Christopher L. Bennett is a lifelong resident of Cincinnati, Ohio, with a B.S. in Physics and a B.A. in History from the University of Cincinnati. A fan of science and science fiction since age five, he has spent the past two decades selling original short fiction to magazines such as Analog Science Fiction and Fact (home of his "Hub" series of comedy adventures), BuzzyMag, and Galaxy's Edge. Since 2003, he has been one of Pocket Books' most prolific and popular authors of Star Trek tie-in fiction, including the epic Next Generation prequel The Buried Age, the Star Trek: Department of Temporal Investigations series, and the Star Trek: Enterprise -- Rise of the Federation series. He has also written two Marvel Comics novels, X-Men: Watchers ...more

Submit stories more diligently and don't give up on them. Trust what editors tell you. Try harder to get an agent. Diversify; don't get too dependent on a single source of steady work.

There's also the advice I got from Robert Hewitt Wolfe the one time I pitched to STAR TREK: DEEP SPACE NINE, which he was probably passing on from Michael Piller: Always work from the perspective of character. Don't just focus on plot and cool ideas; ask what a story means to the characters, how it changes them or reveals them. That's probably the best single piece of advice I ever got.

Beyond that, I'm not sure how much good advice I'd have to offer my younger self, since there's a lot I still haven't quite figured out or that I'm struggling to do better at.(less)

Reassessing ARACHNE’S LEGACY

Over the past month, I’ve been tooling along pretty well writing Arachne’s Legacy, the third book in my Arachne series — or so I thought. I’ve been focusing on just one of the book’s two parallel plotlines, since I often find it easier to write the A and B plots separately so I don’t have to keep shifting my mindset between them. As of early last week, I was getting close to the climax of this fir

I was never that impressed by Black Canary before, not having seen much of her in the comics, but this collection changed my mind. I can see why she was a breakout character in the '40s. She's strong and capable, able to outfight men, escape deathtra ...more
