O Captain! My Captain! Pinterest Storyboard Reveal

One of the most entertaining things about Pinterest, to me, is checking out storyboards other author`s make for their novels.

I just love seeing who they picture as their leading lady, which handsome actor or model they envision as their leading men, seeing the secondary characters, places, things, and pets that make each novel unique. I can spend hours over there, and have to limit myself closely or I fiddle away my writing time gaping at pins!

Today, over on Pinterest, you`ll be able to check out my storyboard for O Captain! My Captain!, the third Wildcat novel set for a tentative July 7th release.

Feel free to follow me over there if you wish. I love meeting new friends, and generally will re-follow interesting boards. I hope you enjoy my vision of Maggie, Derrick, and the characters you`ll meet in the next To Love a Wildcat book.

Greek Week Q & A - Day Five

Wow, the final day of Greek Week is here already. It was a great five days! I`d like to thank Cathy Hird for contacting me about this wonderful idea. I hope we can do it again someday, and hopefully we`ve managed to make a few of you curious about the Greek gods and goddesses. If we can bring one new fan into the realm of Greek mythology then I am a happy woman. Thank you all for stopping by and commenting!

Our final topic:

We often focus on the gods; who is your favorite hero or heroine?
V. L. Locey: So many choices. While I enjoy reading about Heracles and Theseus, I have to say my favorite heroine from classic legends is Atalanta. Sure, the guys killed lots of monsters, and you know, we`re all thankful for that, but the tales of Atalanta were particularly inspiring to me as a young girl reading those timeless stories. A virgin huntress, favored by Artemis, who was suckled as child by a she-bear? That is pretty awesome stuff right there!
If I had to choose from my own works, it would be Libby Simons, the heroine of my Gods & Goats trilogy. Libby is a mortal woman who finds Ares lying in her goat barn one day after a violent thunderstorm. From that moment on, her pastoral life in the mountains of Pennsylvania raising dairy goats is never the same. She is tossed into a battle with Hades and his minions with the fate of the Greek pantheon, as well as the world, up for grabs. Libby proves to be one hell of a warrior, friend, heroine, and lover for a certain battle god. What? You thought I would choose some other god as my leading man? I adore Libby, her strength, her character, her loyalty, and her spunk.

Cathy: I mentioned Ariadne the other day. I love the way she defies her father, saves the Athenians and frees her own people from the threat of the minotaur. She is smart and courageous, even though ill fated. Some tales say that Athena prevented her from leaving with Theseus; others say that Dionysius stole her away from the hero; all agree that she did not get back to Athens with him.

One of the sets of stories that fascinate me are set in Delphi. There women priestesses are touched by Apollo to speak hints about the future. These hints often get misinterpreted by the kings who are so jealous of their position, but that is not the priestesses’ fault. It is also interesting that during the winter months the care of this shrine passed from Apollo to Dionysius, which reminds us westerners who like the Greeks rely on intellect to solve everything that emotion has its place. Someday I’ll tell a story set in Delphi with a dryad who watches over the pool where pilgrims wash before approaching the shrine…..There is a ton of material in the Greek stories, enough for a lifetime of inspiration!

Greek Week Q & A - Day Four

Holy Hera, this week is going fast! Onto the fourth Greek mythology topic.

These stories are retold on TV and movies today; which do you like? dislike?
V. L. Locey: I`ll admit that I am a huge fan of the Percy Jackson novels. Not only because it deals with my favorite gods and goddesses, but because Mr. Riordan has made Ares, Poseidon, Zeus, Athena, and all the rest cool again! He made mythology fun for kids. And those kids who fall in love with the legends, as I did as a child, will grow up and spread that love to others.
There are a slew of movies out, some good and some not so good. I enjoyed both Percy Jackson films although many didn`t. I also really liked the remake of Clash of the Titans, although for me, Harry Hamlin will always be Perseus on the silver screen. Again, the way Ares is cast in some of these films makes me twitch, but, at least he was getting some face time. I try not to be a nitpicker when the films deviate from the books or the classic legends. Sometimes it`s not easy, but if a movie can spark an interest in the Greek gods for someone, then all is good.
Cathy: Mostly I agree with you that anything that introduces these stories is great. Except right now we have this TV show Atlantis about Jason. I mean really? Slipped in from another dimension? Conflating Theseus and Pythagoras and who knows what else? I think this version is going to confuse everybody. And that Hercules is an insult to the hero, in my opinion.
I loved the HerculesTV show a few years ago, and Xena at the same time gave some exposure for the Amazons that was way overdue.
I too like what Rick Riordan did with the Percy Jackson story, and what he is doing in Egypt now. The idea that the gods and goddesses did not die is cool. The movies did the centaur Cheiron, a favorite character of mine, much better than the Hercules series. Kids really have gotten excited about the Greek pantheon thanks to him. I love listening to how many of the stories they’ve picked up.

