Conscious Cat Sunday: Why Your Mindset Matters

Conscious-Cat-Sunday

I’ve been spending quite a bit of time lately thinking about how important it is to maintain a positive mindset – and how challenging it can be in a world that constantly bombards us with messages that are anything but positive.

Everything you think and speak affects your mindset

Maintaining a positive mindset requires commitment and discipline. If you wake up first thing in the morning and think about how hard your day is going to be and how many problems you’ll be facing, then chances are, th...

Mews and Nips: Cat Saves Baby from Freezing to Death

cat_nap_in_box_saves_life_of_abandoned_baby

Masha, a long-haired tabby cat, saved the life of a baby abandoned in the streets of Russia — after she climbed into the box he was discarded in and kept him warm, health officials said. The New York Post reports that Masha got the attention of passers by by meowing. “She is very placid and friendly, so when I heard her meowing, I thought that perhaps she had injured herself,” said Obninsk city resident Irina Lavrova. “Normally she would have come and said hello to me. You can imagine my shoc...

A Farewell to Cat Fancy Magazine

cat--fancy-final-issue

Earlier this week, I received Cat Fancy’s 50th Anniversary issue in the mail. It’s also, sadly, the magazine’s final issue. I had known about the magazine’s demise since the beginning of December, when I received a call from editor Susan Logan-McCracken. As a contributing writer, I very much appreciated that Susan took the time for this personal notification.

Cat Fancy was acquired by I-5 Publishing at the beginning of 2013. In July of 2014, the acquisition of Catster made I-5 Publishing the w...

It’s National Answer Your Cat’s Question Day

answer-your-cats-question-day

Cats communicate in many different ways. Their primary means of communication is body language, but they also communicate vocally. It’s up to us as their guardians to learn how to interpret their communications, but no matter how well trained a human may be in learning to speak feline, sometimes, we all wish our cats could talk. Apparently, somebody felt that this wish for better interspecies understanding deserved a national holiday, because believe it or not, today is National Answer Your C...

What to Expect When Your Cat is Expecting

cat with kittens 2

Cats can become pregnant as young as four months of age, which is why it’s important to spay female cats before they go into their first heat. I’m not going to mince words here: I feel strongly that allowing your cat to have a pregnancy because you believe that your cat needs to have the experience of giving birth, or your children need to witness the “miracle of life,” is unacceptable. There may, however, be circumstances when you find yourself caring for a pregnant cat. Perhaps you took in...

Pain Management for Cats is Not Optional

pain-management-for-cats

Cats are masters at masking pain. This ability to hide pain goes back to their wild origins; in the wild, a sick animal becomes prey. While acute pain may be fairly obvious to cat guardians, it may be more difficult to discern whether your cat is in pain when it comes to chronic pain from conditions such as arthritis. Sadly, many veterinarians still overlook signs of feline pain, or are not aggressive enough in treating it.

Pain management for pets has undergone significant changes in the past...

Conscious Cat Sunday: Minimize Distractions

Conscious-Cat_Sunday

One of the many things I admire about cats is their ability to focus. If you’ve ever watched a cat stalk her prey, you know that even though the cat is very much aware of what is going on around her, she will not break her concentration on waiting for just the right moment to pounce. What seems to be so easy for cats can be an overwhelming challenge for humans.

We are constantly exposed to a never ending stream of information and stimuli. Studies have shown that the brain cannot effectively sw...
