I am free; there are no strings on me!

Greetings friends,

As many of you know, last weekend was full of excitement for comic book fans everywhere. It marked the US release of Avengers: Age of Ultron and celebrated 2015’s official free comic book day. The new Avengers movie was fantastic! I highly recommend it. It is also the source of this week’s blog title which sent chills down my spine when I first saw the trailer for the film. I managed to pick up a copy of almost every free comic available this year after going to two different participating comic book stores:

Vision Ultron

Comic Book University – This is store I frequent and have a pull list at.

Downtown Comics North – This is where I met Neal Adams earlier this year.

The comics that I was most excited about and had to get a copy of are as follows:

Doctor Who Special

Fight Club (Bonus – The Strain)

Hatter M: Love of Wonder

Legendary Comics Sampler

TMNT: Prelude to Vengeance

Odin reading Hatter M

This week marks the official end of this semester of college and good grief it was a challenging one. I have successfully completed Intermediate Algebra and Diversity and Ethics in Psychology. I learned a lot from both classes and made quite a few new friends in the process as well. However, I am glad it’s over! Next week, I am on vacation for a week from my day job and plan on finishing up Grim Bureaucracy and Enter the Dark Watchman. Next week I also plan on attending the Expo Five concert on Tuesday in Louisville, KY. Three of my favorite bands (Delain, Sabaton, and Nightwish) and playing and it is going to be an epic show!

Lately it has been on my mind to try to de-clutter/reduce the objects which I currently surround myself with. This is an arduous task. I have many collections that continue to keep growing. In honor of Rocket Raccoon I am calling it my “I need this, it’s important to me” disease. I collect comic books, books, movies, swords, and various other pop-culture items. I’ve amassed quite a collection and am quickly running out of room so I have been putting my belongings through a quick survey. How important is the item to me? When was the item last used? What are the odds of me using the item again? This system has been very helpful for me and it also helps when I put items through a similar survey before purchasing them. Some of the items I have been able to sell which an added bonus. Part of my struggle I believe is assigning too much importance to the item. To date, there has rarely been an instance where I have regretted getting rid of something. Who knows, maybe I can feature some items in giveaways?

Grim Bureaucracy

Greetings friends,

Three weeks left of this semester of college and then I will have a break for the summer! My day job will continue, but at least the demands of my time will become a little less. This year is going to be the year of The Dark Watchman. I’m super excited about where the series is going. Hopefully I can grease the gears so to speak of the avenues in which I can get the story out for everyone to enjoy at the most optimum level possible. My blog here will be the best place to get any new information and later this year my mailing list will become the new best way.

I’ve worked with Sean Yager again to develop some new logos for the good guys and the bad guys for The Dark Watchman series. Here is the logo for the Legion of Light and the Seal of the Order of Darkness

Legion Of Light Seal of Sacrifice

The Legion of Light logo design is based on the shield of the trinity. The Seal of the Order of Darkness is based off of a standard pentacle with the addition of shadowy hooks that symbolize the tendency of the order to try and corrupt the general populace. The purple is a depiction of magical energy. I love how Sean added the aspect of the energy being eaten away as if it was in itself corrupted.

Also, I have worked with Sean to develop some other new art items. I plan on unveiling them when I release the book trailer and start promoting Enter the Dark Watchman. I’m working on the details of these in addition to the details of new cool giveaways as well!

Here is another excerpt from my current novella project Grim Bureaucracy:

My hand felt like it was about to fall off after signing all of the paperwork in front of me. We weren’t allowed to get stamps. Those were only available in Heaven. I guess it’s better than Hell, there you had to actually use your own blood. I’ve heard of times when people have completely dried themselves out before and had to wait for their blood to replenish itself. They are forced to sit and watch as paperwork keeps stacking up in front of them unable to sign no matter how much they try. A chill ran down my spine just thinking about it. I twirled my infinite ink pen in my hand with a newfound appreciation for it. My phone beeped.

“Sir, its Mordiki. We finally got a hold of Lucifer, I will transfer him through.”

My phone beeped. I hit the green button to receive the call.

