A Flirt from a Friend! [Guest post]

Tonight, we’ve got one of my great author friends, RM Bruce, sharing with us a little flirt between two of her characters! Adding a little sexy to some of these shorts! I’ve had the pleasure of acting as a critique partner with RM and I’m loving how her story is progressing. Angel is quite the character… She’d give Vanessa a run for her money any day. Without further ado… enjoy!

::in a deep, manly voice:: Some sexual content, viewer discretion is advised.

Be gentle, its my first time. Too clich? Probably, but still rings true. This is my first sharing of what Ive written. The first short look at a couple of my characters (other than random blurbs as social media shares). Oddly enough, Im sharing it here because I havent decided if I want to add these types of scenes into the piece itself. So, here we have my leading lady, DiAngela. A modern-day angel, who happens to be the only female angel in existence now or ever. Shes something new, something created and is finding her way through realms that dont know what to do with her. Jaded by a rough past and slightly less than angelic at all times, she has everything to prove and nothing to hold her back. In this scene shes with archangel Michael, having an intimate moment. Dont get too attached to him, Im not sure how long shell keep him around. Fickle that one is. Alrighty have fun. – RM Bruce

Whimper

by RM Bruce

I lie on my stomach, still wet from the shower, flipping through random websites on my phone while it’s charging. The air dries me while Im draped in my towel, Im sure Im leaving a big wet spot on the bed, but I dont do much sleeping, so it wont make any difference later. I glance over my shoulder as footsteps echo down the hall and smile at Michael as he enters our room. A towel hangs at his hips, his hair wet and mussed as if he shook off like a cat after a rainstorm. Its an oddly charming look on him. He seems to have taken just as much time to dry off as I did. Beads of water trickle down his chest from his shoulders, reflecting the dim light of the room.

He approaches the bed, grinning before he crawls across it to hover over me on all fours. The slow, deliberate movements cause his muscles to flex and wave beneath his skin. A smirk of boyish arrogance rattles me, making my heart double-tap against my chest. With his knee pressed against my inner thigh, he leans down and kisses my shoulder, sending a chill splintering from one shoulder to the other. Then he trails his hand down my back, fingertips tickling along my sensitive skin, before pulling me to my hands and knees beneath him. Heat radiates off his chest, warming my back as our bodies melt together. My eyelashes flutter as I rake my teeth across my lower lip, wetting it. His hand continues to graze over me, up around my neck, turning my chin back toward him. With eyes full of passion and knowing, his hand falls to rest on my lower stomach which pulls me back into him, before continuing the trail to my inner thigh. The smooth brush of him evokes a velvet moan I dont try to contain. I catch my lower lip again, rolling it between my teeth, thriving in the blissful dominance of him showing me what he wants.

Slowly, he leans his hips into mine, pressing me forward. My hands flatten to the headboard for support. Teasing his palm over my skin, my side, down my right arm. He catches my wrist, tenderly trapping it behind my back, then draws our towels away from our bodies. I move to brace myself but he catches my arm, tugging a bit firmer to let me know to leave it where it is. Gently restraining me, he rises to his knees behind me and grips my hips.

Then he begins. Slowly, so slowly at first I cant help the whimper that escapes before I hear myself whisper, Please. Please more. Please dont tease. Please. A low moan rumbles through his chest. As if its an approval of my plea, he moves a little faster, quenching the need in me while making it more intense in the same moment. Pulling my hips back to him, just once, he holds me tight against him. I cry out as the sensational pleasure rockets inside me, stirring desperation in my stomach. He pushes me away, nearly to the point of us no longer being connected. I squirm in place, my nerves on edge, teased into high alert, then told to wait. Please. I try to push back to him, craving him. My back dips as I work to pull my arm from his grasp with a whimper. Arching and writhing with little sense of pride, only the need to sate the yearning thats built. One hard thrust is all Im aching for and it never comes. Instead he moves leisurely, pulling me back to him gently and secures himself deep. My head spins as my free arm collapses. Supported on my elbow, I bury my face into the pillow Id been laying on and cry out in it for a moment as light tremors vibrate through me.

