What's Happening in the World of the Valens--
Sorry I haven't posted anything new in the lineup of mythological characters, honestly I haven't decided what the next major addition will be. I want something we don't see often. Maybe from African or Australian lore. The third book in the series, though it is not yet started will be in the works soon.
In the mean time, I am working on Valens Remembered. The prequel to Valens Rise. Almost have this short story ready for edits. I may have already told you, when it becomes available, it will be perpetually free. I hope it will stir a few readers to pick up the first two books.
Remember to go to "goodreads" and signup for the giveaway of Valens Revenge (Book 2). You could be the winner of one of the ten signed copies that will be awarded. Don't want to wait for the end of the contest? The Valens books are available for a new lower price of $1.99 each for a limited time. Click to go to the page where you will locate them:Smashwords
Following is the opening for Valens Remembered. Hope it draws you in. You are welcome to pick up the books and leave a few reviews on goodreads or Amazon. Would love to hear from you. Chapter One Griffin Hawke glanced at Larinda as she stood between him and Jonathan Grey. She stared at the coffins being lowered into the ground. The rain took no pity on the mourners, blowing in past the edges of the tent, turning her auburn hair to water-soaked black, and mingling with the tears that fell from her sapphire eyes. And I would also love to hear from you if you have a favorite mythical creature that isn't already listed on this blog. Who knows, the creature could be the next villain or hero! Thanks for checking in.

Larinda - Transformation to Unicorn
Larinda, can change poisoned water to pure drinking water, and has the power to heal those who have been exposed to the deadly fluids. She may be able to stop natural disasters in order to protect mankind. A very useful power, I think considering how many events seem to have occurred of late around the world.
Following is a preview of the prequel to Valens Rise. "Valens Remembered" is a short story currently in the works, and will give the readers a look into the excitement Larinda Nix Thomas feels when she begins the search for Jemma. The following is a glimpse of what it was like the first time Larinda transformed from human to Unicorn.
"Her nerves tingled as excitement built and she opened her eyes. The world shimmered with a magical beauty. A fluid power surged through her and she knew it announced a long awaited change. Her bones and muscles slid effortlessly into the form she was fated to accept and she rose from the ground as unicorn. The afternoon was spent with the wind whipping her mane as she raced across the property reveling in the feel of the sun on her gleaming white coat "
Hope you enjoy like the description and will let your friends know to watch for this soon to be published short story. Come back next week and visit the world of the Valens.

OMG! - It's Wednesday
I got so excited that Valens Revenge is now available on Amazon I completely forgot what the day was and didn't post my usual Wednesday night diatribe about what the Valens are and are not. I promise to do better.
I do hope you will forgive me and instead I will give you a small taste of the short story I am writing, the prequel to Valens Rise. From Chapter One of Valens Remembered:
"Larinda stood between Griffin Hawke and Jonathan Grey as stared at the coffins being lowered into the ground. The rain took no pity on the mourners, blowing in past the edges of the tent, turning her auburn hair to water soaked black, and mingling with the tears that fell from her sapphire eyes."
You may remember from Rise, that Larinda was Jemma's sister. This short is about the search for Jemma that lead to her discovery she was both Valen and the hereditary leader of the race. Look for this to become available soon. And though it's a secret --- shhhh!--- I'll tell just you - it will be free.
Come back next week and I'll tell you about Larinda's fate, the Unicorn.

In the works
With the completion of Valens Revenge, I am working on several short stories and haven't yet decided what the Valen characters will be. The first one is Valen's Remembers, a short-story that takes place before book one from Larinda Nix Thomas's point of view. Next we have Valens Reviled, told by Alis, one of the ancient Watchers, it tells us why Valen's no longer appear to us in their fated forms. finally Valens Recognized, a short story that occurs between book one and book two where Jemma searches for the lost Valen children who have runaway and know nothing of their heritage.
If you have any ideas for the mythological characters your want to see within the Valen's stories, please feel free to give me information of what creatures is the legend, where the legend came from, and what the stories are that make up the myth. If not I will continue to look at possibilities from the stories I have heard and the tales people tell.
Remember, Valens Revenge will be out next month. Here is the cover - hope you like it:

