Chapter 2: Fort Outpost

Brother Amos opened the door to the tavern. Like the town, it was small and mean, but a fire and food were inside. The place was crowded and a smoky haze filled the room. Since he was a Seeker, appropriately dressed in the grey robe with a brown, rope belt, the townspeople might question him, but they would do him no harm. He pushed back the cowl and revealed a round face with a black stubble. The Brothers were clean shaven, but he had had no spare water for the last week.

There were people at every table. Was this a celebration of some kind? Or were the townsmen so prosperous? He had discovered the farther westward he went the dialects and customs changed, the days were counted differently, and the economy and living conditions more primitive. Men in rough, homespun clothing looked at him. Women in dresses cut far too low and hemmed far too high, showed no interest. A Seeker bearing the staff would not pay for extra drinks or for their bodies. One youngish woman at a far corner beckoned him.

“Brother, there is an extra chair here. Come and rest.”

“I thank you for your invitation.” He settled himself onto the chair. “I am in need of food more than rest, however. Do they have any good sausages to go with their ale?”

Her eyes were a startling green color and her homespun butternut dress a respectable height over her bosom. Her tanned arms were bare and her brown hair was tied back. She looked to be about twenty, but it was difficult to tell. A small pinkish mouth opened to show small, well-formed teeth.

“They have both and they are filling.”

Brother Amos smiled at the girl and her male companion. The man was a masculine, taller version of the woman except his eyes were almost black in color. He looked to be a few years over twenty as wrinkles had started at the corners of his brown eyes set in an equally browned skin. He sported a fine mustache of matching dark brown hair.

Brother Amos dismissed the eastern tales of Halflings from the once Green World that existed before the Burning becoming mixed with the western Tonath populace. It was said that they could be recognized by their strange eye colors.

The man leaned forward and extended his hand. “I’m George Strauss and this is my sister, Venta.” In a lower tone he added, “Don’t let them charge you more than two geldens for two sausages and ale.” Then he leaned back as the server approached.

“What’ll you have?” Her voice was gruff and deep to match her height and girth.

“Two sausages, a loaf of dark bread, and a tankard of ale.”

She whirled away and delivered two tankards to the table next to them, picked up the empties, and headed for the bar area.

“The loaf will cost you another gelden.” George sounded a bit in awe. “I thought the Seekers relied on charity, if so you have picked the wrong table.”

Brother Amos smiled. “The last town I visited, a man was most charitable. I’ve traveled long and I thought I would share the loaf with two people who were kind enough to share their table. My name is Amos.”

“From where do you hail?

“Originally, the seacoasts of the Mechham’s eastern section, then at their capital, Anoth, to study at the Silver Star Institute, but these last few years I have traveled over the eastern half of our habitable continent. I’ve yet to gain the courage to take a sea voyage to the other continents although they say the towns and cities of Partha and Landings are quite civilized.”

The server returned, her tray laden with his order and more tankards. Her brow was sweaty and the dark hair wet against her full, flushed cheeks. Brother Amos hurriedly laid the three geldens on the table before being asked. Her hand swooped out for them, deposited the money into the depths of her leather apron, grunted, and left.

“As you correctly guessed, I am what the world calls a Seeker.” He deftly plied his knife to the loaf and handed a slice to the others before slapping the sausage on one slice and covering it with another.

“Do you plan to journey far in your search?”

“I plan to visit the prairies to the west of here as there is now a straight, level way between here and Beltran rather than going through the Bergman Mountains. I would like to visit the other towns in Brennan Province, and perhaps continue on to Port Haven in Greenland to study at their Green Institute. In the old days, before the Burning, it is said the mountains were called the Bergen Range and separated what we call Mecham. The maps named the Brennan Province as a new land opened by the earlier Star Shifts.

George drank from his own tankard and shook his head. “You can’t go straight through now. Our Mech army is on this side of the border and the BR army is on the other side. They won’t even clear people with papers or business dealings. Each side seems to think the other intends to start a war.”

Venta scowled. “Both sides are thieves. They’ll start a war on their own and everything around here will be burned or confiscated.”

“They are still talking.” George smiled at Brother Amos. “We have another Seeker in town, but this one is a secular Seeker, not a Brother. He is to join us here.”

“Are you actively searching out Seekers?”

“No, but I do have a small shop with leather goods, canvas, and heavier clothing. This one claims he will go over the mountains if necessary to avoid being trapped here. It is folly, but my shop contains what you will need if you insist on going by that route.”

“It is said that some of the people over there are quite savage.” Venta took a sip of her ale. “Some claim they are descendants of Halflings while the Greenlanders claim they have the true Way to the Stars.”