Greek Week Q & A - Day Three

Time for today`s question about the Greek pantheon. I hope everyone is enjoying this week long event!

Who do you hate, or at least dislike, but keep seeking out anyway?

V. L. Locey: Probably Hades. I think that`s because I chose him as the villain in my Gods & Goats trilogy and I can`t seem to shake the taint of his evil ways in those books. Also, I`m not real fond of how he treated Persephone.
Cathy: I do agree, though he ended up playing an important role in my first novel. In that story, the hero travels right to the edge of his kingdom. I also like the story of Orpheus and Eurydice where Hades does free the beloved woman, and it is the supposedly wise musician who plays the fool and loses her for good. Which does lead us to another question: neither of us heart the original poets tell these tales; how do you dig into these stories? And as an aside, have you heard it said that there were as many versions of the tales as there were poets who told them?
V. L. Locey: Ah, research. There are times that I find it a bother. I recently wrote a historical western, and digging up facts about old railroads and such was not exciting. However, you plunk me down to write something about the Greek pantheon and I`m all over that research! I suppose it helps to have a love affair with the topic that you`re working on. When I sit down to dig into something about the Greek pantheon, it`s no longer dry, boring research. It`s another exciting adventure with Perseus or Odysseus. I`m off to Thrace with Ares or waging war beside Achilles. I have an old, battered copy of Mythology: Timeless Tales of Gods and Heroes by Edith Hamilton that is my bible when I`m working with the Greek gods and goddesses. If I can`t find something in Ms. Hamilton`s book I`ll hit the internet, but nine times out of ten, Edith has it covered.
Cathy: Richard Martin’s Myths of the Ancient Greeks sits on the table beside where I write. I have also gone to the writings of the classical era in Greece. Pindar, Hesiod and Homer have helped me keep an authentic texture to my writing. Homer often calls Poseidon “Earth shaker” and that became an important clue for my first novel. And of course I had to see the landscape I described. Travelling to Greece was the best research; I found an absolutely magical setting for Moon of the Goddess.

Greek Week Q & A - Day Two

We`re back and ready to carry on with our Greek Week Q & A. Here`s the question for today:

Today we ask what is your favorite story from the Greek legends?
V. L. Locey: There are a few. I always enjoyed reading about Heracles and his labors. I`m rather fond of the stories told about Atalanta. There aren`t many Greek myths that feature women beating men quite so handily and intelligently. Also, the story of Orion, Artemis, and Apollo. That one may be my favorite. I enjoyed it so much that I retold it in Love of the Hunter, in which I spun things around to have Orion and Apollo being the ill-fated lovers, and Artemis the jealous sibling. That book may be one of the novels that I am most proud of.
Cathy: I liked that you gave Artemis a role in that story.
I love the story of Ariadne—we often refer to it as Theseus and the minotaur, but it is Ariadne, daughter of the king of Crete, who feels compassion on the Athenians and sees that Theseus has a chance to defeat the beast. She is the one who comes up with a plan and implements it. The hero just wields the sword.

Tuesday Tales - Picture Prompt

Hello! It`s time for Tuesday Tales again. This week I`ll be sharing excerpts from my 2013 NaNoWriMo novel, Laco Law – The Gnarled Oak. Laco Lawis an M/M historical western romance, set in the fictional county of Laco, Texas in 1867.
We have a picture prompt this week so the excerpt is written to reflect the image and must be three hundred words or under. Today`s excerpt is the beginning of the last chapter, and we`ll catch up with how things have turned out more fully next week.
A note for my readers:  This is a gay romance novel, and so the romance that occurs is man on man. If this is not your cup of tea, no one will think less of you if you read no further.
As this is my NaNo work, it is quite rough. I do ask that you overlook any glaring mistakes you may find. Please do check out the other wonderful writers after you`re done reading by clicking on the Tuesday Tales link at the bottom. Thanks for stopping in!