I leaned forward and rested my head upon my thumbs with my hands folded in front of my face, “Lucifer, what’s this I hear about you wanting to provide me with a—how did you put it, a sizable suppository?”

“Yeah, one of your lackeys called me up saying something about how you want the soul of this guy Warren Reed. You can’t have him. Once in hell, always in hell baby. If you think you can try to muscle me into it then I’ll shove that scythe of yours up your ass. The only thing you’ll be reaping is major indigestion. Unless…” He trailed off.

I rolled my eyes and sighed, “Unless what.”

“Well, I’m glad you asked. By the way, thanks for the new reaper soul you sent down here. We will fix him right up. Listen anyways, perhaps we could work something out off of the books. I just recently added on a new torture room to the west wing here in Hell. It is sadly fairly empty at the moment. I want to get some new meat to throw in there and you’re just the guy to help me out. I want 2000 souls of any type and one special soul in particular. The soul of H.P. Lovecraft.”

“Why do you—never mind I don’t want to know. Also, apparently you don’t understand the problem with Warren Reed. He was taken before his time was up. He has to be brought back to life so that order is restored. Why would we kill off 2000 people just to appease you? Besides, they would be taken before their time too.”

“I want H.P. Lovecraft because I want his imagination. Could you imagine the Hell that Lucifer and H.P. Lovecraft could dream up together? It makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside just thinking about it. Also, you misunderstood me. The souls could all come from Purgatory silly. That’s where Lovecraft is after all.”

“You don’t think I have enough paperwork to do already? Could you imagine how much would be involved in trying to get a transfer request in of that magnitude? Not to mention that kind of thing would need Heaven’s approval. They would never allow…”

“I said off the books you idiot.” Lucifer interrupted. “We could smuggle them somehow, you’re the grim goddamn reaper and I am Lucifer. We could make this work with no sweat about it. Whaddya say friend?”

“We aren’t friends you conniving jackass of all trades. You were in Heaven once and you couldn’t even get that right. You’re an indelible cosmic fuckup and an otherworldly wag. You will be getting no souls. You will give me the soul of Warren Reed. If not, then I will use my skills to find you and I won’t kill you. I will make you suffer. The likes of which will impress even you.”

“Ha, good luck.”

Lucifer hung the phone up on me.

Shortly after Mordiki beeped in on the speakerphone, “Grim sir, um—there has been a major influx of souls into Purgatory. Apparently Lucifer just released some kind of plague or something on Earth. We are going to have to work overtime for ages to process…”

I cut him off, “Mordiki, place all of that paperwork into a separate box and do nothing. Lucifer has crossed the line. We will forward all of that paperwork to be completed in Hell. Assign all staff to restore the souls in Purgatory that require being brought back to life. I’ll personally go and secure Warren Reed.”

P.S. If you haven’t checked out Sean’s website Misuse of Mana please go do so! He is a great artist and has a fantastic web comic called Flame Child.

Abandon All Hope Ye Who Enter Here

Greetings friends,

Happy Easter!

Sorry about the lack of post for the last couple of weeks. Midterms have passed for the spring semester for my college classes and things are getting serious. My math class has become super intensive with radicands, complex numbers, and quadratic formulas. My psychology class has increased the scope of some of our projects a bit as well. The frequency of my posts may become less frequent for a while.

Also, I am working on studying the ins and outs of publishing e-books. My goal is to expand my current books to the Nook, Kobo, Smashwords, and iBooks in order to be accommodating for as many readers as possible. All future releases would be released on those platforms immediately in addition to my typical Amazon releases. The biggest struggle for me thus far is tweaking the formatting for different types. Setting a manuscript up for an e-reader is a completely different monster than setting a manuscript up for printing, at least according to my current experience. I’m working on developing an e-mail newsletter as well that will be powered by mailchimp. Some of the current content I am planning for the newsletter will be announcements of new releases, early artwork reveals, reviews and recommendations, exclusive freebies, and other TBD exclusive content,

Odin with envelope

Here is an excerpt from a novella I am currently working on called Grim Bureaucracy. Please let me know what you think in the comments!

Above the door it said, abandon all hope ye who enter here. A short man holding a clipboard stood in front of the door nervously glancing at my scythe.

