Kat Martin’s New Romantic Suspense, Beyond Danger Excerpt

Beyond Danger

[image error](The Texas Trilogy)

by Kat Martin

New York Times bestselling author Kat Martin brings page-turning suspense to a tale of secrets and passions turned deadly  . . .

Texas mogul Beau Reese is furious. All six feet three obscenely wealthy, good-looking inches of him. His sixty-year-old father, Stewart, a former state senator no less, has impregnated a teenager. Barely able to contain his anger, Beau is in for another surprise. It appears that Stewart has moved an entirely different woman into the house . . .

Beau assumes that stunning Cassidy Jones is his father’s mistress. At least she’s of age. But those concerns take a sudden backseat when he finds Stewart in a pool of blood on the floor of his study—and Cassidy walks in to find Beau with his hand on the murder weapon.

The shocks just keep coming. Someone was following Stewart, and Cassidy is the detective hired to find out who and why. Now she’ll have to find his killer instead. Her gut tells her it wasn’t Beau. And Beau’s instincts tell him it wasn’t Cassidy. Determined to track down the truth, they form an uneasy alliance—one that will bring them closer to each other—closer to danger and beyond . . .

Beyond Danger Excerpt

Beau could hardly believe it. His father was sixty years old! The girl sitting across from him in a booth at the Pleasant Hill Café looked like a teenager. A very pregnant teenager.

“Everything’s going to be okay, Missy,” Beau Reese said. “You don’t have to worry about anything from now on. I’ll make sure everything is taken care of from here on out.”

“He bought me presents,” the girl said, dabbing a Kleenex against the tears in her eyes. “He told me how pretty I was, how much he liked being with me. I thought he loved me.”

Fat chance of that, Beau thought. His dad had never loved anyone but himself.

Shoving a hand through his wavy black hair, Beau took a steadying breath. He had always wanted a baby brother or sister. Now at the age of thirty five, he was finally going to have one.

Beau felt a surge of protectiveness toward the young woman carrying his father’s child.

He looked over to where she sat hunched over next to her mother on the opposite side of the pink vinyl booth. “Everybody makes mistakes, Missy. You picked the wrong guy, that’s all. Doesn’t mean you won’t have a great kid.”

For the first time since his arrival, Missy managed a tentative smile. “Thank you for saying that.”

Beau returned the smile. “I’m going to have a baby sister. I promise she won’t have to worry about a thing from the day she’s born into this world.” Hell, he was worth more than half a billion dollars. He would see the child had everything she ever wanted.

When Missy’s lips trembled, her mother scooted out of the booth. “I think she’s had enough for today. This is all very hard on her and I don’t want her getting overly tired.” Josie reached for her daughter’s hand. “Let’s go home, honey. You’ll feel better after a nap.”

Beau got up, too, leaned over and brushed a kiss on Missy’s cheek. “You both have my number. If you need anything, call me. Okay?”

Missy swallowed. “Okay.”

“I should have called you sooner.” Josie’s eyes teared up. “I didn’t know how I was going to manage the bills all by myself. “Thank you, Beau.”

“Everything’s going to be okay.” He watched the women head for the door, the bell ringing as Josie shoved it open and she and Missy walked out of the café.

Leaving money on the table for his coffee, he followed the women out the door, his temper climbing toward the boiling point. His father should be the one handling Missy’s pregnancy. He’d had months to step up and do the right thing. Beau figured he never would.

As he crossed the sidewalk and opened the door of his dark blue Ferrari, his temper cranked up another notch. By the time the car was roaring along the road to his father’s house, his fury was bubbling just below the surface.

Unconsciously his foot pressed harder on the gas, urging the car down the two-lane road at well over eighty miles an hour. With too many tickets in Howler County already, he forced himself to slow down.

Making the turn into Country Club Estates, he jammed on the brakes and the car slid to a stop in front of the house. The white, two-story home he’d been raised in oozed Southern charm, the row of columns out front mimicking an old-style plantation.

Climbing out of the Ferrari, one of his favorite vehicles, he pounded up the front steps and crossed the porch. The housekeeper had Mondays and Tuesdays off so he used his key to let himself into the entry.

On this chilly, end-of-January day, the ceiling fans hadn’t been turned on, leaving the interior strangely silent. The ticking of the ornate grandfather clock in the living room seemed louder than it usually did.

“Dad! It’s Beau! Where are you?” When he didn’t get an answer, he strode down the hall toward the study. He had phoned his father on his way here from Dallas. Though he’d done his best to keep the anger out of his voice, he wasn’t sure he had succeeded. Maybe his father had left to avoid him.

“Dad!” Still no answer. Beau continued down the hall, his footsteps echoing in the quiet. As he reached the study, he noticed the door standing slightly ajar. Steeling himself for the confrontation ahead, he clamped down on his temper and shoved open the door.

