A Magical Menagerie

Each year we try to bring as much holiday magic to our little Main Street as we can.
This year we were inspired by the the old folktale that all the farm animals in the manger were so awed by the site of the baby that they temporarily gained the ability to speak.
We think the world could use more magical moments, and that’s what we try to deliver in every single thing we do.

“ORGANIC: FARMERS AND CHEFS OF THE HUDSON VALLEY” SIGNED BOOK
Foodie gift alert! In this signed book, New York-educated and Hudson Valley-based photographer Francesco Mastalia captures the portraits and stories, in their own words, of more than 100 New York farmers and chefs for whom “organic” is a state of mind. Francesco employs the wet plate collodion photographic method, which dates back to the 1850s. It’s a race against time to gauge the perfect amalgamation of lighting, humidity and exposure; in contrast to the burst modes of today’s digital cameras, there are no second chances with this technique, nor is there any postproduction editing. The pictures Francesco shoots are the ones we see: portraits bathed in shadows and silver tones that inspire conversation about what it can mean to be simultaneously historic, modern, and timeless—a reflection of the human, organic experience. Life Lessons: Holiday Magic
Real life is difficult and challenging. Sometimes it might even seem unbearable. We find that the best way to deal with reality is to bring as much magic to it as possible, and that’s why humans have always relied on it. Suspending disbelief—even if momentarily—is a survival tactic.
Children love enchanting stories and fairy tales because their souls crave magic. Stories about an unseen magical world help them perceive more of the magic already around them every day.
As we grow older, life gets a rhythm of busy-ness that can sedate our magical senses. It’s really easy to become caught up in the mundane existence of emails, social media, and work and family obligations. The result is that many people walk around with high levels of stress that impact physical health and overwhelm the mind to the point that it becomes a challenge to tune into intuition, divine guidance, and spiritual connection.
After a rough-and-tumble year, the magic that we create at the holiday season is not only a reward for our collective endurance; it’s a necessity.
This year, when designing the Mercantile theme, we were inspired by the myth that at the stroke of midnight on Christmas Eve, animals gain the power of speech. The legend operates on the belief that Jesus’ birth occurred at exactly midnight. The animals in the manger were so awed by the presence of the holy child that they were temporarily able to speak in exaltation.
Every year at midnight, (at least the years that we’re awake,) we step out into the cold night air on the farm, walk the few paces to the barn, and listen carefully. So far we’ve never heard the goats talking, but we like to think they hear us coming and just hold it all in until the chill of winter gets the best of us and makes us return to the warmth of the hearth. (You can listen for yourself this year on the Live Goat Cam)
Even though we’ve yet to witness this miracle of the manger, we make it a practice to find a miracle on the farm each and every day. Sometimes it’s a blossom, sometimes it’s a snowflake, but the miracles are always, always there.
This holiday season—and then throughout the rest of the new year—look for miracles. Miracles both large and small are happening around you every single day. Don’t overlook or ignore them.
Want more magic in your life? Look for it! Recognize the magic, miracles, and blessings that surround you, and you can be sure that by doing so, they will multiply.

Happy Cy Berman Day

From all of us at Beekman 1802 to all of you: Happy Cy Berman Day! Wait. What? You haven’t heard of Cy Berman? Maybe you’ve been mishearing his name all these years. Some folks believe that the Monday following Thanksgiving is something called “Cyber Monday.” But that’s silly. What does a computer have to do with Christmas? That’s right: Nothing. But Cyril “Cy” Berman? Why, he practically invented the first day of the Christmas Season! And here’s his mostly-true-but-kinda-also-entirely-made-up story… (But if you just want to skip to the sale part, click here.)
Our guy “Cy” was born “Cyril Berman” in Sharon Springs, NY in 1912. After earning his accounting degree, he married and moved his family to New York City where he worked at Pinchon Bottham & Vamoose Accounting from 1935-1976. And from his very first day on the job he was assisted by a very capable secretary named Holly Daye.
Every year, on the Monday following the Thanksgiving holiday, Cy would come into work with a list of Christmas presents he needed to purchase for his wife and a crisp $100 bill. Handing them to Holly, he’d say: “Miss Daye, as long as you return from lunch with all of the items on the list, I don’t care if there’s any change left over.”
Well, Holly happened to know every single bargain in the city, so each year she saved herself quite a Christmas bonus. She saved so much money, in fact, that the other secretaries began giving her the money from their bosses to buy their wives’ presents. Holly could shop for all of the executives in the entire firm and be done by 1pm with hundreds of dollars left over.
Soon it became tradition for Holly to invite the other secretaries to lunch with the money she’d saved. As these ladies sat around the fanciest restaurants in New York, trying on the latest hats, jewelry and furs just purchased for their bosses’ wives, they would lift a toast to Cyril Berman…the man who started it all…and cheer: HAPPY CY BERMAN DAY!
So while you’re sitting at your desk this Monday morning thinking about how long and expensive your shopping list is, we invite you to check out the “Cy Berman Day” Special Deals we’ve pulled together just for you at Beekman 1802. We think Holly would be proud.

