Review - All The Boys I've Loved Before

To All The Boys I've Loved Before by Jenny Han

Publisher - ScholasticNumber of Pages - 420My Rating -

'Lara Jean's love life is about to go from imaginary to out of control.
Lara Jean Song keeps love letters in a hatbox her mother gave her - one for every boy she's ever loved. She can say anything she wants, because the letters are for her eyes only. Until the day they're sent out...'

'To All The Boys I've Loved Before' was an good, quick read that I managed to get through on a lazy Sunday morning. It was fresh while still maintaining all the things a good YA read should have. Even though it does feature a love triangle (of sorts) it's done in a way that doesn't make me roll my eyes and want to throw it away. Like Han’s previous series (The Summer series) it deals with teen issues of unrequited love and insecurities, it also deals with larger issues. The Song Girls mother died when Lara Jean was young and since then they’ve had to deal with that. It doesn't go into the emotional fallout much (which was surprising) but it deals with the family coming closer together to try and bridge that gap their mother left.
I liked Lara Jean's character and her ability to be herself through most of this book. When she starts 'dating' she steps out of her comfort zone but there is no progression in her character. It feels as though she relies on sub characters to do the work for her. Like after the ski trip it's Chris who takes control, her little sister seems to instigate most of the couples relationship progression and between her and Josh it's always Josh who made the first move. I feel like the only time Lana and Peter were truly themselves was when they went to the auction house.
Maybe I'm expecting too much from the character but seeing as there is a sequel coming out, hopefully we might see some of that maturity come through.
But apart from that, I think that the idea behind this is somewhat brilliant. I love the idea of writing letters to lost loves, not only as a way of closure, but also a future reference when you're older to your teenage angst-y feelings. Who doesn't love remembering that?!
As a little experiment after reading this book, I sat down at my computer and began to write my own 'To All The Boy's I've Loved Before' letters. The results were surprising if slightly depressing. :)
I've included them below, names changed - of course.

Dear BandDrummer,
You told me to wait till I was 21. I did and you weren’t there. I know the deal was just a kind way of letting a love-sick child down gently.Which only makes me like you even more. I still think about you sometimes.

Dear SorryIBrokeOurFriendship,

Sorry I could only make our relationship last 16 hours. Even though I had known you for years and felt like I could tell you anything, I wasn’t ready. Everyone else had boyfriends and going out together, so when they suggested we go out I felt like I had to. I liked you. I really did. But I was afraid. I saw you in town the other week. We did the ‘I don’t know you dance’. I heard you now have two kids. Weird.

Dear HolidayRomance,

I felt like I was just a toy to you. You made me feel something that I wouldn’t allow myself to feel. And then you did what you did. Something that I could never allow to continue. You once said that I was cold and unfeeling. Maybe you were right. I sure a hell wouldn’t allow you to use me again.

Dear SkaterBoy,

My feelings for you broke when you choose her. And the one after that, and the one after that. Years later when I confessed that I liked you, you said you knew. Not once since the first moment I met you have you ever told me you liked me. It seemed like you always expected me to make the first move. I could never tell if it was because you had genuine feelings or you just wanted to see if I ever could.

You should know that I never would.

You should have made the first move.

Return of Book Sanctuary!

Oh man! It's been forever since the last time I was here.
A lot has changed.
I'm back in England (for the foreseeable future) and I'm now training to be a nurse (excited dance!)
Unlike my last degree, where I was working full time as well, I felt that I couldn't do both. This nursing course is really hard and needed my undivided attention. But I found that not working and not having a social life means I still have some free time.
And that got me thinking about this blog. I went over to Booktube sometime in 2013, something which I hope to also start back up as I really enjoyed myself there. However with the death of my camera (R.I.P GoPro) I had nothing to film on.

But this blog was never far from my mind in the absence. And I found myself writing reviews, just never publishing them.

That is now all about to change!

REVIEW

'I don't know how long I stood there, taking in the shining floors, the double row of whirring escalators, the painted eyes of the mannequins. Everything was pristine. As if the War and the Great Fire had never happened. As if my biggest problem right then was what flavour ice cream to buy, or which book to choose with my birthday money.'

"The end of Honour Quest is a carefully guarded secret. Nobody I know has finished it yet. And really, it's not about the destination. It's getting there that's the good part. But there have been rumours that the princess isn't the final goal. That at the end of it, the game reboots and you're on a new quest..."

New Things Ahead

You may have noticed the changed name of the blog and semi-boring layout (seriously, I've said before. Blogger INFURIATES ME! I'm not smart enough to master it :((( )

Over my absence, between trips, illness and working 16-hour shifts, I have been avidly [obsessively] watching booktubers on youtube. I can't remember how I came across it but all I know is that I can't stop thinking about it.

So I've created my own.

Here's my channel intro and explanation for my next step
