Then he stormed towards me and backhanded me across my face with an armored hand. Metal smashed into my jaw, and my neck snapped so hard to the side I heard it crack. I was frozen in shock more than pain. The stones on this guy were unfathomable. He knew who I was! And I was really tired of not being seen as a threat.

I slowly looked back at him and then head-butted him square in his already injured nose. Blood exploded from the bandage as he staggered backward. Trembling with rage, I pulled my body weight up my chains again, and with a growl, wrapped my legs around his neck, squeezing his throat hard.

“Guards! Guards!” Kepfern screamed.

I looked down at Glugnus and watched with immense satisfaction as he choked. I summoned my magic and allowed my eyes to turn glowing white. “Are you quite done testing me, Glugnus?” I said in a very dangerous, calm tone. “Hmm?”

I looked down at him for another few moments, watching his life slip away before I heard the guards coming. I dismissed my magic but didn’t release Glugnus until the entourage came in, armed with spears, and surrounded me. I untangled my legs from him and lowered my feet back to the floor. Glugnus stumbled out the door into the hallway, gasping and coughing. The guards carefully slunk away from me back into the hallway as I watched Glugnus disappear around the corner. Whatever strength that had been in me evaporated that moment. My knees collapsed, and the world went black just as the cell door closed.

The Write Pet: A Cavalier King Charles Spaniel by Beth Caudill #amwriting #Paranormal #Romance

Write_Pet_2015 - 500

The Animal Rescue Site

Growing up, I lived in college apartment housing. We had little space, so my first pets were guppies. They swam in an aquarium in the corner of the living room. Not very interesting. I think I had more fun imagining adventures with my stuffed animals.

But my godparents had a Springer Spaniel named Gretchen. I loved playing with her when we’d visit on holidays. So after we finally moved into a house, I asked for my own dog. We went to a dog show in Pittsburg, PA to get an idea of the type of dog we wanted. We each wrote our top three candidates on a piece of paper.

Eventually my parents and I decided on a Keeshond we named Cupcake. She treated me like a sister because my mom ended up taking her out and feeding her. But one time we took her to a lake and when I went swimming, she came out to get me and drag me back to shore. Apparently I wasn’t supposed to be swimming.

Her normally puffy gray, black and white fur was wet and plastered to her body. She looked like a drowned rat. It’s one of my favorite memories of her. Cupcake died a few months before I graduated college. I think because I’d been away the few years before she died, that her death didn’t affect me as much as parents.

Fast forward thirteen years and I started getting antsy about having a dog again. The stray cat my husband had adopted before we met died. I always thought I loved all types of animals but not after that cat. I am definitely a dog person. Both kids were in school and I thought they were ready to help with having a pet.

I know the thing to do is go to the SPCA and adopt a stray, but I have two special needs kids. While I appreciate the work the SPCA does, I didn’t think a stray was right for my kids. My ADHD son is very energetic in how he plays and the autistic son is very reluctant to be near animals. With a stray, you have no idea how their temperament will expose itself. I thought a calm pure breed was best for our family.

After lots of research, my husband and I decided on a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. CavalierFaceThey are very loving animals and best of all calm. I especially liked the cuddle aspect of their personality and hoped it would help with some self-worth issues our ADHD son had. I’m still a stay-at-home-mom and in fact am now homeschooling both kids, so the breed’s need for companionship isn’t an issue for our family.

Megan is the best dog. Nothing the kids do fazes her and she is constantly showering them with happy licks and doggie tail waving. During the day if I’m writing on the coach, she’ll curl up next to me and lay against my leg. Otherwise when I’m at my desk, she will either stay with one of the kids or curl up at my feet.

Inspiration wise, I love to write shifter stories and include pets. While werewolves are a favorite, I think I have more unfinished shifter stories than completed. In Assassin’s Soul, I included a large snow cat as a pet. And in an unfinished Faery story, I have a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel as a pet in the human world but she becomes a hellhound in the fae world. That is my favorite pet character because it shows both sides of Megan. The soft cuddly side and the ferocious barker who goes after any dog walking near our property, even if the animal is twice her size.