Brother Amos had to break in. “That can’t be. Halflings are something mothers use to frighten their children. If there ever were any such creatures from copula…, ah, merging between such creatures and Tonathians, it would have occurred long ago. I have traveled in the northern part of Greenland and talked with the people and Brothers there. They are just like us.”

“Brennan Province is an area where wild animals still roam and some of them are men. What else would you expect from BRs who work the mines and the oil wells and Greenlanders from the South?” Venta was adamant.

“Have you been there?”

“No.” She smiled at Brother Amos. “I’m repeating what the ones who went have told us.”

“They were probably drinking ale and impressing a young lady; and anyone else within earshot,” replied Brother Amos.

A lean, rough, clothed man carrying a stool stood at their table. “I see you gave away my seat so I’ve confiscated another.” He grinned at them, plunked down the stool, sat, and shoved his wide-brimmed hat back off his forehead. It was held by a leather thong wrapped around the hat as a band, the leather descending on either side of the face and knotted at the throat.

Brother Amos noted the new comer’s normal grey-blue eyes and wavy, light brown hair bleached by the sun. He was lean, yet muscular, and must stand over six measures. A large, sheathed knife hung casually at his side. This one was an adventure hardened, perhaps dangerous, man.

As if scenting fresh meat the server was next to him. “What’ll it be?”

“A tankard and three sausages, darling.” He gave a brief smile and turned back to Brother Amos.

“I’m Jack Donald.”

“This is Brother Amos, Jack. Like you, he wants to go to the land between mountains and the ocean. We’ve told him how much of a folly that is.”

Jack laughed. “Now, George, just because the BRs’ and Mechs’ road closures have cut into your trade, you needn’t take it out on wayfarers.”

Brother Amos leaned forward. “They tell me you are a Seeker. Why are you planning to go there?”

Jack looked at him. “Our family tradition states that we owned large land holdings not far from a Star Path Way Institute. I want to see if anything is left and if any records are still there.”

“If it wasn’t destroyed in the Burning, the BRs would have stripped it out long ago.” George was as dismissive of the quest as he was of the journey. “They are like that black goo they are named after. Black resin is foul.”

Jack laughed and paid the serving woman with a smile and a mark, rather than geldens. “That’s in case I want a refill. If not, it’s yours.”

Brother Amos was puzzled. Why was this man so free with his money? Surely the owner paid her something.

Brother Amos took another slice of bread and asked before biting down, “How do you plan to cross the border if it is so strongly guarded?”

“I’m not going by roads. I’m going south of here to get closer to the old mountain trails. There should be remnants of an old roadway there.”

All three were staring at him, and he shrugged. “It’s another old family legend that some sort of road for people and transporting goods went through the southern passes of the Bergman Range. They even passed down a map over the generations.”

“A map over a thousand years old? It would have crumbled.” Brother Amos as a Seeker knew about ancient relics. “Besides, any roadway was long ago covered by water, landslides, or dirt.

Jack remained unperturbed. “I didn’t say it was the original map. When needed a new copy was made. I’m not even sure how accurate it is. The road doesn’t go to the old Institute. It follows the contours of the mountains and pinpoints land several miles north of the old Institute. The road was supposed to be made of metal and may have withstood the elements.”

Venta’s eyes had assumed a dreamy, far-away cast. “They also talked about a silvery building on a hill serving as a beacon to all who travel there.”

Jack looked at her as though trying to gauge the truth of her story. “Do you know anyone who has actually seen it? Or, perhaps are you just dreaming of a place of safety?”

“Not safety, no something more, something, oh, I don’t know. Maybe I’m hoping that some of the old tales are true and that dreams come true. It would be worth the trip to find a place of peace and safety.”

“Why do you wish to venture into Brennan Province, Brother Amos?” Jack abruptly changed the subject.

“Like you, I wish to see if I can find a long ago legend. In my case, the old Star Path Institute. The legends say it was larger and grander than the one that stood in the east. The Teacher and Brothers at the old Western Institute brought peace and safety to all that lived in Tonath. It is said that someday a new Teacher will discover the old Star Charts.”

“It’s been well over a thousand years since the stars shifted and Tonath burned. It will be buried, burned, dismantled, or all of the three.” George was convinced they pursued dreams. It was better to dismiss such improbable legends.

“It hasn’t been much more than a thousand years since the Burning stopped.” Jack finished his sausage and took a large swallow from the mug.

“Not many people are aware of that.” Brother Amos looked at him. “Were you once a Way Seeker?”

“No, not me.” Jack gave that engaging smile again. “I gave up studying ways to use oil in something besides lamps about three years ago when it became evident that the BRs weren’t going to adhere to their treaty. Some say we Mechs were at fault,” he wisely lowered his voice. “Mendal Menchem tried to soothe the rhetoric, but both sides keep finding reasons to quarrel.