The short man spoke up, “Sir, do you have your papers?”

I narrowed my eyes at him, “I’m the grim reaper. I don’t need papers.”

The short man replied, “Well, the t-thing is only demons and souls can enter here…” he trailed off.

I chuckled, “Do you remember when Jesus kicked the door in?”

His eyes glanced around not focusing on anything, “Umm…yeah. Why?”

I nodded my head, “I’m going in. We can do this the easy way or the hard way.”

The short man let out a sigh and his shoulders fell, “Well, can you at least hit me and make it look good so I can say I put up a fight?”

I smiled, “Sure. Where do you want it?”

He thought about it for a brief moment, “My left eye I guess.”

I made a fist, brought it up from the center of my body, and hit him in the eye. He fell to the ground unconscious. His eye should shine up pretty good. I prepped myself to channel all the power I could to kick the door in. With all of my effort I lifted my leg and shoved my foot forward into the door. The walls around it shook profusely and cracks appeared around the hinges. I shook my head and prepped myself once more. With another great effort I lifted my leg again and shoved it forward into the same spot I kicked before. The door flew inward and fell forward against the ground with a loud thud. Sulfur dust flew up around it before settling. I walked through the doorway and noticed another door off to my right. It had a sign that read—Special Hell: Reserved for theater talkers, molesters of children, and network executives that cancel beloved television shows.

The short story for this week is called Zerospace. The Fifth Element and Outlaw Star were major inspirations for it. Hopefully, I can develop it into a more novel length feature at some point. It was originally titled: The Pirates, the Arachnid’s, and the Marshall but I felt that was a bit verbose. Zerospace has a better flow to it. The background of Zerospace is that it is located on the outskirts of what is known as livable space. Zerospace is home to the intergalactic space pirates that use all manners of technology and magic that they have at their disposal. They also control the nasty arachnids that people fear. The arachnids are a nasty creature born out of Zerospace and common to the area. The Marshall has a vendetta against the pirates and a duty as a lawman to protect the citizens of the galaxy from them.

I’ll see you at the barn raising—in Hell!

Greetings friends,

This week I wanted to take some time to mention some of the various writing projects I am working on.

Enter the Dark Watchman

The next installment in the Dark Watchman saga. The main character is named Jack Crimson. He is a homicide detective with a sixth sense when it comes to anything related to the supernatural. It begins with him burying his mother who just died of cancer. His father has been deceased for some time. He buries himself in his work as his form of grieving. Throughout the course of the novel he works two major cases while also dealing with some minor cases as well. The Legion of Light which now has Selene Sterling at the helm assists Jack when he needs help with certain areas that he may not be able to handle well on his own. Jack gets mixed up with some heavy hitters in the supernatural world.

Jebidiah the Demon Slayer

I’m toying with the idea of a novel that would be classified as an Amish supernatural/horror. The writing world is flooded with Amish romance novels. I noticed a lack of Amish supernatural/horror. Lately, I’ve been watching a TV show called Banshee which is a town in Pennsylvania that has a large Amish population. It has ignited my curiosity to develop this story further. So far the best Amish horror novel I have seen on the market is called Amish Vampires in Space. The name of the protagonist in my novel would be Jebidiah Hershberger. The rough synopsis of the first draft of the story would be that he returns home one day after a hard day of work (as a blacksmith) to find that most of his family is killed with the exception of his daughter. His daughter has been possessed by a demon and has slaughtered the rest of the family. A man bursts into the house and saves Jebidiah from being killed by the demon. He then teaches Jebidiah how to be a demon slayer. Jebidiah’s weapon of choice is a blessed axe. He is shunned by his community because they believe that he killed his family. The elders do not believe in any of the supernatural “nonsense” despite the fact that the community is being overrun with it. Greensburg, IN is one of the cities that the demons must take control of in order to take over the world. The man that saves him from the demon suggests that he cut off his beard in order to try to modify his appearance to elude authorities. He refuses. He does however agree to fashion it differently and forms the beard into two separate spirals (like Marco Hietala). He rides a steed. A tagline for the novel would be, “I’ll see you at the barn raising—in Hell!”

