Not One More Vet: Suicide Among Veterinarians

not-one-more-vet

When you take your cat to your vet and see his or her smiling face (even if it’s just on a screen or behind a mask right now,) as he or she cares for your cat, the last thing you probably think about is that this kind and compassionate person is at a higher than normal risk of suicide. The sad reality is that suicide in the veterinary profession has been a growing concern for quite some time.

A crisis that few people know of or understand

In 2019, the CDC released the first study to ever exami...

love-and-above-cat-club-self-care-cat-lovers

“Love yourself like you love your cat.”

I have something a little different for you this Sunday. I’d like to introduce you to a new website, Love and Above Cat Club, created by my dear friend Siena Lee-Tajiri. Siena has an impressive background. She holds a Masters Degree in Holistic Health, certification in many holistic therapies, and she has been working with Jackson Galaxy since 2009. In fact, she was Jackson’s first employee! She is a musician, and, of course, a huge cat lover.

Mews and Nips: Kitten Found Hiding Under Leaves Blossoms Into Magnificent, Confident Cat

cat-leaves-rescue

A Montreal couple was on their way to cat rescue group Chatons Orphelins Montréal when they noticed something moving under a pile of leaves by the side of the road. When they took a closer look, they found a kitten hiding in the dirt. The little stray was cold and afraid. They immediately notified the rescue, and a member of the group dropped everything and rescued the kitten. After being vetted and placed in a foster home where he was socialized and allowed to gain his confidence, the gorgeou...

A growing body of research shows that mindfulness reduces stress, increases focus and cognitive flexibility, makes us less emotionally reactive, increases empathy and compassion and just generally makes us happier. In Mindfulness for Cat Lovers, Carole Bosanko, a clinical psychologist who has worked with the National Health Service for over 30  years, shows us how mindfulness and cats are the purrfect combination.

The book features a series of mindfulness ex...

Eusoh Community Health Plan: An Alternative to Pet Insurance

eusoh-pet-insurance

This post is sponsored by EUSOH and contains affiliate links*

EUSOH is a community health sharing plan that reimburses pet parents for veterinary expenses. Unlike traditional pet insurance, pet parents join groups and fund each other’s veterinary costs.

I’m a firm proponent of pet insurance. For me, the bottom line is that if you can’t afford an unexpected $1000 or $2000 for a medical emergency, or even more for a chronic serious illness, you owe it to yourself and your cats to consider opti...

An Update on Allegra’s Health

Allegra-sunshine

This post contains affiliate links*

Let me start this off by saying don’t be alarmed by the subject line. Allegra is doing just fine. We’ve been dealing with a few ongoing health issues, and I thought it was time to update you.

The bottom line: Allegra is hyperthyroid. This came as quite a surprise to both me and my vet.

Mild, non-specific symptoms

Allegra did not show any of the symptoms typically seen in hyperthyroid cats. She wasn’t losing weight, she didn’t have a voracious appetite, she w...

Sunday Quotes: Everything Will Be Okay

cat-everything-okay

I thought today’s quote by John Lennon fits in nicely with our recent theme of hope.

If you need a little extra help, I encourage you to try a new meditation from the Women’s Meditation Network, Everything is Going to be Okay. It’s less than 10 minutes long, and it will help you connect with the stillness inside of you.

Click here to listen to the Everything is Going to Be Okay meditation.

I find that consciously shutting down my mind really helps me stay grounded when it’s trying to run away ...
