Tamela Quijas's Blog, page 5

February 28, 2012

and now, stay tuned…….

My end of the world is a little more relaxed after today!  My final installment of The Blood Chronicles, Tears of Blood, is off to the publisher as of this morning, so all I have to do is wait to hear from them.  Spring break is just about here for the college students, so I'm looking at a week of peace from psych homework (UGH!) and I can focus on forming The Blood Chronicles into one book that I'll release in the summer.  So far, two items on this years' to-do list are almost complete.

While I have a chance, for those of you that have been following my blog, you know that Tears of Blood involves a silent film actor turned modern-day vamp.  On researching my character and the background of Old Hollywood, I've become addicted to bits of history that are often taken for granted.

Among those is television—an item that is part of our life more profoundly than one could ever realize.

Growing up, I was fascinated by that tiny screen–my luxury was a 12-inch black and white with one channel in English.  BTW, yes, it did not have anything resembling a remote control, and you had to get up to change the channel.

I was  a big fan of Pappy Boyington and his Black Sheep Squadron, Wild Wild West, Star Trek, Hawaii 5-0, The Avengers,  and Night Gallery.  It was an eclectic lineup for a child, but I'd watch anything my parents were watching.

However, one show was my favorite.  It didn't have cool special effects, handsome stars, or creepy nightmares involved.  It was a simple show with a rowdy bunch of actors that put themselves into situations of a war unknown to young minds.

M*A*S*H was that taboo show that I would watch without my parents approval, giggling along with Hawkeye and wondering what else what up with really not-so-crazy Klinger.  Even as a teen, I was a dedicated fan, and my weekly lineup included my favorite view of the Korean War.

February 28, 1983, the viewing world watched the last episode of M*A*S*H.  Over 77 percent of the viewing audience watched the two-and-a-half hour episode that ended 11 seasons of a war that lasted longer than the actual Korean War.

What's on my reading list this week? Connections of the Mind by Roseanne Dowell

I've a novel on my reading list this week that involves dream invasions of a sort, where the main characters dreams are shared with someone else, and the pain felt within them is very, very real!  Connections of the Mind promises to be something that might keep me awake at night!

Connections of the MindConnections of the Mind is written by Roseanne Dowell.  Ms. Dowell warmly allowed her readers a bit of insight into her life via Goodreads:

As the second youngest of six children, I always had a vivid imagination and loved to make up stories. I often sat and daydreamed about imaginary characters and lost myself in books and make-believe worlds. My love of writing began as a teenager, but it wasn't until recent years that I pursued it seriously. With encouragement from fellow book-club members, NEORWA and my husband, I began writing and submitting my work. Although Satin Sheets was my first published novel, I have over forty articles and stories published in magazines such as Good Old Days, Nostalgia, and Ohio Writer along with several online publications. Besides teaching three writing courses for Long Story School of Writing, I taught a writing course at Cuyahoga Community College. My next book, Time to Live Again will be out March 11, 2010 with Red Rose Publishing. In my spare time, I enjoys spending time with my six children and thirteen grandchildren. My hobbies include ceramics, knitting, quilting, and jewelry making. But after my family, my first love is writing. I live with my husband of forty-seven years in Northeast Ohio. Book Review: Iniquities by April Alisa Marquette

The Cohort Trilogy has come to a close this week, and I can't wait to tell you about the final novel in the series…Iniquities by April Alisa Marquette.

This beautiful author, who writes believable romances filled with the problems that we face in the world,  loves to tell her readers that she loves a good cup of coffee.

April Alisa Marquette, a native New Yorker was delighted with the Literature and Creative Writing electives offered in college. Once a tutor for middle school and high school students, she shared with them her love for reading as well as writing. She is committed to creating detailed sagas that depict smart, sexy, savvy multi-cultural women.

She also writes non-fiction. She is the co-author of a series of inspirational books with a renowned New York evangelist. Relinquish and Reap is the name of the series. Autobiographical, seven purse-sized books are slated to tell the seventy-something Jessica Janna's story. One for each decade of Jessica's life, you will feel the love, as the authors offer tidbits on how to live peaceably amid life's turbulence.

April also writes a weekly column online, discussing Ethnic Beauty. In her column she offers beauty advice, tips, and tricks. At the Ethnic Beauty site at BellaOnline.com there is also an interactive, visitor-friendly forum where discussions take place. It April's endeavor to empower, as well as offer value to women of varying ethnicities.