At first I mewl quietly into the pillow as he pushes me away and pulls hard, again and again. My voice rises until Im calling out. I look back at him through half-mast eyes that feel heavy. Again he leans over me and takes my chin before he closes his mouth on mine. The deep passion in his kiss not felt on my lips, but in my soul. Proving that he knows me completely and can always give me what I want. My chest burns with desire and my stomach clenches in need. Releasing my chin, he grips my hips and pulls me back hard, causing me to quiver beneath him. His hand glides from my hip and reaches around to flatten just beneath my belly button pulling me back to him faster. Still his hand moves lower and I arch into him, my hips rolling at his touch. He barely holds my arm in place behind my back but I dont want to move it, and the instant I consider the thought, he grips my wrist firmly as if to remind me not to. His hand stops just as his fingertip reaches to massage me, my hips buck in response. As the massage starts, another motion ends and shortly after he pulls me away from him.

No. I whimper, trying to catch my breath. Hes quick but gentle as he guides me to lie on my back and pulls my hands just above my head. I squirm beneath him, my hands clench and flex in the air as the realization of not being able to touch him sets every one of my nerves on edge. My hips roll, my chest arches, every inch of me begs to be touched. Im aflame, burning like a contained inferno waiting to be stoked and in need of oxygen. He presses my wrists into the bed and lowers himself over me, capturing my mouth urgently with his, drawing the breath from me. He lowers himself to kiss my neck, my shoulder, my collarbone, my ribs, my hip. He slides down further and pushes my legs up, wrapping his arms around to hold me in place. Then a final gentle kiss right above, before his tongue slides down. His eyes dart up to reach mine as his lips surround me. I squirm. One hand reaches down to tangle and twist in his hair, the other slams against the headboard as my body responds. He pulls me into his mouth, sucking and swirling. My world spins as I gasp for my next breath.

Heart

Throughout the Legacy Series, we hear bits and pieces about Caden’s father and their large pack out in California. Below is a brief look at one of the last conversations Caden had with his father. And also a little hint about his relationship with Xany…

Ps – A fan asked me if I answer my own email, post on my own Facebook, and write this blog. Um… Yep. Yes I do. I also answer all of my fan mail by hand. I got a cramp from all the letters I wrote last night! (I’m kidding… really.) But yep, it’s really me, Max, writing this. Unless otherwise indicated (like the previous story!).

Heart

by Max

“This is not how you govern a pack, Dad,” Caden’s voice echoed through his father’s living room. The fire in the stone hearth pressed an eerie glow outward onto the bear-skin rug.

“You’re telling me how to run a pack? My son who so readily denies his birthrite and plans to wander off on his own.” Pat jabbed his index finger into Caden’s torso.

“Yeah, I am. Breeders should be fostered, protected, given choices,” Caden raised his voice an octave though remained unmoving against his father’s gesture. “And don’t give me that ‘for the greater good’ crap. You sound like a villain from a comic book.”

“You’re my son, it’s your duty to seek rule of this pack. What have I spent the past three decades doing? Building up our numbers, our strength, our alliances and for what? For my son to turn his back on it?” Spittle burst from the lips of Caden’s father every time he said the word ‘son.’

“You might’ve done all those things, Dad, but the three-hundred and fifty people under your command are unhappy and hurting. And that’s what you don’t take ownership of.” Caden turned his back on his father, the ultimate display of dismissal.

“You’re my son!” Pat’s voice tangled with a growl that rattled the pristine windowed walls overlooking the vineyard. “You will do as I say!”

“You have another son! And if you haven’t forgotten, Dad, I’m done rising to your temper, and bowing to your commands. So is Mal. So is everyone. It’ll be your fault when someone else moves up and takes over. Even Mom disagrees with your handling of things. She won’t say it though because she’s afraid of pushing you further.” Save for raising his voice, Caden’s demeanor remained stoic and unwavering. His father paced with shoulders curled under the unfurled rage that threatened release.