“Both will keep at it until they start the Burning all over again. We’ll never discover how many of the old legends were true.” Venta’s face grew grave and she seemed to be looking into the distance, not really seeing them or the others through the smoke in the room.

THE NEPHELIUM

The Eternals Book One

BY NATHAN PARKS

Blurb

Vampires, demons, and angels are all things myths and legends? Eve never gave them any thought. As a tattoo artist, she felt the only time she needed to devote to such stories was the time spent inking it on skin. She had always tried to discover who she was and find a way to belong to something. She never could have imagined that her past would actually come find her. When it found her would humanity be able to survive the choices she would make?

Join Eve, Alfonso, Leah, and others as the door to The Eternals is opened. This is more than just a battle of good and evil. It is a chance for all to discover that our choices affect more than just us, they affect even those who may never see us.

THE NEPHELIUM

The Eternals Book One

BY NATHAN PARKS

Excerpt

The nights were actually the days to so many of the city’s residents. Eve had often considered having The Broken Tear, her small, but well-visited, tattoo parlor, open throughout the night. She was sure that it would bring a completely new face to her customers; but then, again, she wasn’t willing to work those hours.

It had been raining earlier, but now the dark cover of clouds overhead had given up its last sorrowful droplets of liquid and left, instead, small mirrors for those whose heads hung low enough to look down into them. With all the potholes, the puddles were not hard to find.

This was her city, and Eve loved it. She loved the “caverns and valleys” of it all. To outsiders, it may seem overwhelming; but to those who had been born here, grown up here, and most likely one day would die here, it was home. One carved out their small niche in it all and never worried about the rest.

The nights here were truly different from the days. In the evenings, many feared walking the streets. It was true that shadows could hold unwanted dangers, but it was part of the territory, and one lived or one didn’t—it was their choice.

The lights from all the night diners, clubs, and retail stores offering things of lesser moral value all blended together for an iridescent glow that lit her path through the maze. A taxi would honk here and there; however, she paid no attention. Tonight she really was enjoying the walk, and she wasn’t even sure yet where she was going.

She wouldn’t say that her soul was troubled tonight, but tonight . . . well, she could say that tonight was just one of those nights when she really could go for a corner booth at Alfonso’s Café and some strong coffee, topped off with solitude. Demons haunted her mind, and she needed to discover some peace before she would even consider going home and turning in.

At 27, Eve was a strong and independent woman. Beautiful? Well, she knew she was eye-catching, but she was far from conceited; popularity was something she never found time to pursue. Of course, growing up as an orphan, one didn’t worry about frivolous things such as who was popular and who wasn’t; if one was an orphan, they weren’t popular. No, instead, they were only a quick welfare check for someone in authority who was considered fit to be their foster parent. Who cared what happened to the child behind closed doors? Whoever compared it to hell . . .well, there was nothing to really think about. That was all locked into its own filing cabinet, and the lock didn’t need to be broken into. One learned very quickly how to survive and how to live by instinct.

Alfonso’s Café was on the corner, coming up on her right; and she felt a slight sense of peace as she caught sight of the familiar neon glow of the steaming cup-of-joe sign that hung in the large window. It wasn’t a yuppie coffee joint or even a trendy chain café. It was . . . well, it was Alfonso’s. The inside of the café was decorated with raw, red brick walls and small lights placed here and there, accentuating small, Italian, café-style tables and chairs.

There were one or two booths toward the back out of the soft glow of the lights, which allowed a simple solitude of sorts. In fact, this had been where the now graying Alfonso found a younger Eve hiding one night at closing. Instead of reprimanding her or sternly insisting for her to leave, he simply smiled and brought a mug of hot chocolate to her. He didn’t bombard her with a whole bunch of questions that night, but had simply gone about his business of closing the place down and letting her be.

He had allowed the scared, but strong-willed, little girl to stay as long as she wanted that night. He had acted as though he had many other things to do, giving Eve the time to muster the needed courage to face the darkness that awaited her at home. Finally, she got up and walked out. They had not exchanged a single word that night, but that would change over the years. Now, almost 20 years later, he was the closest thing she had ever had to a real, caring father. He still knew enough to discern when she needed to be left alone and was wise enough to say just the right thing when she needed that word of encouragement.

Tonight the place actually had several customers, and not too many of them Eve recognized. She nodded at Maria as she headed to her back corner. Maria started working at Alfonso’s not too long after Eve had wandered in. She was not as old as Alfonso, but was old enough to be Eve’s mother. She had never taken up as much of a position in Eve’s life as the elderly proprietor had, but she did care very much for the young woman. Fortunately, the place may have many unusual patrons tonight; but her normal haven of escape was not filled, so she quietly slipped into the familiarity of her surroundings.

“The usual tonight, Eve?” Maria called out from behind the counter.