MY REVIEW:

Of all the characters that glorious fill the pages of April Alisa Marquette's Cohort Trilogy, Beau DeVeaux has always been my favorite.  Granted, he's the only male amongst a bevy of women, but he has something to him that makes his very friendship and presence so valuable and endearing that I could help love him from the start.

Beau is one of those believable human beings that has suffered through the trials and tribulations of a life that started out terribly from the onset.  Unloved by his drug addicted mother, molested by a member of society that people trust with their children, Beau is on a downward spiral of loneliness and an inward pain that rips at his soul.

When Beau's world is surrounded by the stigma of foster homes, an aunt searches for him and brings him into a world that is filled with an emotion he's never experienced…unconditional love.

Ms. Marquette's Iniquities is a beautiful journey into Beau's life.  I adored how he reflected back on moments in his life, and the situations that molded and changed him.  He's the dearest of friends that holds the people in his life close to his heart and, as each of those people leave, they take a piece of his precious heart with them, but they are never forgotten.

Above all, he just has so much love to give…

Moving and pulling at the heartstrings, just as the other novels in this trilogy did, the reader journeys through Beau's life from a front seat.  As a fan of Ms. Marquette and Beau, I found Iniquities to be a stunning novel that truly spotlights Ms. Marquette's skill, and filled with a superb Happy Ending for the most magical of the Cohorts.

5 stars.

A bit of a birthday bash brushed with a touch of Hollywood History

English: Drew Barrymore at the premiere for He...

Image via Wikipedia

For any of you that watch the old films and enjoy timeless classics that never age, you'll recall this young lady and her very talented family.  She's more beautiful than she was a decade ago, admits her faults without trying to hide them, and is an all around sweetheart in the films she's in.  I am not a big fan of chick flicks, but if this young lady is in the film, I'll drop everything and watch!

I first watched her in a film that swept the movies in 1980, where she played the obnoxious little sister that had one hell of a set of lungs and could scream loud enough to make an alien wince.  She went through her rocky stage as a teen, then emerged from her problems and continued with acting.  She's a star in one of my favorite films, Ever After, where she gave a delightful twist on the entire Cinderella story.  That isn't the only one though on my Barrymore hit list, though.  I loved her in The Wedding Singer, Boys on the Side, Never Been Kissed, Fever Pitch, and Music and Lyrics.  She exudes a sweetness that makes me smile, just as she did when she was that cute little darling in her first blockbuster film.

The exciting bit of history that I'm throwing in, she comes from a stellar family of actors, which include her grandfather John Barrymore , great-uncle Lionel Barrymore,  and godfather Steven Spielberg.

To add to the bit of Hollywood royalty and history, she's the great-granddaughter of actors Maurice Barrymore (1849-1905) and Georgiana Drew (1856-1893).  Her great-uncle, Lionel (1878-1954), played the horrible Mr. Potter from the Christmas Classic "It's a Wonderful Life."  Her grandfather, John (1882-1942) was a noted Shakespearean actor, and his sister Ethel (1879-1959) was a celebrated actress.

On Feb. 22, 1975, the beautiful and extremely talented, Drew Barrymore, who debuted in a starring role in "ET: The Extra-Terrestrial" was born.

MY REVIEW:

Men in Uniform….

Do you remember that point in your life when a man in uniform turned your head?  A man in uniform has always made a woman smile, from cheeky little grins filled with absolute admiration to…well, all you have to do is watch From Here to Eternity to understand what I mean.

I'd have to say my first attraction to a man in uniform was Officer Francis ("Frank") "Ponch" Poncherello of CHIPS back in the late 1970s.  Just watching him leave the police station and get on is bike made me want to move to California!

Uniform Behaviour delivers that same feeling of absolute adoration for the people who wear their work clothes with pride and dedication.

Because of the cover, I was expecting an anthology centered on men in the military, but Uniform Behaviour was far different!

Uniform Behaviour was a delightful series of 16 short and VERY scorching stories that centered on men and women serving the public, from waiters, priests, cooks, security guard, and even the seriously dedicated Queen's guard.

The 16 stories that form this wonderful erotica novel run from blazing hot reads that will make the blush, to delightfully sizzling tales that will curl your toes.

A delicious read that will make you burn the candles late at night—worthy of 5 raging stars.