Untitled alternate history story

The Nazi’s win World War II and are trying to take over the entire world. Their experiments during the war have led them to be able to modify their soldiers into super soldiers. The main world powers are the Nazi’s, Native Americans, Japanese, Indians, Aztecs, Chinese, and Egyptians. Samurai remain the strongest warriors in Japan and their abilities can rival the genetically modified abilities of the Nazi’s. The Native Americans are warriors that rely heavily on nature and some even have the ability to use some form of nature magic against their enemies. The Egyptians still rely on their faith in their gods to show them the way and bless them with power in order to remain as powerful as they are. The universe however notices that the world if it continues as it is will most likely destroy itself. The Nazi’s are not the only form of corruption in the world. Each world power has its own form of corruption. Seven swords are spread throughout the world. These swords are imbued with magical power and a purpose. Only the seven that wield the swords can restore order to the world and stop the reign of destruction brought about by the Nazi’s. The protagonist will be a Jewish man in a concentration camp that finds one of the swords while he is working as a slave. The sword speaks to him. He uses it to escape and flees from the concentration camp. Throughout the story he will come across the six other wielders and together they will create a revolution by taking the power away from the governments and giving it back to the people.

Grim Reaper short story

The afterlife is just another extension of bureaucracy. The Grim Reaper is the head honcho in Purgatory. One day as he is going through paperwork notices that a man was killed that wasn’t supposed to die yet. In order to restore order the man must be given his life back. However, the man is currently in Hell so it will be no easy task getting the man’s soul back from Satan. Satan is the leader of Hell and is a bit of an asshole.

Let’s Get Personal

Greetings friends,

Those that know me know that I am fairly introverted and a bit anxious at times. What I don’t let show as much is my struggles with depression. There have been times when I have considered what the world would be like without me and thought it might be better because of it. I’ve felt like giving up. Luckily I have a good support system to fall back on when I need it. However, I admit there are times when I don’t always use that support system because I am either too ashamed to admit I need it or feel like no one would care to hear about it. During those times I fortunately developed a creative coping mechanism in the form of writing poetry and stories. My writing really became regular in 2005 and in 2012 I published a poetry book called An Attempt to Fill the Void. The title can be taken literal. The picture of a black hole on the cover is intentional. There were days…weeks…months…years when I felt like my depression was a black hole sucking in every glimmer of happiness around me. I felt broken like my existence was a cosmic error. Anxiety is the biggest struggle I still currently deal with. Another thing that has helped me is studying psychology and learning how to try to reframe certain things. The biggest thing that I have learned is that I am not alone. I’ve known many others that struggle with depression, anxiety, addiction, and other mental illnesses. Some of them have lost the battle.

AATFTV 2.0 Cover

has started speaking out about mental illnesses. Jared plays Sam Winchester in the TV show Supernatural and is one of my favorite actors. If Bad Blood Rising was getting a film or a series, my dream cast choice for Vangetsu would be Jared. When I saw that Jared had joined Facebook and was launching a t-shirt campaign with the message to, “Always Keep Fighting” I had to find out what it was about and promptly ordered a t-shirt which is still available here. After researching To Write Love On Her Arms (TWLOHA) I found that it was an organization that helped with a cause that I am passionate about as well because it hits so close to home. I ordered the movie starring from the TWLOHA website that chronicles the struggle of Renee Yohe who inspired and helped to found TWLOHA. If you can, I encourage you find a way to donate in your own way. The battle is real. Always keep fighting and remember you are not alone.

I want to get An Attempt to Fill the Void to as many people as possible in hopes that it can be inspirational or relatable to anyone else that may be struggling to fill some kind void in their own lives. Download it here. Also, I am making it available to freely download through my social media pages. There is currently a Goodreads giveaway going on for paperback copies as well. Amazon will not let me make it permanently free but I went ahead and set to a free promotion running from 3-14-2015 to 3-18-2015. After that, any proceeds that I get from the digital book or the paperback book I will donate directly to TWLOHA.