The heat inside the jailhouse was beyond what a human should endure. My deputy and I had moved from the stifling brick building to lounge outside on a wooden bench that had been graciously donated by Price Railways. A Texas storm loomed on the horizon, cooling us with its gusty winds. Zeke lit a cheroot, waved it under my nose, then chuckled darkly at my sour face. In the month that had passed since our return from San Antonio, my deputy had become well acquainted with my likes and dislikes. He also knew well how to hold me in the night when I woke screaming, my soldier`s heart galloping inside my chest. Life had taken on a rather pleasant demeanor, aside from my night and sometimes day terrors.
Peony Rose was thrilled to have three men living with her. We all had new shirts. Boyden spent his days with the elderly old Indian woman, learning how to sew, cook, skin the game that Zeke and I hunted, and curse in Tonkawa. According to Ezekiel, Boyden`s cussing skills were nearly as good as his. I generally did not find that to be amusing but when I could not be there with the boy, Peony Rose showered affection on him, and that is what he needs. His mother`s death weighs heavily on him at times. I fear he has my penchant for self-recrimination and loathing. I pray not. Surely, if not for Ezekiel Fire Sky, I would have died a hundred times by now. Not all those deaths brought about by others, either.

Greek Week Q & A - Day One

I am so excited to be taking part in this wonderful week long Q & A about the Greek pantheon. As you all know I love Greek mythology, and have been blessed by the gods to have penned three books so far dealing with those who dwell upon Olympus. A fourth is coming this fall, Hera willing.

Today kicks off a week long event that I`m tickled to be sharing with the lovely Cathy Hird, another author who has a deep affection for all things Greek. Every day we`ll be chatting briefly about various topics pertaining to Greek mythology. For those of you who love the Greek gods, this should be a wonderful way to not only get a peek into the minds of two mythological authors, but also to dive into the conversation as well! Cathy and I would love to hear your thoughts.

Today we`ll have the first question, tomorrow we`ll be skipping as I have a weekly appointment with my Tuesday Tales family. Wednesday we`ll return with another topic, then we`ll run like Hermes through five total questions, ending on Saturday. Someone find Dionysus and we`ll get this party started. Here is question number one:

When the name "Poseidon" is mentioned, kids jump into the conversation. What name from among the Greek gods/goddesses gets your attention?

V. L. Locey: Ares. I am not sure why the god of war appeals to me as he does. Throughout the Greek legends he is portrayed as a less than admirable god, prone to bloodlust and following his baser desires. Just ask his brother Hephaestus about Ares and his desires, right Aphrodite? And yet, he is the god that appeals to me the most. I like to think it`s because he is always treated so poorly by his kin. I know deep down that Ares has some good in him, just look at how much he loves his children. And when he does give his heart to a woman it`s for keeps. Sure, he may have some slight jealousy issues. Okay, gutting Adonis while in the form of a massive wild boar may be a step above a slight issue, but that does not lessen the lure of the god of manly courage for me. Yep, Ares is my top god, war-torn hands down.
Cathy: Remind me not to get into a fight with you if you’re going to call on Ares to help!
Artemis is the one I am drawn too. Partly she has a broader character than some: she’s taken a vow to be a virgin but still acts as a mid-wife. I like that she does not impose her choice on other women. It is said that her temples centered around a pool of still water, and water always nourishes my spirit. Artemis never walked away from a fight for a just cause: when two giant sons of Poseidon are attacking goddesses, she leads them to their death to protect others—in that story, Hera just slipped away and left the giants to continue their rampage. Artemis will help out in the sequel to Moon of the Goddess. Her skills help out in the hunt for a creature that Poseidon let loose in the waters around Corfu.

O Captain! My Captain! Cover Reveal

There is nothing as exciting as revealing a new book cover, except reading a new book, of course!

I`m thrilled to once again have the extraordinary Dawne Dominique`s touch on this third Wildcat book. The tone is perfection, capturing the sexuality, realism, and fun of the books. And yes, we do have an older bearded man on the cover, and isn`t he all sorts of Derrick Andersson sexy? And our heroine is just lovely, with a hint of hidden sensuality, just like Maggie in the book.

If you`re looking for a twenty-something couple, or a Fabio type paired with a Kardashian sort of gal, O Captain! My Captain! isn`t for you. But, if you`re looking for a couple in their forties who are dealing with the sometimes brutal ups-and-downs of life while falling in love, then you`ll want to pick up a copy of the third To Love a Wildcat novel.

Tentative release date is July 7th  exclusively from Secret Cravings Publishing. Thank you so much for dropping by! How about a small snippet from Derrick and Maggie`s story?

