The most beautiful things happen when you least expect them.
It started as a simple assignment for Aussie bush guide Dave Taylor – escort a lone Englishman in quest of an unknown species of butterfly. However Nicholas Goring is no ordinary tourist, his search is far from straightforward, and it’s starting to look as if the butterflies don’t want to be found. As Dave teaches Nicholas everything he needs to survive in the Outback he discovers that he too has quite a bit to learn – and that very often the best way to locate something really important is just not to want to find it…

Excerpt from Butterfly Hunter
They were silent while Dave led his client out to the car park, paid off his ticket, found the car and put the bags in the boot, insisting in a mutter that he didn’t need Goring’s assistance.
It wasn’t until they were heading into the city on Kingsford Smith Drive that Dave finally spoke. “I’ll take you to the hotel. I booked it with an early check–in. I’m sure you’ll be glad of a shower and change of clothes.” When he risked a glance at the man, Dave was disconcerted to find that Goring’s smile once again had a wicked kick to it. “Um,” said Dave, “sir…”
“I always had a thing for chauffeurs,” the man confided.
“Huh.” Dave frowned, and stared very hard at the road ahead, though he wasn’t entirely sure how much he was actually seeing. “Well. What do you do when they don’t have a thing for you?”
Goring chuckled, sounding genuinely amused. “Ah, come on. Seize the day!”
“Mate, life’s not that short.”
The chuckle turned into a laugh – and Dave liked that. Still, he was relieved when Goring said, “All right, I’ll stop. Don’t mind me. I hardly got a wink of sleep on that damned plane.”
“You weren’t exactly travelling cattle class. Were you?”
“No, but …” Goring looked away, biting at his lower lip. He was a tall, scrawny man, and his lips were the plumpest thing about him. They were a dash of pink on his pale face. They were almost pretty. “Too much on my mind, I suppose.”
Dave let a beat go by, and then headed for safer ground. “Common wisdom is to stay awake for as long as you can today, and try not to sleep until tonight. Get into the new time zone as soon as you can.”
“Yes, so I’ve heard.”
“And I find that people like to start with a good breakfast, to keep their energy levels up. The hotel – you’re at the Hilton – is known for their breakfasts.”
“I see.”
“It’s up to you, but I’ll keep you company, if you like. For as much of the day as suits.”
“Starting with breakfast … ?”
“If you like,” Dave repeated. “And later, if you have people here, I can drop you off wherever. Just tell me what you want to do and then, you know, feel free to change your plans if you can’t stay awake any longer or whatever.”
Goring was staring at him. “I understand.” After a moment, he added, “I don’t know why I was expecting laconic rather than loquacious.”
Dave glanced at him. “Dunno if I’m your typical Aussie, mate.”
Another laugh, though wry this time rather than genuine. Then Goring asked, “Will Mr Taylor be able to join us for breakfast?”
“What?” Dave grimaced as he turned right onto Albert Street. They were almost there. “No, I’m – I’m Dave Taylor.”
“Oh.”
“I guess I didn’t – No, I didn’t introduce myself. The meeting at the airport didn’t, uh –”
“Didn’t quite go as planned,” Goring smoothly supplied.
“No. My fault. Look, we’re here,” Dave said. “I’ll drop you off, and you can check in while I park.”
“No need. I’ll stay with you.”
Dave glanced at him, and thought that Goring wasn’t merely being polite. In any case, he needed to decide right away, as he was already approaching the car park. He nodded, and flipped on the indicator. So be it. Almost nothing this morning had gone as intended, so why not this as well?
They were silent again as Dave collected a ticket, and then quickly chose an empty space on the ground floor – it was still too early to be busy. Once he’d parked, they both got out, and met around the back of the car. Dave looked the man in the eye, and held his hand out. “Good morning, uh, sir. I’m Dave Taylor.”
Goring shook his hand with a cool firmness before disengaging. “I’m pleased to meet you, Mr Taylor. Call me Nicholas.”
“Dave.”
“David,” said Nicholas.
Dave grinned, and turned to open the boot, started lifting the three bags out. “All right, but no one calls me that. It’s Dave or – well, my friends call me Davey.”
“Would you join me for breakfast, David?”
“Sure. Thanks,” he added, quite genuinely. “We can talk over your trip. I’ve brought maps and such.”
