dudes in suits while you sat around with a whore riding your leg. She’s done for tonight.”

He pointed at my chest and his spit sprayed out when he yelled, “Listen, you little punk, I make the decisions around here. Don’t piss me off.”

“Don’t piss me off or I’ll walk.” I swiped his hand away. “At this point, she’ll probably walk with me.”

He glared at me then glanced at Lincoln. She was struggling to keep her watery eyes open.

I stretched my arm across her shoulder and said to Hal, “My suggestion is that you tell her what a great job she did and say good night.”

After a tense pause, he asked her, “Do you want to go to sleep?”

She nodded wearily.

“Okay.” He leaned forward and kissed her on the forehead. “You were amazing tonight. Have a good sleep.” He eyeballed me in a cautionary way then left.

I checked her expression, but couldn’t tell how she was feeling. “Are you okay?”

“Yes,” she said tentatively. Then, as if she was nervous to hear my answer, she looked down and asked, “Do you really think I did an unreal job?”

I ran my fingertip along her jaw and lifted her chin. She saw my expression and must have known without a doubt how I felt. My pulse raced as I stared at her mouth. Her eyes widened and her lips parted slightly as she waited for my response. Under any other circumstances it would have been the perfect moment to kiss her, but no matter how much I wanted to, I couldn’t take the risk. I leaned in and brushed my cheek against hers before I whispered in her ear, “You blew me away.”

She wrapped her arms around my neck and I pulled her in tightly to hug her. “Thank you.” Her body relaxed into mine. “For everything.”

We stood that way for a while with her heart beating against my chest. It was the most comforting feeling that I had ever felt.

Eventually, she stepped back and smiled, almost shyly. “Night.”

I nodded, not wanting the moment to end. It had to though, so I said, “Night.” I watched her disappear into her bedroom. Then I exhaled in an attempt to remind my body that I worked for her.

One day handled. Forty-two days to go. It wasn’t going to be easy.

Cover Reveal: BECAUSE YOU EXIST by TIFFANY TRUITT

BecauseYouExist_Amazon

Life is good for LOGAN MIDDLETON.

He’s quarterback of the Shepherd High football team, nephew of the town’s most successful lawyer, and boyfriend of Jenna Maples, a girl who has finally agreed to take their relationship to the next level. But nothing good lasts forever.

With only a few minutes of last period English left between him and a weekend alone with Jenna, Logan blacks out. When he awakens, he finds himself in a future where Shepherd High lies in ruins, nothing is what it seems, and everyone he loves is dead.

Logan is a shifter.

Chosen to travel through time, it’s up to him to figure out how to stop the terrible events that claimed his once perfect life. Of course, all of this might be easier if he wasn’t paired with the one girl who’d rather see him dead than help him, JOSEPHINE.

A girl he tormented during childhood. Strong-willed with biting wit, who lives in the shadows. Tough and dark, Jo is Shepherd High’s most notorious outcast and Logan’s opposite in every way.

Together the two must overcome their many differences to figure out why they’ve been selected for such an overwhelming task, and who selected them in the first place.

Before it’s too late…

#YAReaderWeek First Look Friday with Author Lisa Brown Roberts

Lisa Brown Roberts header

Thanks Danielle for hosting me for First Look Friday! I’m working on several YA books right now, in various stages of drafting, revising, and editing. Today’s “First Look” is from HOW TO DROP A CLASS (AND FALL IN LOVE), which releases in February 2015 from Entangled Teen. This is the scene where my heroine, Darcy, first meets the hero, Lucas.

“So.” My uncle talked with his back to me, pouring sugar into his coffee mug. “You need cash, and you have some valuable items you’re willing to part with.” He faced me, serene and smiling now. “We might have some other options.”

A tiny lick of hope dashed up my spine. “Really?”

“Sure.” He turned and called out toward the curtains in the back of the store. “Lucas! Come on out here, please.”

There was a clatter that sounded like tools being dropped, and the curtains parted once more. One seriously hot guy emerged, wiping his hands on a greasy rag. He had shoulder-length dark hair that partially hid his face, but what I could see of it was incredible. He was tall. Lean but not skinny, with sinewy muscles evident everywhere I tried not to look.

