Karen’s Killer Fixin’s: Mini-Crabcakes
It’s time for Karen’s Killer Fixin’s! Over the years, I’ve filled two 4-inch, 3-ring binders with my own creations as well as recipes my family and friends were willing to share with me. I simply love to cook and want to share that love with my readers. So every Friday, I share one recipe I think you and your family might enjoy. It might be a main course recipe. A cookie or baked item. Candy. Salads. Whatever strikes my eye and fancy…which today is MINI-CRABCAKES!
One of the things I love about the holidays are all of the special recipes family and friends pull out for those holiday meals and parties. A lot of seafood goes on sale at this time of the year, too. I love seafood of all kinds, especially crabcakes. Today’s recipe is something you can make quickly for your guests, a taste of the sea and a nice complement to other party dishes.

MINI-CRABCAKES
[Makes 24 mini-crabcakes]
1 lb. fresh or pkg. crabmeat
½ sweet red pepper, finely diced
3 scallions, chopped
2 eggs
1/3 cup mayonnaise
½ tsp. salt
¼ tsp. black pepper
¼ tsp. dried tarragon, crumbled
1 cup yellow cornmeal
6 T. vegetable oil
Remoulade, recipe follows
Pick through crabmeat to remove shell or cartilage. Stir in red pepper, scallion, eggs, mayonnaise, salt, pepper and tarragon. Add ½ cup of the cornmeal; place remaining cornmeal in small bowl. Let mixture rest 10 minutes. Using 2 T. mixture for each, form 24 2-inch crab cake patties. Shape with your hands, then coat patties with remaining cornmeal. Heat 3 T. of the oil in large skillet over med-med/high heat. Cook 12 of the crab cakes for 3 minutes. Flip over; continue to cook an additional 3 minutes. Repeat with remaining 3 T. oil and remaining 12 crab cakes. Place on paper towels before serving with remoulade.
Remoulade: Stir together ½ cup mayonnaise, 1 T. chopped capers, 1 T. fresh lemon juice, 2 tsp. pickle relish, 2 tsp. sugar and a dash of hot-pepper sauce.

“Execution?” I pulled on the restraints that held me to the table in the processing room in a futile act of panic. “No. They can’t kill him.”
Warden Egara’s smile was sad. “I’m afraid that is the Atlan way. Once a male is lost to the mating fever, there is no redemption.”
“But he has a mate! Me! I can redeem him, save him. Whatever,” I pleaded with her. There had to be some kind of mistake. This couldn’t be happening. I had a guy who wanted me and he was set to be executed? I think not. “Send me there. The protocol matched us. Officially, by alien law, he’s mine. Isn’t that correct? I am already his mate. Doesn’t that grant me some kind of rights? I have the right to see him. I demand to see him.”
Her eyebrows lifted into severe arcs as she considered me long and hard. She looked over her shoulder and spoke. “Can you hear her, Sarah?” The warden nodded her head, listening. She was having a conversation with someone on the far side of the universe. If I wasn’t in a processing center, I’d think she was crazy. Especially since I couldn’t understand a thing the woman was saying. Her voice was too faint, and all I could hear was the pounding of my rage in my ears. “And what if something goes wrong?”
A deep, rumbling voice came through the speaker then, much louder and more commanding. It reminded me of the voice from my vision and a shiver of rekindled need raced across my skin. “There’s no room for mistakes. If she comes to us, she must have the courage to see it through. Should she fail, he dies,” the voice boomed, startling me.
Warden Egara turned to me and I hardened my resolve. No one, and I mean no one, was stealing this from me. “I won’t fail. He’s mine.”
The warden nodded, turning back to the screen, to the large Atlan male I could hear but not see. “I believe her, Warlord. I think we should give her a chance to save him.”
“Very well. I’m not prepared to give up on the commander. Send her to us. We will get her in to see him.”
Warden Egara actually bowed her head before responding, as if she were speaking to royalty or something. “As you wish, Warlord Dax. If you have transport codes, I will initiate her transport now.”
“They should be arriving at any moment.”
Even as he spoke, the bright blue lights behind me began to flash and brighten and my chair jerked into motion. “What’s happening?”
“Received. Thank you. The commander’s mate is on her way.” Warden Egara ended her call and walked toward me with a sad smile on her face. “Good luck, Tiffani. I am sending you to Warlord Dax and his mate, Sarah. She is from Earth and recently matched. They will help you break in to see your mate.”
That didn’t sound good. Unlawful. Dangerous.
“Break in? Why would I have to break in?”
“He’s in Atlan prison, dear. On death row, as we call it. And you are not an Atlan female, or a member of his family.”
That made no sense. He’d committed no crime other than having his own genetic nature take its course. But I would be committing a crime to see him? I was the one who would be breaking the laws?
“But I’m his mate. And you said I would be a citizen of Atlan now, no longer a citizen of Earth. I should be allowed to see him. I shouldn’t have to break in anywhere.”
She nodded. “Very true, but rules are rules. And only Atlan females are allowed into the containment facilities. Good luck. I hope your attempts are enough to save you both.” She checked her tablet once more and I had a flash of déjà vu as she lifted her head and spoke. “When you wake, you will be on Atlan. Your processing will begin in three… two…”
I tensed, waiting for that last word and wondering what the hell I had just gotten myself into. Breaking into prison? Death row? An alien mate in Beast Mode? Holy crap.
“One.”