Valen's Revenge - Chapter 1
Tonight I hope you will take the time to read and enjoy Chapter One of Valen's Revenge, which will be available for sale next month. You've met many of the characters in Book One, Valens Rise, now we continue the story with the search for Cerberus and the Humani.
Chapter 1 No one of consequence would argue. Grant Mayfair had to die…painfully. But first they had to catch him. Griffin Hawke smacked the wheel of the cabin cruiser in frustration. Six months. Six months he and his team had been hunting down that traitorous Manticore, and he’d always stayed just out of reach. Now they’d lost him again—this time in a godforsaken Florida bay with dozens of tributaries. “Tao!” Hawke called. “We need you!”His voice was snatched away by the wind, but Tao had excellent hearing. He popped his head out of the cabin. “Where’s Electra?” he asked.“She couldn’t keep up with Mayfair’s boat,” Hawke said. “They went up a tributary into fresh water, and she didn’t have time to adjust.” Electra, like the rest of Hawke’s team, was a Valen—one of the shape-shifting guardians of humankind. Her mermaid form was perfect for water tracking, but her inability to transition smoothly into breathing salt water instead of fresh was a drawback.“Yeah,” Tao said. He shook his head. “She’s gonna be pissed about losing him.”Hawke said, “She’s going to be even more pissed if you stand around on deck talking instead of taking over the tracking. And so am I. This isn’t a vacation. We’ve got to move. Grant’s slipped through our fingers too many times.”With a grin, Tao pulled his shirt over his head and dove into the murky liquid created by the violent clash of the salt and fresh water. As he surfaced, his entire body rippled and changed. It became elongated and sleek, iridescent scales shimmering in the sunlight as he morphed to the sea dragon that was his fated form.Hawke waited impatiently, engine throttled down, while Tao conferred with Electra, getting the location of the tributary where she’d lost Mayfair’s boat. They hadto get Mayfair. Six months ago, he had betrayed them all, nearly destroying the Valens’ training facility in an attempt to assassinate their Phoenix, Jemma Nix. And he wasn’t through trying to bring them down.Jemma had only recently discovered her fate, and it was Grant Mayfair she had turned to in her shock and disbelief at discovering she was Valen—a sister race to mankind. The biggest shock was that she was not just Valen, but Phoenix—the hereditary leader and owner of Legacy Security, the front company through which the Valens coordinated their worldwide guardianship of humans. Hawke was still sickened at the memory of the vile, genetically engineered creatures Grant and his partners had sent after Jemma. Humani, he called them. Snake-human hybrids, cat people, bat people—all bred to be mindless killing machines, relentlessly hunting their prey and bringing horrible, painful death. It was a miracle Jemma had survived—but so many others hadn’t. The final battle at the Legacy facility in Flower Mound had been bloody and brutal. Grant and his partners, Astrid Van Horne and Dr. Horace Gruen, had been defeated, but they’d escaped. They’d disappeared—gone underground, and become known as Cerberus. The three-headed hound of Hell. They were still breeding monsters, in secret. They needed to be stopped. Behind Hawke, Electra leaped out of the water, slapping her tail on the surface to send herself spinning in a graceful arc through the air. Her mermaid form transformed mid-air, brilliant red scales melting to become skin-tight jeans. She landed effortlessly on the cruiser’s deck, her hair dripping with sea water. Tao took off, and Hawke boosted the throttle and followed.Hawke asked Electra, “Did you see who was with Mayfair in the boat?”She shook her head. “Nobody I recognized,” she said. “Not that I got a good look.”Amelia Shaw, the fourth member of their team, came out of the cabin and threw Electra a towel. “You okay?” she asked. “Hell no,” Electra said. “I wanted to take the bastard down. I can’t believe I didn’t realize it was him in that boat until I was too far back to do any good.”“It’s not your fault,” Amelia said, but her face was tight with emotion. Hawke stayed silent, wondering for the hundredth time if he should have included Amelia on this team. Grant had killed her twin sister Miranda when he’d turned against Legacy—not just killed her but, as Manticore, had devoured her whole. They all grieved for Miranda, but Amelia was still fragile. Electra laid her hand gently on Amelia’s arm. “I’m so sorry,” she said. “We all want to avenge Miranda. When I heard what he had done to her—” She broke off, looking sick. Her voice grew taut with anger, “I was at Chryse Island, escorting a prisoner, when I found out. And I’ll be the first volunteer to escort Grant and his friends there when the time comes for the Watchers to deal with them.”Amelia stared out over the water, her body stiff. “You’ll have to stand in line,” she said through clenched teeth. “And I won’t guarantee he’ll be in any shape to make the trip once we find him.” She turned to Electra, her hands balled into fists. “He didn’t even leave me anything to mourn. She’s just—gone.”Tao made a sudden change of direction, veering northwest, and Hawke spun the wheel to follow, cursing under his breath. The deck railing dipped until it was only inches from the surface of the bay. Amelia and Electra had to fight to keep their balance, which stopped their conversation and broke the mood. It was just as well, Hawke thought. They were on a mission—this wasn’t the time or place for emotion. He raised his voice to be heard over the wind whipping across the deck. “I think he’s heading for Cockroach Bay. Call the backup team and have them head toward the Bay Road. I don’t know if he’ll get close to there, but we can try.”Amelia pulled out her cell and made the call. “They’re heading that way,” she reported. As they approached Tierra Verde, Hawke tried to stay as close to Tao as he could, but the distance between the boat and the water dragon grew wider as they sped along. That wouldn’t last, though. Tao was going to find it harder and harder to track Mayfair. The bay was becoming crowded with other boats racing through the waters and disrupting the trail. Damn. It looked like the bastard had outrun them again. Hawke opened his mind and silently called out to Jemma in Dallas, who was listening for the call. “Jem, contact Declan,” he said. “We’re going to need him. It’s time for him to get back to work and kick Grant’s butt.”
Hope you like it and can't wait to read more. If so, tell your friends about the Valens series you have found. Valens Rise and Valen's Revenge in a e-book store near you