He walked toward us, grinning. “Yeah, boss? What’s up?”

“Lucas, this is my niece, Darcy. Darcy, this is Lucas Martinez, the best fix-it guy in town. He’s kind of a pain in the ass, but so am I, so it works out.”

They both laughed while I tried not to stare at Lucas like a dog in heat. I clenched my fingers, digging my nails into my palms. Get a grip, I told myself. Snap out of it and don’t act like a dorky twelve-year-old.

I tugged at my ponytail, wishing I’d bothered to at least put on mascara. “Hi.”

“Hey,” said Lucas, and he glanced at Charlie. “Your niece, huh? Cool.” He smiled at me, one corner of his mouth quirking up. His voice was sexy, too. Low and smoky. He perched on the stool next to me. Toby perked up and looked at Lucas, wagging his tail. Lucas leaned over to pet him, then raised his eyes to meet mine.

“Cool dog. What’s his name?”

I forced myself to look directly into his eyes. That was a mistake. They were the most amazing color—or colors. Green, blue, and silver all mixed together somehow, and he had those ridiculously long, dark eyelashes that girls were always jealous of.

“Toby,” I said after a three-second delay.

“So.” Lucas looked at Charlie, then back at me. “What do you need fixed? You don’t look like the kind of girl who shops at thrift stores.”

“Lucas…” Charlie sounded like every teacher I’ve ever known when they used their “stern warning” voice.

Lucas laughed. “I’m just sayin’…”

Just saying what? That I looked like a rich girl who didn’t need help? What did he know about me or my falling-apart life?

Lucas read my face. He put up his hands. “Sorry. I didn’t mean to offend, really. It’s just—”

Charlie shot him a look, and he shut up.

“Look,” I said, “whatever you think about me, I need some money and I need it fast. This is all I’ve got.” I lifted the lid off the hatbox and slid it down the counter toward him. “Can you help me?”

#YAReaderWeek Young Adult Reader Appreciation Week: Woman Crush Wednesday

Author: Shannon Lee Alexander

new_Love_and_Other_Uknown_Variables_1600x2400Meet the new girl in Love and Other Unknown Variables, Charlotte Finch, dedicated artist and connoisseur of life. She’s new in town, having just moved over the summer with her older sister Jo Finch. Jo dragged Charlotte here because of the great opportunities the town afforded them—a new job at Brighton School of Mathematics and Science for Jo, proximity to a university, research hospital, cultural arts, and a more diverse population than their small mountain town had to offer. Not that Charlotte is complaining. She’s enjoying the mystery of being the new girl. Sometimes a new beginning is just what the doctor ordered.

Have you ever been the new girl? What advice would you give someone starting fresh at a new high school? Tweet your thoughts, and be sure to tag me @shanlalexander and use the #LoveAndOtherUnknownVariables hashtag. A winner will be chosen at random to receive a Teal Toes prize pack. Teal Toes is an organization dedicated to spreading ovarian cancer awareness, a cause near and very dear to my heart.

Love and Other Unknown Variables releases from Entangled Publishing October 7, 2014.

Charlie Hanson has a clear vision of his future. A senior at Brighton School of Mathematics and Science, he knows he’ll graduate, go to MIT, and inevitably discover the solutions to the universe’s greatest unanswerable problems. He’s that smart. But Charlie’s future blurs the moment he reaches out to touch the tattoo on a beautiful girl’s neck.

The future has never seemed very kind to Charlotte Finch, so she’s counting on the present. She’s not impressed by the strange boy pawing at her until she learns he’s a student at Brighton, where her sister has just taken a job as the English teacher. With her encouragement, Charlie orchestrates the most effective prank campaign in Brighton history. And in doing so, he puts his own future in jeopardy.

By the time he learns Charlotte is ill—and that the pranks were a way to distract Ms. Finch from Charlotte’s illness—Charlotte’s gravitational pull on Charlie is too great to overcome. Soon he must choose between the familiar formulas he’s always relied on, or the girl he’s falling for (at far more than 32 feet per second).

