1K a Day Motivational – “But I’m Settling Back In”

Thirty second in the Motivational series, and tied directly to the previous week’s “But I’m on Vacation”.

My vacation ended a couple days ago, and the last day of my vacation turned out to be lots of travel and an attempt to return to the normal routines of life. Only problem is, normal routines had fallen by the wayside. What’s a sleep schedule? What’s work? Why do I need to do that? Laundry? Chores?

Fuck all that.

Only you can’t. You can get away with a little bit of ignoring the demands of...

_____

The Shape of Family Part Three – Wild

by Rick Cook Jr

The thing that was not a bandersnatch followed at a safe distance. He knew her by the scent of blood. Scent was curious; he did not always possess it, and wished never to need it, so abhorrent was it to him.

He should take her now. If it wasn’t for that thing under the girl…

What is it? he wondered....

1K a Day Motivational – “But I’m On Vacation”

It’s Wednesday, which means it’s time for another of those fun Motivationals where I try to work out one of a thousand things that is distracting me from the writing process.

This week I’m on vacation, away from home, out of state, visiting family and doing fun things! But I’m also still writing, still editing, still trying to do crits for people.

I’ve touched on this before a bit in my post “But It’s a Holiday”and I’d like to just expand on that now that I’m actually on a vacation where I’m...

_____

The Shape of Family

Part Two – Wings

by Rick Cook Jr

Wing Captain Claire Claymonte wanted to stay and search for the rider of this beautiful horse. It rankled that they were not able to sneak up and catch him unawares. But if the Forest didn’t kill him, a patrol probably would.

She sighed as they mounted up and Sergeant Combs continued to work his skill at calming on the animal. Dark blue and gray patch...

1K a Day Motivational – “It Inspires Me” July

It’s the last week of July and that means I get to write a review and pretend it’s part of my weekly series!

I was gonna talk about Sense8, the wonderful new show on Netflix, but I talked about a Netflix show last month, so we’re going into read’em material again instead.

So over the last couple months I’ve been reading this fantasy series, two books, by Karen Miller, the Kingmaker, Kingbreaker Saga. The books are called The Innocent Mage andThe Awakened Mage. I finished Awakened Mage towards...

The Shape of Family

Part One by Rick Cook Jr

From Sind’s Sundry at the edge of town, Sadie bought the star map and a singed pamphlet with the last of her silver and struck out for the skinyard, fingers twitching to be gone. Sind hisself hadn’t said a word. No one had. They all knew she was going, that she couldn’t be stopped.

She...

Why I Write – A Response

A departure from the regular schedule of two posts a week related to my 1K Challenge, I bring you a fast and dirty essay in response to a prompt from Chuck Wendig over on his blog.

Why do I write?

It’s not a question I think about often, but I do get asked it on occasion. I’ve written about reasons why I write in the past and I have no intention of dredging them up again.

I could give you all the canned answers, and they’d all be true. I write for many reasons.

The one I will focus on, that I...
