How to Manage Sales as an Author, and My Own “Special Sale!”

Advertise here with Beacon Ads

Around here, “Black Friday” seems to be a bigger holiday than Thanksgiving or Christmas — the hustle and bustle is taken to a new level with midnight openings, stampedes of human beings that often end in death (no joke), and insane lines at just about every big box store possible.

To add to the mix, retailers have embraced the “offshoot” holidays, “Small Business Saturday” and “Cyber Monday,” both lesser-known and both hopefully maintaining lower death counts.

But...

How to Increase Your Writing Output with Less Technology

Advertise here with Beacon Ads

The start of my freelance writing career was a careful balancing act. I’d recently quit my job as a barista to force myself to find bigger and better things. The first work I found was a gig with the content mill Demand Studios, and it was one of my first experiences without a boss telling me what to do. To make enough money to pay the bills, I determined I would need to write about eight articles a day, five days a week. I had to write thousands of words per da...

Advertise here with Beacon Ads

I’ve been slammed lately — too much work at work, too much work at home, and too much work all around.

It’s fun in some ways — I like staying busy, and I like everything I’m doing. The question I’ve been asking myself though is this:

Am I doing everything efficientlyand effectively, or am I just staying busy?

Am I being productive,or am I just being active?

If you’re at all someone who likes to stay busy, you probably suffer from this as well. You might feel:

Like yo...

Structuring Your Novel – Why You Need To, and Why You Need This Book

Advertise here with Beacon Ads

This post is a LONG time coming (sorry Katie!), but I wanted to take a little more time and devote a blog post to the AMAZING book recently released by fellow author and friend, K.M. Weiland.

The book is called Structuring Your Novel, available here, and if you’ve written anything, or want to write anything, this is a book you need to get.

I just want to give a brief overview of the entire book, so you can get an idea of what you’re getting with it. You can decide...

Don’t Judge A (Self-Published) Book By Its Cover

Oh wait…do judge a book by its cover.

It’s what we all do anyway.

This week, after a week-long hiatus due to some personal/family situations, I’m back and ready to take NaNoWriMo by the horns. But first, here’s a look at what’s been going on the past couple of weeks.

99designs.com

If you haven’t heard of it, 99designs is an online company that creates a “buyers market” for all things design — websites, book covers, apps, icons, and more.

I’ve been using it to create...

As Internet speeds increase, we have the ability to do more online with useful sites and programs. But on the flip side, it gives us more ways to get digitally distracted, cutting into productive writing time.

If you find your mouse wandering to distracting sites like Facebook or Twitter too many times throughout the day, your writing...

10 Ways to Get Ready for NaNoWriMo

Advertise here with Beacon Ads

Only a few more days and then we’re off and running for this year’s National Novel Writing Month. It’s a fast-paced, intensive month of writing, and while you don’t have to write an actual novel, the goal is to hit 50,000 words.

My own first experience with NaNo allowed me to finish my first novel, The Golden Crystal, which is free today and tomorrow only (10/29 and 10/30).

That’s 1,667 words a day.

That might be way above your daily goal, or that could even be wel...
