Nicole writes stories exploring various topics and themes that she can't stop thinking about. They usually involve concepts of surveillance and how it effects human behavior, colonization, AI, robots, and a bunch of other impossible but cool scenarios. She studied folklore in college and believes that the best parts of any story touch on these living, changing elements of culture. For example, food and drink. Expect to be hungry or thirsty after reading one of her books.

Hi Brittany!

I wrote Blue Hearts of Mars as a standalone story with no intention of writing a sequel. However, several fans have asked for one and I'm not opposed to it. I think the universe is compelling enough that I would love to explore the possibility, and I even wonder sometimes what happened to Retta and Hemingway after Blue Hearts ended. Right now I'm working on a sequel to my first novel, Feed. When that's done, I'll be able to devote more thought to what a Blue Hearts sequel would look like.

I HAVE written a couple short stories that are prequels to the events in Blue Hearts, but I've not released them yet. Not sure why, except that I haven't gotten around to it. They don't deal with characters in Blue Hearts itself, rather certain events mentioned in the story leading up to the timeline in Blue Hearts.

If there's something that you'd like to see specifically, let me know! I love to hear what fans were interested in and what they want to see more of.

Thanks for the question!

Keeping daily word count goals helps me to stay in practice and within the story world I'm creating. In general, I don't have time for writer's block, so I always write. Welcome to My Poetry Dictatorship

I’ve been writing poetry since I was eleven. I wasn’t very good then, and I’m still not very good.

BUT one of my favorite things is to read poetry. I’ve gone through so many phases, being in love with this poet or that poet.

I went through a Richard Brautigan phase, a Billy Collins phase, and I went through another phase where I read a poem a day and collected the names of contemporary poets and...

“If Henry Adams, whom you knew slightly, could make a theory of history by applying the second law of thermodynamics to human affairs, I ought to be entitled to base one on the angle of repose, and may yet. There is another physical law that teases me, too: the Doppler Effect. The sound of anything coming at you -- a train, say, or the future -- has a higher pitch than the sound of the same thing going away. If you have perfect pitch and a head for mathematics you can compute the speed of the object by the interval between its arriving and departing sounds. I have neither perfect pitch nor a head for mathematics, and anyway who wants to compute the speed of history? Like all falling bodies, it constantly accelerates. But I would like to hear your life as you heard it, coming at you, instead of hearing it as I do, a sober sound of expectations reduced, desires blunted, hopes deferred or abandoned, chances lost, defeats accepted, griefs borne. I don't find your life uninteresting, as Rodman does. I would like to hear it as it sounded while it was passing. Having no future of my own, why shouldn't I look forward to yours.”
Wallace Stegner