Support Your Local Library

Greetings everyone,

In an effort to make Bad Blood Rising available to more readers I have donated a copy to two different local libraries in my hometown of Columbus, IN. Bad Blood Rising can now be checked out at Bartholomew County Public Library and the University Library of Columbus (through IUPUC). I believe that local libraries should be supported when at all possible. They are an important part of the community. Besides, you never know when a hunter may come through your town and need to use the library to help defeat some kind of nasty creature.

Earlier this week I noticed I didn’t have a link to my Pinterest on the website. That has been corrected. Also, since I published the book through CreateSpace and it is a standard size it allows it to be pushed through distribution channels. As a result of this, the book is also available on Barnes & Noble for those that do their shopping there. In addition, if you prefer to shop at other places you should be able to go into any book store and request the book if they do not have it available on the shelf.

On top of working on Enter the Dark Watchman I have been brainstorming ideas for a book trailer. When writing Bad Blood Rising I already had an idea for the Legion of Light logo. A lot of the things they do incorporates basing protection spells off of the shape of the Shield of the Trinity. I took the time to do some brainstorming and came up with the below concept sketches for both the Legion of Light logo and the seal of the Order of Darkness.

Nostalgia

Greetings everyone,

Odin has been very demanding lately. He pressured me into giving away a few mores books this week. Personally, I think he’s a diva and just wants everyone to read about him (Don’t tell him I said that). Congratulations to the Facebook winners! I hope you enjoy Bad Blood Rising and that the first place winner also enjoys the movie Shade of Grey (courtesy of Jakob Bilinski of Cinephreak Pictures). Fate decided the winners with the roll of a die.

There is a new D.W.P. promotional item that I will be giving out at my discretion. Check out the new D.W.P. coaster!

This week has brought forth a ten ton brick of childhood nostalgia. It’s a wonder the internet didn’t explode from the awesomeness. has made a short Power Rangers fan film that stars and and it turned out amazing. It has brought some controversy due to the mature take on Power Rangers and the current rights holders throwing a fit about it infringing on their rights. It has now been pulled from the internet and banned. I stand by the fact that it was a fan film and should be defended by artistic expression since it wasn’t made to turn a profit and was paid for by Adi Shankar himself. In addition, Robot Underdog has created a pilot episode of a live action Dragonball Z series. It is the best live action Dragonball Z project I have seen to date! When I was younger I always wanted to be Tommy or Goku. Both heroes existed as strong role models in my life and J continues to be one of my role models today.

How could you be so Toothless?

Greetings everyone,

Congratulations to the winners of the Goodreads giveaway! Earlier in the week the giveaway came to an end and I am happy to say that 606 people on Goodreads requested it! A lot of people took the time to add it to their “to read” shelf as well. Thank you readers! Five copies of Bad Blood Rising were sent to various states around the United States. If you did not win, hopefully you will take the time to still check out the book. I fixed the sample link and added a sample for An Attempt To Fill The Void… on my books page.

There is a new addition to my family, for those of you that are familiar with How to train your Dragon then you know how awesome this dragon is. I got my fiancée a Toothless for Valentine’s Day. Here are some pictures of him hanging out with Odin.

My research into the realm of philosophy and psychology continues. I’ve made more progress in reading The Psychology of Joss Whedon. The primary focus of the book thus far has been on Buffy the Vampire Slayer. It is fascinating reading about the psychological aspects the different characters. One particular part that has stood out to me is the contrast between the different slayers in the Buffy universe. Most of the other slayers including past slayers have failed to maintain strong connections with family and peers thinking that the connection would be a hindrance. However those very connections are what make Buffy stand out above the rest and prevail where others have not. I look forward to exploring philosophical and psychological aspects in other areas of pop culture. I also look forward to studying the works of Carl Jung, Alan Watts, John Duns Scotus, and William of Ockham.

Lately, I have been working on plot points and obtaining the permission to use certain things in Enter the Dark Watchman. I am excited about where the story is going and look forward to figuring it all out myself and then writing it for you all to enjoy. As I have mentioned before, it has been officially started and the main plots fleshed out but I still have a lot of work to do. I’ve heard back from the IMPD (Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department) and they said that although they can’t give me official permission to use the agency name that I am still OK to use it as long as I don’t do anything to slander the agency. Since it is a public agency it falls within public domain. Those of you that have read the sample and/or have started reading Bad Blood Rising know that I like to use band lyrics in the front that pertain to the story even if is a loose connection. It has been troublesome trying to get a hold of someone but hopefully I will have the official band lyrics to use for Enter the Dark Watchman soon!