His father wasn’t sitting at the big rosewood desk or in his favorite overstuffed chair next to the fireplace. Beau started to turn away when an odd gurgling sound sent the hairs up on the back of his neck.

“Dad!” At the opposite end of the desk, Beau spotted a prone figure lying on the floor in a spreading pool of blood. “Dad!” The handle of a letter opener protruded from the middle of his chest.

Beau raced to his father’s side. “Dad!” Blood oozed from the wound in his chest and streamed onto the hardwood floor. He had to stop the bleeding and he had to do it now!

He hesitated, praying he wouldn’t make it worse, then with no other option, grabbed the handle of the letter opener, jerked it out, gripped the front of his dad’s white shirt and ripped it open.

“Oh, my God! What are you–”

Beau glanced up to see the woman, Cassidy Jones, standing in the doorway. “Call 9-1-1! Hurry, he’s been stabbed! Hurry!”

The shapely brunette, his father’s newly hired personal assistant, didn’t pause, just pulled out her cell and dialed the emergency number.

Beau’s hand shook as he checked for a pulse, found none. The wound was catastrophic, a stab wound straight to the heart. No way could his father survive it.

Cassidy ran over and knelt on the floor beside him. “Here, use this to seal the hole.” She seemed amazingly in control as she handed him a credit card then ran to the wet bar and grabbed a towel, rushed back and handed it over.

Beau pressed the towel over the credit card on top of the hole, all the while knowing his father was already dead or within moments of dying. Whoever had stabbed him knew exactly where to bury the blade.

Cassidy reached down to check for herself, pressing her fingers in exactly the right spot on the side of his father’s neck. She had to know it was hopeless, just as he did, must have known Stewart Reese was dead.

“I’m sorry,” she said.

Sorrow slid through him, making his chest clamp down. Or maybe it was sadness for the kind of man his father was, the kind who had wound up the victim of a killer.

He felt Cassidy’s eyes on him, assessing him with speculation–or was it suspicion?

Beau looked down at his father, his eyes closed, his face slack in death. Stuart Reese was dead and Beau wanted answers. He vowed whatever it took, for as long as it took, he wouldn’t stop until he found the man who had murdered his dad.

Kat Martin

“Martin takes readers on a well-plotted roller-coaster ride with her sexy and suspenseful second Texas Trilogy contemporary romantic thriller (after Beyond Reason). Former race car driver Beau Reese is estranged from his father, Stewart, a former state senator, and is furious to learn that Stewart has seduced and impregnated a 19-year-old. When Beau confronts his unrepentant father, he encounters gorgeous Cassidy Jones and thinks she’s another of his father’s mistresses. But later, when Cassidy finds Beau standing over his father’s body, murder weapon in hand, he learns that she’s a PI and his father hired her because he felt threatened. It soon becomes apparent that someone won’t hesitate to kill them both before they find Stewart’s real murderer. Surprises and red herrings lie around every corner, keeping readers off-balance until the author brings the story to a shocking finish. Martin excels in creating multidimensional, appealing rogues and the strong, sexy women who fall for them, and this novel is no exception. An excellent cast of supporting characters provides a well-drawn backdrop as Martin skillfully sets up the last book in the trilogy. This nail-biter of a romantic thriller will delight new readers and returning fans.” – Publishers Weekly

The Joy of Writing a Romance

Deep breath. The holidays are over. My last book is launched. My new book is being considered. Time to begin a new WIP and rediscover the joy of writing a romance. Already, I’m over 11,000 words into the first draft.

Hero: Jarrett Barclay
[image error]

Creative Commons License, Bob Wick, BLM

I’m steadily falling in love with Jarrett. (Don’t tell my DH.) He’s the wounded man I love to write about and redeem with a woman’s love. Jarrett’s had the weight of his family and their Montana ranch on his shoulders from too young an age. His siblings are finding their own lives. Isn’t it about time for him to find his? Winning a rodeo horse might be the answer to his prayers.

No matter what his trials, Jarrett is still a steady, strong man who has values that include tending his family, conserving the family land for future generations, and doing the right thing when he can. He truly brings out the joy in writing a romance.

Heroine: Samantha
[image error]

Creative Commons License, Blue by Nick Perrone

Like Jarrett, Samantha is a salt of the earth type of woman. She’s smart and organized, as well as an excellent money manager. She likes girly things and creates a warm home no matter where she goes. Her Achilles heel is Jarrett Barclay, a man who only sees her as his kid-sister’s best friend, while she lost her heart to him a decade ago. She’d like to move to another city, see if she can find someone else with whom to build a life. When her family needs her though, they come first.

She’s got a strong, quiet heart, the kind of friend you turn to when things have hit rock bottom. You know she’ll always be there with a cup of tea and a listening ear.