“Nicodemus doesn’t carry the same dominance as you, Caden. You know he can’t handle the other dominants the way you can.” Pat calmed slightly, his posture relaxing after Caden mentioned his wife.

“Nick can handle more than you give him credit for. You lost me the day you forced that wolf to sleep with a woman just because you said so. That’s verging on rape, Dad– no, that is rape. Of a different kind. So what if he chose a man for his mate?” Caden moved away from the fireplace as something pulled at the center of his chest. Something hurt, ached. He glanced to his father to see if he shared the reaction. Caden watched as his father sat at the head of the kitchen table, his rightful place. Pat seemed unfazed.

The ache in Caden’s chest continued to burn, exploding into a dire warning. His father didn’t respond and Caden knew that there was only one bond his father couldn’t feel: the preliminary mate bond.

Without another word, Caden bolted from the house, running at full speed back to the bachelor house he shared with Mal on the far corner of his father’s property. He ran through the vineyard, ignoring the spindled vines that scratched at his skin. Caden found the front door unlocked and nearly slid into the mirror at the end of the hall.

He threw open the door to Mal’s room only to be met with the frightening image of Mal’s bare ass. Mal thrust heatedly on top of a woman who clearly seemed to be enjoying herself just as much as him.

“Something’s wrong,” Caden announced, unmoved by the image in front of him. “Xany’s in trouble.”

“She’s always in trouble.” Mal grunted and slowed his thrusting to a distracted grinding.

“Big trouble, the kind I can feel. Sorry, Rebecca,” Caden mumbled the last part.

“What now?” Mal growled but the woman seemed responsive enough for the both of them.

“S’okay, you better go, Mal,” panted Rebecca.

Mal continued to grumble as Caden stepped out of the room to allow them to finish. He paced the hallway focusing in on the urgent demand of the preliminary bond that Xany didn’t know he held.

“Where is she?” Caden asked Mal as soon as he exited the room, now partially clad in jeans.

“Last place I knew was Kentucky,” answered Mal, his expression still rather sour.

“Where? Describe something, hurry. Don’t you feel it?” Caden wanted nothing more than to shake some sense into his friend.

“I was feeling Rebecca a minute ago until you interrupted.” Mal rolled his shoulders. “Yeah. I feel something. It’s what I usually feel since she’s always in trouble.”

“Focus,” demanded Caden. “Forget it. We’re going there blind. Hold on.” Caden grabbed Mal by the shoulder and with a side-step toward the bedroom door, they disappeared.

Rejection

by Jules

Florida sucks! Its hot, muggy and there is never a winter. Oh, they say it gets cold but itdoesn’t. All the blue hairs have forgottenwhat cold feels like. There are old people everywhere. Out of a hundred grandparents, you might find one teenager and half of those are preppy stuck-ups. Mom thought she was being clever bringing us down here but hey, guess what, wolves are not indigenous to Florida! So now she has to drive twentymillion miles to find a perfect spot to run. Well its her own damn fault. She should have left us in Wyoming.

Walking in the front door, Xany took off her shoes, dumped her backpack on the sofa, and made her way in to the kitchen. She opened the fridge and grabbed a soda.

Hello, precious, the familiar voice froze her in place. Its been two years since she had heard it and hearing it now made her realize that the aching pain wasn’t buried as deep as she thought. Xany’s grip on the handle of the fridge tightened as the memories flooded through her…

But you feel it dont you? I mean Its not like Mal said right? A heaviness begins to weigh on Xany’s chest. Caden turns her around and cups her face so that she is looking at him.

Listen to me, its like you said. Right now you would be nothing but a Breeder. I dont want that for you. I want to change things but its going to take time. Pain crosses Xany’s face, all she can hear is Caden rejecting her.

But you feel it, right? Xany looks him square in the eyes. Caden shakes his head.

I dont feel what you feel. We were just out having some fun for the summer.

Fun? It was just fun to you? Xany chokes the words out as her heart shattered Fun? It meant nothing? How could he not feel the preliminary mate bond?