“No, I don’t feel like hot chocolate tonight. Let’s make it a double espresso.”

Maria gave out a long whistle as she went to work on the order. “Not planning on getting any sleep tonight, I take it,” a fellow at a small table to her left stated.

Eve was cordial with a weak smile, but in her eyes a message flashed that stated, “This is not your lucky night, Man. Find someone else.”

She looked around at her “safe haven.” A young couple who looked to be on a date were sitting near the front window, a business man with a magazine sat toward the middle of the store, and then there was her “would-be” acquaintance sitting just a couple of feet away from her. A few others dotted throughout the café looked to be finishing up.

She leaned her head back and looked up at the old photographs from Italy that she had blown up and framed for Alfonso. She would always cherish the day that she surprised him with these gifts. He loved Italy, and he would always bring out old photographs and talk long into the night about the past and the things that meant so much to him. It had taken careful planning by her, Maria, and Megan, another castaway of sorts whom Alfonso had unofficially adopted, to get the photos carefully out of the albums and to a special frame shop. They had chosen old-style frames and had even gotten an electrician all lined up to come in after hours one night, once Alfonso was gone, to hang the special lighting. Alfonso had wept.

Eve smiled at the thought. The photos now embraced her when she needed an escape. She would leave the little café behind in her mind and travel to the streets pictured within the photos.

Maria dropped off the dark brew of insomnia as she made her way toward another table. Eve called out to her, “Hey, where is Alfonso tonight?” as it dawned on her that she had not seen her mentor nor had heard his jovial voice.

“Went home early—not feeling good,” Maria stated over her shoulder as she dropped off two dark chocolate mochas for the couple toward the front of the café.

“Alfonso your boyfriend?” It was the “I don’t have a clue” guy from her left again. “He truly must be a lucky guy.”

“And how would you know that?” Eve asked, sarcasm oozing thickly from her lips as the first sip of her espresso poured down the back of her throat. “I mean really? You don’t know anything about me, and I could be the next closest thing to a serial killer; so he actually wouldn’t be very lucky now, would he?”

**Author Peek** Interview with Nathan Parks, THE NEPHELIUM (The Eternals Book One)

**Author Peek** Interview with Nathan Parks

THE NEPHELIUM, The Eternals Book One

INTRODUCING…Nathan.

Before we get started talking about your writing, tell us a little about yourself, where you’re from, what you do for a living (if you’re not a full time writer) what hobbies you have, etc. Whatever you’d like to share to introduce yourself.

I have been writing since I was about 6 years old. For me it was an escape from an emotionally abusive home situation. Later it allowed me to escape to a world that evil could be conquered. I went through a time where I was molested, and as a young man I felt I couldn’t tell anyone about it. The older I got the worse the darkness became in my soul; writing allowed me to control situations.

For many years I refused to allow anyone to read my writings, and that was because I felt that by doing so I was allowing them into my safe world.

My first writings that I had published was for my college newspaper, and I wrote a short story called the Angel Sagas.

I am a father of 3 boys, a husband of an amazing artist/art teacher. I served for 20yrs in the military, and now my paycheck job (and career that I do love) is law enforcement.

When I am not writing my time is devoted to helping others and family. I am a fitness coach and life motivator; as well as an assistant football coach.

My family is focused on always finding new things to do. This could be new trails to hike, fishing, camping, or even checking out new historical sites. We live in the beautiful state of Colorado, and so the choices are endless.

My favorite author is J.R.R. Tolkien. My mother would not allow me to read anything that had wizards or witches in it during the time I was growing up. I had found a torn copy of the The Hobbit when I was about 12 yrs old. I began to secretly read it until my mother found it, and threw it away. Later that evening I went to the trash and pulled out the book, and hid it away. I was transported to a world that I felt at home in.

In my writings I strive to ensure that I follow Tolkien’s example of ensuring that each character has a deep background; no matter if the reader ever knows it or not.

1. What’s your favorite part of the writing process?

My favorite part of the writing process has to be where I enter into the world of the story. Many people have asked how it is I come up with the things that I write. I explain it the same way every time. In my mind there is a long dark hallway. This hallway has crushed red velvet carpet. It is narrow, and on each side there are mirrors. These mirrors are gothic in nature, but I never look into them. I follow the hallway to an old ancient door. There I stop and listen. I can hear noises and conversations taking place on the other side of the door. I then open the door, and step into the world of the story. Here the story is taking place; no matter if I am going to write about it or not. It is not my place to change it or determine the outcome. I am not to influence it in anyway. I simply am there to watch and document what I see, and bring it back into our world for the readers.

Many times I have no idea what is going to happen, and I have found myself sitting on my computer stunned as something takes place that I never saw coming. I love this part!

