I am hooked

Love this review for Marriage before Death:

SherrieAC 5.0 out of 5 stars I am hookedJune 9, 2019
Format: Kindle EditionVerified Purchase This was such a surprisingly good book. Maybe it felt more real because I read it the week after D-Day. I suspect it happened for many soldiers. I liked Lenny and will enjoy reading more of the series although this novel can stand alone.

Escape is on my mind

Hazy, uncertain rays of dawn filter in through the ceiling-to-floor, wall-to-wall glass window of this Marriott Hotel Suite. At this early hour, the expansive view of Irvine is still dim, but even without light, luxury has the power to make you think you’re on top of the world. “Invincible,” says Vlad, mostly to himself. “That’s me!”At the sound of his voice, Betty comes in, wearing little more than her sweetest smile. “Invincible!” she chimes in. “That’s you!”He growls, “Have you no shame? Put something on, woman! My men are just about to come in, any moment now.”She picks up a silk robe, wraps herself in it, sways her hips as she circles my wheelchair, and smiles at him as if expecting a compliment, or at least a good word, which he doesn’t bring himself to give.Instead, Vlad leans closer to the glass and points out the smoke, swirling up from several private properties out there, in the most affluent parts of the city. “Well, well, well,” he says. “These mighty Americans, they can’t survive even a few hours without electricity. Their world-renowned success relies on something quite fragile.”“What’s that?”“Technology. So now—poof!—it’s gone! All because of me!”“You’ve done it, Vlad,” says Betty in her most flattering tone, while wheeling me into some dark space. At first I think it’s a closet, but once my eyes adjust I think I see a bed. On the other side of it hangs a heavy curtain, designed to block daylight.Turning to leave, she bangs the door behind her so it comes to a close. Almost. Now his voice comes somewhat muffled. “See? Out there!”She must be batting her eyelashes. “See what?”“With no heat in their homes, some of them resort to setting small fires in their own backyards and huddling around the flames.”“Wow, Vlad! I’m so impressed! This is totally like being in a time machine. You’ve taken this city back to the Middle Ages!”
I turn the wheelchair, get near the bedroom door, and kick it to a close, so as not to hear them anymore. On one hand, I’m delighted to be able to maneuver around the space. On the other, I’m sad. I miss my dog, Browny. I miss cuddling with him, throwing a stick for him to fetch, sinking my nose into his golden hair. Will I ever play with him again?Betty and Vlad are talking outside the bedroom. I need silence. I need to think. Escape is on my mind. The bedroom itself is quiet, if not for the sudden, startling sigh. “Stars,” says a voice.“Pa?” I ask.“Stars,” he says, in a slurred manner. “Everywhere.”Up to this moment, I’ve thought that seeing stars is nothing more than a form of speech, flowery at best—but for my Dad, they seem real. By his faint groans, he is watching them erupt in full sparkle, a result of being punched in his head by those aggressive Russian goons.Guided through the darkness by his voice, I wheel myself closer to Pa. He lies prostrate on the cover of the hotel bed, his hands still tied tightly with a rope behind him. I reach for his wrist, and just hold it for a while. If not for this touch, I would feel lost.I think about what has happened to him and to Ma. Wondering if she’s still alive, I am overcome by an overwhelming sense of grief—but then I figure, this is not the right time. Let me focus on what I can do at this moment for Pa.I fumble about till I manage—with a tremble in my fingers—to loosen his knot. Pa is barely moving, barely responding to my kiss on his forehead, where he has a large bump. He seems dizzy. Still, he may be aware of me, even if he can’t bring himself to show it. I know. Been there, done that, learned from experience. Underestimating someone just because he seems faint is a mistake. So now, I have something even bigger than before on my mind: an escape for two.

Do No Harm: Viable Hostage by @audreyjcole

The purr of the yacht’s idling engines was the only noise on the calm midnight water of Puget Sound. Until the garbage bag filled with Gretchen’s chopped-up body splashed into the sea. The man returned to the helm of the fifty-foot motor cruiser. He thrust the throttles forward. The vessel vibrated under his feet as the five-hundred-horsepower dual engines roared to life. He cruised forward before making a wide turn back to the city, careful not to run over the bag full of Gretchen’s remains as they sank to the bottom. He had two more bags to dump but thought it best not to sink them all in the same spot.He sped past the southern tip of Bainbridge Island and veered right toward Elliott Bay. There were faint lights in the distance from the large waterfront estates that bordered the densely wooded island. It would’ve been a tranquil scene if it weren’t for Gretchen’s dismembered corpse that filled the remaining trash bags on board. When his depth finder reached five hundred feet, he threw the boat into neutral. He hurried to the stern where two large black garbage bags rested against the side of the vessel. He grimaced slightly as he lifted the heavy bag over the edge. Another splash. He looked over the side and waited a moment for it to sink before returning to the helm. It wasn’t Gretchen’s death that bothered him. He couldn’t believe it had gone so wrong. After all that planning. All that work. For nothing. Gretchen had been the perfect subject. No one even missed her after she disappeared. He’d already been making plans for this kind of research before he’d learned of Gretchen’s unwanted pregnancy from a one-night stand. He had everything in place by the time her fetus got close to viability. Gretchen’s kidnapping had gone to a T. His research was about to begin. Until he screwed everything up.

