Before studying abroad in Amman, Jordan in the fall of 2012, my last moments in the United States were spent at the McDonald’s in the Pittsburgh International Airport. Why Become a Marine Biologist?
I give the okay signal and roll back off the boat; the water engulfs me. Submerging below the ocean surface, I become one with the sea. With slow steady strokes from my fins pushing me forward, and the loud reassuring sound of the dive regulator filling my lungs with oxygen, I am able to take in all of the reef’s ecosystem.

It’s less than 30 degrees Fahrenheit out and light flurries flutter from the sky. They dance in the brisk wind that’s chilling my body. Jeans weren’t a good idea, but when are they ever in winter? The sun is hidden behind a blanket of gray clouds, leaving the city dim for the twelve in the afternoon time.

As I went up the mountain in an old-fashioned cogwheel train, the peaks of Schynige Platte surrounded me. If you didn’t know, Schynige Platte is a Swiss mountain region just south of Interlaken, composed of many breathtaking views.