*~*

            "I should probably go."
I straightened then looked at Derrick taking up all the space in Trevor`s small bedroom. I suspected the man took up all the space in any room he occupied. I reached up to smooth down my windblown hair.
"Let me show you out," I said softly. We left Trevor to sleep the worst of his overindulgence off. Down we went. The squeaky fourth step groaned at the weight of the Wildcats captain yet again. I followed Derrick through my messy living room. The boys had spent some time down here before they left to get soused. Where they got the booze would be discussed. I know they did not get it here. I don`t keep liquor in my house just for that reason. Not that I didn`t trust my son`s friends, but…
Derrick stopped in front of the door, effectively barring me from opening it for him. I looked up. His emerald eyes showed signs of fatigue, but they still held great warmth. He opened his arms. I stepped into them without a second thought. How glorious it was to be held in strong arms! His lips burrowed into my hair. A tender kiss was placed to my scalp. I clung to him.
"I need to tell you just how bad I feel about yelling at your son," Derrick whispered into my tresses. I shook my head then snuggled deeper into the bear hug. "No, I do," he continued. I breathed in his scent. It made me lightheaded with pleasure. "That was out of line. You already told me it was none of my business, and then I get right up into his grille."
I snorted into his big, burly chest. "Into his grille? Aren`t you a little old to be using that terminology?"
"Oh, well, yah, probably, but Lessard says it all the time," the man confessed, his hands splayed across my back to keep me in place. He didn`t have to worry. I would stand here in his arms forever. I had it bad."Anyways, you were right to get mad. It`s not for me to say how you raise your son. It`s just, when he used all that bad language in front of you, it made me angry. I kid you not, if I got caught saying 'Poop' out loud my ma would have scoured my mouth with soap."
"Mine too." I sighed. I really did miss my parents. My dad had passed from a heart attack when I was a junior in high school. My mother had died three years ago from complications after a bypass. With my genetics I was lucky my coronary hadn`t already happened. "Thank you for all your help tonight. Most men would have had their fun then told me to go home to take care of my rotten kid."
"Yah well, I ain`t most men. I want to see you again, Maggie. Honest to gosh, I truly do. You make me feel like I haven`t felt since I was a young goober in my first collegiate season. You think you could go out with a beat-up old Viking like me?"
"I think so," I said then rose to my toes to meet him halfway down. His kiss was passionate yet gentle. I hated to see it end but when we both yawned in each other faces, the snickers overtook the lust. "Damn, it sucks to grow old."
"Yah, an all- nighter for me now means I don`t got to get up to pee in the middle of the night." He chuckled. I laughed as well. This man was far too good for the life I lived. I ran my fingers over his wide shoulders then slipped out of his embrace.
"Be careful on the drive back to Philly," I said as I opened the door. The neighborhood was coming awake fully now. My neighbors would be wondering who the ginormous truck belonged to. Imagine their surprise when they saw Derrick gimping to the Silverado proud as you please. "Make sure you get some sleep before you get behind the wheel."

"You can worry about a lot of things, but you don`t got to worry about me, Maggie," he said with a twinkle in his eye. He grabbed one last kiss then ambled across the yard. I closed the door after he gave me a goodbye honk. Guess Derrick Andersson wasn`t concerned about keeping his affairs a secret. I drug myself upstairs to grab a couple hours of sleep, if possible. And yes, I did stop at my child`s door to make sure he was still breathing. It`s a mom thing.

Tricia Andersen Pays a Visit!

Please welcome fellow Secret Cravings author Tricia Anderson, who is here to share some info about her new release, Breaking the Silence. You know me. I love a good sports romance, and Tricia writes some great ones!