Excerpt:

Liam couldn’t watch the ceremony that would mate Corliss to someone else. He could’ve challenged for her, but that meant fighting his father—the ruling wolf, who was neither a tyrant nor senile. Both of them in their prime, a fight would have ended in one of their deaths, and he couldn’t justify the loss of life.

Not even for her. Unable to keep control of his wolf, Liam shifted to animal form and sought solace in the forest. Except every tree, every fragrance roused memories of her, and the wolf sprinted towards the ceremonial clearing. His paws swiftly traversed the distance until he scented the woman who should be his.

Stark quiet alerted him to trouble as the wolf crept along the edge of the grass. People were missing and those who remained stood as if waiting for the ceremony to start. He circled around to the front to get a better view, hiding in the shadows so as not to alert anyone. Raymond was unaccounted for. Corliss stood stiff-backed, facing away from the audience.

Her caramel-colored hair was piled atop her head, darkened to walnut in the moonlight. Shadows hid her sea-green eyes and emphasized her high cheekbones. She appeared cold, harsh, and removed from events going on around her. Yet he knew her to be warm and caring, often too caring.

Through her healing powers, she gave more of her personal energy than she should. As her friend, he could offer support, but he couldn’t push too hard for her to rest, or she’d rip out his throat.

He chuffed. The dark green specks in her eyes glowed when she was angry. That spark had been missing from her eyes for days. He repressed a growl as Corliss bit the inside of her cheek. Before the wind shifted, he backed away. She wouldn’t appreciate anyone seeing her close to tears.

The wolf wanted to rip a hole in Raymond’s belly, but even their animals had rules for a challenge. He trotted to a cache of clothes. Only the human half of his soul could help her now.

Bio:

Author, Renee Charles believes all love is legendary. Being the only female in a house full of giants (husband and two teenage boys) she tends to lean toward the macabre, but inevitably the softer side shines through.

Whether life leads her to a snow covered mountain top, sun dappled forest, or the bottom of a ravine (yes, ditches happen) she always has a pen and note pad ready so wherever the next adventure takes her, she can take notes.

Her own romance began in an insane asylum. Luckily, both she and her husband only worked there. But it makes sense her romance novels have strange beginnings that lead to passionate endings. Romance with a twist.

In the face of zombies, werewolves, and big foot she always seems to find a happily ever after to leave you with a sigh at the end.

PLATINUM PLEASURES by Kate Deveaux #EroticRomance #Giveaway

MBB_TourBanner_PlatinumPleasures copy

One night…one fantasy for hire…one sizzling case of mistaken identity.

Ainsley Simmons can hardly believe she’s ordered a fantasy lover online — a man to fulfill her deepest sexual desires for the entire evening. She’s in for a surprise when sexy young Mr. R shows up at her door in a classic case of mistaken identity.

Ainsley has the night of her life being pleasured by the much younger and demanding multi-millionaire — until she discovers he’s not her fantasy lover after all.

He’s even better than that…

Excerpt:

Ainsley’s doorbell chimed again. Oh goodie. She clasped her hands together and shivered with anticipation. Whoever her mystery man was, he was back—and she was ready to play.

Standing tall, holding in her stomach in and smiling widely, she braced herself for what lay ahead as she headed for the foyer. She was intrigued by whether anyone would be there or not this time. Maybe it was some kind of hide and seek. Kinky hide and seek, she hoped.

Her hand trembled on the knob as she opened her front door.

“Oh,” she said, surprised to see a man holding a large box of chocolates out to her. A very good looking younger man with intense blue eyes. Good, she’d asked for that. So far…so good.

“Chocolates,” she purred, eyeing the trademark famous wrapping. “I love chocolate, especially Swiss.”

Casting her eyes up, she surveyed the hunk before her. Suit and tie. Umm. Not quite what she’d been expecting, but then what did someone who came to fulfil your deepest sexual desires wear? They couldn’t very well parade around in their undies. Embarrassed, she glanced down at her mostly naked self then back up at her guest. His vivid blue eyes were glued to her body, his mouth agape.

“Oh, do come in,” she said, flattered that his gaze lingered on her as she held the door wide for him to enter.

“Uh…uhhh,” he said after a pause, stepping cautiously across the threshold and into the marble foyer.