“Oh my God the way this guy IMs, I may need to buy stock in D batteries,” Mandy said as she and Sarah walked through the displays at the Ramsey County fairgrounds. “I’m thinking of flying out to Arizona next month, what do you think?”
Six months had passed since Mandy moved in, and Sarah had to admit living with her was entertaining.
“Is the goal of this excursion to be bound and gagged—”
“Yes please.” Mandy jumped up and down while clapping her hands.
“I wasn’t done,” Sarah grumbled. “Raped and dropped into a shallow unmarked grave?”
“Why are you ck blocking me?”
“Why can’t the mystery man come to you?”
“I’m sure he could, but then he’d have to research the best places in the Twin Cities to dump a body.”
“I can see why he’s hesitant.”
“Exactly.”
“For all you know he could be a sixty-year-old woman with a hankering for messing with young hotties.”
“Aww, you’re so sweet. Speaking of sweet, I need to get my funnel cake on.”
Sarah shook her head as they headed closer to the rides where the food was, when a woman in red caught her eye. Saying that she stood out would be an understatement. This was a county fair where most people looked like she and Mandy did—hair half falling out of a ponytail, t-shirt clinging to the body from sweat, and shorts. Not Representative Karen Schroeder. Her auburn hair was pulled into a perfect French twist, and even though it was ninety-seven degrees, with humidity that made the air cling to everyone’s skin, Karen Schroeder wasn’t even sweating.
“Oh no, if I can’t date a serial killer, you can’t date a straight Republican,” Mandy shook Sarah from her trance. “Unless you think she’s family, just hiding out?”
“What do you know of family? You’re barely a step-sister that only comes over on the holidays to eat.”
“Because I don’t discriminate like your hateful ass, you don’t have to be mean.”
“You’re barely bi, so quit acting like you’re all about the ladies. And I wasn’t looking for a date. She’s attractive. Am I not allowed to look at women at all now?”
“I’ve seen that look before. It was more than a mmm, let me get a piece of that. You get too invested in your conquests. You’re always looking for your life partner or soul mate.”
“What’s wrong with looking for your soul mate? It’s better than looking for your next infection.”
“Again, it wasn’t an infection.”
“Then why did it take you the rest of the weekend before you could walk straight?” Mandy smiled and sighed. “Fine, if a man can screw you that well, why aren’t you locking him down?”
“Because men like that don’t get locked down. And really I wouldn’t want that on the daily.”
“Would you like information on the Representative?” an overly eager volunteer broke up the conversation with a pamphlet.
“Maybe,” Mandy said with a smile that made Sarah instantly nervous.
“Don’t,” Sarah warned in a low tone.
“Oh, we’re going to find out what the Rep’s all about,” Mandy said while batting her eyes. “Can I talk to her?”
“Of course,” the bubbly girl said as she led them toward the put-together politician. “She’s making the move to Congress. Representative Schroeder has done so much in the State House the last few years. She’s who the Republican Party is looking for to take over the Fourth District.”
“You’ll have to tell me more. I’m a flake when it comes to elections,” Mandy played innocent.
“Ramsey and part of Washington County is the Fourth District,” Sarah said, stiffening her stance.
“Awesome, I was hoping Giggles here would tell me.” Mandy glared at Sarah. At this point Sarah wished Mandy would entertain herself with Giggles and not take advantage of her slight crushing on the Rep.
“Representative Schroeder, these two women would like to know more about your platform,” Giggles introduced the two of them.
Sarah suddenly had a problem breathing. Karen Schroeder was more than just put-together. She was breathtaking. Her high cheekbones and gentle, inviting eyes had Sarah envisioning things she shouldn’t. Crushes on straight women had destroyed her in the past. Then again, this woman was a politician. She was in the spotlight. She was not a real person. Celebrity crushes were fine.
“What area are you most interested in?” she asked in a voice that wrapped around Sarah and cradled her.
“I’m kind of wondering about you as a person,” Mandy said as she leaned on the table, squishing her full breasts together so they might as well be lighthouses on a foggy night. Even Sarah, who would never think of her best friend as a potential sexual partner, couldn’t help staring.
“I’m an outdoors type, I love fishing at my parents’ cabin,” Karen said, not taking her eyes off Mandy’s eyes. Damn, straight as an arrow. “Then again, when I’m not working, I just love being with my family. They’re my anchor and guide me in my decisions.”
“By family do you mean your husband and kids?”
“Oh, no, I barely have time for a personal life. My boyfriend and I—”
“That’s too bad,” Mandy purred and leaned over further. “Everyone needs a few minutes to snuggle in close with someone that gets what she desires.”
“Excuse me?”
“You know what I mean.” Mandy licked her lips, then bit her bottom one. “No matter what those desires are. Tell the truth, isn’t there a little bit of you that wants to go behind the show barn with me right now?”
“I really don’t know—”
“Excuse my friend,” Sarah interjected as she pulled Mandy back from the table. “She has a brain tumor and can’t control her sex drive.”
“That’s…strange…was she—” Karen started.
“I apologize for her making you uncomfortable.”
“Is there a problem, sweetheart?” an attractive man wrapped a protective arm around Karen’s shoulder.
“No, just backlash for my vote last year, I assume.” Karen’s inviting eyes became cold and hurt as she moved on to another constituent.
“What were you doing?”
“I wasn’t being blatant. Only you got it. She’s straight as hell or she would have been licking me as soon as I leaned over.”
“Oh my God, Mandy, not everyone is like you.”

