The #HarryPotter #Christmas Book Tag - #AmReading
Interestingly, this one has a rule where you're not allowed to use any of the Harry Potter books for your answers. That's a nice twist. Good thing I've read plenty of other books too, isn't it? *wink* As usual, I'm not tagging anyone, but if you want to play along, feel free to do so, either in the comments section of this post, or on your own blog. Just don't forget to tell me where your answers can be found, because I'd hate to miss reading them. For now though, here are the questions, along with my own answers:
1. It’s your first Christmas at Hogwarts. What’s one book you’ve asked for this year? The rest of the "Animals Of Farthing Wood" series by Colin Dann. I got the first book last year, and am hoping for the next this year, or maybe more than one of them. Bet I don't get those books though. I mean, there are a lot of books on my list...
2. You spot Hagrid hauling the Christmas tree through the grounds. What is the longest (or heaviest) book you own?
By page count, the longest is probably "The Lord Of The Rings" by JRR Tolkien. But the heaviest is my copy of "Lief's Vegetarian Bible" - a recipe book in more than a dozen braille volumes. Trust me when I say that even a doorstop like "The Lord Of The Rings" is easier to carry around than this thing.
3. It’s time for the famous Great Hall feast. What’s one book you can’t read without snacks? Any of the books in Kim Harrison's "Hollows" series. I don't always snack while eating, but so many of the scenes in those books revolve around food it's hard not to grab a snack while reading that series.
4. Well done, you’ve brewed your first Polyjuice Potion. What’s one book you’d change the cover of? I can't think of one. I mean, I wouldn't change the covers of any books I own. Not just because I can't see them either, but because I did try not to judge a book by its cover even when I had the option to do that. Or maybe I would be able to pick one if I could see them? *shrugs*
5. You receive a brand new Firebolt for Christmas. What’s one book you read super quickly? I read most books super quickly, especially compared to most people. I mean, there are people who read faster than me, but not many I know personally. Most people don't read the 100 books and over that I read each year. So I really can't pick one for this question either.
6. You join Harry for his first proper Christmas. What’s one book you’d love to receive this year? To be honest, any book I don't have a copy of will be welcome. Although, if you want a spacific book to be mentioned, just see my answer for the first question, since my answer for this question would be the same: the next book in the "Animals Of Farthing Wood" series by Colin Dann.
7. You get hit by one of Fred and George’s flying snowballs. What’s a book you wanted to throw across the room? Throw a book across the room? *gasps in horror* I can't do that, and have never been tempted to do so.
8. You’ve just visited Hogsmeade for the first time. What’s one popular book you haven’t read yet? Where do I start? Since I work to my own reading schedule, there are an awful lot of popular books I haven't gotten around to reading yet.
9. Congratulations, you’ve been invited to the Yule Ball. What book about Christmas do you love?
I can't pick just one, but my favourites are: "A Christmas Carol" by Charles Dickens, "The Bear Father Christmas Forgot" by Diana Kimpton, "Winter Solstice" by Rosamunde Pilchar, and "The Little Match Girl" by Hans Christian Anderson.
10. You find Ron’s deluminator. What’s one book that’s helped you through some dark times?
It's not one book, but a series: Diana Gabaldon's "Outlander" series. Those books got me through the early weeks of the pandemic. Being able to escape to 18th century Scotland and America (with some 20th century parts thrown in) was a great - and incredibly welcome - distraction from the year 2020.