Damn, he was undeniably sexy, just what she’d asked for. And oh so young, what was he, twenty-five, if that? And that look on his face…he looked confused, as if unsure. Well she’d be only too happy to kiss that look right off him. Oh, this was going to be fun.

“Miss Simmons?” he asked, shifting uncomfortably.
She pressed a finger across his lips to silence him.
“Ah, no names, the company said so, remember?” she said, not removing her finger.

“Call me…Mrs M.” She’d never been married, even though she’d lived with Charles for more years than proved wise. The very thought of going by a pseudonym sent an empowering thrill through her. Very Mrs Robinson, if she did say so herself.

“Mrs M,” he said, stepping back. Her finger fell from his lips. “I came to deliver”—he reached into his pocket as if looking for something—“to deliver… Damn,” he said, still searching for something.

“Later.” She was in no mood for any paperwork. It would just ruin the mood. As nervous as she was, now that her fantasy lover was there before her, she could barely wait for him to take control so she could just relax and be pleasured. Just as the Fantasies Incorporated’s website promised.

But he just stood there.

She waited, wondering if he was going to take charge soon. He didn’t make a move and she was nervous. Maybe she was supposed to make the first gesture? After all, she was the customer.

“Come…follow me,” she said, deciding she’d better make the first gesture. Leading the way through her cream and gold upholstered expanse of a living room, she stopped midway, sensing he wasn’t following. Glancing back, she saw he still stood in her wide front entrance.

“Well, come on,” she prompted, taking the moment to admire his sandy blond hair with the jagged edges that brushed just below his ears. She loved it when these young men wore their hair a little dishevelled and longer like he did. She couldn’t wait to tangle her fingers through it while he pleasured her. Fucked her. Her cheeks flamed hot at the thought.

Her fantasy man smiled, almost shyly, his brow arching slightly. A cocky look, if ever she’d seen one. What a turn on that was, he must be playing into this whole Mrs Robinson theme. He nodded and stepped out of her foyer and into her home, following her to the opulent living room. Her body surged with anticipation. This was going to be the best Valentine’s present ever. Glancing back, she saw his eyes were riveted to her ass. She grew wet at the thought.

“I was expecting you.” She filled the silence with a nervous laugh as she stopped at the well-stocked bar on the far side of the room. The silver ice bucket gleamed with condensation, and the two crystal flutes she’d set beside it shimmered against the setting sun. Beyond their refreshments was one of the best views in Beverly Hills.

“You were?” He gulped, his Adam’s apple showing as he swallowed.

She nodded. “I have champagne chilling…you do drink champagne, don’t you?” she inquired. Not waiting for the answer, she pulled the chilled bottle from the ice bucket. Slow droplets of condensation dripped onto the marble floor. “Here, you uncork it, I’m hopeless at it.” She handed him the bottle and sat down one of her bar stools, almost sliding off in her silky peignoir.

He smiled and loosened his tie. Oh, yum. He caught her gaze and he blushed. Fuck—did he really just blush? Oh, he played the Mrs Robinson thing better than she could have imagined.

Battle Cry receives a 5 star review from Long and Short Reviews

5 Star Rating LASRBattle Cry received a wonderful 5 Star review from Long and Short Reviews on Feb. 2, 2015. I was given the cool blue banner to display, but I’m more thrilled to be able to share the wonderful review with you.

Victoria Storm, an alpha she-wolf, has tried to build a new life for her pack, but events quickly transpire that threaten not only her small decimated pack, but indeed the entire mortal world. If that weren’t enough, the Norse Fates predict that she will destroy the world in her attempt to save her daughter, as yet unborn. Worse than that, she suddenly finds herself in conflict between her duties as Freya’s priestess and her responsibilities as Odin’s Valkyrie.

Victoria is a very strong protagonist with a good heart. She’s well aware of the fact that there are no males in her pack and both that fact and the size of the pack make them all very vulnerable. She has a connection to the Hunters, but at the moment the alliance between the Hunters and the wolves has been broken because the head of the hunters, Jake Barrett, holds the wolves responsible for the death of one of his sons.

