A young rising-star ad executive, Michael Saleen, in Vancouver dies unexpectedly. The police think it’s just another “routine” auto accident, in spite of some odd findings. The executive’s wife feels otherwise. A friend of hers knows Wes Watley, an ex-Army CID officer and FBI SAC who has now started a private security company, if he’d be willing to investigate the death. Though Wes’ company normally focuses on national security and antiterrorism cases, his friend compels him to take on the case of Saleen’s death. Wes thinks it will be a quick, open-and-close case. Wes is joined by his tech-whiz partner, Cameron, and they soon discover more and more oddities about the case. As they dig further, they uncover something far more extensive and dire than just the unexpected death of Michael Saleen. That’s where I’m headed right now

After his new, youngish wife left him a couple of months ago for another man, my father fell into a dark mood. He drew away from his friends, because in his mind they must have been mocking him behind his back for losing her. He sat alone for days on end in the small apartment he had rented in Clearwater, Florida. There, he stared at the walls, giving in to depression. Soon enough, his health suffered a severe setback. His type II diabetes, which he had managed to hold at bay until then with diet, exercise, and an occasional pill, caught up with him.In spite of his stated wish to be left alone, Ma flew over to visit him and took charge of things. He accepted her presence grudgingly. Perhaps he felt guilty for having left such a dedicated woman, who was too damn perfect to live with. Perhaps he realized that at this point, he would flounder without her help. Upon her arrival, Ma tidied up the apartment, stocked his refrigerator with fresh fruits and vegetables, and cooked for him. Then, noting his deteriorated state of health, she took him to see a doctor, who diagnosed him with heart palpitations. He also recommended seeing a retina specialist. My dad had been complaining for a while about some distortion in his vision. Now we learned what had caused it: a membrane had been thickening over his retina, wrinkling it. This membrane was removed a day later in an emergency surgery called Pucker Operation.During my spring break, I flew over to see him. After the surgery, Pa was moodier than ever before. His vision had not to come back to normal yet, which stoked his fear of turning blind. Whenever he grumbled at her, Ma just pursed her lips and went on with the task at hand, be it putting on his socks for him, ordering his Glipizide and Metformin prescriptions, or leading him around his place so he wouldn’t bump, by accident, into corners or doorposts.Without her reminders, Pa would neglect to take his pills. So she packed a suitcase for him and in spite of his resistance, got flight tickets for both of them to go back to California, so he might stay in her home, “Until he’s back on his feet.” During the flight, my father said that his heart was acting up. That gave Ma a scare. As soon as they landed, she took him to the ER.And that’s where I’m headed right now.

Solve the mystery: Virtually Lace

His memory, he figured, was subjective. It was prone to error. By not relying only on it, perhaps he could identify some clue, some piece of evidence that had so far escaped his attention. He steadied his hand, and just as he aimed the camera at the victim, it broke apart. Its bottom mirror slipped out and was tossed into the water, just out of reach. And with it, sank the phone. Water rippled over its illuminated display. Then it went dark. Michael dived for it and came up for air, empty handed. He dived once again, to no avail. The thing was lost. His presence next to the body would raise more questions than he could answer, more suspicions than he could refute. His mistake, he realized, was not calling the police earlier, when he was still in possession of the smartphone. He prayed that it would not fall into the hands of others. That would be disastrous. It would identify his location and result in turning him into a prime suspect.Michael knew he was no good at being evasive. He was going to have to give his testimony sooner or later, no question about that. He opted for later. A gull glided down, planted a webbed foot on the body, hopped into the flooded armpit, and poked around once, twice, three times with its beak. Then it soared away, squawking. A ruffled feather started spinning around the mixture of seawater and blood, until—swoosh!—a wave came rising from behind. And just before it crushed down on him, something came into focus. Michael Morse remembered where he had seen this girl before. Her name was Lace.

Virtually Undead: a gripping techno thriller!

I'm thrilled to present the new multi-author series High-Tech Crime Solvers, and the new volume in it:

From USA Today Bestselling Author, Robert I. Katz, comes a gripping techno-thriller, part of a multi-author series tied together by an interlocking cast of characters, all centered around the fantastic new promise of high technology and the endless possibilities for crime that technology offers, in a world where getting away with murder can be not only plausible, but easy…if you just know how.

Michael Foreman is a neurosurgeon, hard-working, successful and highly respected. In his spare time, he plays the piano.

Ralph Guthrie is a gamer. He makes his living playing online games. He also plays the clarinet. Ralph Guthrie and Michael Foreman are old friends and play together in an amateur jazz band.

But when Ralph is invited to play and critique a new video game, Virtually Undead, and suffers a fatal heart attack, along with nine other players, it quickly becomes apparent that virtual reality has reached out of the virtual world and into the real.

Why has a gas explosion rocked the city? Why has the New York sewer system repeatedly expelled raw sewage into the city’s waterways? And why does a single traffic light downtown persistently malfunction, causing cars to repeatedly crash?

Are all these things tied together? If so, how and why?

When the NYPD and the FBI ask Michael Foreman to consult, he can’t resist the challenge, and finds himself quickly drawn into the escalating mayhem of a video game that’s becoming all too real.