“Good. Here, let me –”
But Dave only handed over the cabin–sized bag, and insisted on wheeling the larger cases. “I’ve got it,” he said. He attempted the three syllables as they emerged into sunlight: “Nicholas.” He wondered how long it would be before he was allowed to go with Nick or Nicky.
“Thank you.” The man’s smile was a little gentler by now.
Of course it had all gone horribly wrong so far, and God only knew what that meant for the rest of the trip, but it seemed that at least Dave had been forgiven for his part of the shambles. He nodded, both accepting and returning the thanks. Nicholas seemed to understand. As they walked shoulder to shoulder into the hotel, Dave dared to think the next three months mightn’t be a complete disaster.

Blurb
Matt is sexy, single, and fabulous. His career at a fancy magazine is going from strength to strength. He has great friends, a nice flat, and a healthy bank account. Life is wonderful.
In truth, Matt is unhappy. Convinced he’s not worthy of love, he flits from club to bar, in search of temporary amnesia from the demon on his shoulder that tells him he’s never going to find “the one”. Which is ironic, because his heart already belongs to the one man he knows he can never have—his straight best friend, Zeke.
Zeke has always dated women. He can’t fathom why he’s so upset about Matt’s latest lover, the wildly successful and attractive Dieter, but refuses to accept that he’s jealous, because to do that, he might have to do some soul-searching of his own.
Meeting Dieter turns Matt’s ordered life on its head, and opens Matt’s mind to the possibility that he can make a meaningful connection. However, to take a gamble on love, Matt has to learn to trust people with his secrets. And, more importantly, to overcome his shame regarding the one part of him he refuses to change. If he can’t – or won’t – learn to love himself, it’s doubtful anyone else will see the real man behind the mask.
The only question is whether he’s brave enough.

Excerpt
The hairs on the back of his neck lifted; he was coming closer. The thick carpet muffled his steps, but Matt’s internal compass had apparently shifted and now only had one direction.
Sørensen didn’t speak as he approached, and Matt didn’t move from his position, concentrating furiously on a Porsche as it made several attempts to parallel park. Then his breathing hitched as a hand landed on his shoulder.
“I think you should call me Dieter.”
“Okay.” It was an effort to force the two syllables out. Still neither of them moved. The air between them crackled and Matt swallowed. He wasn’t imagining it now; Sørensen – Dieter – was interested. He raised his eyes a fraction and risked checking the reflection in the glass. Before he could process anything, he was suddenly moving, then his back was pressed against the window as a mouth came down on his and his vision blurred.
Dieter kissed without mercy, his lips hot and hard and insistent. Matt barely had time to register that he tasted of mint before a tongue demanded entry, forcing rather than coaxing, and any resistance he might have summoned crumbled under the assault. He moaned and his head fell back, at the same time as his hands rose to grip the lapels of Dieter’s suit jacket to tug him closer.
A hand grasped the back of his head and strong fingers raked through his hair. Matt responded by sliding his arms under Dieter’s jacket and clawing at the fine material of his shirt, desperate to find skin. Pulling back suddenly, Dieter tore off the offending jacket, letting it drop to the floor, then did the same with Matt’s leather one, before mashing their mouths together once more. He ground into Matt, every roll of his hips sparking nerve endings that screamed for release as the pressure grew.
Matt didn’t usually kiss much. Frantic gropes in the dark corners of clubs didn’t lend themselves to more than getting off as quickly as possible, and he wasn’t yet sure he was in the market for romance, but something about the way Dieter tried to consume him was addictive. He couldn’t get enough. Air wasn’t necessary; getting more of everything, was. He realised he’d moaned again, and the noise evidently pleased Dieter. “Let me get you off,” he murmured, “are you close?”
Matt was close, too close. He turned his head suddenly, smacking it against the cool glass. Releasing his hold on Dieter, he pressed the heel of one hand against his groin, then used the other as a shield, palm up against Dieter’s chest. He could feel the galloping heartbeat under his fingers and the thought that Dieter was similarly affected pleased him.
“Gissa moment,” he choked out, willing his erection to subside enough to allow him to think.
To his credit Dieter didn’t crowd him, but his eyes were puzzled. “You don’t want to come?”
Matt laughed, a small, pained sound. “Yeah, but not in my clothes.”
Dieter smiled. “We can rectify that simply. But I think perhaps we are the same size. It would have been no trouble to lend you something. Come to bed with me, Matt.” He tipped forward and pressed their foreheads together gently, a direct contrast to his previous full-on attack. “You do want to?”
