Torn: A Debut Urban Fantasy from Ashley Stambaugh
Ashley Stambaugh is in the spotlight today with her debut novel, Torn.
Back cover blurb
Three months have passed and Melina thought she was safe. Safe from the effects of the angel powers and safe from the Noxin demons. But she thought too soon.
Just as she’s starting to enjoy her new powers and her new relationship with Lee, the slight pain she still experiences after using the powers starts to grow worse. As the pain becomes more and more unbearable, she finds herself lashing out at innocent people with unexplained anger and hatred. Then to make matters worse, she sees a Noxin demon again.
No one, not even the elders, seems to know what’s happening to Melina, or how a Noxin demon found her. And when she’s introduced to Dean, another unique human like herself, she learns that his pain is completely gone, which only makes her situation even more confusing.
Grasping for any type of answer, Melina throws out one possible explanation after another. But as her angry feelings intensify, and her angel powers grow weaker, she begins to think there might be something malevolent inside her that’s trying to take over. It’s not long before her internal struggle spirals out of control, and her body is turned into a battlefield that’s torn between good and evil.
Melina fears that if no solution is found, then she might lose all the people she loves, especially Lee. But what scares her even more is that she might lose herself to evil.
Torn Choosing between good and evil isn’t always that easy.
Excerpt
Melina released his hands and nodded again as she turned to gaze out the front windshield. "I'll talk to him as soon as I…ʺ Her voice trailed off as she continued to stare out the window. "Is it the pain again?ʺ Lee asked. "No," Melina replied, her face turning paler by the second. He glanced out the window and then back at her, a look of concern in his eyes. ʺWhat’s wrong then? What do you see?" "A demon." She continued to stare out the window, her body frozen stiff with fear. Lee's brow furrowed. "Why are you so scared? I know you can see angels all the time now, but I thought you could see all sorts of different demons now, too. " Melina's eyes remained fixed out the window. The demon's black, billowy figure wasn't exclusive to his particular group, but the fiery red eyes were unmistakable. "This isn't just some random demon. It's a Noxin demon." Lee's expression turned serious. "Those are the ones I saw on the video footage from my apartment, right? The ones you said were really dangerous?ʺ She gave him a stiff nod, but kept her gaze locked on the demon. Out of the corner of her eye she saw him looking out the window to see if he could spot the demon himself. "Where is he?ʺ Lee asked. "He’s behind the antique store across the street, lurking back in the alley.ʺ Lee leaned forward in his seat and squinted his eyes as he looked in that direction. ʺI don't see it."
Melina's breath suddenly caught in her throat. "It's gone. It's gone!ʺ She sat up in her seat, her eyes frantically searching the area outside. A few seconds later she turned to look at Lee, her bright green eyes wide with fear. "This is serious. We need to go.ʺ

Devon's Choice: A New Inspirational Romance by Catherine Bennett
Inspirational and fellow Astraea Press author, Catherine Bennett is in the spotlight today.Welcome, Catherine!