Jocelyn Michel stops by to discuss Forbidden Love and her Assassins in Lace Erotica Series

Recently, I had the pleasure of having author Jocelyn Michel drop in to discuss Forbidden Love.  In the spirit of St. Valentine's week, I'm sharing my visit with you, and hope  you find the time to check out Jocelyn's website and exciting series.

When I look at my shelves at the books I keep forever and the DVDs I actually buy, I realize that one particular theme runs throughout: forbidden love.  We read it in new books.  Think Twilight (teen human/109 year old vamp), Harry Potter (wizard/best friend's sister), and the Sookie Stackhouse stories (human/vamp, human/shapeshifter).  We read it in old books, too.  Think Jane Eyre (governess/employer) and Gone With the Wind (southern belle/rogue).  As for movies, oh my.  The list is really long, with some of my personal favorites being The Order (priest/psychotic woman who adores him), The Jacket (beleaguered war vet/young woman from the future), and Underworld (sexy vamp/hunky hybrid vamp-were).

I guess that's why I tackled the theme in my Assassins in Lace erotica series, currently in release by Changeling Press. Since vampires and werewolves are natural enemies, the thought of them defying tradition and the odds to hook up really intrigued me.   I'd actually gotten a taste of this type of romance when I wrote Charisma, a short read for the All Romance Ebooks Just One Bite contest.  It was so much fun, I decided to write some others in the same vein.  The result? Short, sexy reads with a hint of humor.

Assassins in Lace 1: Impressions

Vampire Chantel Mathis, aka Karma, is an assassin who always gets her werewolf. Tonight she's posing as an interior decorator applying for a position at Aubrey Enterprises. Her interviewer and mark is Ren Aubrey, the delectable CEO and owner. Though Ren plays the role of savvy businessman to perfection, Karma knows there's more there than meets the eye. This werewolf is really an assassin so deadly that the vamps have nicknamed him Slayer.

What Karma doesn't know is that Ren is exactly her type. Worse, he's onto her. So the moment he steps into the room, she struggles not only to keep her wits about her, but to keep her distance. It doesn't help that Ren is every bit as beguiled and perfectly willing for their business relationship to be much more. Will Karma be able to resist Slayer's many charms? Or will their night of passion turn deadly?Assassins in Lace 2: Scents

In the second book, Scents, Vampire Sasha runs a fragrance industry by day and stalks Weres by night.  Tripp Stefano, a werewolf notorious for how many vampires he's killed, has been particularly hard to snuff.  What Sasha doesn't know is that sexy Tripp actually works as a handyman in her company's maintenance department under the name Trey.  And the first step to taking her down is sabotaging every gizmo she owns so she'll open up her penthouse office suite to him.

            Assassins in Lace 3: Blackout

Blackout  is about deadly enemies, vampire Mali and werewolf Dante, who are stuck together in a bank vault during a city-wide power outage.  Since the Mali is an assassin with a lot of wolf notches on her designer belt, she should make the most of happenstance to take down her unwitting companion.  Unfortunately, Dante is not only just her type, but just as attracted, so things don't work out exactly as they should for either of them.

Book 4, Inferno, is available exclusively at  http://changelingpress.com/product.php?&upt=book&ubid=1653

Vamp assassin Bianca almost gets her wolf, Raffe, late one night, but he escapes even though he's wounded.  The next day she is awakened by fire alarms warningthat her high-rise apartment building is in flames.  A handsome fireman–the wolf who got away–rescues her just in time.  Grateful, but unable and unwilling to live and let live, she decides to give him a night of pleasure before she does him in.  Big mistake.

Check out my website at www.eroswithfangs.com for information about my other erotica.  And for some great erotica reads, check out my publishers: www.changelingpress.com, www.sugarnspicepress.com, www.ravenousromance.com, and www.the-wild-horse-press.com.

Even better for interested readers out there—you can read exclusive excerpts of all 4 books at http://changelingpress.com/author.php?uid=149

Movie Review: The Woman in Black

My Valentine Treat this year was my fav–dinner and a movie.  Of course, I had to go see the much-touted The Woman in Black with Daniel Radcliffe.