Thanks for having me on today!Since my wonderful host loves to write about her favorite sport - which we all know is hockey - I thought I would share mine too which I also write about.  It's not your typical sport like basketball or football.  Actually a lot of people think I'm insane for doing it.  What could it possibly be?  It's mixed martial arts or more commonly known as MMA.To be honest, I am a new convert to MMA.  A little over a year ago I didn't even like it.  It all started with my novel Breaking the Cycle (Hard Drive Series #1).  I needed to find something that my hero, Max, was forced to sacrifice for my heroine, Chloe, and I decided it would be his job as a fitness trainer.  I wanted to find a sport that people would look down on him for being a part of. It didn't take long to decide on MMA.  However, I knew nothing about mixed martial arts.  I didn't want to Google it or watch videos.  I wanted talk to a real fighter.I e-mailed Keoni Koch, the owner of my local gym, Hard Drive MMA, and asked if I could send him a few questions.  He graciously agreed and I did.  As I waited for him to send them back I checked out the gym's website and noticed they offered kickboxing classes.  I always wanted to try kickboxing plus I really needed to lose weight.  One month wouldn't hurt, right?  I am still not sure how I survived that first class.  I am happy to report, however, that I am still a proud member of the Hard Drive family.  I still attend class twice a week and go to open gyms all weekend.  I sport my many, many bruises with pride.  I've gone to live events and am currently helping a couple of friends through fight camp.  What does all this have to do with being an author?  Being a part of Hard Drive has given me a unique perspective to writing MMA romance.  When I write about a fight I know how to describe the punches because I've thrown them.  I've watched jiu jitsu holds up close and personal (sometimes a little too close!).  I know the jargon because I speak it.And my Hard Drive family has helped me tremendously with my MMA romances.  They explain things that happen in a fight I don't understand.  Three of the fighters have posed for the covers including Keoni who is on the cover of Breaking the Cycle (Hard Drive Series #1).  They support me, promote me and inspire me.  They are the most incredible people I know.People may think I'm crazy to be a MMA fan and even crazier to train.  Other than writing I can't think of anything I'd rather do.  Enjoy a sneak peek of Breaking the Cycle (Hard Drive Series #1).  The sequel to Breaking the Cycle

Excerpt:Max stepped inside the gym. It was deserted. He glanced around. The place was no Roadie’s. There was no perfect, stainless steel trim. There was no state-of-the-art equipment. He scrutinized the cardio machines that were lined three deep along a wall of frosted windows then scanned the weight equipment alongside it. Everything looked like it was in working order. The rest of the room was lined with vinyl wrestling mats. There were signs indicating locker rooms back in the hallway. A staircase leading to a walkway on the second floor led to a couple offices and a conference room.Suddenly, its door opened. Max steeled himself as a young, well-built, suit-clad man stepped out and leaned against the metal rail. His slicked–back, black hair made him look like a used car salesman. He smiled down at Max.“Hey, Jack,” Max greeted coolly.“What brings you to Hard Drive, Max?”“I came to talk to you about the job offer you gave me.”Jack laughed. “How many times did I offer a job to you?”“At least a dozen times.”“And how many times have you turned me down?”“Just as many.”“Why would I offer it to you again?”“Because, to quote your own words, ‘I’m the best you could possibly dream of getting’.”“So, you suddenly got over your hang ups about working here?”Max took a deep breath and exhaled slowly. “No. I am still vehemently against training your guys to the best of my ability so that you can toss them into an octagon and let them beat the crap out of each other. Seems to make the job pointless, don’t you think?”“I don’t toss them in there. They fight of their own free will.”“Is the job available or not?”“Of course, it is.” Jack was smug.“I have stipulations before I agree to it.”Jack snickered. “Of course, you do. More money? Do you want me to buy you a better car?”Max glared at him. “I want an assistant. Full time with benefits, especially medical. I write her schedule. She answers to me. Your fighters don’t touch her. If they do, we’re both out of here. Don’t raise the salary you offered me. Lower it, if you must. But I get my assistant.”“You really think you need an assistant?”“How many MMA fighters do you have here?”Max could see Jack’s brow crunch as he computed the numbers in his head. “Thirty.”“Then, yes, I need an assistant.”“And you realize that you aren’t going to teach Tae Bo here, right? You’re training my MMA fighters. And your assistant will be, too.”Max paused. “Yes. I know what I’ll be doing.”Jack pushed himself away from the rail and stood straight. “You’re hired. And so is your assistant. There’ll be no change in your salary. I’ll negotiate your assistant’s with you at a later time. I promise it’ll be fair. Be here Monday to sign your contracts. And give Roadie your two weeks’ notice. You belong to Hard Drive now.”Jack strode back into the conference room, closing the door behind him. Max shot one last glare at the door before he walked out the front door.

Kathleen lives in New Jersey with her husband and their two dogs. She’s a registered nurse who works in an emergency room. Writing has been her passion since she was a young girl. Contemporary and paranormal romance are her favorites. She has three adult children and three lovable grandsons. Her favorite romantic getaway is Cape May, New Jersey. You might find Kathleen on a beach down the Jersey Shore, wearing a straw hat, sipping on an iced tea, dreaming up her next romance novel.