We're Moving Home (Again) + Lilie The #Westie Demands More Playing Ball And Going Walkies, And Less Packing Boxes
Hi everyone. This is Lilie the Westie.
~
They’re doing it again!
Mummy and Daddy are putting everything in boxes. I mean, everything! Even more than last time.
They've been slowly doing it for weeks, but now it's getting worse.
~
Mummy says it's because we're going to be moving very soon. She says she's taking us to the new place at the end of next week, and Daddy will follow with the rest of our stuff as soon as he can afterwards. Apparently it's easier for them to do it that way.
But I don't understand. Why are we going to a new place again? Why is it easier if Mummy takes us to the new place before Daddy is ready to come? And why is all their stuff going back in boxes?
It's all so confusing. And I don't like it.
~
Well, OK, there’s still some stuff not in boxes. Mostly though they’ve packed it all, except there’s a few things they haven’t packed, like how there’s stuff in the bathroom, as well as in the kitchen cupboards, and they haven’t packed much of our stuff. I’m not sure why, but Mummy says that’s, “Last minute stuff,” or something.
But that actually makes me more worried. I mean, why haven’t they packed our stuff?
~
Mummy and Daddy say it’s all OK, and we shouldn't worry. They say our stuff will get packed next week in time for us moving, and we’re going to get a nice place with a garden, where me and Logan can go out a million times a day if we want.
I don’t know how many times that is, because I can’t do numbers bigger than ten, but since ten is a big number and it’s more than that, I’m real excited about that idea. Especially since they say garden means outside without the harness and lead, which sounds amazing!
~
Logan is just sad and confused. He’s even more worried than I am, and keeps either climbing in the boxes to make sure they don’t forget him, or hugging Mummy tight to make sure she can’t go anywhere without him. Mummy and Daddy both say we’re definitely going with them to this place with a garden, but Logan is so easily upset and confused that he still feels like he needs to remind them not to forget to take him with them.
Not that I blame him. I also just can’t help being worried about all this putting things in boxes business, even though I’m trying to do what Mummy and Daddy say and not worry.
It would help if they spent more time playing ball with me, and less time packing things in boxes. I wouldn’t have time to worry if we were playing ball more. There should always be more playing ball. Or walkies. Walkies are good too. There should be more walkies and more playing ball, and less packing things in boxes. Even if this garden thing does sound great.
Maybe I’ll go throw my ball at Mummy and see if she’ll play ball with me right now...
She says we're not going for another week, so I'm sure she can spare some time to play, especially since there's not much left to pack other than our stuff.
I mean, I know she says she has a lot to do, but she'll make time to play with me... Right?
~
Before I go, Mummy asked me to tell you we'll tell you all about the new house when we have more time to do so, but with less than two weeks to make the final arrangements - and the complications caused by moving during avirus - time is limited right now, especially with the fact we're moving a long way. I don't know where, but Mummy said something about going home.
Hmmm... I hope that not having much time thing doesn't make my ball and walkies time stop...
~
Either way, she also says to warn you we'll be offline for at least a couple of days next month starting from December 4th (definitely until the 8th, but it could be longer if we have issues getting internet back quickly , like we did last time we moved). But there are posts set up for you, since we'd done some of them ages ago anyhow, and she was ready with the others because she anticipated something like this happening.
~
Right, now... Where did I put that ball...?
Lots of licks,
Lilie

OK. Let's see what I've been reading, watching, and listening to, and which song I'm going to share this week, shall we? After all, that's the point of this post, and why you're here today, right?
*~*
This week I read three books, all of which I was given in exchange for reviews. Well, technically that's not quite accurate, since one of them I was about a third of the way through before this week started, but still. Either way, here's what I read, along with my book reviews.
Daughter of Fire (The Daughter of Fire Saga Book 1)
by Stacey Willis
My rating: four out of five stars
This was a gripping read, which fans of fantasy stories that include the Greek Gods will enjoy; a great read for fans of the Percy Jackson books, though perhaps when they're a little older than the recommended reading age for those, since this one is darker. There were some aspects of the writing style that make me hesitate to give it the full five stars, but those are minor things that I know are all about my reading preferences, so I would still highly recommend this book.
*NOTE: I was given a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. This fact has in no way influenced either my opinion of the book or the contents of this review, and all opinions expressed here are entirely my own.
~
Entrapment (Thor's Dragon Rider, #3)
by Katrina Cope
My rating: five out of five stars
This was an action-packed exciting addition to this series, which I put down with great reluctance when I had to do so in order to do other things - like sleep, eat, etc. I highly recommend it for fans of fantasy based around Norse mythology.
*NOTE: I was given a free advanced copy of this book by the author in exchange for an honest review. This fact has had no influence upon either my opinion of the book or the contents of this review, and all opinions expressed here are entirely my own.
~
The Dark Prince of Albany (Albany Nightingale Duet #3)
by Rachel M. Raithby
My rating: five out of five stars
This book was an incredibly enjoyable read. I absolutely loved getting to know Grayson better through reading his story. I thought he was a great character before, but love him even more after reading this book.
*NOTE: I was given a free advanced copy of this book by the author in exchange for an honest review. This fact has in no way influenced my opinion of the book or the contents of this review, and any opinions expressed here are entirely my own.

