Sunday Quotes: Be Still

cat-resting-meditating

Finding stillness in the middle of all the chaos in our world is challenging, and it’s never been more difficult than during these last months. I believe that learning to be still, returning to our center, that place inside that settles our fears and calms emotions, is a vital survival skill at all times, but especially now.

I’ve previously shared the Womens’ Meditation Network as one of the resources that has helped keep me sane during this pandemic. Recently, Katie Krimitsos added a “Be Sti...

Mews and Nips: Midnight Cafeteria Feeds Taipei’s Stray Cats

taiwan-cat-cafeteria

The stray cats in a neighborhood of Taiwan’s capital are being well cared for by residents as part of the “Midnight Cafeteria” project. The “cafeteria” is actually 45 small wooden houses painted by Taiwanese artists and scattered across Taipei, giving the cats a place to eat and rest. The project began in a math teacher’s neighborhood, where about 20 neighbors are helping stray cats in addition to their full-time jobs. ““We want to push forward this philosophy that you don’t have to be part of...

cat-fabric-face-masks

We’ll all be wearing face masks for the foreseeable future, so we might as well have some fun with them, right? Our friend Kate Benjamin at Hauspanther has been making fabric masks since the beginning of the pandemic, and she has some of the most adorable cat patterns I’ve seen anywhere.

Kate offers masks in two different styles, a pleated style with a filter pocket, and this origami style. Both styles feature nose wires and adjustable ear loops.

Remembering Ruby: That Time When Ruby Became an Agility Champion

cat_agility

A little over a year later, I still miss my beautiful little girl terribly. I treasure the memories of our time together, even if they’re sometimes more painful than comforting, but that’s as it should be when you’re grieving a loss.

Today’s memory goes back to 2014, when Ruby and I sort of “happened” upon an agility parcours in our kitty playroom. I was playing with her and Allegra with a wand toy, and started dragging it through some of the hollow scratchers and tunnels. She followed it thro...

Make 2021 a Healthy and Happy Year for Your Cat

cat-with-woman

Even though most New Year’s resolutions are abandoned within a month of making them, the New Year is still a good time to start fresh and create some healthy habits for yourself and for your cats. The following tips will help get you started.

1. Feed a species appropriate diet

Nutrition is the foundation for good health for cats and humans, and the most important thing you can do every day for your cat’s health is to feed a species-appropriate diet. If you’re not already feeding a raw, cooked ...

Sunday Quotes: Frustration

cat-frustration

Have you found yourself with a shorter than normal fuse lately? Do you find yourself overreacting to minor mishaps? Do you feel irritable for seemingly no reason? You’re not alone, and there’s even a name for it: pandemic frustration.

I started noticing it a couple of weeks ago when I had a complete meltdown and found myself raging at a poor, unsuspecting Instacart customer service rep after my order was delivered to the wrong address. The rational part of me knew this was not a big deal. They...

Mews and Nips: Meet Elwood, Hospital Security Guard Cat

A hospital in Richmond, Australia has a  unique security guard: his name is Elwood, and he is a cat. He even  has his own “official” badge. When Elwood first started appearing on the hospital grounds, staff assumed he was a stray, but he actually lives across the street. Much to the delight of hospital staff and patients, he takes his “job” seriously and comes to work each day. For more about Elwood and photos of him on the job, visit MyModernMet.com.

If you missed any of the stories featured ...
