Southern Smart and Friendly: Atlanta’s Maker Faire

Screen Shot 2013-10-28 at 2.19.47 PM The Atlanta Mini Maker Faire surrounded the Tech Green at Georgia Tech on Saturday, attracting an estimated 10,000 attendees to see rockets, robots, steampunk, 3D printers, woodworking, kinetic sculptures, art bikes, lawnbots, a mobile makerspace and much more.

Make the World: Prosthetics Build Party

Printing prosthetics on a Printrbot+, Replicator 2 and Afinia Adafruit Industries just hosted the final session of their Make The World: Prosthetics Program. To help out, Matt Stultz of 3D Printing Providence put together a build party at AS220 Labs with 19 local 3D printers to make prosthetic hands for those in need.

Building the Perfect Sand-Art Pen

Screen Shot 2013-10-26 at 10.07.47 AM Austrian couple Benedikt Wurth and Rosi Binder have built the ideal sand art pen. Unlike sand pens already in existence, the Sand-Pen has a button which engages the built-in motor, allowing the sand to flow freely. Holding the pen close to a surface achieves fine line, while pulling the pen farther away gives a wider, more airbrushed look. I spoke with Benedikt about treehouses, tools, and his design process.

Makers@theMint Logo Makers are taking over the historic Mint in downtown San Francisco on November 23-24. Coming right before Thanksgiving and the holiday season, Makers@theMint is a pop-up retail event featuring unique handcrafted goods and other maker merchandise.
