“The Muscle and the Eye” to be Published by the Southeast Review

I am ecstatic to let you know that my story “The Muscle and the Eye” will appear in a forthcoming issue of The Southeast Review!  I’m honored to be included in such a fine publication.  My story, they tell me, will be part of the fall issue.

Check out the current issue, too, because my good friend Jennifer M. Colatosti has a piece appearing in it.

 

Upcoming Reading with Paging Columbus

I will be reading some prose (and perhaps poetry) at the upcoming Paging Columbus reading on November 6th from 6-8 p.m. at the OSU Urban Arts Space in Columbus, Ohio. The theme is “Appetite, Hunger, and Craving,” a perfect subject for the first gnawings of winter.

“What makes your stomach or your soul growl? Amuse your bouche and brain at Paging Columbus: Appetite, Hunger, and Craving on Thursday, November 6. Tempting you with literary delicacies will be Colleen Morrissey, Maggie Smith, and Okla Elliott.  As usual, our event runs from 6-8 PM at OSU Urban Arts Space, with readings hot off the griddle at 6:30.  There will of course be light refreshments, refreshing company, and absolutely delicious poetry, prose, and art.”

O. Henry Prize Stories 2014 Drops Today!

It’s O. Henry day! My story “Good Faith” is in very good company in the anthology. 

Please pick up a copy from your local store (but if you’re in Omaha, Nebraska, don’t go to the Crossroads Barnes & Noble because my mom’s already cleaned them out), or read the introduction and buy it here.

O. Henry Prize Anthology 2014 Drops Next Week

A week from today, the day after my birthday, the O. Henry Prize 2014 anthology drops, with my story “Good Faith” appearing in it. I would be much obliged if you would pre-order online or from your local store or just wait to pick it up next Tuesday. I’ve read some of the other stories that will be appearing in it, and they make it far worth the very good price.

Reading with Harpur Palate in NY

Sorry about the short notice, but the folks at Harpur Palate were nice enough to have me on the program for their reading tomorrow (Friday the 20th) night at The Lost Dog Lounge in Binghamton, New York at 9 p.m. I’ll be reading from “Good Faith,” so I hope that if you’re in the area, you’ll come by!

O. Henry Prize Stories 2014 Announced

As a follow-up to my last, very exciting announcement: The full table of contents for the 2014 O. Henry Prize Stories has been announced.  You can read about the collection in Publishers Weekly (which has the new volume’s cover), the L.A. Times, Publishers Marketplace, and Mediabistro.

Needless to say, I am incredibly honored to be among such good company.

The anthology will be released by Anchor Books on September 9, but you can pre-order it here.  You can also read the story that will be included in the collection, “Good Faith,” in its original publication in the Cincinnati Review, Issue 9.2.

“Good Faith” to be in O. Henry Prize Stories 2014!

I’ve had to sit on this incredibly exciting news for months now, and I can finally share: My story “Good Faith” will be included in The O. Henry Prize Stories 2014!

The full table of contents hasn’t been released yet, so there is no official announcement for me to link you to, but you can go ahead and pre-order the anthology from Random House, due out in September.

There will be more fun things like my thoughts on the story and being included in the anthology, to be released by the PEN/O. Henry folks in the coming months.  I will keep you updated.

The story was originally published in The Cincinnati Review, issue 9, volume 2 (Winter 2013), so check them out if you can’t wait for the anthology.

Panel at TW New Orleans Lit Festival This Friday!

Brushing up on my French before heading tomorrow to the Tennessee Williams Literary Festival!

I will be reading from and discussing my short story “Loveland,” selected as the first runner-up in the Tennessee Williams Fiction Contests at the Winners’ Panel, along with judges Victor LaValle and Emily Raboteau as well as the contest winner and a finalist at 10 a.m. on Friday, March 21st at the Hotel Monteleone in the Queen Anne Ballroom.  You can buy all-access passes to get you into everything at this fantastic festival, or you can purchase a panel pass, which will provide you access to all the panels, along with a number of other options here.

“Loveland” named as First Runner-Up in Tennessee Williams Fiction Contest

I have had the very great honor of my short story “Loveland” recently being selected as the first runner-up in the Tennessee Williams Fiction Contest, sponsored by the Tennessee Williams Literary Festival!  The winners were selected by the very talented authors Victor LaValle and Emily Raboteau.  You can read the official announcement here, but here’s a peak:

Our judges said they had a hard time determining the Grand Prize and First Runner-Up, that the two stories “were just excellent in so many, and so many different, ways.”

The organizers of the festival have also kindly invited me to speak about the story at a panel at the festival this year in New Orleans, so please do come by if you’re going to the festival or are in the area!  My panel is at 10 a.m. on Friday, March 21st at the Hotel Monteleone in the Queen Anne Ballroom.  You can buy all-access passes to get you into everything at what looks like it’s going to be an absolutely fantastic festival, or you can purchase a panel pass, which will provide you access to all the panels, along with a number of other options here.

As teased yesterday, my story “I Know Who Likes You” is now available to listen and download via the Monkeybicycle website, or subscribe to the podcast for more fiction and nonfiction readings!

The story is serendipitously appropriate for New Year’s Day, when you might be looking back on your regrets from the second grade.
