What we learn from John Podesta’s emails

The emails regarding Hillary Clinton being released by Wikileaks are not from her illegal secret server that she used as Secretary of State.  Rather, they are hacks of the emails of John Podesta, her campaign chairman and longtime henchman. In them, Podesta and scores of campaign operatives and other correspondents discuss things like the inner workings [Read More...]

How much money do people in different churches make?

This is an unspiritual topic that is none of our business and appeals only to our morbid curiosity.  The Pew Research Center has released findings about the income levels in different religious groups.  (Not just churches but religions and no-religions.) It’s notable, for one thing, in including the Lutheran Church Missouri-Synod separately, unlike most polls [Read More...]

Ben Sasse is a “Lutero-Calvinist”

Nebraska Senator and rising conservative star Ben Sasse describes himself as a “Lutero-Calvinist.”  Though he grew up and came to faith in the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod and says he is “in love with the Lutheran tradition,” he is now a member of a Presbyterian Church in America (PCA) congregation.  He talks about his faith and [Read More...]

Judge sees “absolutely no value” in studying the Constitution

Richard Posner is a judge for the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 7th Circuit and a professor at the University of Chicago Law School.  In an op-ed for Slate, he said that he sees “absolutely no value” in judges devoting even seconds to studying the Constitution.  Even the Bill of Rights does “not speak to us today.” Here [Read More...]

To evacuate, or not to evacuate

Coastal areas in Florida and other Southeastern states evacuated their populations to escape Hurricane Matthew.  But when it hit, it sort of fizzled out.  While the hurricane took over 500 lives (maybe as many as a thousand), particularly in Haiti, it didn’t do that much to the United States.  So now lots of people who [Read More...]

Wayne Grudem takes back his endorsement of Trump

Wayne Grudem is a prominent and influential evangelical theologian.  As we blogged about, he surprised quite a few people when he endorsed Donald Trump.  But now, in light of that tape of Trump’s sex talk and of the things he said as a regular guest on the Howard Stern show (including sexual talk about his own [Read More...]

Planned Parenthood’s political army

Planned Parenthood has launched a massive political initiative designed to elect politicans who are pro-abortion, will support its abortion business, and will preserve its half a billion dollars in taxpayer funding.  Plans include a super PAC, 800 paid staffers (more than Hillary Clinton has), and 3,500 paid volunteers who will be knocking on doors. Students for Life [Read More...]

Hezekiah’s toilet

Archaeologists have excavated a site identified with the rule of Hezekiah.  It includes a shrine with horned altars with the horns knocked off.  Also in the shrine:  a stone latrine.  Scientists have determined that it had never been used, so it was apparently put in just to desecrate the shrine. This would seem to be [Read More...]

InterVarsity gets tough on sex issues

InterVarsity Christian Fellowship has long been one of the best evangelical campus ministries, cultivating the Christian faith along with the life of the mind.  I had heard that it was slipping to the liberal side, but the organization has told its 1,300 staffers that they must support its statement on sexuality (that sex is only [Read More...]

“You need both a public and a private position”

Some of Hillary Clinton’s hacked e-mails released by Wikileaks include transcripts of paid speeches she gave to big corporations.  What she says in those confidential closed-door speeches–for example, calling for open borders and more free trade, saying the banks aren’t really responsible for the 2009 financial collapse–is often at odds with what she says in her presidential [Read More...]
