Conference on Christ, Culture, and the Two Kingdoms

I’ll be speaking at the 2016 Just and Sinner Conference this Thursday through Saturday.  The conference topic will be “Christ, Culture, and the Two Kingdoms.”  I’ll be joining my friend Eric Phillips and fellow Patheos blogger Jordan Cooper (who is organizing the conference at the congregation he pastors). We’ll be unlocking a concept that I think [Read More...]

Which kind of conservatism?

Matthew Continetti has written an essay that is sure to get attention, as the Republican party tries to put itself back together.  Entitled “Crisis of the Conservative Intellectual,” the piece traces the longtime conflict between “conservatism” (that is, the classic version that seeks to preserve institutions and that opposes modernity’s love of change) and “populism” (which [Read More...]

How Hillary treats her underlings (including those who protect her)

You can tell a lot about a man, according to an old saying, by the way he treats his servants.  Hillary Clinton has the reputation of often being vicious to those who serve her.  And she is often downright abusive to the officers who have sworn to give their lives to protect hers. So says Deroy Murdock [Read More...]

The “throw away your vote” fallacy

If you vote for a third party or an independent candidate, some say, you are throwing away your vote. So your vote has meaning only if you vote for someone who could win?  That makes no sense to me. Why should our choices be limited to the nominees of the two major parties?  If we must vote for [Read More...]

The Lutheran pre-school before the Supreme Court

Once again, a congregation of the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod is appearing before the Supreme Court in a religious liberty case.  First there was Hosanna-Tabor Lutheran Church successfully arguing that it should be able to define who its ministers are, without being subject to discrimination complaints.  Now, as we blogged about. Trinity Lutheran Church of [Read More...]

The “Hillary as Obama’s third term” fallacy

I keep hearing that if Hillary Clinton is elected, it would be the equivalent of Barack Obama’s third term. But Clinton and Obama are extremely different.  President Obama is weak and ineffective.  My fear is that a President Hillary Clinton would be strong and effective.  I would much rather have a weak president who has trouble [Read More...]

Assange blocked from internet, so supporters bring down US sites

Wikileaks has been releasing hacked e-mails embarrassing to Hillary Clinton, so–surprise!–the head of that enterprise, Julian Assange, holed up in the Ecuadoran Embassy in London, has had his access to the internet cut off. In retaliation, his supporters are hacking into major American service providers, bringing down major sites, such as Amazon, Twitter, PayPal, Reddit, [Read More...]

The teams with longest championship drought made the World Series

The two teams that have gone the longest without winning a championship are in the World Series this year.  The Chicago Cubs last won it all in 1908. The Cleveland Indians won it in 1948. That these two teams have conquered their respective leagues should be encouraging news for all other losers. I’m pulling for [Read More...]

Restoring society by going to Church

In the course of a review of R. R. Reno’s Resurrecting the Idea of a Christian Society, Texas A&M professor James R. Rogers (an LCMS Lutheran) observes that most people on every side assume that going to church is a private activity.  Christians are urged to go outside the walls of their churches to change society. But [Read More...]

The “Bill Clinton is worse” fallacy

Donald Trump responds to videos and testimonies about his treatment of women by saying, “But Bill Clinton is worse!”  He brings together some of Bill’s victims for a press conference and invites them to the debates.  But I don’t see how Bill’s sexual transgressions and his being a sexual predator can be used to discredit [Read More...]
