X-class Flare
On 24 February the Sun unleashed a strong X-class flare. Classified as an X4.9, it was the strongest flare emitted by the Sun in the last two years. NASA’s ever-vigilant Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) captured the event on the left limb of the Sun at 7:49 PM EST (00:49 GMT on 25 Feb), and the Goddard Scientific Visualization Studio released this image showing the flare across several wavelengths. By observing the Sun’s activity in different wavelengths, solar astronomers are able to study what is happening in different components of the Sun’s surface and atmosphere, as well as at different temperatures.
NASA also made a short video of the event that you can see here.
There was a coronal mass ejection associated with this flare, which could deliver a glancing blow to the geomagnetic field surrounding Earth, although any impacts will be minimal.