Faith, love and a cup of coffee, can change everything.Life holds no surprises for Devon Murphy. Her life consists of keeping tabs on her aging Irish father, working part time at a coffee shop, and building her online graphics design business. Devon’s only tricky situation is a shallow relationship with the pampered and affluent Michael Turner, who sees her as just another woman to conquer.
Following his father’s death, Brandon’s only goal is to expand the family business and live life on his own terms. That is, until he walks into the coffee shop one snowy evening and meets the enchanting, red-haired barista behind the counter. But can Devon and Brandon’s attraction for each other be strong enough to help erase their deepest disappointments and renew their faith in God?
EXCERPT:
Once they got to the park, Devon unhooked his leash. The dog ran in the snow and stopping abruptly, he turned, tongue out and ears perked. Brandon reached down and patted snow into a ball and threw it far beyond Bubby, who took off after it. After a few more throws, they left the dog to himself and walked along the brick path to a bench. Brandon brushed the snow off with his gloved hand and they sat down. Bubby played some more, then lay with his head up and ears alert. “I’m curious,” Brandon said, leaning forward with his elbows on his knees. “I may be out of line to ask you, but what kind of relationship do you have with this Michael guy?” He looked sideways to see her worrying her bottom lip and hoped he was going to get a truthful statement. “It’s pretty shallow, really. We’ve never discussed being an exclusive couple. He travels a lot with his company and I figure he probably goes out with other women, and not just for business if you know what I mean. Once he practically admitted to it.” “What kind of job does he have?” Devon, who’d been watching the dog, turned to look at him. “He’s the Executive Vice President for Turner Construction. His father owns the company.” Brandon drew himself back. “Turner Construction! That’s the largest construction company in the Midwest.” “So, you’ve heard of it?” “Yes, my dad had some experience with them.” “So was it a good experience?” Brandon shrugged. “I really couldn’t say.” Then, hoping to refocus her attention, he asked, “How’d you ever meet him anyway?” “He hit my car in a parking lot. Not very romantic.” Brandon looked over at her neutral expression. Whatever kind of relationship she had with Michael Turner didn’t seem to be making her happy. At that moment, all he wanted to do was to make her forget all about the jerk. As if sensing him watching her, Devon turned her head enough to make eye contact with him. The faint, milky glow from the streetlight showed enough of her features for him to see a soft blush warm her cheeks. Under her dark lashes, he watched her sea green eyes glint invitingly as her soft lips turned up at the corners. In that moment, his resolve to keep the date on a friendly level came crashing down.

Maria Ann Green on Self-harm, Depression, and Overcoming Obstacles
Last week author Maria Ann Green was in the spotlight with her new Young Adult novel, In the Rearview. The subject matter - self-harm and depression - is so important, I asked Maria to write a follow-up post on why she wrote the book.
Why I wrote REARVIEW:
I had the idea for In the Rearview as far back as when I was in middle and high school. I knew people going through the same issues that take place in the book. Depression, self-harm, and issues like these are surprisingly common in adolescence. I wanted to tell the story so many suffer through in a way that shed some light on the pain while also giving hope to those who can relate. I also wanted to do something completely different than anything else I’ve read before, and I love poetry, so I told a lot of the story in that way. I started it over ten years ago, and it was just published in 2014. I began with writing the poetry, then I added Meagan's (the main character) diary entries, and finally I wove in the narrative parts. Eventually, when it was all combined, IN THE REARVIEW told a story of heartbreak, healing, and hope. It's a story I was familiar with, and one I genuinely hope will help some readers. It's a unique version of a universal story about struggling, and learning to overcome obstacles to come out the other side of those problems a bit stronger.

In the Rearview: A Young Adult Novel About Self-harm and Hope

Heartbreak, Healing, Hope
Blurb: When Meagan’s secret is found out, and she realizes there is no way to outrun her habit of cutting, she tries to work through it, and her depression, before she cuts too deep, making a mistake that can never be undone.
Meagan's problems aren't like every other adolescent's no matter how much she wishes they could be. Hers are worse. They've pulled her down into the depths of a depression that is anything but normal. She begins her pattern of self-harm as her depression threatens to drown her. She starts with one cut that leads to the next, and the next. After starting, it's apparent that there's no stopping, and Meagan spirals into a dark and cruel world she doesn't understand. Meagan cuts to feel better, but that comfort doesn't last long enough, and soon life is worse than it ever was before.
While learning to quit cutting Meagan faces life-altering obstacles and grows up in the process. IN THE REARVIEW is a story of pain, loss, confusion, and hope told through Meagan’s poems, journal entries, and a splash of narrative.
Excerpt:Meagan stared down at her desk. Her focus moved beyond the assignment in front of her without actually seeing what she was looking toward. There were lines, spaces of white, and blobs of writing, but nothing seemed important enough to consider closely. Truthfully she didn’t care. She didn’t feel the need to focus. Her gaze slowly moved up to the front of the classroom, and again she fixated on a point past what was before her. She did not concentrate on the teacher. There was a face, a moving mouth, but she didn’t connect it with the sounds struggling slowly, like sticky sludge past her ears. She didn’t hear the instructions being uttered; each word fell on deaf ears as she mindlessly doodled.Twisting her hair around her finger, she thought about how nice it would be to be at home, in bed, with the curtains closed instead of in this loud and hyper school. It seemed her classmates had recently started caring too much about what was going on around them. There was too much drama, too much noise, too much concern jumping all around her. It was all so taxing. It was such a bother. Meagan, in contrast, was usually in a world of her own. Her head felt fuzzy most of the time, and unless she used a lot of energy, most conversations sounded muffled, like there was cotton in her ears. She didn’t feel the need to engage anymore. Her desire to try so hard just to do what had once come easily had dwindled to nothing. At first she’d tried, but not now. Not anymore. It had become too difficult to care. And that was her biggest problem. Meagan didn’t care much about any of these changes. She was fine walking through school without any effort. Her feet felt a little heavier as each day passed, and her head felt a little more under pressure of a crushing fog that numbed her, but she pushed through it all. She didn’t mind neglecting what used to bring her excitement. In fact, it was just easier not to give a crap.Everything was distinctly lackluster these days.

