Hi Brittany!

I wrote Blue Hearts of Mars as a standalone story with no intention of writing a sequel. However, several fans have asked for one and I'm not opposed to it. I think the universe is compelling enough that I would love to explore the possibility, and I even wonder sometimes what happened to Retta and Hemingway after Blue Hearts ended. Right now I'm working on a sequel to my first novel, Feed. When that's done, I'll be able to devote more thought to what a Blue Hearts sequel would look like.

I HAVE written a couple short stories that are prequels to the events in Blue Hearts, but I've not released them yet. Not sure why, except that I haven't gotten around to it. They don't deal with characters in Blue Hearts itself, rather certain events mentioned in the story leading up to the timeline in Blue Hearts.

If there's something that you'd like to see specifically, let me know! I love to hear what fans were interested in and what they want to see more of.

Thanks for the question!

Keeping daily word count goals helps me to stay in practice and within the story world I'm creating. In general, I don't have time for writer's block, so I always write. Even if it's not my best work. That's what editing is for! (less)

When the Beta Is All Wrong

This past weekend, I took a little jaunt down to southern Utah to hike and rappel a slot canyon… ok, first, here’s a warning–this is super long… but you like to read, so, hey! Match made in heaven. 😉

So, I thought this would take 3-5 hours, because that’s what the beta said! Ha. Ha ha ha.

By the way, I should mention that reading this might take you 3-5 hours.

From 10am-6pm, we descended into this r

“It was like trying to think about what he’d be thinking if he never existed. He wouldn’t be thinking about what he was thinking. He just wouldn’t exist. It wouldn’t hurt.”

Nicole Grotepas, Blue Hearts of Mars

“I stared at him like he was being a total moron. Which he was. I'd never say that though.

"Dad, you're being a total moron."

Well, maybe I would.”

“Don't ever tell anybody anything. If you do, you start missing everybody.”

“If Henry Adams, whom you knew slightly, could make a theory of history by applying the second law of thermodynamics to human affairs, I ought to be entitled to base one on the angle of repose, and may yet. There is another physical law that teases me, too: the Doppler Effect. The sound of anything coming at you -- a train, say, or the future -- has a higher pitch than the sound of the same thing going away. If you have perfect pitch and a head for mathematics you can compute the speed of the object by the interval between its arriving and departing sounds. I have neither perfect pitch nor a head for mathematics, and anyway who wants to compute the speed of history? Like all falling bodies, it constantly accelerates. But I would like to hear your life as you heard it, coming at you, instead of hearing it as I do, a sober sound of expectations reduced, desires blunted, hopes deferred or abandoned, chances lost, defeats accepted, griefs borne. I don't find your life uninteresting, as Rodman does. I would like to hear it as it sounded while it was passing. Having no future of my own, why shouldn't I look forward to yours.”
Wallace Stegner

“How many times can summer turn to fall in one life?”
Charles Wright
