For kicks I decided to redraw the cover of Marvel’s Star Wars #2 (I can’t find a confirmation of the original artist but Howard Chaykin drew the insides so I’m assuming it’s him).
The original is interesting on a few levels. Most obviously, this scene doesn’t quite happen but regular comic readers know to take their cover images with a grain of salt. Chaykin and company seem to have had limited access to reference material but I decided to use actual cantina patrons (and tried to match them as close as I could to Chaykin’s choices).
One interesting and enlightening thing you notice when doing recreations of other artists work is where and how they fudge. The lower left part of the cover is very tricky—a realistic depiction would result in an awkward tangle of Luke’s laser bolt, Ben’s legs, Dr. Pignose’s legs and so on. In the original, Chaykin went with having Ben’s lower torso just kind of disappear. I went with a similar layout, with Ben’s robes kind of a blending with shadows on the floor (and I’m in no way trying to diminish Chaykin here—the fact that I only really noticed this bit of business 36 years after seeing this cover speaks to the overall strength of the composition).
It also amused me to once again have poor Greedo once again getting fried despite already having the drop on his mark. Oh, Greedo! Will you never shoot first?
There are other aspects of my own choices I’m not entirely satisfied with but this was a heck of a lot of fun to draw so fuck it. If I could somehow figure out a way to do make a regular income drawing stuff like this I’d be a happy boy.

These banned book mugshots are absolutely wonderful – a fine addition to these art and design projects inspired by literature.
Pretty clever and that’s a pretty good Holden Caulfield. I sheepishly admit I don’t recognize two of the references but I’ll spare myself the humiliation of telling you which. In any case, a good excuse to find out more.
Kindle Kuestion for the Masses
I uploaded some documents to my Kindle but can’t figure out a way to have it display the cover art (as opposed to the default generic book cover). Is it something I’m doing wrong uploading it or is it a settings issue? Any tips for an old man trying to Get With the Program?

Hi Alex! I discovered you just yesterday! :) A friend of mine was reading my graphic novel, and told me it made him remember your "Too cool to be forgotten". He also told me they should publish it in Italy soon. Is it true? I'm very curious! E.
Yes! I was just exchanging e-mails with the person who will be translating it. Very exciting, since I don’t think I’ve ever been published “in Italiano” before!
(I say “I don’t think” because an Italian publisher was supposed to do Box Office Poison many years ago but there seems to be conflicting reports about whether it was actually released. I’ve never seen one, in any case).