And so she wroteAbout me: Maria Green currently lives in Minnesota, despite its bitter winters, with her husband. She graduated with a degree in Psychology and a minor in English. When she isn’t writing, Maria loves to read with a cup of strong coffee or a glass of sweet wine, craft, and spend time with her family. This is her first published novel.
My favorite YA Contemporary books:
Thirteen Reasons Why, Cut, You Remind Me of You, The Catcher in the Rye
Books I still want to read in this genre: Uses For Boys, Perks of Being a Wallflower, Speak
Fun facts about me: My favorite color is pink, yes still. My lucky number is 13. I love coffee, sweet white wine, and anything chocolate. I love having painted toenails. Scarves are my favorite Accessory. My favorite season is fall, and we have beautiful ones in Minnesota. I have a cat named Riley who was named after the character in National Treasure. My favorite place on earth is Paris, and I hope to go back someday.
Fun facts about the book: Meagan (the main character) went almost ten years without a name. For the longest time she was just "she" or "her" or "me." The narrative was the last part to be written. The poems were the first. So far it is the only YA book I've written. Also, my husband came up with the title.

Sapphire Blue: A New Young Adult Romance from Karen King
Karen King, author of Perfect Summer, returns with a new Young Adult paranormal romance, Sapphire Blue. Welcome, Karen!
Can love survive death?“No one has ever walked out of Red. Once the Soul Catchers get you they don’t let you go.” Denny’s words scare me but I have no choice. If Will is in Red that’s where I have to go.I’ve never really thought what it was like when you died. I’m only 16, too young to worry about that. At least I thought I was. I’ve heard about Heaven and Hell, of course, but it doesn’t look like I’m in either of them. All I know is that Will is here too and I need to find him. I can’t face spending eternity without him.
Sapphire Blue – Extract
Our first drive together. Later, I’ll take photos of wherever it is we’re going, save a leaflet, a ticket, or receipt. Today deserves a whole page in our scrapbook. Will’s a good driver. His eyes constantly dart to the mirrors to check what’s behind him, around him, in front of him, and he keeps his speed steady. I feel safe with him. I look out of the passenger window, trying to guess where we’re going. As soon as we join the dual carriageway I know. Mawlish Cove. Where we went for our very first proper date. It’s our special place, the one we go to when we want to celebrate something, but usually we have to cycle there. I think of all the places we can go now that Will can drive, to the coast a few miles away, a sightseeing tour of the local villages, maybe even drive to Wales to see my cousin, Gemma. I’ll be seventeen in a few months and maybe I can pass my test too, then we can go away for weekend, share the driving. I glance at Will and smile. I’m so proud of him. “I love you,” I say. “Love you too,” he replies. Then he starts singing. “Sapphire Blue, I do love you, Forever me, Forever you!” I join in the chorus, bubbles of happiness fizzing through me. Will wrote the song for me last Christmas, calling it Sapphire ‘Blue’ after the color of my eyes—he said. He knew his folks were buying him the guitar he’d been begging for all year, so had secretly written the song to surprise me. It was the first thing he played. I remember how he picked up the guitar, slowly strumming the strings, then he’d walked over to me, sat down beside me and gazing into my eyes he’d started singing. It was only a short song, one verse, nothing special, I guess, but it summed us up. Me and Will, together forever. A warm surge of love spreads through me. I reach out and touch his hand. He turns to me and our eyes meet. Just for a couple of seconds. An eye blink. Hardly any time at all. But long