My novel “A Company of Tatters” started life back in...





My novel “A Company of Tatters” started life back in 1996 (about six years after high school graduation) as a play called “Three Dances.” I got diverted along the way by writing the three “Toyland Tales” novels instead, plus “How to Vanish in America” (that was largely scrapped). By the time I got back to the play I’d realized I can’t write plays. Also, most of the characters had swapped names or been renamed. Honestly, I think “A Company of Tatters” came out much better with the “forestory...

I cleaned and organized my writing room (in the garage) this weekend and uncovered the ancient origins of my current novels. Yup, I typically took my first stab at a new story the old fashioned way back then: by hand. Then I’d type up what I had on my typewriter if it got going, and keep at it. Now I just use a word processor.