Legend of the Chilean Peuchen
I admit I cannot confirm the existence of the Peuchen but I liked some od the characteristics listed on my favorite fiction site Wikipedia. Here you learn of a winged reptile, that mey be related to the Chupacabra or envelope vampire bates. Since the Valen series doesn't have vampires or werewolves (yet?) I decided to use the creature as a winged snake that has the ability to immobilize others with the bite and injection of venonm (rather than removal of blood).
The Peuchen in Valen's Revenge is Ignacio and he rushes to fight Astride our mercenary Harpy. He flies to the rescue...but once again I don't want to create any spoilers here so once again you will have to wait for the book.
Hope you are enjoying the collection of differences in myth and will come back next week. I admit I am going to have to put on my myth generating hat to decide what legends and characters develope for Valen's Revealed. A short story coming soon and the it is time to start book 3. Working title. Valen's

Legend of the Russian Sirin
In Valen Revenge we will meet Mallory a Sirin. Though the spelling is similar to the Siren of Greek myth and there are similar abilities attributed to these half-woman, half-bird figures, their legends came from different places. Where the Siren of Greek lore are mermaids and lure sailors to their death, the Russian version are avian creatures that can travel over vast lands to touch those they want to lure. The Sirin from Russian myth may have been introduced b Persian traders who told the tales of the Sirens' of Greece. But the Russians took the myth and made it their own. The Sirin was an evil entity, with a beautiful voice and was able to make one forget everything. Everything including the need to eat and breath which resulted in death, or so the original myth was told. Then, in the 17th or 18th century, the myth was changed to the woman combined with bird to a symbol of harmony and happiness. This newer version was said to be seen only by those who were truly happy and very few could see them. There Sirin may also represent a soiurIn Revenge, Mallory is half-woman, half-bird. She is stunning to look at in her human form and remains just as beautiful in the composite transformation. She has a voice that is so amazing, you forget what you are doing, such as trying to kill her and those who are with her. But the effect is not long lived, and those she can stop don't automatically die. She is also challenged because there are Valen compositrs that are not affected by her voice at all. One such person, immune to her songs is Astrid Van Horn, Haroy and her merry flock. As always, I hope you are enjoying the legends of the Valen. Come back next week and see which mythological character will appear in Revenge or other future tales of the Valen series. Book 1 Valens Rise totally re-edited, Available March 2013. The Water Dragon of Chinese Myth
My favorite unofficial research site, Wikipedia gives this insight into the Chinese dragons. They are legendary creatures in Chinese mythology and folklore. In Chinese art, dragons are typically portrayed as long, scaled, serpentine creatures with four legs. Chinese dragons traditionally symbolize potent and blessed powers, particularly control over water, rainfall, hurricane, and floods. The dragon is also a symbol of power, strength, and good luck. With this, the Emperor of China usually used the dragon as a symbol of his imperial power and strength.Chinese dragons are strongly associated with water in popular belief. They are believed to be the rulers of moving bodies of water, such as waterfalls, rivers, or seas. They can show themselves as water spouts (tornado or twister over water). In this capacity as the rulers of water and weather, the dragon is more anthropomorphic in form, often depicted as a humanoid, dressed in a king's