“Fuck, yeah. But not tonight.”
“Because?”
Because if we do that, you’ll think I’m a fucking weirdo and ditch me before we get as far as the bed. “You took me by surprise. Also, it’s not very professional if I’m going to be working for you.”
About the Author
Karrie George considers caffeine the most important food group. She’d like to think of herself as delightfully eccentric, but has grudgingly accepted that “socially awkward weirdo” is nearer the mark. Books and music have been the backdrop to her life so far, and she sees no reason for this to ever change.
Karrie lives in the wilds of Scotland with a long-suffering spouse and several children. The voices in her head are great at encouraging her to leave the dust bunnies in favour of playing with plot bunnies. Possibly unrelated, she owns a number of pristine dusters.

After half a lifetime spent in short-term liaisons that allowed no intimacy, charismatic Irish police officer, Colin Campbell, found the love of his life. Dark-eyed, steady Joshua Abrams burned through Colin’s emotional barriers and taught him to look at life through new eyes, eyes that made room for the love and closeness he had always denied himself. Deeply in love and completely happy, their life together remains idyllic and their fiery passion for each other seems limitless.
They survive the Charlottesville ‘Unite the Right’ riots, though not without scars. But later that month Colin’s position with the campus police force places him in charge of an informant program designed to crack a dangerous drug ring. Fully aware of the risks, he swears to Joshua that he will oversee the program without becoming directly involved. But Colin’s promise begins to crumble when he becomes the only one who can save a young Nigerian exchange student from a deadly drug lord.
Excerpt
The morning of the ‘Unite the Right’ riots in Charlottesville.
Joshua poured a cup of coffee and took the seat next to Colin. “I damn joined the counter-protesters last night.”
Colin wheeled to face him, his eyes narrowed to dark slits. “Do not do that!” He grasped Joshua’s arm in a tight grip. “I mean it, Josh. Do not come down there!”
“It was a fleeting impulse which David immediately quashed. He told me he’d stop me if he had to tie me to a chair.”
“Thank god,” Colin said, still gripping Joshua’s arm tightly. “Josh, I mean it. Please stay home. I understand why you want to join the counter-protestors and fight these Nazi bastards and I love you for it. But it’s going to get ugly down there today, Josh. Very ugly. Especially for someone with your ethnic heritage. Knowing you’re safe at home is the only way I’ll be able to do my job.”
Joshua frowned, but nodded. “I understand.” He leaned forward to kiss Colin’s cheek. “If you promise to hang onto your phone and to call me when you can.”
“I will,” Colin told him. “But don’t worry too much if you don’t hear from me. I suspect I’m going to have my hands full.”
“How bad could it get today, Colin?” Joshua asked.
Colin’s brow furrowed. “You know what we’re dealing with. I’m afraid it could get very bad today.”
A rustling at their back door startled both of them, and they turned to see David and Nate walking through their utility room carrying bags obviously filled with food.
“We brought breakfast!” Nate told them, setting the bags on the table. “Get some plates.”
Colin rose. “I can’t stay, I’m due at the station.” He bent over the table and sniffed the contents. “Smells good though!”
David took Colin’s hand in both of his. “Please be safe.”
Colin nodded but did not speak then turned to accept Nate’s hug. “Thanks,” he whispered.
“Don’t worry about Josh. We’ll be with him.”
Colin nodded then turned to Joshua who stood watching, teeth clenched against the dread that filled his mind and heart.
“Gotta go, babe,” Colin said.
Joshua walked to his side, wrenching his mind away from his fears, resolved that Colin’s last view of him today would reflect his faith in the man he loved and the courage to face whatever this day might bring.
They embraced tightly but neither man spoke. Then Colin drew in a deep breath and kissed Joshua lightly… briefly. “Chin up, bud,” he said. “Be home later.”
“Please be safe,” Joshua said, his voice a hoarse whisper.
“Always my intention,” Colin replied with a quick grin, then his expression grew grim. “Remember what I said, Joshua. No matter what you see… stay home!”
Joshua hissed out a breath, his mind burned with reservations. But he couldn’t bring himself to add to the stresses already weighing on his lover and gave a tight nod. “Got it.”
Colin bent toward him, his lips brushing Joshua’s ear. “Ta`mo chori istigh ionat,” he whispered, Gaelic for ‘my heart is within you’, a phrase Joshua knew well.