Yes, Caden said with a flat expression. Xany stiffens in his lap and pulls away from him. Her chest tightened making it harder to breathe.

I was some kind of pity party? Hey lets go out with Mals little sister since shes handy? It’s just another notch in my belt. Xany’s tears burn rivers down her cheeks.

You should go. Caden lifts Xany out of his lap. Her legs wobble as she stands, crushed by his dismissal. Her whole world crumbles around her.

Why? She stared down at Caden waiting, hoping he was going to deny all of this and actually take her away. The numbness began to set in when he did and said nothing…

What are you doing here? She stared into the fridge, gripping the handle tight, torn between the urge to go to him or to claw his eyes out.

We are heading out to my dads pack in Cali, his voice was the same as she remembered.

So youll be leaving in the morning? Xany turned to face him. Caden appearedthe same just bigger and older. She looked into his eyes hoping they might give a hint to what he was feeling. That maybe he finally realized that she was his mate and had come to claim her.

Next week. Caden sat at the breakfast nook staring back at her. Nothing there, just two lifeless orbs of brown. All the hard work of putting the past behind her was swept away with only a few simple words.

Why Caden? Why did you have to come? Xany turned not wanting Caden to see the emotions he was stirring up with his presence.

Because I wanted him to, Mal chimed as he stepped into the kitchen. She couldnt help but smile, it seemed like forever since she last saw her brother.

Mal! After she sat her soda on the counter, Xany threw her arms around Mal’s neck and hugged him tight. Whats this about going to Cali? Xany ignored Caden as she talked with her brother.

Cadens father wants him out there to help with the pack. Mal returned her hug. She had missed him so much.

Why did you bring him? Xany glanced over at Caden who hadnt budged one bit.

Actually he brought me. He grinned at her. She rolled her eyes.

You should have told me, Xany said in an exasperated huff.

Then it wouldnt have been a surprise. Mal chuckled. She snatched her soda from the counter.

Im going to my room. Xany walked off to her bedroom with Mal hot on her heels.

Xee, stop. He followed her into her room.

Im not doing anything. Xany spun around and put her hands on her hips.

He missed you. Mal arched a brow at Xany.

Yeah right. She scoffed at him.

Its true, Mal said but she shook her head at him. Deep down she wanted to believe him.

So he finally came to claim me? To take me with you guys? Xany looked at Mal with that little ember of hope gleaming in her eyes. He looked away. No. Xany shook her head. I didnt think so. The pain that ripped through her was just as intense now as it was the first time Caden had rejected her.

Just stay away from me. She plopped down on the bed.

Xee Mal sighed. She knew, he didn’t need to say it. She knew Caden hadn’t come for her. It was all wishful thinking on her part.

Please leave.

When Mal left, closing the door behind him, she curled up on her side. What did her brother know? He didnt have a mate, especially one that didnt want him. It was like having the most popular guy ask you out on a date for the prom but when your parents drop you off hes already there with another girl and you find out in front of the whole school that it was all just a joke. People kill themselves cause of stuff like that. Caden is lucky Im not some weak little thing, getting hurt only pisses me off.

So if he doesnt want me. There are plenty of others that do. Speaking of which. Xany rolled over and grabbed her cell phone, paging down for the number. She pressed the button and waited.

***

After an uncomfortable dinner and a soothing shower, Xany dressed in a denim mini skirt with a crop-top T-shirt. When she came out of her room to put on her shoes, Xany could hear Mal in the kitchen arguing with Mom and Dad. Caden was sitting on the sofa. Instead of sitting down to slip her high-tops on, she bent over knowing full well that Caden would be able to see that she wasnt wearing much under her skirt. No, it wasnt nice but damn it he had crushed her one too many times. Xany looked over her shoulder at Caden hoping to see him angry or at least hurt but no, nothing, not one ounce of emotion showed on his face. She was just about to turn around and tell him to say or do something when she heard a car horn. Xany yelled out that she would be back later and bolted out the door. She nearly made it to the car door before being snatched back around by Mal.