As Victoria and Jake try to sort out the truth of the past raids and also fight a horde of vampires, the reality of the situation begins to reveal itself. This novel makes brilliant use of the Norse gods and Norse mythology. The fact that the gods are involved, particularly Loki, adds a real depth to this plot. Both Victoria and Jake know what is prophesied, but will that be more apt to happen if they act? Or if they don’t act? There are tough decisions to be made, but one thing is certain. If the Hunters and wolves can’t re-establish their treaty and learn to work together, everyone will be destroyed.

This is the second novel in the series, but it can stand alone. I have read Hunger Moon, the first novel, and I do recommend reading them in order, but there is plenty of backstory woven into this one, so that new readers will be able to enjoy Battle Cry in all its excitement. The characters are well drawn and the plot is filled with action. It ends at a reasonable stopping point, as the stage is set for the next in the series. I hope the saga continues soon.

Fantasy lovers are in for a real treat when they read Battle Cry.

Excerpt:

From Ryan’s point of view:

Damn, she had a pretty smile. Hell, she was pretty, period. Lola’s smooth-looking skin was a shade darker than his natural tone, and she had these eyebrows that arched in a way that could stop a man dead in his tracks. Once he’d finally seen her in some natural light, he realized those eyebrows of hers spoke volumes even if she remained silent. There was the quick lift of one brow that said, ‘Really? You’re an asshole.’ Vlad had been on the receiving end of that one.

Then again, she’d raised that same brow before when he’d started stripping down to swim across the marsh. He’d told himself that raised brow was more out of interest than, ‘You’re an asshole.’ He’d been wrong about what women thought before, though, and probably shouldn’t put much thought into a simple eyebrow raise. But he couldn’t discount Lola’s eyes. They were…exotic. Was that the right word? A home-grown Florida boy, born and raised in the Everglades, the closest he’d come to exotic were the snakes he and his brother had found when they’d explored the Glades as kids.

Whatever the word, exotic had popped into his mind. Lola’s eyes weren’t a true brown, but a hypnotic shade of golden-brown with flecks of blue.

And absolutely beautiful.

Short Fiction is My Passion by Lynn Cooper #amwriting #Giveaway

The author is sponsoring a giveaway for 5 Kindle (Mobi) copies of Calling Doctor Feel Good. Winners will be randomly chosen from comments. Please leave a comment with your email address for a chance to win.

I think one of the most common questions a writer gets asked is “Why do you write?” I’ve answered in many different ways depending on who was asking. But the basic truth of my response is always the same. I write because I love telling stories, specifically those of the steamy romance genre. I can’t think of anything more fulfilling than creating memorable characters in spicy situations from nothing more than my imagination. I specialize in short fiction. It’s my passion. I often categorize my publications as “30-minute Romance Reads” or “Lunch Break Romance”—think a sandwich with a side of sexy prose. But my short reads aren’t just for lunch; they’re perfect for the bus or train ride home. They’re a wonderful distraction while in the waiting room of a doctor’s office. They’re absolutely decadent while soaking in a nice, relaxing bubble bath. And they make perfect adult bedtime stories. When my steamy romance is read aloud to a spouse or significant other, sleep will magically take a back seat.

In today’s hustle and bustle world, I find it more and more enjoyable to read shorter fiction. When I’m feeling overwhelmed by my hectic schedule—and, who doesn’t have one of those?—the last thing I want to do is feel overwhelmed by a book the size of War and Peace. I love the idea of being able to lose myself in a guiltless 30-45 minute read. It gives me the best of both worlds. I can keep charging through life while still having time to recharge my battery over a hot, delicious romance.  I believe that there are many women who feel exactly as I do. And it is my pleasure to entertain them with my sexy short stories and novellas.

I work hard to create full-bodied story lines and well-developed, relatable characters, making sure that my short reads pack a powerful punch. Through fast-paced, tight writing, fleshed out with just enough background, I am able to give my readers a full-length novel experience in a compact package. I take a great deal of pride in providing a temporary respite that can be enjoyed in a timely fashion for those who need it most. I am moved beyond words when something I create offers someone a means of escape from reality even if it’s only for a little while. Today’s woman is juggling it all. She needs those literary mini-vacations to balance out her day. It is my goal to bring her heart-pumping, steamy romance that easily fits into her busy lifestyle.

