Review: The Mediterranean Universe: Imagining Feline Civilization by John Newmeyer
When you get an email from Julie Newmar, the original Catwoman, asking whether you would like to review ” a funny new book about cats written by my brother with me,” there is only one right answer. I was delighted to receive a copy of The Mediterranean Universe, along with a personal note from Ms. Newmar.
The book’s cover made me smile right away – and I didn’t stop smiling throughout the entire book. This quirky little book presents a fantasy of life on a planet where cats are in charge. The...

With our sixth anniversary rapidly approaching, we have a few surprises in store for you, and we’re excited to share our first one with you today: We have a new look!
We hope you like our beautiful new header – Allegra and Ruby helped design it, and they’re very proud of their contribution. We also generally brightened things up a bit to make things easier to read. Let us know how you like our shiny new look!

Giveaway: Win 20 Pounds of SmartCat All Natural Litter
SmartCat All Natural Cat Litter is a lightweight clumping litter made 100% from grasses grown in the USA, with no added chemicals or fragrances. It is virtually dust free to minimize respiratory problems for both the cat and the pet parent. It has a creamy, sand like texture. It quickly absorbs urine, which helps reduce tracking outside of the litter box. The odor causing components of the urine are trapped in the clumps. The litter begins dewatering the clump to minimize the biodegradation (b...

Why I Got Pet Insurance for Allegra and Ruby
I’ve been on the fence about getting pet insurance for a long time, mostly because I’d rather put my money in a savings account than pay it to an insurance company. I’m pretty disciplined about putting money aside for Allegra and Ruby’s regular veterinary care. At five and four years of age, they’re both young, healthy cats. They get regular check ups twice a year.
Of course, this is also the best time to get pet insurance: while cats are young and healthy. And while I can easily cover their...

Meet StovePipe The Traveling Cat
StovePipeCat is one lucky kitten. With less than an hour left to live at a Los Angeles, CA “shelter,” the little kitten was rescued by a volunteer who fostered him and his two biological sisters, and who rescued three other cats while she was at it. Two weeks later, StovePipeCat was adopted to a married couple with grown children and a step-sister cat. Little did StovePipeCat know how much his life would change.
A week after he was adopted, he left on a 20-day, 4,000+ mile road trip from L.A....

Does Your Mood Affect Your Cats?
Studies have shown that our stress can affect our cats to the point of impacting their health, but so far, studies about “social referencing,” the fancy term for the tendency of a person to look to a significant other in an ambiguous situation in order to obtain clarifying information, have only been done in dogs. New research conducted at the University of Milan in Italy suggests that cats may also use social referencing.
The study
NPR reports that in the study, which included 24 cats and thei...

Conscious Cat Sunday: Super Bowl, Kitten Bowl, and Spirituality
We’re not big football fans here, although Ruby has been trash talking about the Seahawks (she says how hard could it be to take down a bird?) We will be watching the Kitten Bowl, and we’ll probably watch at least part of the big game, just for the commercials. Since I believe that there are spiritual lessons in everything, I spent some time last week thinking about what the spiritual aspects of football and the Super Bowl might be.
On the face of it, football would seem like the least spiritu...

Mews and Nips: Isis and Joan: A Story of Love, Miracles and the Power of Social Media
I first told you about Isis and Joan back in December. When Joan, who suffers from terminal liver disease, was rushed to a hospice last November, she only had one worry: what would happen to her beloved cat Isis? Joan continued to pay the rent on her apartment and frantically contacted animal rescue groups to find a new home for Isis. Her plight caught the attention of Dorian Wagner, the founder of the Cute Transport Network, who went to work and launched a social media miracle. Within days,...

Review: Pure, Cat Portraits by Lucas
In this day of e-books and internet videos, it’s rare to come across a really beautiful “coffee table” type book of cat photographs, so I was delighted when I received a review copy of Pure, Cat Portraits. The photos in this book are taken by Lucas, cat photographer and creative director of cat brand Catit.
What makes this book different from other cat photo books is that all the pictures were taken against a simple white background. Lucas let the cats pose however they wanted to, and the resu...