#YAReaderWeek Young Adult Reader Appreciation Blog Hop: Transformation Tuesday

YA Catherine Stine

Author: Catherine Stine,
also writing romance as Kitsy Clare

Transformation Tuesday-paths to publication

I’m a hybrid author. I’ve published with big companies (Random House, Scholastic), smaller digital firsts (Inkspell, Evernight Teen), and I’ve indie published with my Konjur Road Press label. It’s all good! I love the freedom and power that comes with indie publishing: choosing my dream team, cover artist, editor and setting my own deadlines and launch dates. But the distribution strength of a large established press is also quite alluring.

My latest ventures are with Inkspell and Evernight Teen and I think these newer, global digital first companies offer perhaps, the best of both worlds. I have a say in the cover art, yet they help get word out and have established Facebook groups, blogs and promo liaisons.

My two newest novels are Private Internship, the second in my new adult Art of Love series, about sexy, ambitious artists in New York City (launching Sept 29 with Inkspell) and Dorianna, my YA horror (launching October 24 with Evernight Teen). Dorianna is a fresh twist on Oscar Wilde’s A Picture of Dorian Gray, and a cautionary tale for the Internet generation. My new adult fiction is written using my pen name, Kitsy Clare, and my YA novels are written using Catherine Stine.

I wasn’t sure I’d like having a pen name, but I really do. It gives me the freedom to really branch out into the world of writing for teens, yet also for the twenty-something and older crowd. Kitsy is my real nickname so it doesn’t feel entirely alien to me. A pen name does mean more work in branding and on social media, but it’s worth it.

It took me a while to get to publication because I was a visual artist first, showing my work in galleries, and I had a serious career underway. But I had a compelling desire to tell stories and I was always writing on the side, even when I was doing art. I decided, about ten years ago, to stop painting, in order to focus only on writing. It’s hard when you have more than one craft that compels you. In addition to writing, I teach part time now at an art college—a workshop in writing speculative fiction. I love my art students, and how they write in such visual ways. The two methods of expression are deeply intertwined. So, I fulfill my arty interests in my creative writing classes. Also, I illustrated my two YA futuristic thrillers, Fireseed One and Ruby’s Fire. Big fun!

A final word about publishing: any way you publish can be the perfect way. Just make sure you’ve written a fully entertaining book that is flawlessly edited.

Best of luck in your journey.

My Bio:

Kitsy Clare hails from Philly and lives in Manhattan. A romantic at heart, she loves writing about the sexy intrigue of the city and of the art world. She knows it well, having shown her paintings here before turning to writing. Model Position, her new adult novella is about artist Sienna and her friends. Living in a Bookworld says: “Beautifully written! We learn things about art & painting. A colorful story from a promising author.” The next in The Art of Love series, Private Internship launches Sept 29 with Inkspell.

Kitsy also writes YA as Catherine Stine. Her futuristic thriller, Ruby’s Fire was a YA finalist in the Next Generation Indie book awards. Fireseed One, its companion novel, was a finalist in YA and Sci-Fi in the USA News International Book Awards, and an Indie Reader notable. Her YA horror, Dorianna, launches fall 2014 with Evernight Teen.

Thanks so much for hosting me! It’s always so fun to get to visit new places around the web :) Today we’re supposed to be sharing our man crushes, which should be lots of fun. I’ll admit, in real life, I only have one real crush–my husband of 12 years. We’ve been through some crazy times together and I’m grateful for all that he does.

Just because I love hubby doesn’t mean I don’t get book crushes! Some of my male characters in the books I write are probably the top ones for me, but I did have the pleasure of reading UNSPEAKABLE by Michelle Pickett, and let’s just say that Brody makes one amazing book crush! Highly, highly recommend checking that book out and seeing why when it releases next February! You won’t regret it.

And of course, there’s Ian Somerhalder…yeah, not so hard to look at.

Let’s hear it: who is your man-crush? Or book crush? :)