Dominant Seduction: The Complete Series combines three intense and romantic volumes: Discipline and Desire, Demanding Desires and Dominating Delights. This book is one of my best sellers. I hope you’ll take a look.

She is determined to do whatever it takes to convince him to explore the enticing, seductive side of domination and submission. Come join them on a heart-stopping ride to carnal bliss.

Excerpt: (Explicit)

Checking her look in the mirror, she was pleased. The reflection staring back at her was a woman glowing with desire and anticipation. Wavy, long, brown hair cascaded over her statuesque shoulders. Firm breasts, tapered waist, full hips and shapely legs all fit together to form a perfect portrait of sensuality. Her hand fluttered over her chest as she tried to take a calming breath. The last thing she wanted to do was hyperventilate.

She was inhaling slowly and deeply when she heard Brett’s car coming down the drive. On unsteady legs, she walked to the kitchen door leading to the garage. She just stood there as he cut the engine, her mouth going dry and her palms getting sweaty.

The car door slammed shut while her heart slammed against her ribcage. Every muscle in her body grew taut, and she was unable to move when she heard Brett insert his key into the door knob. Her breathing quickened and her eyes grew wide as she watched the knob turn and the door open.

With a devilish grin playing at the corner of his mouth, Brett said, “Daddy’s home.”

Karen bit her bottom lip. Her eyes soaked in the sight of her Master. He had obviously showered at the dojo, and in lieu of his gi he now wore snug Levis and a black-as-coal T-shirt. He looked edgy but relaxed. Karen couldn’t find her voice.

“What’s wrong, baby girl? Cat got your tongue?”

“No. I—l—”

“You what?” he asked, advancing on her. Desire filled his grey eyes, turning them several shades darker.

Karen put her hands behind her as she backed slowly away from him. Just a few steps more and her backside was flush against the refrigerator.

“I’m happy to see you,” she said nervously. “That’s all.”

Brett planted his big hands against the rectangular appliance on either side of her head. She could feel the heat from his breath caressing her cheek. She was dying to have his hands on her.

“Before I touch you, we need to decide on a safe word.”

Karen shook her head. “Don’t be silly. We don’t need one.”

Brett furrowed his brow and clenched his jaw. “I say we do. I need to know that if things get too rough—if I get too rough—you have a built-in safety net. This is not optional. Now pick a damn word.”

Karen only hesitated for a few moments. It was obvious to her that not having a safe word would be a deal breaker for her husband. If she wanted him to engage in dominate sex play, she would have to play by his rules.

“Peaches.”

The tension in Brett’s jaw slackened, and a smile crinkled his eyes. “You do love peaches. That’s a perfect safe word. Good girl.”

Karen smiled and wrapped her arms around his waist.

He nuzzled her neck and whispered in her ear, “I believe I owe you a spanking.”

She shivered. He took her dainty hand in his and led her into the living room. He sat down on their over-stuffed sofa and motioned for her to lie facedown across his lap.

She could barely contain herself as she complied with his demand. With her arms resting on either side of her head, her face luxuriated in the soft fabric of the cushion. Her butt was propped up in the air as she anxiously awaited her punishment. Her heart actually skipped a beat in anticipation as her Master placed one hand firmly on the nape of her neck and, with the other, gently massaged the back of her thighs.

“Just relax, baby girl.”

His hands felt so warm and soothing. She moaned as her very bones melted under his masterful touch. The moment she became fully subdued, she felt his fingertips slide beneath her mini-skirt. Her pulse spiked, and she gasped.

He was pushing her skirt up to the top of her hips, revealing her firm, round, lace-pantied ass. His large hand covered both cheeks at the same time as he firmly kneaded her flesh. He continued caressing her through her panties until she was panting with want.

“Please, Brett.”

“Uh-oh, I’m afraid that’s going to earn you an extra smack on that sweet bottom.”

Shit! She silently reprimanded herself. She was supposed to call him Master or Daddy. Very quickly she made amends. “I’m sorry, Master. It won’t happen again.”

Brett chuckled. “I know it won’t,” he said as he pulled down her panties to reveal the creamy, flawless flesh of her ass. She tried to lift her head, but he firmly held it against the cushion, raised his other hand and delivered the first slap.

