All People's Lives Matter, a novel
excerpt from all people's lives matter
A dark cloud hung over me like shingles, the whole All People’s Lives Matter movement was not the giant I had hoped for, but in truth, a dwarf; it proved not to kindle a flame that would burn the decaying institutions and ancient wrongs in the fierce crucible of a world’s awakening wrath. I pondered if I should commit my time and energy to talking to people about the giants of the past whose ideas and actions had elevated minds and souls, and led to more freedoms and liberties, instead of blocking street. In a real sense the experience fundamentally rearranged the furniture in my head, so that the ghost of my family’s legacy of activism was continued but approached from a different angle. Moreover, the great scourge of police brutality cannot be solved by blocking streets. No doubt their cause was just, their motives pure, their goals noble and practical; but perhaps I felt they were too far removed from power to inspire any real change in police procedure. Simply blocking streets and unnecessarily disrupting the lives of ordinary people would spell death to aspiration of the movement.

excerpt from All People's Lives Matter
“All I know is that I had new furniture. It was nice too. I did not have to take my clothes to the laundromat in the middle of winter. I was glad to give then my hard-earned dollars for that convenience.”
“But Mona they ripped you off! You could have saved the money and paid a fraction of the cost for that stuff.”
“Yeah, that’s true but I couldn’t have save when my foot hurts me too bad to take the bus to the laundromat, I would rather pay them folks $60 a week for a washer and dryer than drag my clothes on the bus in the middle of January.”
“The whole damn system is rigged,” mom said rising and shaking her head in disgust.
“I look at it like this way,” Mona said, trying to do something with her hair, “the rich people of the world might tell you folks to save up your money and buy a house instead of getting an expensive mortgage from the bank. Rich people can talk like that, so how is it any different that you tell me tell to save my money and not go to Rent-to-Own. My choices are limited. Just like yours are limited when it comes to buying a house, my choices are limited when it comes to buying a washer and dryer.”
Mona laced her defense of Rent-to-Own with roots of skepticism; moreover, the better off imposing their ideas and values on the less fortunate. Her argument was unsophisticated. Rather it was simple, and typical of the dilemma facing the less fortunate. Life was essentially bad, with happiness just beyond reach. Further, not only are the poor doomed to their fate, but also there is little anyone can do about it. Offsetting this pessimism was the ability to get cheap liquor, drugs, payday loans and payday furniture. When Mona talked, it was about cheap furniture, hair weave, wigs, clothes and sports. Sports was no mere passing amusement. It was in fact a living embodiment of Nature’s wrath. The joys of watching sports matches were “balanced” by the inscrutable fact that at some point even the best players regretfully must quit. Also, sports, basketball in particular for poor African American boys, maintain the metaphor for life because it is a game of chance and luck. In other words, it is a game in which a wiry, tall, skinny kid from the slums can excel by chance.
I’ve imposed myself long enough,” Mona chimed. “I have to get going to get the next bus.” She stood up and bid us good night.

All People's Lives Matter, a novel
Amazon review of ‘All People’s Lives Matter’, by Billy McCoy
https://www.amazon.com/Peoples-Lives-...
At first I was confused because I didn't know what to expect. This is a collection of short stories that don't intermingle, yet they have the same high level meaning.
These stories are about people from all walks of life and the daily struggles they have within. You can easily relate to some of the issues and decisions that the readers encounter. I enjoy stories that you can tie back to your personal life.
My favorite of the 4 stories was the first one with Holly. She is a well detailed character who is struggling both in her professional and personal life.
I also enjoyed that these are more of a dark story imitating real life. It isn't all roses and happy endings at the end of the stories.

All People's Lives Matter
Four star rating out of possible five.
ALL PEOPLE'S LIVES MATTER, a novel.
A charming set of character driven stories, worth a second look!
ByEskon September 12, 2016
Format: Paperback
All people's lives matter is a beautiful collection of short stories surrounding the themes of rises and more frequently falls of a number of different and disperate people. McCoy expertly constructs characters who are complex enough to be relatable and reviled within the same sentence. Worth reading again and again for every new angle discovered. I found myself slowing my reading pace as to take in every word.