Get back in that house and put some clothes on! He was furious as hell.

No! Xany jerked her arm away and tried for the car door. Mal grabbed her again, spun her around and dragged her back to the house.

Either you get some decent clothes on or youre not leaving the house!

You lost the right to tell me what to do when you let them drag me down to this damn place! Xany braced her feet on the concrete driveway and wrenched her arm out of his grip. He went to grab her again.

Let it go. Caden stood in the front doorway. His voice firm but still unemotional. Mal looked at him, mad and confused, his hands clenched into fists at his sides as if fighting some uncontrollable force. Caden turned and disappeared back into the house. Xany jumped in the car before anything else could happen.

Lets get the hell out of here. That right there was all the proof she needed to know that Caden wanted nothing to do with her. If he had, it would have been him trying to stop her.

Updates! And Sacred Pre-Release Fun!

Afternoon, friends and fans!

Just dropping a quick note to remind everyone that today begins two weeks of events leading up to the release of Sacred: Legacy Series Book 3 on February 17th! Guest hosts will post some articles orcommentary on my blog, including someshort-stories written by me and some friends/fans! I’ve read all the stories so no worries such as “*gasp* is Max okay with this?!” Of course I am! You’ll notice different writing styles, themes, perspective, points of view, and voice. I’m not editing these stories, I want them organically bytheir authors. I suppose it’s our own little play on fan-fiction!

Some of you asked how many books I’ve planned for the series. The answer so far is five planned books. That doesn’t mean it will be only five. Book four is fully drafted and book five is in concepts. I’m hoping for a two book release year for the Legacy Series in 2015, but that’s a goal not a promise!

In other projects, this past month, a fan asked me to write a very specific short story because she liked the way I write certain characters. (I realize this is vague, no spoilers!) So, I obliged and after sharing it with several betas who seemed to enjoy it, this short is currently out for edits. It’s a 40 pager that will appear in ebook only most likely in early spring. It’s an experiment of sorts… And… *takes a deep breath* it’s NOT sci-fi/fantasy. *gasp* Realistic fiction. *gasp* I wrote… *gasp* realistic fiction. *faint*

Ha!

Anyhoot, keep an eye out for Goodreads giveaway links! They should be up soon! As well as some other goodies. Check back shortly… the first short will be up by 8pm EST!

Cheers,

Max

2015 and Beyond

Happy Sunday, friends and fans! A brief update from the world of Max. Beginning 2015, our monthly blogs will be replaced with short stories from the world of the Legacy Series and other creative pieces! Max found monthly updates boring. Of course, that doesn’t mean we’ll be without updates, it just means the rate of posts will change!

So!!

Sacred releases in a few weeks and to pave the way, we’ll have stories from some of the characters in the series! Xany will hijack the blog (oh boy, who’s idea was that?!) and we’ll hear some inside information about what’s going on behind the scenes.

One of Max’s goals for the year is to release 2 books in the legacy series for 2015. (what?! who’s idea was THAT?! are you all trying to kill me?) Since book 4 is almost done, (what? it is?) we’re well one our way toward meeting that goal (c’mon now, seriously?).

If there’s something particular you’re itching to hear about, post in the comments below, or on Max’s Facebook/Twitter and we’ll see what we can do!

Cheers!!

December 2014

And it’s the last month of the year. What the heck? This update will be quick.

I’m happy to reveal the new cover for Sacred! Another beautiful cover by Victoria Miller at Breathless Press! The freaky part about this book is that only my critique partner and editor have read it. No betas. Ahh!! I’ve got a few betas lined up to read it during the editing process, however. I hope they enjoy it. (Vanessa would like everyone to know that she approves of the cover. Gee, I wonder why?)

In the spirit of celebration, we’ve got two Goodreads Giveaways beginning on December 1st! Enter to win a signed copy of Glyph or Birthrite!

I hope the holiday season finds you all happy and healthy. I’m looking forward to all the projects I have lined up for the new year and sharing them with all of you!