The Story

Challenge on Choteau Mountain is the tale of two real human beings following their hearts to their happy ending by making the changes they must while staying true to their ideals.

It is great joy to write their story!

Beyond Danger … where secrets and passions turn deadly

Coming the end of January, Beyond Danger is the second book in my Texas trilogy, following

Kat Martin

Beyond Reason. In the first novel, Lincoln Cain is a Texas multimillionaire with a shady past. After two years in prison, Linc is as tough as they come, six foot five, two hundred pounds of solid male muscle. While I was writing it, I fell a little in love with Linc’s business partner, Beau Reese.

Beyond Danger is Beau’s story. Mega-rich, black-haired, and blue-eyed, Beau is gorgeous to look at, and flashy. He was an amateur race car driver before he left the racing circuit, sort of a Texas Paul Newman. Beau loves fast cars and fast women.

He is also wanted for murder.

That’s where private investigator, Cassidy Jones, comes in. She’s smart and she’s no pushover, exactly the woman for Beau. Best of all, she’s determined to prove his innocence.

Texas has always been one of my favorite places. The people who live there embody the best of America. The men are rugged and the woman who match them are strong. It seemed like the perfect setting for my latest trilogy.

The third book in the series is Beyond Control. Linc’s brother, Joshua Cain, is a former marine special operations sniper turned Texas rancher. Josh just wants his life back, wants time to figure things out after his years in the military. He’s enjoying the peace and quiet of the rural Texas landscape–until pretty, fiery haired Victoria Bradford shows up with her four-year-old daughter. Then all hell breaks loose.

Tory is being followed by a stalker. Damien Bridger means to have her, and no one, not even tough as nails Josh Cain, is going to stand in his way.

I hope you’ll watch for Beyond Danger, followed by Beyond Control, out in June. If you haven’t read Beyond Reason, I hope you’ll watch for it, too.

Also, in the last month, two of my books, Season of Strangers and Scent of Roses, have been re-issued with new covers. Season of Strangers is one of my paranormal romantic suspense novels, a wild story, by far the most unusual book I’ve ever written. And Scent of Roses is a ghost story with a sexy bad-boy hero.

Happy New Year! All best and happy reading, Kat

The Spirit of You — Meditation on Relationships

[image error][image error]When I was in college, I read Martin Buber’s I and Thou. Although I can’t say that I totally remember it, I was moved enough by what I read that it stayed in my consciousness for the rest of my life. There are so many unsaid things in that simple phrase: I and Thou.

Currently, I am re-reading The Lord Is My Shepherd: Healing Wisdom of the Twenty-third Psalm. In the book, Rabbi Harold Kushner brings up Buber’s book and brings clarity to the main theme. People relate to each other, he says, either by a concept of “I and It” or “I and Thou.”

If motivated by “I and It,” the “I” considers the other person an object–someone to be acted upon, or a person who is a reflection of our worth–a trophy wife, for example, or dating the star quarterback in high school not because you like him, but because of his position on the team.

“I and Thou,” by contrast. considers the other person a subject of curiosity. What is he or she feeling? What do they want? How can we relate to each other? If the other person is sad, can I feel that sadness, feel empathy, for that person? Kushner goes on to say that this is how God relates to humans. We are not to be manipulated for His pleasure. When we feel sorrow, so does He.

The Connection to Romance

What does this have to do with romance?

“I and It” could never be the subject of a good romance. It’s a manipulative relationship, the kind that rarely leads to happily ever after. It’s a concept we tend to associate with villains. Sometimes heroes and heroines may start out in an “I and It” relationship, but the happily ever after is never achieved until the relationship shifts to “I and Thou.”

Each person has to see the person for whom he or she really is and to empathize with their feelings. Of course, the happily ever after is only the beginning of a lifetime of study–each of us of ourselves as well as the other person and the dynamics of the relationship itself.

That hope for the future is why I read romance. Perhaps you do to. It is a wonderful antidote to a world where “I and It” relationships seem to abound.

I and Thou

[image error][image error]I have to admit, I am a very curious person. I really do want to know how another person ticks, what moves them, and how they arrive at the conclusion they do. I’m very open to discussion two of the three things you’re never supposed to discuss in polite society: religion and politics. (As long as the conversation remains civil, that is.)

In my life, I try, not always successfully, to retain that “I and Thou” mentality, from teaching school, to dealing with clerks in this very busy season.

My hope is you will consider this stance as well.

Have a very happy holiday season. Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukah, Kwanzaa greetings–whatever your belief. We have only a week more of growing darkness before the light begins again.

Hallelujah!

[image error]Today is release day for Second Chance Christmas. As is appropriate after Thanksgiving, I am thankful for many people who have collaborated in the creation and publicity for this book.

My amazing assistant, Kira S. A great addition to my team!

