Vom 20. - 22. April 2012 fand in Regensburg eine Pharmaziehistorische Biennale statt, die sich dem Thema "Wissenschaftsdifferenzierung in der Pharmazie - Entwicklung pharmazeutischer Zweigdisziplinen" widmete. Der Band versammelt die neun Vorträge dieser Biennale.

Die Weiterentwicklung der Arzneimittel, die zunächst nur Naturstoffe pflanzlicher, tierischer und mineralischer Provenienz, seit dem17./18. Jahrhundert aber auch zunehmend synthetisch hergestellte anorganische Arzneistoffe umfassten, induzierte die Entstehung von Zweigdisziplinen. Diese wandten sich einzelnen Aspekten zu, so Pharmaka aus pflanzlichen und tierischen Drogen (Pharmakognosie bzw. heute Pharmazeutische Biologie), den chemisch hergestellten Arzneistoffen (Pharmazeutische bzw. Medizinische Chemie), derArzneistoffformulierung (Galenik bzw. Pharmazeutische Technologie) sowie der Wirkung der Arzneimittel (Pharmakologie).

Vier der Vorträge widmen sich der Entstehung und Entwicklung der Pharmazeutischen Fächer an den deutschen Hochschulen. Fünf der Vorträge befassen sich mit den Verhältnissen in Frankreich, der Schweiz, den USA und in der früheren DDR. Es werden die Wege der Klinischen Pharmazie aufgezeigt, die ihren Ausgang in den USA nahm. Die Arzneimittelkontrolle als universitäres Fach und der Fachapotheker für Arzneimittelkontrolle in der DDR werden untersucht. Schließlich wird an verschiedenen Beispielen die Weiterbildung der Apotheker länderübergreifend erörtert.