Cheers!

Max

November 2014

november-4

Crap, it’s already November. I’ll make this update a quick one!

With the upcoming release of Sacred, I’m planning a bunch of fun activities leading up to the February release date! Pending all extraneous situations of course!  Some of the things I’ve planned include: blurb reveal, cover art reveal, short-stories from Shawnee’s world published on the blog, Xany’s take over of the blog (oh dear), giveaways for promotional material, media kits, and Goodreads giveaways.

Are you interested in learning how Xany and Caden met? Want to know more about Mal or Vanessa? Keep an eye on the blog for some awesome stories! I may even post a novella about how Shawnee’s younger life.

Current projects: Despite my grrrishness (no, I’m not always chipper!), I’ve decided to continue working on the Legacy Series. And… I’m 75% through writing book 4. I know, I know. I’m a little crazy it seems. I’m also working on getting my first poetry chapbook published (we’ll see about that). I’m a total noob when it comes to anything outside of fiction. I’m also considering writing the sequel to Witch Way. Fans have been asking questions about it, sometimes daily via various social media outlets. I’m working on it… the idea is there, time is what I need!

Well, that’s the update for now. Happy Thanksgiving to you all! Here’s my gratitude list for this year: my family, friends, Milo, creativity, authenticity, pencils, no blizzard on Halloween, a mild summer, health and happiness, motivation, books, art.

Cheers!

Max

A “Threatening” Experience

Yesterday marked my first ever “Triple Threat” panel at Cuppa Pulp Writer’s Space/CILK119! I had the pleasure of joining C.E. Grundler (No Wake Zone, Last Exit in New Jersey) and Richard Herr (Tales from the StarBoard Café) to discuss current trends in electronic publishing and the industry at large. We had a blast entertaining a rather full house of friends, fans, and other authors. Donna Miele was a most gracious host and facilitator! The Writer’s Space is the most amazing environment I’ve ever seen! Endless work spaces with everything a writer needs! I joked with Donna that I might move in and never leave (she doesn’t know it but I might just be serious…). I’m looking forward to being part of more events there in the future! One of the biggest things to come out of it was talking about my author platform and the social networking sites I tend to use and fancy (Instagram is my favorite, followed by Twitter. Facebook, my least favorite since the implantation of pay-for-views on business pages, don’t get me started!). Some future panels/workshops I’m considering include building a social networking platform, beginnings of genre fiction, and building plot and character. I feel more confident these days in my ability to deliver information and I’m looking forward to sharing whatever I can!

It was a great pleasure to meet C.E. and Richard as well as Phillip from The Science Fiction Association of Bergen County! Lots of awesome networking! Thank you all for coming out to celebrate our books and talk about the industry! I look forward to seeing you all again soon!

I’ve posted a few pictures of the event below!

Cheers,

Max

September 2014 and October Event

sept

Some fun updates underway for September! First, I’m happy to announce that book three in my Legacy Series is complete! Contracts are signed and the title is… Sacred! Due to printing schedules, the original release date set for late October is now pushed back to either late this year or early 2015. Either way, over the next few months, edits will commence, followed by cover art reveals, contests, prizes, giveaways, and book signings!

I’m happy to report that I will be appearing at Cuppa Pulp Booksellers on October 25, 2014 for an author event and book signing! In addition to the signing, I will sit on a panel to discuss some publishing world stuff (I’ll have more details soon, I swear!) and my journey in the industry. This event is geared toward my newest release, Witch Way (YA published under a pseudonym),  but copies of all Legacy Series books and promo gear will be available! In the spirit of my most favorite holiday, this event will be Halloween themed and kid-friendly! I’m very much looking forward to this! Is it too early to wish everyone a happy Halloween? *grin*

As part of the preparations for the release of Sacred and my autumn book signings, I will be hosting monthly giveaways on Goodreads! Please visit my website for the current active giveaway links: Max Ellendale

Well, that’s it from me, friends and fans. Looking forward to seeing you next month!

Cheers,

Max