This week I've been listening to Christmas music, and this week's Christmas music share is one I'm sharing despite the fact that BBC Radio 1 - who I don't actually listen to, but still - thinks it shouldn't be shared in its original version for fear of offending today's younger sensative listeners. At least, that's what the news article about it said, despite the fact the article also said it still ranks high in the charts to this day, and other BBC radio stations - including BBC Radio 2, which I do often listen to - will still be playing it. Whatever. It's a classic, and I'm going to share it. So, here's "Fairy Tale Of New York" for your listening pleasure. If you're one of those easily offended listeners the BBC is so concerned about, feel free to not listen to it. Just don't press play. It's as simple as that. As for the rest of you... Enjoy!

The Book Snob Tag - #AmReading
2. Format Snob: You can only choose 1 format in which to read books for the rest of your life. Which do you choose, Physical books, Ebooks or audiobooks? Audiobooks, because physical print books aren't any use to me, physical braille books are bulky and take up a lot of space, and listening to a narrator reading an audiobook to you is much nicer than listening to a mechanical voice reading an eBook. I do often read eBooks, because they're cheaper, and some books are easier to get hold of as eBooks. But if I had to stick with only one format, I'd rather audio.
3. Ship Snob: Would you date or marry a non-reader?
Yes. In fact, my hubby isn't a big reader. Kelly does read a bit, but he'd almost always much rather watch the movie or TV show than read the book. As long as we have some things in common, and interests we can share, it doesn't matter. Now, if he was to insist on me reading less... Well, that's another matter, and would be a dealbreaker. But as long as I can read as much as I want - and Kelly does let me do so, even often buying me books - it doesn't matter how little he reads.
4. Genre Snob: You have to ditch one genre – Never to be read again for the rest of your life, which do you ditch? If I can just pick one I don't like to read anyhow: Christian (fiction or non-fiction... I don't like to read either). If I have to pick one I actually read: horror, because I enjoy a good horror story now and then, but the plots of others can be filled with the same kinds of things as you find in horror stories sometimes, and I could live without that genre (especially since they rarely actually scare me anyhow).
5. Uber Genre Snob: You can only choose to read from one genre for the rest of your life, which genre do you choose? Easy: fantasy. It covers such a wide variety of themes and subjects, and is my favourite genre.
6. Community Snob: Which genre do you think receives the most snobbery from the bookish community? I don't know. I know a lot of booklovers, and some of them like some genres while others like other genres. I think all genres get their fair share of negative comments from people who don't like it.
7. Snobbery Recipient: Have you ever been snubbed for something that you have been reading or for reading in general? For reading in general, yes. I've always prefered to read than socialize, and gotten quite a few negative comments because of it over the years. It's not my fault if I'd rather stay home curled up with a book than go to a pub on a Friday or Saturday night. We all have our likes and dislikes, and our prefered ways of spending time. One of mine just happens to be reading. If people don't like that... Well, I'm not stopping them going to the pub without me. In fact, some of them were glad enough of it when they realized it meant I was willing to babysit while they went out, because I got to read to the little one(s) and then read my own book after they went to bed. Yes, I did that several times.

