Sunday Quotes: The News and Your Mental Health
I talk a lot about taking a newsbreak in my Sunday columns, and I find that when I stick to avoiding the news, it makes a tremendous difference in both my mental and physical well being. When I went away last weekend, I didn’t check my phone except for texts from Allegra’s cat sitter, and the difference in how I felt was remarkable.
Being obsessed with the news is far more common that most people realize. A 2017 study by the American Psychology Association revealed that 95% of adults say they ...

Mews and Nips: Cat Helps Save 83-Year-Old Woman Who Had Fallen Down a Ravine
Thanks to her worried cat, an 83-year-old woman in Cornwall, England, who had fallen down a ravine, was found and rescued. Her black cat Piran had meowed relentlessly at the point where she’d fallen, leading a neighbor, who had been helping search crews, right to her. For more about Piran the hero cat, visit NPR.org.

Not One More Vet Documentary Aims to Raise Awareness of Suicide Among Veterinarians
We previously wrote about the devastating rise in suicide rates among veterinarians. Most cat parents have no idea that the compassionate and smiling person who cares for your cat is at a higher than normal risk of suicide. A 2019 study analyzing 10,000 veterinarian deaths found that 1 in 6 veterinarians have considered suicide.
Not One More Vet DocumentaryA new documentary hopes to shed light on the issue by telling a story around several dramatic arcs: the mental health researchers and prof...

Raw Food for all Life Stages, from Kitten to Senior
This post is sponsored by Darwin’s Natural Pet Products*
Embraced for decades by holistically oriented pet parents and holistic veterinarians, raw feeding is becoming more and more mainstream as cat parents look for alternatives to feeding highly processed commercial pet foods. I’ve been feeding raw for the past ten years, and have seen my cats thrive on it. For the past five years, I’ve been feeding Darwin’s, and it has become a perennial favorite.
Feeding your cat a species-appropriate diet ...

Allegra’s World: The Getaway Weekend
Hi everyone, it’s Allegra! I want to tell you about my weekend! You see, Mom went away for three days for what she said was a “much needed getaway.” I don’t know why she needs to get away, because I think our life here is just purrfect, but I do understand that humans sometimes need a change of scenery.
Before things got weird in the world out there, Mom used to go away every couple of months, and I got used to not having her here all the time, but she hadn’t been anywhere since last Septembe...

Mews and Nips: Police Responding to Noise Complaint Find Cat Home Alone
When residents of an apartment building in Spain called the police to complain that someone was blasting music and keeping them awake, the officers found no one at home. When they located the owner of the apartment, he told them that his cat has the habit of turning the stereo on and moving the volume button with his paw. All was well when the owner returned home to turn off the music, although his little party animal might have been disappointed. Read the full story in Newsweek.