The Write Pet: The Story of Aaron from Alabama by Jeanine McAdam #amwriting

Write_Pet_2015 - 500

The Animal Rescue Site

IMG_0727Four years ago our chocolate Labrador Aaron came to us via a Rescue Road Trips truck from the Deep South. Aaron had been found abandoned in the town of Gordo, Alabama. There was talk of the sheriff shooting him because Gordo is poor and does not have any animal control facilities.

Thankfully a wonderful group of animal rights activists were able to catch Aaron before the sheriff got him. Unfortunately when they found Aaron his entire backside was bare of hair from flea and tick bites, plus he had heartworm and he was unneutered.

Lucky for Aaron the folks from Labs 4 Rescue came to his aid. He moved in with a wonderful woman named Kristy and her seven other foster dogs. Before long Aaron was healing and sleeping in Kristy’s bed. Even though he had a rough start Aaron was not a tough dog. Sweet and loving with a need to be petted regularly was Aaron’s disposition.

After Aaron completely healed he was made available for adoption on the Labs 4 Rescue web site. My husband found him and it was love at first sight for us. Without meeting Aaron he was shipped North to us through Rescue Road Trips. During the two-day journey volunteers walked him and posted pictures of him on Facebook. When the eighteen-wheeler full of rescued dogs (plus a few cats) crossed the Mason-Dixon line the driver posted “Free at Last”. On a cold February morning we met the truck at a parking lot in Rockland County.

IMG_1016First the little dogs came off and then it was the medium sized dogs. As we waited watching families greet their pets we got more anxious wondering what our seventy-pound Aaron was going to be like.   Finally, with his legs going every which way and a roll in his back, Aaron came off the truck. Besides being freaked out about his new environment he was thirsty, hungry and ready to be loved by his ‘forever family’.

Because we had such a great experience with Aaron and he fit into our family perfectly we adopted Desi (Desdemona) from a kill shelter in Georgia two years later. She loves Aaron just a much as we do and he never grows tired of getting licked (kissed) by her. Every night I watch my two ‘rescue’ dogs curl up in their bed together and I’m thankful they are apart of our family.

Sexy bull rider Caleb Cooper keeps falling off his bull and hitting his head. Smart neuroscience graduate student Carrie Wang is studying him. There’s just one problem, Carrie’s attracted to her broad-shouldered research subject. But she shouldn’t be, because Carrie is pregnant with Charles Winston’s baby. However, that one-night-stand occurred in a beaker closet and Charles wants nothing to do with her or the child.

Besides being handsome in a long-haired, scruffy sort-of-way, Caleb Cooper is kind and quirky. Carrie can’t stop touching him and their unprofessional attraction is mutual. Problems abound when Carrie’s traditional Chinese mother and Charles come to the rodeo. Carrie’s mother wants her to hook a husband and Charles wants Carrie to give the baby up for adoption. Carrie knows she could never let a stranger raise her child. Can Carrie go against everyone’s wishes and raise the baby on her own? Or could Caleb become a father to this child?

The Write Pet: A Dog and a Cat by Ashley York #amwriting

Write_Pet_2015 - 500

The Animal Rescue Site

My animal companion is actually not one but two! A dog and a cat!

We’ve always had dogs in our family. My yellow lab of fourteen years got sick very fast and we had to put her down. It took me two years to get over the loss and decide I was ready for another dog. We’ve also always had cats but it had been awhile since we’d had a kitten. Our first cat was black so I was hoping to find one like him. When I found them both, I couldn’t pass up on either. I would never recommend anyone getting both at the same time. They are very good friends but I think it taught the dog how to be a nipper and it taught the cat to immediately respond with claws. Anyway I love them both very much and here’s their story.

We got our little black kitten from a dear friend, Sarah. It was the only boy in the litter! SeumasThe day I went to pick him up, two of his sisters had already “disappeared” but the kitten seemed happy enough…until I got him in the car. I was alone so I had to put him in the crate which he was fine with but as soon as I got on the highway, it seemed to hit him that the other kittens weren’t around. He started attacking the cage door, shrieking and meowing, biting at it with his teeth. This went on for the whole twenty minute ride. I have never seen any cat act like this. It was not the car or the cage, it was separation. I was ready to call Sarah and tell her I couldn’t keep him. He was acting wild.