#Ocean Views + Adorable #Dogs + #BonfireNight #Fireworks + My Lockdown Birthday

The above photo shows the view of the ocean that can be seen from our building, and was taken on November 1st 2020. Logan was admiring the view (and barking at things going by) while I was taking the photo, so I got a couple of photos of him at the same time. Here they are:

~
Speaking of pet photos...
I have a couple of photos from me getting a hug from Logan, and some kisses from Lilie, which were taken on the evening of November 11th, just because Kelly thought Logan cuddling me looked cute, and then Lilie wanted a turn for some attention. Here they are:

*~*~*
There were a LOT of fireworks being set off on and around Bonfire Night. I'm not really surprised, since people were trying to make up for not being able to go to displays because of restrictions on what events could be held, and the fact lockdown hit on that day here in England.
~
I was very proud of the petkids. I mean, we had a good five hours of fireworks on Bonfire Night itself, as well as an hour or more every night for several days both before and after November 5th, and most of them they ignored. Well, OK, since she dug in for the night shortly before they started, I'm not sure Artemis was even aware they existed. But, either way, Mollie did get a little upset briefly during some especially loud and close ones, and the dogs did both bark a few times (again, at some especially loud and close ones) but mostly they managed to ignore them. Even Logan - the more nervous of the dogs - was able to mostly ignore the fireworks. Plus, all three were easily soothed and calmed back down quickly.
Well, except the Saturday after Bonfire Night, when I swear people had saved up some of the loudest fireworks in the world and were letting them off on the seafront across from our building, causing me to end up singing to the dogs to calm them down for so long I was starting to lose my voice by the time it was safe to stop (every time I stopped singing before that the dogs would get upset again). But the least said about that evening the better. I just hope the neighbours like my singing as much as the dogs do... Then again, since we're moving soon, I don't suppose it really matters.
I feel sorry for those people who didn't have the same luck with their own furry family members, since I know the roughly week long setting off of fireworks was happening across most of the UK, and a lot of animals weren't too happy about it - including the other dogs living in this building.
~
By the way, we got a short video of the fireworks, so here's a tiny sample of them for you, complete with some barking from Lilie in the background during the first part of the video, since these were some of the ones that apparently deserved to be barked at. Anyway, enjoy!
*~*~*
It was my birthday last Friday, and my birthday wish had been for a final trip to Oscars before we move out of the area. The people who own it have become friends, and I love their food, so I wanted to have it one more time, and also say, "Goodbye," to them.
~
We're avoiding take-away right now because of moving expenses, and have avoided actually eating in cafes in person most of this year (even when the dogs were at the groomer in the Summer we ate food to go, rather than going to a cafe). But I kept the money aside especially for something nice for my birthday meal, and - since I know I can trust them to be careful - was going to make an exception on the eating out rule to go to Oscars one more time before we move away from the area.
Of course, with the latest lockdown starting about a week before my birthday, that wasn't an option any more.
I thought the lockdown was going to cost me my birthday meal from Oscars, which I wouldn't have minded quite so much, except that not only do I consider them friends, but it might have also meant it cost me my last chance to have food from them - unless we come back to this area for a visit at some point and they happen to still be there, but who knows when, or even if, that might happen.
Luckily, Oscars has remained open for pick-up and delivery during the lockdown though, so Kelly was able to go pick me up something from them, so I didn't have to miss out on my birthday meal after all, and got to enjoy a birthday jackfruit po'boy - or however you spell that... It's a sandwich, basically - with chips (fries) from Oscars on my birthday.
~
I'd have gone with Kelly to fetch it, but with the lockdown restrictions, that's just not practical on days with bad weather, which my birthday was... A lot of days have been quite stormy here lately.
Since I couldn’t go and say, “Goodbye,” in person while having my birthday meal, we’re going to try and take a walk down there right before we move so I can do that. Plus, they’d like to see Lilie and Logan one last time before we leave. They’ve watched them grow up – Lilie especially, since they’ve missed a lot of Logan’s puppyhood because of lockdown – and would like to say, “Goodbye,” to them, and see them once more. Since they’ve become friends, I’d like to be able to see them once more in person too, so we’re hoping to go down and see them once lockdown lifts, even if it will just be a quick farewell visit. I’m going to miss them, and not just for the food, though I’ll certainly miss that.
~
I’d like to thank everyone for all the birthday messages. I was blown away by just how many I got this year. They were all very much appreciated, and helped to make my birthday awesome. Even more so because the day before my birthday I was feeling low because I figured my birthday would go by largely unnoticed between all the moving stuff and lockdown meaning I couldn’t really do much for my birthday – not that I do usually do much, but the fact the choice was taken away really got to me, especially after no longer having the Jason Donovan concert to look forward to. So to get several cards, some money, and a couple of presents, and then end up spending most of my birthday and some of the weekend after it responding to birthday messages (seriously... They were still coming in on Monday) was a huge help, and made my lockdown birthday a wonderful one after all. So, once again... Thank you!
~
For those who'd like to see them, here are photos of my birthday cards:

Though this is likely not the order they will appear... I had one from my Mam, one from Rita and her cat, Annie, one from my Dad, one from my honorary cousin, Natalie, and one from my Grandma (Mam's Mother, obviously, since the other one is no longer with us). I also had one from Kelly and the pedkids.
~
Kelly and I don't usually exchange cards, but I asked Lilie the day before my birthday what she'd gotten me, and she got so upset when nothing was produced. She hung her head and put her ears back, and ran to Kelly with a little whimper. I told her it was fine, and I love her even if she forgot my birthday, but she kept coming to me with her ears back to give me tentative kisses like she does to ask for forgiveness when she's been scolded. So Kelly fetched a birthday card from up the road for them to give me, which made Lilie happy. She's so sweet!
~
Because of trying to move, I have an I.O.U. on a gift from Kelly and the petkids, but Kelly brought me a bottle of pop when he was getting my card, to make Lilie feel better about me being given something. He would have gotten me chocolate, but they were out of vegan chocolate. Luckily, the card and bottle of pop were enough to satisfy Lilie, who returned to her happy waggy-tailed self afterwards.
My other presents were a scented candle and an electric vegetable peeler from my Mam.
Everyone else gave me money, at my request. I'll buy myself something nice after the moving is over.
~
I made my own birthday cake this year.
I was going to make a lemon one, but forgot to get lemons, and didn't have any bottled lemon juice on hand, so I just made a ginger one instead.
It's a two layer cake with butter cream icing between the layers, more butter cream icing on top, and cherries to decorate it. All 100% vegan, of course. Here's a photo:

*~*
P.S. We might have a place. A viewing happened yesterday. If everything checks out we'll make it for moving this side of Christmas, though only just. Cross your fingers, toes, and anything else you want to cross, or whatever you do to bring people good luck. Basically, all positive thoughts welcome.

This week was a slow reading week. I read one book and started another, but that's it. At least the one I finished was an excellent read. Anyway, here are the details and review for the book I finished.
Melanin Goddess (Future Earth Chronicles Book 10)
by Barbara G. Tarn
My rating: five out of five stars
This was an excellent addition to the series, which I could’ve easily read in one sitting had life and the need to sleep not gotten in the way. I love the way this one ended, and think it was a perfect way to finish out this cycle of the series.

This week I watched the first few episodes of "The Mandelorian" season 2, which means I'm all caught up now. At least, until the new one comes out in the next few days... I think it's Fridays they release it? I watched last week's episode on the weekend, so will look for this week's over the weekend too.

I also watched some of the DVDs on my to-watch pile, all of which were movies I've seen before. For those interested, here's what they were:

This week I started off listening to more country and 80s music, but switched to Christmas music part way through the week. Whether I'd done that or not though, I'd have still wanted to share another Christmas song with you this week. This time it's one for those in the Southern hemisphere, or who aren't so fond of the colder temperatures so would like to imagine a tropical Christmas. I believe it was actually done for a certain airline, but I thought it was a fun tune, and a nice alternative Christmas song for those who either aren't - or wish they weren't - going to be dealing with colder temperatures over the holidays. So, here's Ronan Keating singing all about walking in a "Summer Wonderland" for your listening pleasure - enjoy!