Michel Prince is an author who graduated with a bachelor degree in History and Political Science. Michel writes new adult and adult paranormal romance as well as contemporary romance.
With characters yelling “It’s my turn damn it!!!” She tries to explain to them that alas, she can only type a hundred and twenty words a minute and they will have wait their turn. She knows eventually they find their way out of her head and to her fingertips and she looks forward to sharing them with you.

A place where your hero lives in a castle but turns into a beast.
How many lovers is the ideal number?
One is PLENTY.
Two is twice the fun!
Three? What? Hmmm..okay, what the hell. Let’s DO this!
Consider your answers carefully because once you are processed as a bride, there is no coming back.
So, how did you do? What lucky hero (or heroes) is about to get their hot hands on your eager body? Well, let’s see…
If you selected a Battleship in Outer Space – and 2 heroes, you’ll be processed immediately and headed for two hot, hunky Prillon Warriors to dominate you in bed and out of it.

(Don’t worry, he’s big, strong, and scary to his enemies, but the beast has two appetites, and one of them is for your…ummm…yeah. For you. We’ll leave it at that.)
If you are think Vikings are sexy, and the idea of multiple mates focused on nothing but your sensual pleasure…then the planet Viken is for you. But be prepared, these fierce warriors love to compete with one another, and with you between them, I wonder what the competition will entail…?

Tonight, her dress was pure sin. She wore a long, strapless light gray number that had a front slit, exposing a perfectly toned leg most the way up her thigh and a bustier top that hugged proud, ample breasts. The paleness of her dress made the tone of her skin appear even darker than usual, which made my stomach knot with tension because I yearned to investigate all that dark-dark skin, see how it felt under my hands, how it tasted against my tongue, how it trembled when I stroked it.
Yet I knew without a shadow of a doubt there was no way that would ever happen, because that lady right here was a ball breaker. You could tell it by the straight-backed, poised way she held herself, as if she might as well be behind a boardroom table, doling out punishments to her inferior insubordinates, and by the way she had no tolerance for stupidity or players. I swear, her stare alone could shrivel a guy’s family jewels to impotent nothingness. I usually had the itching urge to cover my junk whenever I talked to her.
And yet she was an irresistible challenge to idiots like me. Not just because she was model-worthy stunning, which she was. Nothing on her was ever out of place; it always struck me with the urge to mess her up…in the best ways possible. But because I felt the need to be the exception to the rule, the one who got past her defenses and scaled that impossible mountain.
Brandt groaned.
I glanced at him, forcing my brain back to the problem at hand, that being Julianna and her inability to take her eyes off my newly married brother. “Hasn’t it been months since you and she were over?” I asked, confused.
He sent me a sharp glance. “Over? We never started. There’s nothing to be over. Juli and I didn’t even finish the one date we went on.”
Asher sniffed. “Well, it looks as if she’s still willing to finish it.”
“Dammit.” Brandt glanced toward his wife. “I hope Sarah doesn’t see her watching me. I don’t want anything upsetting her on our wedding day.”
Asher shook his head. “So, why’d you even invite Juli?”
“I work with her.” Brandt moodily tugged at the collar of his tux.
It seemed odd to me that someone so classically beautiful worked in a nightclub as a bartender. To me, Julianna clearly belonged on a runway, displaying the latest fashion, or—
“It would’ve been strange to invite everyone else and leave her out. Besides, we’re still friends. She’s probably my favorite coworker.”
“Hey,” Asher muttered, offended since he occasionally bartended at Forbidden with Brandt too.
Brandt rolled his eyes. “You don’t count.”
But that only seemed to confuse Asher more. “Why don’t I count?”
Ignoring him, Brandt brought his hand up to his mouth so he could chew on his thumbnail. “We need to distract her somehow. Someone needs to…” Trailing off, he turned slowly toward me, and the intent in his gaze was pretty damn clear.
I paused mid-sip. “Wait, what? You can’t possibly want me to distract her?”
