40 Snippet #7

Sing.

We shall be together.

Sing.

We're like crystal.

Sing.

As we wind on down the road.

Sing.

So why don't we go?

Sing.

I hope you're singing now.

Sing.

"Tyler."

Top 100: #51

As a teen in the 80's, I grew up hearing a lot of Madonna. I actually didn't really start liking her until her William Orbit produced album Ray Of Light. But I always did like this song because it seemed so personal and melancholy. Still like it a lot.
"Live To Tell" by Madonna
I have a tale to tell
Sometimes it gets so hard to hide it well
I was not ready for the fall
Too blind to see the writing on the wall

A man can tell a thousand lies
I've learned my lesson well
Hope I live to tell
The secret I have learned
'till then, it will burn inside of me

I know where beauty lives
I've seen it once, I know the warmth she gives
The light that you could never see
It shines inside, you can't take that from me

A man can tell a thousand lies
I've learned my lesson well
Hope I live to tell
The secret I have learned
'till then, it will burn inside of me

The truth is never far behind
You've kept it hidden well
If I live to tell the secret I knew then
Will I ever have the chance again?

If I ran away
I'd never have the strength
To go very far
How would they hear the beating of my heart?
Will it grow cold, the secret that I hide?
Will I grow old?
How will they hear?
When will they learn?
How will they know...?

A man can tell a thousand lies
I've learned my lesson well
Hope I live to tell
The secret I have learned
'till then, it will burn inside of me

The truth is never far behind
You've kept it hidden well
If I live to tell the secret I knew then
Will I ever have the chance again?

Writing Tip #62

If you're a writer, time can actually be on your side.

David Seidler, who won the original screenplay Oscar for "The King's Speech," opened his acceptance speech by saying this: "My father always said to me I would be a late bloomer. [big laugh] I believe I am the oldest person to win this particular award. I hope that record is broken quickly and often."
Seidler is seventy-three years old.
There are very few professions where age doesn't matter. But for writing, all it takes is one magnificent work. You might be eighteen with a great story idea, or you might have retired five years ago. It doesn't matter. A great story is a great story.

In Case Your Writing Career Is Going Nowhere

There's always hope.
(The movie above was written by the same man who won the Oscar last night for The King's Speech.)

Guest Appearance

Brian Eno shows up in my next book, 40.
If you don't know who Brian Eno is, shame on you. Maybe you shouldn't bother buying the book (I don't REALLY mean that).
His role is interesting, to say the least.
I think it's kinda cool, but I'm biased.
As someone who encourages creativity, Brian might be pleased if he ever read the book. Who knows.
40 comes out May 4.

"Live and Let Die" by Paul McCartney & Wings
When you were young
And your heart was an open book

You used to say, "Live and let live"
(You know you did, you know you did, you know you did)
But if this ever-changing world in which we live in
Makes you give in and cry

Say live and let die
Live and let die
Live and let die
Live and let die

What does it matter to ya, when you've got a job to do, you gotta do it well
You gotta give the other fellow Hell

You used to say, "Live and let livin'"
(You know you did, you know you did, you know you did)
But if this ever-changing world in which we live in
Makes you give in and cry

Say, live and let die
Live and let die
Live and let die
Live and let die

Love this song even though I'm not sure what it all means . . .
"Canvas" by Imogen Heap
Slow heart dark wait down love black canvas
Revolve within, you understand
Fragile earth where cracks in the temperature
Keep it cool to give, you understand
Keep it cool to give, you understand
Slow heart dark wait down love black canvas
Revolve within, you understand
Fragile earth where cracks in the temperature
Keep it cool to give, you understand

Cause I just can't find the strength to pull you up and keep you taut
No I just can't find the strength to hold you up and keep you taut

Hijacked lost track light fades another day left
Long shadows lure you in
The more you look the less you see
So close your eyes and start to breathe
Oh, suit yourself, this wasn't easy
Mm, suit yourself this wasn't easy

Oh, I just can't find the strength to pull you up and keep you taut
No, I just can't find the strength to hold you up and keep you taut

Wo-wo-wo-wo-wo
Wo-wo-wo-wo-wo
Wo-wo-wo-wo-wo-wo
Da-day-hay
Wo-wo-wo-wo-wo
Wo-wo-wo-wo-wo
Wo-wo-wo-wo-wo-wo
Da-dada-ho

Cause I just can't find the strength
To keep you taut

One Sentence Writer's Theme

Read an article on Cormac McCarthy and they summed up the theme of all of his novels with this question: How do we create meaningful lives in a chaotic world where God is silent and death is inescapable?
I thought of my own novels and wondered what theme connects all of them. I came up with something like this. Not quite as eloquent, and not a question:The world is broken and so are we, but God allows second chances in surprising ways.