2.  If you were to choose one superpower, what would it be?

I am not sure if I would choose a superpower. My favorite “superhero” has always been Batman. I love him because he is able to make changes in the world without having to have something that is not of this world. It really speaks home to me, and keeps me grounded knowing that each of us have the power to change the world around our center of influence.

3. Do you ever get stuck when you’re writing a book? What do you do to get “unstuck”?

Because I don’t write for a career there are many times I get stuck. The reason for this is also because how I write. By allowing the characters to just live out their story in front of me, and not really have a plan for where they take me I can get lost in their world. Many times I am “following” a character and writing away, and then I have to go be Dad, Coach, Law Enforcement Officer, etc. When I come back through the door the character I was writing about, their life didn’t stop, and so I find that where they were leading me has already happened.

This has been good in some ways, because it actually gives me material for side books (off the main series) that will be taking place during the main series.

I guess the way that I get “unstuck” is to remind myself I can’t control the characters. So, sit back, relax, and once again follow them to see what they will do.

4. What is your least favorite part of writing?

My least favorite part of writing is attempting to find the time, and feeling as if I am letting the fans of my writing down. Many who have read the first book have become very attached to the characters. Shortly after the first book was first published I even had fans start their own fan based stories. It was great. I realized then it wasn’t just my story, but it was the characters reaching out. I then felt the huge responsibility to actually ensure this did not become about me.

I also hate the self-publishing part of it. When I first published The Nephelium I had no idea what I was doing. The lady I was married to at the time, as a gift, had purchased this self-publishing/print-on-demand package for me. It seemed great! For a very small, one-time-payment, they would edit my book as well as print-on-demand. I would be the publisher. Well, it was a disaster! The company placed the book on amazon without me seeing the final edit. There were page numbers missing, chapters labeled the same, and even pages missing. This was just the start of the issues. The lady who ran it/owned the company passed away suddenly. Her husband sold it to an out of country owner.

I discovered that when they had placed it on Amazon they had also stated they were the publisher. Amazon refused to pull it down because I am not the publisher, and the new owners claimed that I owed them all kinds of money in order for them to take it off.

I then revamped the novel, did a new cover, published through CreateSpace, and then began to market it by telling people not to purchase the 1st edition.

5. If we came to your house for dinner, what would you prepare for us?

I love to cook! I haven’t done a lot of that lately, but love to! Ironically I am not much of an eater. I enjoy the taste of great food, but do not enjoy eating. So, it really makes it hard a lot of times. Colorado has a huge “foodie” environment, and so I love to see how things are used. I love making steaks, and love prepping them a day in advance. I then put different seasonings on them, lather them in butter, and then wrap them in plastic wrap. Then they will set in the fridge for a day. (now I am hungry)

6. What is most difficult for you to write?  Characters, conflict or emotions? Why?

By allowing my characters to drive the story it can become difficult to experience their emotions. I am very empathic, and this can really cut deep sometimes. There is a scene in book one where I was so drained afterwards, because of the emotion, that I felt depressed. A scene, that I believe will be in the upcoming novel, was really hard. I followed my character into a place that I started recognizing sounds and smells. I realized that the scene in front of me was of a young boy dealing with being molested. It wiped me out!

7.  A penguin walks into your office, right now, wearing a sombrero. What does he say to you and why is he here?

PenJaun the Penguin has nothing to say to anyone because he doesn’t have to. Truly if you are a Penguin with a sombrero, there is nothing you need to say. In fact he just would sit down, pull out a cigar and begin to blow smoke rings. He would ask for a margarita on the rocks though.

8.  If you could wave a magic wand, what ill in the world would you solve and why?

If I could I would change the way people refuse to actually listen. They want to be heard, but do not wish to listen. If we could learn to communicate with care and love for each other we would be so much better.

9. Tell us about your next book & when is it being published?

My next novel will be tiled Vapors  it will pick up about 5yrs after the first novel. Many new characters as well as returning characters. Right now it is on schedule to be out the beginning of 2018. I’m also working on three other novels. One will be a Steampunk novel that will have a children’s book adaption, as well as a coloring book. My wife will be doing the artwork, and we hope to get donations so that we can take the children’s adaption and coloring book to patients in Children’s hospital. My wife and I will dress as characters from the book as we give these to the children. I’m also working on my first law enforcement novel, and a novel that will deal with PTSD.

WILDFIRE’S HEART

Elemental Hearts Book 1

BY SIOBHAN MUIR

BLURB

When you wish upon a wildfire…

Hot Shot Saif al Nar is a natural when it comes to fighting fires. As an Ifrit—a fire djinn—there’s no one better. But he doesn’t anticipate the local residents being suspicious and afraid of his ethnicity when his crew comes into town from the fire line for some R&R. Add some unexpected backup in the form of a lovely djinn and Saif is ready to set the town on fire.