A total transformation took place when he was in the house. Within a half an hour, he had already claimed us as his. He was sleeping on my leg, purring, totally loving and not at all crazed. Luckily, we’ve never seen that side of him again. He had a happy, solitary life for a week, extremely loving and responsive every time I used the momma cat “mew” on him. We were totally bonded.

When I first met the Labrador, I fell in love. We visited her every week. She’s so sweet. CallieHer eyes are always asking me what I would like her to do. She was ready to come home a week after the kitten joined us. Callie, the puppy, was very excited to find a litter mate at our house and just loved him. She’d just left six brothers and sisters and thought the kitten was a wonderful replacement. Seumas (the cat) learned quickly that Callie had impulse control issues and would never stop being in his face. They’re good friends and still play nicely together but I think Seumas is a little less tolerant because of Callie.

On a good writing day, I have visits from both. Callie will bound up the stairs. Bounding so much that I can’t walk up the stairs at the same time or she’ll knock me over. Seumas enjoys just sleeping in his chair (it’s not really his chair but don’t tell him). He comes in so quietly that I don’t always notice but when I get up, there he is. He’s not overly affectionate. If he ever finds himself putting his head down on me, he quickly picks it up as if to say “No, I wasn’t doing that.” I hope his personality is still evolving because he is just the sweetest when he’s not being Mr. Independent. When the words are having a hard time getting out, or when I have an emotionally draining scene to write, it’s very nice to have both pets right there to stroke and scratch.

EXCERPT:

Iseabail dared not take her eyes off him even as he doffed his tunic. She should have turned away from the sight of his near-naked flesh, should have been intimidated by the sheer size of the man. Instead, all she could think of was how well he was made. As if he had been carved out of stone, in perfect proportion. Any excess flesh chipped away until all that was left was this—a strong broad chest narrowing into the rippling planes of his stomach.

She exhaled loudly, but he did not seem to notice. Had she actually been holding her breath? At the sight of him? She had seen men without their shirts before, in the practice yard at home, but none had looked as good. She forced herself to stop admiring him, but not before she noticed how his long, wavy hair caressed his shoulders.

Stop being ridiculous.

She was totally at this man’s mercy…

“Methinks ye wish to place a curse on me with that look of yours… What is yer name?”

Though she jumped at the sound of his voice, she could not help watching as he poured water from a pitcher to a bowl sitting on the table beside the fire. Mesmerized by the motion and play of firelight over his expansive chest, she did not notice right away when he stopped his movements. She met his eyes. Her heart beat faster and that strange heat centered in her belly again.

He quirked a brow. “I asked ye a question and I expect an answer…or do ye not know how to act with yer betters?”

Her better? Though she seethed inside, Iseabail bit her tongue before she gave herself away. If he but knew how much land her clan called their own…

Nay, Iseabail. Remember the part you play here.

Lowering her eyes, she quietly answered him. “Forgive me, m’lord. I forget myself.” Unsure what else the charade called for, she curtseyed slightly.

“Yer name?” He still didn’t move. His brows were raised in expectation yet again.

“My name is Iseabail.”

He nodded, apparently appeased. “And my name is Seumas.”

His face settled into a slight smile, and he continued with his washing. His muscles flexed as he rubbed across his chest and down his arms, scrubbing the soap into lather then rinsing it clean until his skin glistened. When he finished, he reached for the cloth beside him but turned his face to her.

She exhaled slowly.

“Come here, Iseabail.”

His tone was coaxing, as if to a newly harnessed foal. She took the few steps toward him. When he reached for her face, she tensed and her mouth went dry. He was no better than her uncle, after all, and disappointment washed over her. She glanced down, steeling herself for the imminent assault, before facing him. His hand stopped just short of her face. Their eyes met, and she could tell he was insulted by his tight lips and furrowed brow.

He wiped her cheek with a wet finger. “Ye’re filthy,” he said with disgust. “Make use of my water, and be quick about it.” Seumas walked away, rubbing his hands dry.
