Indie Kissing Blogfest + Giveaway!
Welcome, blogfesters!
It's Valentine's Day - the most wonderful time of the year, according to Hallmark. For the rest of us, it's a chance to snuggle up to our better half. Of course, sometimes, our better half is actually a book. And when it comes to books, I'm a sucker for epic stories. One of my favorite stories is "The Princess Bride," by William Goldman. And it just so happens to have one of my favorite kissing scenes. It is, in fact, the best kiss in the history of the universe. That's quite the claim, but I, for one, believe it.
There have been five great kisses since 1642 B.C., when Saul and Delilah Korn's inadvertent discovery swept across Western civilization. (Before then couples hooked thumbs.) And the precise rating of kisses is a terribly difficult thing, often leading to great controversy, because although everyone agrees with the formula of affection times purity times intensity times duration, no one has ever been completely satisfied with how much weight each element should receive. But on any system, there are five that everyone agrees deserve full marks.
Well, this one left all them behind.
Now, that's a kiss.
I have exactly one, very short, kissing scene in my debut novel, The Sock Wars. My main character, Lucy, and her boyfriend Oliver live in a small house in Astoria, Queens. Oliver's mother, Edith, shows up on their doorstep, unexpected and uninvited, with a ton of suitcases, and proceeds to stay with them for a month. This is the scene that happens immediately after Edith leaves:
When I reach the threshold of the second-floor apartment, Oliver walks toward me and without saying a word reaches out for my hand and pulls me through the door into an embrace that flattens my ribs. All of a sudden we’re a tangle of arms and legs, trying to make our way to the bed we haven’t slept in since Edith arrived on our doorstep. His arms pull up my shirt at the same time he kisses me, straight on, with no pretense, his breath warm against my mouth. My hands are in his hair, pulling him closer to me as he eases me onto the bed, carefully, gently, like always, but with a hunger running through him. Everything in me answers. We don’t manage to get all of our clothes off, but it’s close enough.

Wattpad is Launching a New Genre on Feb 11th - and The Sock Wars is Helping
I love Wattpad's definition of ChickLit:
"Spotlighting the plight of smart, strong female characters, ChickLit is a form of fiction that looks at the journey into womanhood and all the little hiccups that are faced along the way. Characters typically range in age from mid-20’s to mid-40’s and are often about to embark on a crucial period in their lives."
...sounds just like The Sock Wars! Wattpad is launching ChickLit as a new genre on February 11th, and they've selected The Sock Wars to include in their secondary feature selection. (Yay!)
Swing by Wattpad on Monday to see the launch. Marian Keyes is headlining and there are lots of other awesome writers to find. And reading on Wattpad will satisfy everyone's budget - it's free!