A djinn might get burned…

Raihana Nejem retired from being a genie in a lamp centuries ago and now works for the U.S. Forest Service. Fires are devastating her field area, but the sexy firefighter djinn might just be more dangerous. Her people believe Ifrits to be evil demons and Raihana can’t be sure Saif isn’t responsible for the arson fires cropping up in town.

Or they could set the night on fire…

Is Saif behind the arson or is something darker and more dangerous going on? With hearts and lives on the line, Raihana must decide if she can stand the heat that comes with loving a man like Saif.

WILDFIRE’S HEART

Elemental Hearts Book 1

BY SIOBHAN MUIR

Excerpt

“What’s fresh for today?” Saif straightened his shoulders as he looked over the fillets lying in ice.

“We have steelhead in and trout. We also have Tilapia fillets, but they are frozen.” The young man bit his lip. “I’m really sorry about those assholes. Most of us here aren’t like that. Firefighters are honored in our town. Seriously.”

Saif’s initial response urged him to say it was all right, but it wasn’t. Instead he shrugged. “Thanks for your appreciation. Do you have any smoked salmon?”

“Only the packaged stuff in the cooler, there.” He pointed to an open cold bin.

Saif looked it over, but shook his head. “I think I’d like to see the trout.”

“Buy the steelhead, it’s better this time around.” A new voice intruded on Saif’s awareness and he focused his attention on the owner. “And thank you so much for saving the town and the forest. I appreciate it.”

Fire licked up his arms and legs to pool in the center of his chest around his heart as he took in the glorious vision standing beside him. Rich, dark hair bordering on black flowed down the woman’s back in a thick tail. Emerald green eyes looked out over a hooked nose and elegant lips. She wore a dry-wicking field shirt and olive green cargo pants, but he could see the lush curves and nipped-in waist through them.

“You’re welcome. The team is grateful for the support.” Saif smiled at his female companion. “Thank you for the suggestion on the trout. My name’s Saif al Nar.” He held out his hand.

“Raihana Nejem. Nice to meet you.” She grasped his hand and the world tilted.

Pleasure and excitement built into a crescendo as light and fire exploded inside him. A triumphant roar ricocheted inside his head and he wanted to give into the inferno and dance. Instead he locked his knees and held on, hoping he wouldn’t crush her hand in the meantime.

What in the ninth hell is going on? He hadn’t experienced such a surge of internal power since he first reached his Ifrit majority well over a millennium ago. His eyes widened as he took in the essence of the woman he touched. Instead of field clothing, she wore a choli and a pair of gauzy harem pants with slits from ankles to hip. Magnificent waves of her hair flowed and danced in unseen winds, only held back from her face by a jeweled headband holding a large fire opal cabochon.

Funnel-shaped winds spun around her and her eyes glowed with golden light as lightning flashed. Bangles adorned both wrists and jeweled rings covered three out of ten fingers, but her feet remained jewel-free.

A whispered prayer, old as time, echoed in the back of his head. The words didn’t make sense to him, but their meaning and connotation came through clearly. He needed more time with this woman. She was one of his kind and a rare gift in the world.

I need her.

The thought surprised him so much he gasped and let go of Raihana, blinking as the world went back to ‘normal’. She stared just as surprised at him and blinked a few times before finding her smile somewhere. It looked a little tentative while she curled her hand around her palm as if to capture some of the energy they’d shared.

Saif cleared his throat and remembered his manners. “The pleasure is mine.” He returned his attention to the counter attendant, who waited with raised eyebrows. “I’ll take three fillets of steelhead, please.”

“All right.”

The attendant bent to grab the fish, but Saif’s attention returned to Raihana.

“Thank you for the recommendation.”

“You’re welcome. The fish is kinda hit or miss depending on which week it is here.” She nodded and focused on the other selections in the case. “I was hoping they’d have some black cod, but it’s rare to get some this far inland.”

“You must live here in town then?” He hoped she wouldn’t notice his attempt to get to know her better. He wanted to keep it casual even if his inner Ifrit demanded he take her to his hotel and make her his.

“Just for the summer. I’m studying the Lewis’s Woodpecker nesting habits here on the Western Slope.” She grimaced. “Well, I was until the fire swept through my field site.”

Saif rarely paid attention to the wildlife in a burned area, but his heart ached for the loss of her field season. “I’m sorry. Does that mean you’re out of a job?” Please don’t say you’re leaving.

She smiled briefly as if she’d heard his internal thought. “No, this was just one of the field sites that I’ve been contracted through Fish & Wildlife to monitor. I have two other target areas and two more alternates to get an accurate bird count.”

“Oh, that’s good to hear.”

“Here’s your fish, sir. Can I get you anything else?”

