In 1952, V. I. Marchenko entered the Literary Institute named after V.I. A.M. Gorky. After graduation in 1958 - 1960 he worked there as the head of industrial practice. Later - Deputy Editor-in-Chief of the Sovremennik Publishing House, Deputy Chairman of the Auditing Commission of the Writers 'Union of the RSFSR and Chairman of the Revolutionary Commission of the Moscow Writers' Organization.