I'll be honest with you–I was thinking Harry Potter from the moment I stepped into the theater.  You have to understand how it is, especially when a person has played a character for such a long time, and then they burst onto the screen with something so entirely different.  Honestly, most viewers are thrown into shock.  (I feel that way when I see Robin Williams play a psychotic killer!)  I wasn't looking forward to the film, but the clips from TV kept drawing me in, despite my overall fear that the cutesy Potter was going to ruin the show

Playing Arthur Kipps, Radcliffe portrays a lawyer who is grieving for his wife, who died when their son was born.  The boy, now 4, doesn't have any memories of his father being happy.  Every picture he draws, his father is sad, broken-hearted, and Mum is the bright angel in heaven.

Kipps' depression is affecting every aspect of his life, and he's to the point that his employers are finding him difficult to keep on.  Desperate to save his job, Kipps has to sort out the cluttered affairs of a reclusive old woman living on a stretch of remote land.  The town's folk don't want him around, and make it clear from the moment he steps into the local bar.  Children, their faces pale and filled with fear, are kept behind lock and key.  Dread and pain shadow the eyes of every parent in town, and Kipps is determined to find out why.

Daniel Radcliffe blew my mind!

The boy (now quite a handsome young man) can act, and he plays a tormented soul with such skill that my heart ached.  He has true talent behind those stellar blue eyes and has magically switched from the hero of his Hogwarts school chums and into a realm of adults.  Radcliffe leads the viewer into his grief, and his determination to discover if there really is a spiteful ghost claiming the lives of the town's children.

Overall, this movie was more poignant that frightening, but I loved the way Radcliffe amazed me with his skill.  The young man has true talent that has added him to my Stars to Watch list.

3  1/2 stars

St. Valentine's Day, Roman Style

Early 20th century Valentine's Day card, showi...

Image via Wikipedia

Today is St. Valentine's Day and the delicious aroma of chocolates and roses are beginning to fill the air. I'm already licking my lips, waiting for that much-anticipated remembrance of love my hubby will be passing my way. As he delivers his signature red rose and my favorite extremely dark chocolates, his sheepishly little boy smile will make my heart perform a wild little thud, just as it did the first time I saw him.

Yes, he still makes my heart do those crazy little jumps. He brings a smile to my face that warms me through the entire day. His sweet little notes, left around the house or doodled on notepads, can still make me giggle like a schoolgirl. There are moments that he can look at me and simply say 'hey there, beautiful' and I feel all mushy inside.

Valentine's Day arrives in a glorious burst of joy, reminding us that we must shout at the world, reveling in a feeling that begins deep with our heart. Love is glorious, delicious, sweet and wicked. It's that warm fuzzy feeling that sucks you in with both hands, making you forget your sanity and sense of reason. That's the entire essence of St. Valentine's Day. It's the one day set aside to celebrate love and being loved.

What other day can make us sit back and remember what it felt like the first time we looked at our lover? Did the earth stand still, for the one tiny little second, while you stared into your true love's eyes? Did you look across a crowded room and know, just with one glance, they were the one with whom you were meant to spend the rest of your life? Could it have been with a touch? Was there that single contact of the fingers that sent currents of electricity racing through your body and left you a breathless mass of flesh, longing for more? Or was it that first kiss you recall, where you became weak in the knees and the world tilted a bit off to the side?

Whatever the reason, each of those sensations is earth shattering in their own sense. They are moments that, no matter how old we become, we never forget. Valentine's Day is our reason to celebrate that joy, those tingling sensations, and those moments where we stared into someone eyes and just knew.

On a historical side note: Did you know in Ancient Rome, 13, 14 and 15 February was celebrated with a pagan fertility festival? The festival, known as Lupercalia, is the supposed grounds for the loving celebrations we have on this date. While reading the details, I sat back and thought 'Okay, great, the love-ins began in Rome. I could imagine handsome Roman men, in their cute little togas, wooing their lady-loves.'

Oh boy, I was so far off the truth!

According to a University of Colorado professor, young Roman men would strip naked and run the streets, using whips to spank the backsides of young women in order to improve their fertility.

Gentlemen, you have gotten it all wrong after all these years! You don't need the running of the bulls in Pamplona. The running of the Men in Rome sounds so much more deliciously wicked!

What's on my reading list this week? Uniform Behaviour!

Ok, this erotically sensual book promises to make my toes curl!  Last year, author Lucy Felthouse brought an interesting tale to my attention, and it was written by some of the steamiest writers I could ever imagine!  Finally, my TBR pile is started to get down to a manageable tower, and the cover of Uniform Behaviour caught my undivided attention.