2017 Thanksgiving

Our Thanksgiving tradition has always been not to have a tradition. Some years we spend it with family, some years we spend it at friends’ houses, and some years we celebrate on the farm. We have that odd combination of working in agriculture and retail. Which means we’re busiest during the Spring planting season, Summer growing season, Fall harvest season, Holiday shopping season, and Winter birthing season. So, yep. Year round. (And we wouldn’t have it any other way.) But this year we were lucky and got to spend Thanksgiving right here on the farm. Home again, Home again, Jiggedy Jig!
One of the best things about living on a farm is that almost our entire meal came from either our garden or our neighbors’ farms. We grew the vegetables all ourselves, and got the turkey from our friend, Jay Lavery. (The famous Dancing Farmer from Youtube.) We also love to try out new recipes for Thanksgiving. Twists on the traditional. We get our fill of delicious, classic Thanksgiving dishes when we visit others’ houses, so when we’re at home, we get creative.
Before we show our photos of this year’s celebration, we want to let you know how truly thankful we are that you all let us do the work we love to do. We never imagined that we’d be able to support this farm by ourselves, let alone create jobs for so many others. Because our home is one of the oldest and most historic houses in our area, we really consider it our duty to keep it standing and in good shape for the next generation. It’s your help that lets us do that. So even though Thanksgiving is only one day a year, we wake up each morning thankful for what we have and determined to pay it forward.

Beekman 1802 is a #metoostep2 company
As the owners of a small business in a jobs-challenged rural area, we’ve been thinking a lot about the recent sexual harassment national awakening.
While we’re thrilled that women at larger corporations have begun speaking out and changing their workplaces, we’re also worried that this movement will pass over 50% of America’s working women – those women working in small businesses.
Many small businesses – especially in rural areas – don’t have HR departments. They are predominantly owned and operated by men. Sometimes generations of men from the same family. Women working in these environments have little or no recourse when it comes to workplace sexual harassment.
Think about it. They can’t even post #metoo on their social media without putting their job in jeopardy. Their only option to escape harassment is quitting. And how can she quit when there are no other jobs to support her family?
But just because a woman can’t speak up, doesn’t mean she can’t be helped. There has to be a “Step 2” after #metoo. We’d like to encourage “safe” small businesses to proclaim themselves #Metoostep2 Companies and begin anonymously recruiting these women.
And we’ll start with our own. If you are trapped in a workplace near us, and can’t escape systemic harassment, email us directly: metoostep2@beekman1802.com.
We can’t promise that we’ll have a job right away, but we can promise anonymity, priority hiring consideration, and access to our own HR resources to help you find options.

Project | Maple Place Setting
Although we appreciate the beauty of a large maple tree bursting with color, the elegant silhouette of the leaves on their own is just as impactful.
Materials
6 leaves of different sizes
Embroidery needle
Embroidery floss
Instructions
Using the largest leaf as your base, layer a slightly smaller leaf on top of it, and the smallest leaf on top of that.
Use a needle threaded with embroidery floss to stitch an X in the center of all three leaves to secure them together. Tie a knot on the back to secure. Repeat with the remaining three leaves.
