Leadership Potential

Leadership potential includes the ability for strategic thinking, dealing with ambiguity, interpersonal skills, openness to feedback, leading others, influencing, risk-taking…. The list goes on…

These are in summary a way of how the mind is managed and used in different situations, experiences, and circumstances to get optimal results.

However, imagine you hire a person with the above skill set and mindset, how do you know this person really has the right values and ethical behavior?

Leadership Potential exists in two areas:

Mind potential 
Heart potential 

I could call it, external leadership and internal leadership

External leadership is what I mentioned earlier. They are mainly focused on the functioning of the mind (a good mind)Internal leadership links to life experiences, your personal values, your purpose in life, the ability to overcome health issues, the ability to forgive, the ability to work through regrets in life, the ability to deal with loss

We all go through internal leadership, but this is rarely talked about!

Truly sustainable businesses include external and internal leadership to hire talent and TRUE LEADERSHIP POTENTIAL that has both mind and heart aligned.

If not, there may be a disconnect between what the leader is trying to achieve and who he/she really is on the inside. This could result in high performance but lack of empathy, burnout, high levels of stress, or leaving the company too soon…

It is only when the heart is involved that true leadership potential can emerge.

And this starts in the hiring process for the company, and on the other hand understanding ‘’the life journey’’ for the candidate to fulfill their true leadership potential.

The company’s HR should be one of the most self-aware leaders in the company because they recruit and assess this leadership potential both internally and externally.

And for us as individuals… we need to understand our own life journey. Have you been able to understand why you had certain life experiences? Have you forgiven the people that needed to be forgiven? Have you resolved any unfinished business in life? Do you know how to listen to your heart? Are you clear on your values and do you act on them?

To be truly successful on a sustainable basis in life and leadership, both your internal and external self has to align.

Because there is an imbalance in how we operate.

When you experience problems in life, the mind starts to look for solutions, and the mind gives advice and strategies on how to overcome a problem.

But sometimes this needs to be changed to:

You have a problem in life, you are silent, and you give space and time to yourself for reflection. During that time and space, the heart has time to speak and the answer will emerge through insight, a sudden epiphany, or sudden new awareness that will solve your problem…

To align your internal and external world, your Suit with your Monk, silence is to start living from within.

Sometimes we can be our own best teacher, because deep down within we know the lesson that needs to be learned, and silence will bring the answer to you.

I remember I was asking a friend often for his opinion. And at a certain point he said, ‘’are you not sure about your decisions’’?

And I said ‘’yes I am but I just need perspective’’.

That’s why they keep reading. That’s why they have a board of advisors. That’s why they have a coach.

Successful people don’t necessarily need more skills. Yes, they can always learn more skills, but what they need is perspective. A different viewpoint. A different way of looking at the same situation, to be able to then make a better decision.

This is one of the reasons I facilitate workshops with senior leaders, to help them get perspective and to increase the quality of their decision-making.

The quality of your life and your success in business depends on the quality of your decision-making. In order to increase the quality of your decision-making, you need to increase your perspective. Facts tell only one side of the story. But perspective can add a lot more dimensions which will then result in better decision making.

So ask for opinions, ask for feedback from trusted people, and have an advisory board next to you. Then listen to your inner self, make sure the decision is aligned with your values and you will be on the right path in life.

There will come times where you will waver and might think you are not cutout for this. This might seem like a huge change that you are now doubting yourself over. By implementing techniques such as leadership philosophy and practical philosophy, you work towards strengthening your beliefs and principles by self-reflecting.

During this life, we lose ourselves along the way. A career transition is a journey toward finding yourself again; rediscovering and redefining yourself. You bridge the gap between your inner and outer world. To achieve this, you need to align your mind and heart. You look into what you strongly desire, look for your life’s purpose and align it with your outer world desires.

And that’s where I see many people struggle in their life and business.

To copy a Guru, apply it, and not see it work. (DISCLAIMER: for some people it does work, but my point will be different)

When it doesn’t work, it is because you have failed to ‘’adapt it to your style’’.

What you need to copy is ‘’the structure’’, ‘’the tools’’, ‘’the mindset’’ (the Suit) but apply it in alignment with your values, your way of speaking, your intuition, your way of communicating.

Why is it so hard? Because for most of us we don’t really know who we are. Yes in our minds yes, but not in our hearts. That’s why it’s difficult to be authentic sometimes because you first need to know who you are what your values are and what your unique purpose or gift is and then be able to communicate it.

If you speak publicly like Tony Robbins it might be that you are not authentic because Tony is Tony, when you copy his style you will hit the wall (been there).

The goal is to copy the public speaking ‘’skills’’ the rationale and then align it with who you are ‘’your purpose, your style, your voice’’ to be authentic.

It is the balance of the mind and the heart, the Suit and the Monk. The mind is how you operate in the external world, and the heart is your particular unique life journey.

In order for you to align both worlds, and to get to know your inner voice, you need to integrate all experiences. You need to learn first who ‘’you are not’’ in order to then realize ‘’who you are’’.

The more you do this process the more you will find freedom from within.

So copy the skills of the Guru, then align it with YOUR purpose, your STYLE, your VALUES.

The Easy Road Or The Hard Road

My parents got divorced when I was 15. My dad took the easy road and left. No conversations just left.

During the break, in one of my workshops, a participant told me, ´´my wife and I are like good friends but I feel she’s not my partner. I love her dearly but I don’t want to make love to her. I prefer to be with someone else and have a real relationship instead of marriage as a friendship.´´

He could just leave and take the easy road, he has the money, the business, the lifestyle and can easily be with someone else easily.

I told him, ´´do you want to take the easy road or the hard road?´´

The easy road is to just leave and leave it all behind. Broken relationships, unfinished conversations.
Sometimes we all have to make these choices in life.

Shall I change my career and dive into the unknown and build a business out of my passion? That’s crazy! It won’t work, and you don´t make a change!

The end result is regret over conversations not had, guilt for not having lived a life true to ourselves, sadness for lost opportunities, and missed life experiences that we truly wanted.

To live life to the fullest you have to be willing to lose all, to then gain everything.

But you want to lose all by making sure you don´t have unfinished business in life. A short-term quick decision is an easy road, but living life to the fullest is taking the hard road with no regrets.