I could almost bet that the author Uvi Poznansky had a brush with coma or with a patient in the hospital under an induced coma to come up with such an amazing idea for a story, especially that doctors do advise visitors to talk or read to the patient believing that it does help.
An excellent choice picking Heather Jane Hogan into narrating perfectly this story.
Together a beautiful audiobook was created !

This audiobook is a new genre for me and amazingly I’ve enjoyed it so much that I’ve listened twice to this audiobook making sure that I truly got it all and happy that I’ve done so.

I have absolutely no problem whatsoever recommending this audiobook to you all !!!

Our passion may continue to blossom on this page, even as we decline

At the bus station I look at her, surprised to discover something that I had not noticed before: a thin strand of silver running in and out through the shine, the red shine of her hair. In my eyes Natasha is beautiful, even though her figure seems more fragile than ever. Strong is what I need her to be. What we are facing now, I’m afraid, is a different kind of battle. Her doctor cannot be right. Can he? The only reason I’m taking her to that procedure is to rule out what he is considering, to prove him wrong. That word he used is trembling on my tongue. It is too tough for me to say, too painful to imagine. It cannot be true. I can’t let it! Any calamity will be better than that, even cancer, because that can, perhaps, be cured. Not so Alzheimer’s.Someone’s crying, and I think it’s me.In the distance I spot the bus. Turning to Natasha I say, softly, “Hold on to me, dear,” but I have no idea if she heard me, because a sudden gust of wind has stolen away my words. She smiles, leans her head against my shoulder. For the duration of the touch, everything around us seems to vanish, even my worries. I gather her gently into my arms, holding her like a breath.Instinctively Natasha nuzzles up to me.In a heartbeat I cup her face in my hands and there we stand, both of us in awe of the moment, kissing. Her lips are both sweet and salty. Then I whisper, “Hold me holding you.”And in my mind I add, You must, my love! Because if this disease, which I don’t even want to name, gets hold of you, then... Then, what will remain between us? What will I do but wonder, and be ashamed of myself for wondering: which one of us is about to stop living? Is it you or is it me?The most cherished thing you gave me, Natasha, the one I can still rescue for us, is this: our past. I should capture each moment, wrap it up—ever so carefully—in words, so our passion may continue to blossom on this page, even as we decline.

This is an extremely unique storyline about a woman named Ash who wakes up in a hospital and can't remember what happened. This is a scary because of how realistic it is. When she wakes up and struggles putting the pieces together only for the world to be falling apart around her. The book definitely contains a nice amount of suspense leaving you wanting more. The only real downside is I did not care for her taste in boyfriends. Definitely give this story read if you're looking for a medical crime mystery thriller. It will keep you on the edge of your seat until the end.You voted on this review!

Do No Harm: Fatal Limit by @IngeGoss

The late September drizzle turned into a downpour. Umbrellas knocked into each other as their owners pushed through the crowd to get into the best position to cross the street first when the light changed. A few teetered on the curb, ready to spring at a moment’s notice. Horns erupted in the rush-hour traffic. The drivers had no intention of slowing down despite the weather. A woman slipped on the wet sidewalk and grabbed the arm of the closest passerby to prevent her from falling on the hard cement. The stranger gave her an indignant sneer, pushed her hand away, and hurried to the bus shelter to get out of the rain. In the process, he bumped into me as I sat on the dry bench, watching the mayhem unfold. Without giving even a hint of an apology, he bent his head toward me. His steely gray eyes bore into me as if the whole incident was my fault.Ignoring him, but determined not to move closer to the edge of the bench to give him enough space to sit down, I gazed across the street, searching for Sheila, my best friend’s aunt, to emerge from the hospital. Her shift should have ended thirty minutes ago. I’d intended to wait in my car, but couldn’t find a parking spot with a view of the hospital’s employee entrance, so I’d parked in the lot behind the bus stop, walked to the bench to avoid the rain, and watched for her.More people poured into the bus shelter, blocking my view. I stood and peered between the heads of two women just as a bus cut to the curb. No longer able to see the other side of the street, I moved away from the horde of people, opened my umbrella, and headed toward the crosswalk. I saw Sheila emerge from the hospital and waved my hand in the air. With the rain and people scurrying about, I doubted she could see me in the crowd. Continuing along the sidewalk, I kept my eyes on Sheila and noticed she wasn’t wearing a raincoat or making any attempt to cover her head. That seemed odd. Her dripping wet hair clung to the top of her nurse’s uniform, and she was staggering, her body swaying with each step she took. Keeping her in my sights, I made my way to the crosswalk. Sheila stopped walking and looked back toward the hospital. A few seconds later, she swung around and moved in a zigzag path to the street. Sheila didn’t stop when she reached the curb. Standing on my side of the street, I screamed. “Stop!…Stop, Sheila!”A woman next to her gripped Sheila’s arm and said something to her.
Sheila violently pushed the woman away, sending the helpful stranger into the crowd behind her.