“Ani Ohev Otcha,” Joshua choked out, responding with the same words in Hebrew.
Without another word, Colin wheeled and strode out the back door. He didn’t see Joshua sink into a kitchen chair and collapse forward, the heels of both hands pressed to his forehead.
About the Author
My name is Janice Jarrell. I am a retired grandmother who lives in Seattle, WA. I have two children and three grandsons. I’ve been writing gay romance since I was twelve years old, only back then it wasn’t called ‘gay romance’. In fact, it had no name at all. It was the fifties, and it was worth your life to admit to being gay, let alone confess to being a girl who constantly fantasized about relationships between gay men. Hell, I didn’t even know what a homosexual was. I lived on a farm out in the sticks in a tiny Michigan village and I’d never, to my knowledge, even heard the word. I just knew I loved the thought of boy on boy romance. I just knew that there was something hot going on between Tom Corbett and his Space Cadets and all those guys on ‘Combat’.
I wrote slash fanfiction for 30 years, writing over 337 stories, some as short as 100 words (a drabble) some as long as a series which was over 119,012 words. I enjoy writing my stories. I enjoyed the feedback I received from my readers. It was a creative release I’d been searching for my entire life and I blessed the Internet for leading me to this artistic oasis for my spirit.
Love’s Magic was my very first step into writing my own characters. I will always be grateful the slash fanfiction community for nurturing the budding author until she was ready to blossom into a fully realized novelist. It’s been an amazing thing to watch the gay community’s growth over these past twenty years. My own journey has echoed theirs in many ways, and I’m grateful to all those gay activists who fought to give the gay community the rights and privileges they always deserved.
I’m also grateful to the gay romance community, readers, authors, publishers and promoters, who are making these, my retirement years, the most creative ones of my life. When I’m not writing, I’m traveling, walking, hiking, knitting, crocheting, and weaving.
I’m very excited about the upcoming release of my second contemporary gay romance novel, Love’s Trials. Those of you who fell in love with Joshua and Colin in Love’s Magic are in for a treat because they are the STARS of Love’s Trials, though they may not thank me for it given the very difficult ‘trials’ they are about to face.

Announcements and Upcoming Projects: Espejos
Hey folks. Been a long time since I’ve updated this blog, hasn’t it. A lot has been going on in my life, both in my personal and work realms. But I finally have a minute to breath and give some announcements regarding some upcoming projects.
First with the big news: Espejos, the first in my South Texas Lore series of interconnected paranormal stories, has been picked up by Less Than Three Press. I just signed the contract today, and overjoyed that it will be in both print and ebook. This one is a bit different from my other work in that it’s a bit darker in tone. I still have some light touches, but I was also going for a truly spooky feel. I’ll share more information as the process moves along.
This one is particular book is very dear to me. I’ve mentioned in the past how I have wanted to get back in touch with my Latinx heritage, since I spent so many years denying who was in more ways than one. That is why I have decided to take the folk tales I heard as a young boy in South Texas and update them for the gay romance/mm romance genres. There’s a whole bunch of them, so be on the lookout for more stories in the series.
I’m currently outlining the next one. My plan is to take a side character from each book and have them continue the series with a new paranormal situation. That way they can be standalone, but with some cohesion (if that makes sense).
Well, that’s all for now. What are you all working on?

WIP Update: New Title and Series
Greetings all. I just thought I would hop on here and make a quick WIP update. I had to take a break from one I was doing originally a decided to work on another paranormal romance in the meantime. As of yesterday, I finished my first draft, and am currently editing so I can send it out. The working title is “Espejos,” and it will be part of a new series called “South Texas Lore.” As many of you know, I am trying to connect to my Mexican heritage, so I thought that adapting some of the legends that I heard growing up would help. This one is a labor of love, and already have some of the others planned out. More details to come!!!!

Update: Pharaoh’s Kiss release, Upcoming Holiday Short, and Current WIPs
Hey there everyone, I have a lot to go over today. Some very exciting stuff is happening, stuff I can’t wait for you all to see. So let’s get to it, shall we?
Pharaoh’s Kiss (Timeless #2) Release
The release date for Pharaoh’s Kiss is coming up very soon. So mark your calendars for August 4th. It’s a short, but one that’s very near to my heart. As I’ve said in previous posts, it was part of the first series I ever attempted to write. While it wasn’t the most polished, I was still proud of the fact that I put my work out there. Now it’s been updated and re-edited, and hopefully you all will enjoy it.