Saif shook his head. “No, thanks.” He took the fish while the attendant turned to Raihana and asked if she needed anything.

“Yes, I’d like a pound of sea scallops and a half pound of snow crab.”

“You understand they’ve been frozen, right?”

“Yes, thanks.”

“What are you making? It sounds good.” Saif braced his legs apart in parade rest, hoping he didn’t fall over before he got his shopping done.

“Crab and scallops in a cream sauce over pasta.”

His mouth watered, but not just for her dinner idea. “That sounds delicious. Much more exciting than what I have planned.”

INTO THE SUNRISE

A woman of courage, heart, and integrity…

BY KATHRYN JANE

Blurb

Into The Sunrise, is a love story of epic proportions.

Ride along while Dusty survives the unthinkable, thrives in a new environment, and learns to love again.

Being a jockey in a man’s world gave her a thick skin, but nothing could prepare her for the emotional kicks to the gut, the firestorm of discovery, and the eye-opening experience of finding her own intrepid spirit.

INTO THE SUNRISE

A woman of courage, heart, and integrity…

BY KATHRYN JANE

Excerpt

The low rumble of a diesel engine grew louder in the quiet morning air, and John’s big, black one-ton came over the rise with the training gate in tow—a four-stall replica of what was used at most tracks.

Before the truck came to a full stop the passenger door flew open, and a tiny two-legged dynamo raced toward him, launched herself, and, catching her, Chase swung her high off the ground. By the time he put her down they were both laughing.

Dusty stuffed her hands in her back pockets and grinned at him. “Hey, cowboy.”

It hit him like a brick how much he’d missed that smile, and her cheeky attitude. “You’ve grown up some.”

She rolled her eyes. “Ya think? It’s been more than ten years.”

She had curves now, and long, silky hair. Racing photos of her perched over a horse’s back hadn’t done her justice.

“She’s just passing through.” John’s voice had a sharp edge.

“Not staying to visit?” Chase asked.

Instead of answering John asked, “Where’s your hired man?”

Chase hated that term, especially in the demeaning way John used it. Murray deserved better, but there was no point arguing with a man like John. “He’s on the road, moving horses.”

“Guess you’ll need my help, then. Where do you want this thing parked?”

Chase pointed to the paddock, and the three of them worked together to get the gate backed into position, then used portable panels to block the gap between it and the fence.

With the stall gates open, a horse could easily pass through to get from one side to the other.

“Might as well get some schooling done while you have the two of us to help,” said John.

Chase would prefer to work alone and give Angel a day or two to get used to seeing the gate in the paddock, but he’d learned many years ago to pick his battles with John.

He headed to the barn with Dusty in his wake, like old times.

Pointing to the first stall, Chase said, “Grab Jake—retired racehorse and first-class babysitter—and lead the way. I’ll follow with Angel.”

“What’s taken’ so long?” shouted John.

Dusty’s shoulders went up. “Nothing changes,” she muttered while she slipped the halter on Jake and led him out into the sunshine.

Meet Author Kathryn Jane…

Award winning author, Kathryn Jane began her publishing career with a spine tingling Romantic Suspense series about intrepid (read…kickass) women and the men who dare to love them. From there she’s moved on to write about other women of courage, heart, and integrity, and their journeys to find love and happiness. Journeys filled with twists, turns and amazing surprises.

Kathryn’s eclectic background allows her to write about subjects some might find daunting, because she hassaved lives by giving CPR instructions over the phone, and she has ridden as cargo with racehorses flying across the country. Yep, she’s also climbed the corporate ladder, and even taken up a new career or two after the age of fifty.

In her spare time, Kat loves walking alongside the Pacific Ocean, volunteering as a feral cat snuggler, and painting rocks to hide at the beach—hoping a chance discovery will put a smile on a stranger’s face. Kathryn believes kindness, optimism and positive thinking will eventually make the world a better place.

Karen’s Killer Book Bench: No Excuses by Nikky Kaye

NO EXCUSES

BY NIKKY KAYE

Blurb

Maddie’s rules for attending a work retreat:

Pack the right clothes. Especially extra underwear.
Don’t try to school your insanely hot boss on acceptable trust exercises.
Be prepared for the extracurricular ropes course.
Make sure there is a safety net when you fall, because you will fall hard.

Gage doesn’t appreciate how hard it is to be his right hand woman—especially when I’m spending so much time with my own right hand, fantasizing about him. My demanding, control freak boss is testing all my limits, and I don’t know how long I can stay professional.

No Excuses is a hot, full-length contemporary romance, featuring blindfolds, rope play, food fights, and sexy architectural features like wainscoting. As in all Nikky Kaye books, cheating is not allowed, but a little angst, some funny business, and a HEA are non-negotiable.

