Mews and Nips: Can Cats See Ghosts?

cat-ghost-staring

If you’ve ever watched your cat starting at something that doesn’t seem to be there, you might have wondered whether cats see things that we can’t. We know cats’ senses are more developed than humans’, so perhaps it’s not such a stretch to ask this question. Just in time for Halloween, Jackson Galaxy talked to Yahoo!Life about this topic. “”If you believe in the spirit world, as I do, then it’s much easier to take the leap that your cats are experiencing something in a realm that’s beyond the ...

Remembering Ruby: Ruby and the Leaves

tortoiseshell-cat-maple-tree

It’s now about two years ago that Ruby was first diagnosed with advanced kidney disease. Sometimes it still seems like it was just yesterday, and at times it’s still incomprehensible that my little girl is no longer with us. I’m grateful I have eight years of her column to look back on to trigger specific memories, because much as we don’t want to believe it, time does blur what we remember.

Ruby was always fascinated by leaves blowing around outside the window, especially on the deck, where ...

Assisi Loop Giveaway – 2 Winners!

assisi -loop-cat

This giveaway is sponsored by Assisi Animal Health

Since cats are so good at hiding pain, it can be difficult for even the most dedicated cat parent to recognize. By the time pain become obvious, chronic pain may have already had a considerable impact on the cat’s quality of life. While there are conventional pain medications that can help control feline pain, most come with considerable risk and negative side effects. The Assisi Loop provides safe and effective pain relief without adverse eff...

CatPAWS Kitty Comfort and Therapy Program Brings Joy to Assisted Living Residents

cat-holding-hand

The Helen Sanders Cat Protection and Welfare Society in Seal Beach, CA has a very special program: the Kitty Comfort and Therapy Program brings cats and kittens into an assisted living facility.

The program was inspired by beloved children’s book author Priscially Maltbie. Maltbie, a lifelong cat lover, spent the last  years of her life in an assisted living facility. Since she couldn’t have cats of her own there, CatPAWS took some of their rescue cats to visit her. Maltbie passed away in 2014...

Tably Monitors Your Cat’s Well-Being and Mood

tably-app

At the recent American Association of Feline Practitioners Conference, a recurring topic was the use of AI (artificial intelligence) to help detect pain in cats. We all know cats are masters at hiding signs of pain, so any tool that can help us identify pain before cats show signs is a good thing in my book. Tably is a new AI based app that is designed to monitor your cat’s mood by simply pointing your phone at her face.

You can use the app in one of two ways: you can either take a live photo ...

The Best to Worst Cat Foods

best-to-worst-cat-food

If you’ve read this blog for any length of time, you know that I’m passionate about species-appropriate nutrition for cats. Cats are obligate carnivores, and they need meat not only to survive, but to thrive. You can find many of the articles I’ve written about this topic in the Feline Nutrition section right here on this site. I also provide one-on-one consultations if you need help with transitioning your cat to a healthier diet.

You can find my recommendations of what to feed your cat here....

Mews and Nips: 101-year-old Woman Adopts Oldest Shelter Cat

101-year-old-woman-adopts-oldest-shelter-cat

In Monday’s post about how cats enrich the lives of older adults, we referred to the adoption of a 19-year-old cat by a 101-year-old woman. I applaud the Catawba County  Humane Society to make this adoption possible. Talk about a match made in heaven! In my opinion, far too many rescue groups and shelters won’t adopt to senior citizens, and while I understand that the concern of what happens to the cat if the person becomes ill or dies is valid, I see no reason not to adopt to a senior citizen...