Upcoming Holiday Short
I’ve been wanting to write a Christmas-based holiday short for a while, I just never found a story that I felt I wanted to tell. Until now, that is. I am happy to say that I signed a contract for A South Texas Holiday (could change the title) with JMS Books. The release date should be sometime in December. I’ll have more information as soon as we get closer to the release date.
Current WIP
Lately I’ve been in sort of a paranormal kick. First was Under Five, which is available now via most outlets. But while Under Five is more on the comedic side, I wanted to do something that was a tad spookier. I’ve always loved a good ghost story, and some of the best ones that I know are from the ones my relatives would tell me. So that’s what I decided to write: a ghost story based on the tales I heard as a kid, but with an LGBTQ twist. My goal, as always, is 40,000 words, but I’ll honestly be happy with 30,000 to 35,000. Right now I’m around 25,000, so almost there!
Well, that’s it for now. Any big news you are excited about? Let me know in the comments below.

Blurb and Excerpt for Pharaoh’s Kiss (Timeless Book #2)
Blurb:
Daniel’s world has been shaken to its core. His ex-boyfriend Marcus, whom he still loves, has returned from an unbelievable trip through a time traveling cave and brought along a hot new caveman lover, Jade. But that isn’t all. After realizing his mother disappeared through the same cave years earlier, Daniel learns he and Jade are connected in ways he couldn’t have imagined.
Tired of hearing about the wild time Jade and Marcus had together in the past, Daniel decides to venture into the cave himself. But instead of ending up in the prehistoric times, Daniel finds himself in ancient Egypt.
There Daniel catches the eye of the young, hot pharaoh. But with great pleasure also comes great danger. Can Daniel protect the pharaoh, or will he die in the past?
Excerpt:
Note: may contain sexually explicit scenes of a homoerotic nature.
There he was, chained between two columns, stripped of almost all clothing, and unsure of what was going to happen next. The thought of landing in ancient Egypt is something that would normally provide some thrills if this were a movie, but this was a little over the top. His scientific mind wanted to try and reason with the scantily-clad (and extremely well-built) guard, but he figured he wasn’t in any position to argue. His only hope was to convince the pharaoh to let him go, but even that was a long shot. He had already interrupted what looked like quite an elaborate ceremony after emerging from the cave, and was declared some sort of sorcerer before he even had a chance to explain.
With sweat streaming down from his head, Daniel began to build a thirst that he had never before felt in his life. The funny thing is Daniel had always wondered what bondage would be like. Heck, even in the right conditions, he probably would have gone through with it.
A small smile grew across Daniel’s face at the thought of him all dressed up in leather, bound in some basement, but it quickly faded as the guard approached with some water. Slowly, this hulking mass of muscle with sensational dark skin looked Daniel over with quiet awe as he drank. Yes, this beautiful wonder was a threat to the pharaoh, he thought, especially with the way he just appeared out of thin air. But somehow that very power held a different kind of attraction.
Standing well over six feet (at Daniel’s approximation, since he was six feet even), the guard towered above him, yet was close enough for Daniel to take in his intoxicating musk. Just a few inches closer and he could nibble on his neck or those wonderful pecs.
Snap out of it, Daniel declared in his mind, placing him firmly back into reality. “You need to keep your wits about you and try to get out of this.”
“Please,” Daniel began, “I am no threat to …” He was cut off midsentence by the guard, who placed a rather large finger across his lips. There was something odd about the way the finger graced his face. Daniel expected brute force, but instead, felt an unexpected gentleness.
“You have not been given permission to speak … yet,” the guard commanded, however with a slightly flirtatious tone. “Although, we do need to discover why you have come to Pharaoh’s kingdom.”
Daniel kept quiet, but only because he was eager to see where this was going.
The guard removed his finger from Daniel’s lips and began to slowly trace it down to his nicely toned chest, circling the nipple before giving it a gentle squeeze. Daniel wanted to moan, but as the guard had said, he had not been given permission to do any kind of talking, which he figured included sensual sounds.
For the first time, the guard smiled. “Talking is forbidden, but sounds of pleasure are allowed.” Daniel complied, releasing a gentle moan as the guard squeezed his nipple once more.
Pharaoh’s Kiss (Timeless Book #2) is available for pre-order via JMS Books, Amazon, Barnes and Noble, and other outlets.