enough for us to not notice the container fall off the back of the lorry in front. When we do notice, it’s in the middle of the road, blocking our path. A shard of ice slithers down my spine. “Stop! Will, stop! We’re going to crash!” Even as I shriek the words I know that there isn’t enough time to stop. I’m frozen to my seat, my eyes fixed in terror on the huge metal box just meters away. “Hold tight!” Will jerks the steering wheel to the left in an attempt to avoid it, but he loses control of the car, and we’re skidding off the road. OMG, now we’re heading for a huge tree. It’s looming in front of us, solid and immovable. Its long, leafy branches swaying in the wind like scaly, green arms reaching out to grab us. “Shit!” Will’s almost standing on the brakes in an effort to stop the car. My body shoots forward, then is pulled back by the seatbelt. My head slams against the back of the seat. The tires screech as the car starts to slow down but not quick enough for us to avoid the tree. I shut my eyes, not wanting to see the inevitable, horrific moment of impact. I can hear Will shouting, “I’m sorry, I’m sorry. I love you!” I want to tell him that I love him too, but I can’t speak, can’t move, my body’s turned into a block of granite. I’m dimly aware that someone is screaming as if their soul is being ripped from their body. It is a few seconds before I realize that the screams are mine. We’re going to die. Craaaaaash! An explosion shatters in my head.

Discover a Fun, New, Marriage of Convenience novel
Brooke Williams, author of Wrong Place, Right Time, is today's guest host.(Be sure to scroll down to the giveaway!) Welcome, Brooke!
Have you ever found yourself in the wrong place at the right time?
I actually met my husband in a slightly “Wrong Place, Right Time” manner! I was in college and he was finished with his degree and in the working world. We lived in two different cities about an hour and a half apart. I lived off campus and one Friday night, I headed to the dorms to meet up with friends…or so I thought. When I arrived at my friend’s room, I discovered that absolutely everyone in my little group had a date that evening. The only person left behind was my friend’s roommate, who was also a friend, but he had a lot of homework to get done. Instead of forcing me to leave dejected and with no plans and no date, he let me come into his room and use his roommate’s computer while he did his homework.
I trolled some chat sites and ended up running across my husband. We emailed back and forth for a week or so before he handed his phone number over to me. I called him the next weekend and we talked for four hours. I was at my friend’s dorm room at the wrong time. No one was available to do anything with me as I expected. But it ended up being the right time because had I not been bored and mostly alone, I may never have met Sean!
It’s interesting how life works out that way sometimes. You make a mistake, but it turns out for the better. You’re late to work only to hear there was a large accident in the intersection you would have gone through. You get lost only to run into a long lost friend. Sometimes, these things happen coincidentally. Other times, it seems as if the wrong place shows up at just the right time!
In this novella, the main character, Kate, stops what she thinks is her male best friend’s wedding. She quickly realizes she has complete strangers standing at an altar before her. And though the bride runs away and she is left with a ruined potential marriage on her hands, being at the wrong place doesn’t mean she wasn’t there at just the right time! I hope you enjoy the story. Even if you’ve never barged into a chapel and shouted “Stop the wedding!” I think you’ll be able to relate to Kate and her situation!
And the next time you end up in the wrong place, ask yourself if there’s a reason for it…are you there at the right time after all?