My drawing skills aren’t that great, however I wanted to share an early concept (2007) I had of the cover for Enter the Dark Watchman. An early version of the Dark Watchman’s abilities consisted of transforming into a being of dark energy thus the solid filled in character below. Instead of that, I plan on his character’s having a normal appearance. The dark energy shroud will be similar to that depicted below. My plan is to have John Crimson (A.K.A. The Dark Watchman) standing in the alleyway with his hand on the side of the building. Dark energy will be surrounding him and he will be willing it to burn the shape of an eye into the building similar to my D.W.P. logo.

Happy Valentine’s Day!

Greetings everyone,

I know Valentine’s Day isn’t for a few days but I wanted to go ahead and post this week’s blog. Hopefully you will be spending this weekend with your significant other. If you don’t have one, then hopefully you will be spending this weekend doing something nice for yourself. Also, I am extremely excited to share with you the Valentine’s Day gift I promised!

This weekend is a celebration for some and a bane for others. I’ve had experiences in the realms of both. There have been times when I was alone and said screw it all, ordered pizza, and logged in hours laying waste to the covenant fleet with Cortana by my side and there have been times when I have enjoyed romantic evenings at expensive restaurants gazing into the eyes of my significant other.

John_and_cortana

Will you be my Valentine? (Copyright Microsoft)

Personally, I prefer the latter but I find nothing wrong with the former. Some say that it is just a holiday created by consumerism but I don’t mind it because life gets in the way sometimes of treating everyday like a celebration. Sometimes we need a little reminder to take time out to be mindful of ourselves, our partners, and life in general.

Due to the holiday, the recent birthday of Vangetsu, and pressure by Odin I find myself in a giving mood. There is a new giveaway listed on Goodreads where I am giving away five copies of the paperback version of Bad Blood Rising that will come signed and with my eternal thanks for the interest in my work. If you haven’t got a copy yet, make sure to enter to the giveaway! If you prefer hardcover, I still have six of those remaining and they can be purchased from my store.

My gift to all of my fans is a commissioned drawing of Vangetsu by the legendary comic artist Neal Adams!

Neal Adams Vangetsu

Neal Adams is fantastic person. It was an honor to meet him at the Downtown Comics signing. While waiting in line all of the attendees myself included got to hear some great stories. He is one hell of a story teller. Also, for those that don’t know Neal and Dennis O’Neil are responsible for creating the Batman character Ra’s Al Ghul. One of the stories included the proper pronunciation of Ra’s Al Ghul (apparently people would pronounce the Ra’s with an H sound). It is pronounced like it looks kind of like you were talking about the Egyptian god Ra in a possessive sense, “Ra’s sun disk looks rather large today.” Part of the reason Neal has worked so hard in the industry is because he was greeted by a man in a dark alley in Chicago that told him if he did a good job that he would be allowed to keep his hair. He is an adamant believer that women are smarter than men (a fact that I also find myself learning is true). There were a couple of things that I disagreed with him on such as the best actor that has portrayed Batman (he is for Clooney and I am for Bale) and the relevance of Aquaman. However, the Aquaman story that he mentioned he would like to do sounded pretty cool. He also made a good argument for why Ted Danson should have played Batman.

Surprise Commission!

Greetings everyone,

The Flocco is an artist that I recently started following and admiring. Last week he posted on Facebook about having a sale on commissions. I promptly leapt at the opportunity and commissioned a piece depicting a battle ready Ramona. Bad Blood Rising has female characters too and I try not to conform to stereotypes when working with female characters unless it is a critical component to the story. Even then, I like to have other less stereotypical gendered characters in order to provide some contrast. When I write about powerful female characters I prefer people to think, “That is a badass character!” not, “That is a badass character…for a girl.” Anyways, here are the drawings. Flocco ended up finalizing two of them while he was trying out different poses.

“Come at me bro.”

“I will fuck you up.”

Thank you,

Jake Jeffries