NO EXCUSES

BY NIKKY KAYE

Excerpt

He moved close to me, our bodies nearly touching. I kept my eyes on his chest as he gently draped one of the ties around me, cool and soft on the nape of my neck. The tiny hairs under my ears stood up at the feel of the silk sliding across my skin. Every sense I had was on high alert.

He smelled like fresh laundry, and a trace of something else lingered on his skin. It was almost like the scent of paper, or an overworked photocopier. I felt the heat from his hands close to my throat, and the hairs on his forearms tickled my collarbone for an infinitesimal moment.

My attention remained focused on the buttons of his shirt. I was very worried that if I met his gaze, my hyperawareness of him would shine out of my eyes like a flashlight.

“We’ll just leave this here for now,” he murmured, flicking one end of the tie against the underside of my chin. “Are you ready?”

Not even remotely.

I nodded mutely, but I let out a little gasp when his fingers touched my chin and tilted my face up. It was so tempting to screw my eyes shut, like a little girl trying to pretend that something didn’t exist if she couldn’t see it. I’d had plenty of practice with that before.

But he wouldn’t let me retreat. He looked at me directly and without guile, as usual. What was a little different this time, however, was the way his eyes darkened into stormy seas.

“Trust me.” His simple words wormed into my heart as his warm breath landed on my lips.

My voice cracked as I said, “Mister Gage.” It wasn’t an answer or a question, a protest or a plea. I honestly didn’t know what I wanted to say, and whatever was building in me halted as he lifted the other piece of fabric to my eyes.

He smoothed his thumbs across the strip of silk over my eyes, spreading out from the bridge of my nose to my temples. The tie was held firm between his fingers—those nimble fingers that paused in my hair briefly before they met again at the back of my head.

“Is that too tight?” he asked as he pulled the half-knot.

The sound of the silk rubbing against itself whispered in my ear. I shook my head. His hands clutched my hair and held me still.

“I’m not done.” His fingers tangled in my hair as he finished tying, pulling a few strands just enough to make me suck in a breath.

He froze. “Did I hurt you?”

“No.” My nipples hardened into tight buds as his breath washed over my forehead. “I, uh, no,” I repeated.

Gage had never touched me this much in the whole time I’d been working with him. Just the memory of his hands in my hair was enough to make me wobbly in the knees.

He dragged his thumbs across my covered eyes again, like a parent wiping away their child’s tears. Tracing his index fingers lightly over my eyebrows, he made an indistinct but satisfied noise.

“I can’t see anything,” I complained.

I was so blind that I flinched when his mouth dipped to my ear. “Good,” he chuckled.

Reflexively I swayed toward him, like a flower toward the sun. He pressed his thumbs gently into my cheekbones, then his fingertips left a trail of fire down my jaw and neck. On the journey he slipped the other tie from where it dangled around my neck, and pressed it into my trembling hands.

“Tie me up,” he ordered in a low voice.

Yeah, those were words I definitely never expected to hear from my boss’s mouth.

Meet Author Nikky Kaye…

Nikky Kaye likes to read and write sassy, sexy, smart (and sometimes silly) stories. Once her books were referred to as “fuction” in a typo, but it sounds pretty appropriate.

After a 15-year hiatus from romance writing, she began self-publishing in the summer of 2016. Her first new adult erotic romance novella, Once Should Be Enough, became a bestseller in “Humorous Erotica”—which she found to be a hilarious accolade.

She has a horrible addiction to diet cola (known in her house as “Mummy sip”) and an impressive collection of power tools. Her half-finished home projects keep taunting her while she writes. In her diverse career as a college professor, working in the film industry or with the United Nations, she never got to go to work in her PJs—until now.

The two begin a secret romance, meant to last only as long as the starlet is on location in Bash’s hometown. When the paparazzi, obligations, and pride tear them apart, will Bash come to his senses in time, or will Grace marry the wrong man?

Amazingly sweet!

I HIGHLY recommend this series. You will be hooked into the story like I was.

OUT OF TIME

Out of Uniform Series Book 3

BY MELISSA KLEIN

Excerpt

Grace licked her dry lips. “Upstairs, there’s a guest room I’ve been slipping off to each night after the staff retires.”

“You have to keep up the lie even in your own home?”

“We can’t risk it.”

He brushed a finger across her lips. “Except that’s what you’re doing with me.”

She closed her eyes as the pain washed over her. “I know, but I can’t seem to stop wanting you.”

“You know how much I hate lies.”

His low growl sent shivers across her skin. “This is all I have to offer, but I’m willing to beg if need be. I need the peace being with you brings, even if

it’s only temporary.”

He kissed her palm. “At this point, I’m willing to take even a small part of you.”

She closed her eyes at the pain in his voice.