My students at the local school who inspire, challenge, and give me hope for the future.

You, my readers. You praise me when I do well, critique me when I’ve slipped up, and inspire me to work daily at my craft.

As always … my DH

Getting in the Mood for Christmas Romance

[image error]The Hallmark channels launched their Christmas season a few weeks ago. I know — it’s a little early for me, too.

But here in Montana, the early snow is edging us a little closer to the season. We have about an inch, but the bushes and trees across the river are coated in ice, making it a very lovely scene. The deer who walk around the yard almost daily are easier to spot. They are such wonderfully gangly creatures.

My third full-length Christmas story is up on all the major retailers for pre-order. For links to all my Christmas romances, click here.

If you are a member of NetGalley or Edelweiss, the book is also ready for you to grab and write a review. I hope you enjoy Findlay and Reese’s story!

My Christmas gift to you is a free copy of Love on the Wind. Click the link above this post. (If you have any problems, make sure that your browser settings allow popups from this site. Still having problems? Contact me at casey@stories-about-love.com.)

Enjoy the lead-up to the holidays. My readers make me grateful daily!

Cover Reveal: Second Chance Christmas Romance

[image error]Second Chance Christmas, my latest Christmas romance set in my town of Missoula, Montana, hits the shelves on November 27, 2017!

This book has a new twist. I’ve upped the intrigue. Not only do Reese and Findlay need to find their way to each other, but they need to figure out who is framing her. I’ve dug into my tech background and enlisted my friend, Dave, to provide realistic Java code for the book.

[image error]The story also draws on elements unique to Montana and Missoula. The football rivalry between the University of Montana (Missoula) Grizzlies and the Montana State University (Bozeman) Bobcats reaches a fever pitch during the annual “Brawl of the Wild.” Interstate 90 connects the two cities and when Findlay laments about the trophy going down the highway, she’s speaking literally.

I was talking with a writing coaching client the other day. She lives in the San Francisco Bay Area and was having problems understanding the space and culture of Montana. It was only when I pointed out that its the fourth largest state, but only hit a population of one million people a few years ago that she got it. In fact, I recently read a statistic that there are three cows for every person in the state.

Enjoy a little bit of Montana culture from the comfort of your easy chair. Second Chance Christmas comes out November 27, 2017.

HINT: If you want to know when the review copy will show up on NetGalley and Edelweis, click the link at the top of the page to sign up for my mailing list. You will also get a free Christmas romance that’s perfect for the upcoming holiday season!

Fall Romance: Apples, Golden Leaves, and Love

[image error]Several years ago DH and I went on a fall trip that had been recommended by Sunset Magazine. The trek took us down the “Loneliest Highway in America” (Nevada’s Route 50), to Great Basin National Park and to the small town of Boulder, Utah.

It was peak color for the aspens in Great Basin. We spent hours oohing and ahhing over the trees–must have shot hundreds of photos. It was one of those serendipitous perfect days–and a time to be perfectly in love, no matter how long we’d been together.

The contrast of the golden leaves with the red rocks of Utah exploded our palate of color. It was vibrant, and ultimately inspired me to create one of my first (and so far only) art quilts. The lodge was beautiful and Hells Backbone Grill an amazing place to eat with a great story. Their Cowgirl Meatloaf is a wintertime staple in our house.

[image error]Travel like this provides renewal for existing relationships and chances for new relationships to bloom. A change of scenery can expand your horizons and is a staple of romance novels and the Hallmark channel. Before the seasonal crazies descend, take some time to savor fall’s tease to your senses–the color of leaves, the tart sweetness of apple pie, and the rustle of the leaves and children’s sounds of joy as they discover the happiness of leaping into a pile of leaves.

Grab someone you love and join them!

Country Music Romance

I never thought I’d be a fan of country music, or of the mushy country music romance embedded in its lyrics. Although I watched Gene Autry and Roy Rogers as a kid and loved the music, the twangy sound of most country music was something I simply couldn’t get past. I sensed there was something I was missing, but it took me a long time to find it.

I’m grateful country music has evolved beyond the twang. I love the lyrics, and the stories they tell of really human beings. I may not always like the messenger (I’m really conflicted about my enjoyment of Toby Keith’s music and his politics), but I do like the songs and lustfully sing along.

Jared Rogerson

Many writers develop play lists while they write their stories. Is the process for developing a song much different from a book? All the elements are woven together — words, story, mood. They are intertwined.

The idea was brought out beautifully by a program brought together by Kari Lynn Dell, a wonderful romance writer, rancher, and rodeo rider from Montana.  She invited Jared Rogerson to sing and play for us as we discussed the parallels between writing a romance and a song. If you get a chance to see this young man perform in Wyoming or Montana, take the opportunity to experience a little taste of the west.

What country music songs are your favorites and why?
