Tips on Self-Publishing, Self-Confidence, and Pacing a Thriller

by Joylene Butler, @cluculzwriter Today, we have a collection of helpful tips for writers from thriller writer Joylene Butler: 3 tips for successful self-publishingWrite a compelling story, then rely on professional editing

It's not enough to be a great writer. If you don't write a story about captivating events or appealing characters, you've lost your reader within the first few pages. Even best-selling authors need a professional editor. A good editor can distance themselves from the story. They'll find those typos and errors that your eyes keep missing.

Know your stuff

Understand every nuance of the English language, from dangling modifiers, compound sentences, comma placement, narrative voice, and tense. Allow your reader to escape their world by entering yours through the images you've created, not the words on the page.

Read what the experts say

You need to understand the mechanics of self-publishing. What steps do you take? Which apps are best? How do you market your book if you're outside the United States? How do you distribute your hardcopies? And more importantly, keep up-to-date on your research. In this age of digital wizardry, what's good on Friday can often be obsolete by Monday morning.

3 tips for maintaining self-confidence during your writing journeyIf you're a published writer in any form, go back and read those articles, short stories or novels out loud – as if for the first time. Marvel at how enjoyable they are to read, how proud you feel. Say to yourself, “I wrote this. Wow.”If you receive a bad review, acknowledge that everyone is entitled to their opinions. Writers cannot please all readers. Diversity is a privilege. Better yet, if it's a one or a two-star review, DON'T READ IT. Your value as a writer is not determined by someone else. You are passionate about writing for a reason. The desire to write is inherent to your being. Why else would you be so compelled to write? By writing, you're fulfilling your life's dream.Tips for pacing a thriller

I can give you the best advice on pacing a thriller in two words: Alexandra Sokoloff.

Sokoloff, the acclaimed author, screenwriter, and story structure teacher takes movie-watching to a whole new level. By breaking down movies like Groundhog Day, The Great Gatsby, and Chinatown, to name a few, Sokoloff teaches us the fundamentals of the three-act eight sequences structure. If you want to challenge yourself and write the best possible novel you can, read Stealing Hollywood, and watch your writing transform into something exceptional.

I discovered Alexandra Sokoloff in the early millennium, and my writing improved ten-fold.

Thanks, Joylene, for a post full of great tips for writers.

Deciding When to Stop a Series

by Elizabeth S. Craig, @elizabethscraig

Writing in series can be rewarding for writers and fun for readers, too. For writers, there's often not quite as much set-up work involved because main, recurring characters have been developed (obviously, you'll need to continue development, but you should already have a good base to work from) and settings are established. For readers it's fun because they've invested time in learning the story world and the people who populate it and have the ability to see new stories set in that same world.

But eventually, there may be a time when you (or your readers) wonder if the series should continue. In the best possible scenario, it's you and not your reader wondering this.

I think about this a lot. The last thing I want is for the series quality to deteriorate. With 19 books in one series and 15 in another, it definitely makes sense for me to consider series quality with every book.

Here are some of the questions I ask myself:

Are the characters still growing without doing anything too far out of character?  You want your characters to stay consistent, but there still needs to be space for reasonable growth of some kind. If the characters are static, think of ways to shake things up a little.

Is anything about the series stale? This could be anything from the same settings to the same group of characters. Consider whether there are ways to introduce new spaces or even new characters (either sidekicks or conflict-generators) to your books.

How are my reviews? Although it's never fun to look at them, if you're writing as many books as I do, it's important to get a general feel of what readers are saying. The big thing I want to catch is if there are many readers saying that the series has slipped in quality.

How are my sales? How is reader engagement? Like reviews, these are other powerful indicators. Are sales still strong? Are readers still emailing you or contacting you on social media about them? Are they looking forward to upcoming releases?

How do I feel when it's time to start drafting a book in the series? Is it hard for me to come up with original ideas?  Is it fun anymore? Am I excited to visit the story world and its inhabitants? If I'm not, that's a bad sign.

Are my series tropes still working? Am I leaning on them too much? I wrote a post on series tropes here. They're the fun recurring rituals that readers of your series expect (maybe even just a running gag about a character's messiness, etc.) Are they becoming a crutch or do they still add some fun to the series?

And before anyone asks, I'm not stopping any of my series. :)  But I spend a lot more time on quality control than I used to.

What do you consider when looking at series length?

Quick Tip for Timeline Continuity

by Elizabeth S. Craig, @elizabethscraig

Keeping a timeline straight in a mystery can be a challenge. You have suspects giving alibis, victims being murdered, and other assorted chaos.

But timeline continuity is important for any writer. It's easy to start out a chapter saying it's Saturday and then twenty pages later, comment that the character, a banker, is at work the next day.

Careful reading during the editing process weeds this stuff out, but when you're also trying to look out for other errors, it can be tedious.

As far as tips go, this is a pretty simple one, but it's made a big difference for me. I go online and print out a blank calendar, like this one: https://www.wiki-calendar.com/blank-calendar.html . I like the ones that aren't specific to year. Then I just jot things down on it as I go: Jim died on Monday. His funeral is the following Monday (preventing Jim from being buried the next day despite being a murder victim, which I've written in a draft before).

The nice thing is that it helps eliminate continuity errors as you're working your way through the document.

If you're one of those writers who'd rather not stop and make notations as you write, this also helps keep your timeline straight after your first draft is finished. Just print it out and fill it in as you read through the document.

Do you have any tips you've come across to make your writing life easier?