costume, but with a dragon head wearing a king's headdress. In Valens Revenge, we meet Tao, he is sleek and bright as he simmers with blues, turquoise and golden multicolored scales. He can change from salt to freshwater swimming without having to blink, unlike his partner, Electra who he often teases. He is just as powerful on land and in water and though he may not look like he takes anything very seriously, he is often the voice of reason when the need arises. Tao is a good friend to have and is loyal to the Legacy Valens, ready to protect his friends and anyone threatened by Cerberus.Have a great week. Encantado - Legendary Creature of Brazil
Encantado\roughly translating means "enchanted one" in Portuguese. The Lore of Brazil most often refers to dolphins with the ability to turn into humans. The fresh water dolphins that inspire these tales are pink and live in the Amazon River. You can follow this link to Bing.com to see what one looks like Pink Dolphin
The legend says the Encantados kidnap humans they fall in love with, children born of their affairs with humans, or anyone near the river just because they like to the have someone around to keep them Company.
Our Valen Encantado actually live their lives on the land, and enter the water for the joy of swimming free down the river, or in search of the lost, or in the case of Valen's Revenge, to try to find the bad guys. You will meet three characters who are able to change from human to Encantado, then back in this story, soon to be released.
I hope you like to read these snippets of myth, legend and lore and how they relate to the Characters in the Valen series.
And I have a special request. I recently added a translate button that is supposed to translate these posts into other languages. I would love to know if it works, so if you read English and another language listed on the translate bar, send me a note just to say it did or didn't translate. If it works well I want to keep it so others can have the opportunity to take a look and find out about Valens, and Urban Fantasy. Sherrel's Email

Legend of the Mermaids
Our first mermaid appears in Valens Revenge. The legend of mermaids first appeared in Assyria but once they surfaced they have never really gone out of the lore of the world. There are two views of these lovely creatures. They can create storms, floods, shipwrecks and drownings OR they are benevolent beings, passing out favors or responding to wishes of those they encounter. There have been sightings as recently as the last few years in Israel, Canada and Zimbabwe and of course they are depicted in opera, paintings, books, films and comics.
Legends of the half-fish, half-human creatures are found in many parts of the world including Brazil, where Revenge is set. Here they are commonly known as the Yara and are said to have green hair, can live in saltwater or fresh, and have the ability to help men live beneath the waves.
Our mermaid, Electra, has flowing red hair and a red tail. She able to move between salt and fresh water, but must must exit for an unspecified period, before she can change from one to the other. She can communicate with other aquatic mammals, but not with fish, reptiles of any of the other fascinating creatures under the sea. (No singing with lobsters as depicted in a favorite animated movie.) We can be sure that as the Valen stories grow, and new adventures are added, we will see Electra's powers grow as well and who knows maybe we'll meet a hunk of merman as well.
Hope to see you again soon. By the way, did you notice the new button on the right of the screen, "Follow me on Pinterest" I have reveal boards dedicated to the Valens, the Valens website the tattoos that represent the fates they inhabit. There is also one dedicated to RipHer and more with things that make me drool with desire, or tickle my funny bone.
