Granola Girl’s Healing Power’s Series: A Treasure Chest of Goodness
Are there any classic novels that you only recently read for the first time?
Well, it’s not a “classic” but it is a bestseller and I finally read it. I savored the short and oh so sweet, tuesdays with Morrie. As a ghostwriter I was told by the client that this is the kind of vibe he wanted for the non-fiction novel I wrote for him.
The end is a bittersweet one. I was promised co-author credit. The client fibbed and my name is not on the book. I did pen The Healing Powers of Tea, and tea plays a big role in his book. So in my heart I know it’s my baby.
You’re organizing a party. Which two authors, dead or alive, do you invite?
I would love to host John Steinbeck. He input his emotion into his work. And, of course, Travels with Charley is one of my favorites books. When I was in my early twenties, I left Northern California and hitched and hiked with my dog in search of America. Steinbeck was my mentor, my teacher, my hero.
Next up for tea and scones, would be Stephen King. I would love to hear him tell a spooky tale. One late winter, I drove from Lake Tahoe to Reno for a book signing. He was there a week prior. It was a hard act to follow. But I got a call from the manager a day before my event. She said, “I don’t know how to tell you this but all of your books sold out.” So, I took my beloved Brittany and we ended up bringing more books to the bookstore.
Who are your favorite writers? Are there any who aren’t as widely known as they should be, whom you’d recommend in particular?
The trio of authors I chose for my oral exams in grad school are still my favorite writers. So, it’s John Steinbeck, Edward Albee (I was going to be a playwright), and George Elliot who had a sensitive husband who trashed her bad reviews. (My professors did approve of the master. However, they said they hoped I became an author—not a literature teacher.)
What do you read when you’re working on a book? And what kind of reading do you avoid while writing?
I read books and articles related to my chosen topic. I make a point of it to choose a different angle, style, and turn the subject matter upside down—this way it’s all mine. I stay clear of novels because it’s too distracting and takes me out of the zone.
What moves you most in a work of literature?
When the author reveals the inner self and isn’t timid to share feelings—that is what makes me laugh or cry.
What genres do you especially enjoy reading?
My favorite genres include Sci-Fi, Romance, and Adventure.
What book are you planning to read next?
I’m too busy writing. I will not be reading but writing Book 2: Soulmates with Paws: A Collection of Tales & Tails.
What books and authors have impacted your writing career?
Anne Rice taught a class at San Francisco State University—and she was amazingly real. Rice told us when we write we should pretend to disrobe and share ourselves without inhibitions. And that’s just what I do.

Brewing Resilience -- Find the Coffee in Tahoe Amid Trade Wars
Smart Strategies for Sourcing Superfood Coffee
in Tahoe Amid Trade Wars (Tahoe Daily Tribune)
Imagine: I wake up and brew artisan ground coffee with a splash of low-fat organic milk, every day like clockwork. Welcome to my constant—like feeding the dog and cat—to give me that feel-good warm and fuzzy feeling. I love the smooth vibe from my cup of naturally flavored java from Hawaii.
What’s more, a new study published in March 2025 in the journal Nature Medicine reveals that sipping coffee in the morning can be a road to longevity. The study gives kudos to this perk to the antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds in coffee, which may help reduce the risk of chronic diseases such as heart woes and diabetes. The findings: Those who savor their morning cup of Joe get the protective effects, contributing to a longer life span.
The bad news is, during the trade wars (remember, Inoted these were coming) and pre-recession, getting coffee at a good price in Tahoe can be a challenge! But thinking outside of the box can ensure you have access to quality brews despite potential price hikes and supply chain disruptions. (My island brand is now AWOL!). Since I wrote the book The Healing Powers of Coffee (Kensington), I know a thing or two about scoring coffee. Here are some clever tip$:
1. Sipping Through Tahoe’s Hidden Coffee Gems: Look for independent cafes that prioritize local or direct-trade coffee, as they might have better access to quality beans without relying heavily on international imports.
2. Roast and Revel: Tahoe’s Artisan Coffee Roasters. Get a bargain from roasters who may offer bulk buying options. This can sometimes provide better prices than retail outlets, especially during times of roller coaster market prices due to tariffs and trade disputes.
3. Deals in the Deep Blue: Snagging Tahoe’s Best Coffee Bargains: Check Out Sales and Promotions: Keep an eye out for sales at local grocery stores. Many retailers may offer discounts or promotions to attract customers during economic downturns, making it good time to stock up on your favorite blends…
4. Stash Your Beans: Storage Solutions for Tahoe’s Coffee Lovers: Yes, you can chill and even freeze bags of ground coffee. Refer to number 3. During my book research, I was comped with pounds and pounds of coffee (ground and whole bean). No way could I use all of the varieties at once. Storing it worked!
5. Beyond the Bean: Try Tahoe’s Alternative Brands: Okay. I am a coffee snob. When my Hawaiian brand was MIA—I switched to other products I wrote about in the coffee book. And while the price a was a tad higher it was worth it.
6. Click and Sip: Online Coffee Finds for Tahoe Enthusiasts: You can be greeted with a wider selection of coffees. Local retailers may offer competitive pricing. Check out different online coffees that offer fast shipping options directly to your front door.
By following these steps, you can face the challenges posed by trade wars and economic uncertainty while still enjoying your daily cup of coffee in Tahoe.

Recession-Proof Staples for Spring
Spring into Summer:
Recession-Proof Staples for Healthy Living in Tahoe
A friend of mine recently shared that he’s been relying on peanut butter and honey sandwiches, coffee and tea to cope with pre-recession jitters. This reminded me of my own graduate school days when I survived on brown rice and vegetables. It got me thinking: “There has to be a better way to eat healthy on a shoestring budget.” Given the current economic uncertainly, it’s crucial to identify nutritious food staples that are both healthy and budget-friendly Here are some recession-proof staples that thrive in the spring and summer months in the Tahoe region, along with their long shelf life, health benefits and affordability even during price surges from trade wars.
1. Quinoa: Welcome to a complete protein, containing all nine essential amino acids. It’s also high in fiber, magnesium, and antioxidants. Tahoe Friendly: Quinoa can be sourced from local farmers or purchased in bulk at reasonable prices. Its versatility allows it to be used in salads, bowls, or as a side dish during summer barbecues.
2. Lentils: Peas and Beans. All part of the legume family, these gems are rich in protein, fiber, iron, and folate. They are heart healthy and help regulate blood sugar levels. Tahoe Friendly: Lentils do well in cooler climates and can be found locally or through regional suppliers. They are inexpensive compared to meat and can be added to hearty soups and salads perfect for spring picnics.
3. Potatoes: Both russet and sweet taters are high in vitamins, potassium and dietary fiber. They have anti-inflammatory properties and support immune function. Tahoe Friendly: Taters can be harvested from farms around Lake Tahoe. They are filling yet affordable when bought from farmers’ markets. Baked and stuffed with seasonal vegetables or baked sweet home fries sprinkled with fresh parsley and black pepper are tasty for lunch and dinners.
4. Pasta: Whole grain pasta is a good source of fiber, low in fat and cholesterol. It’s also a good energizing complex carbohydrate. Tahoe-Friendly: Its affordability makes it a smart choice for budget-conscious consumers looking for satisfying meals such as pasta salads or entrées paired with tomatoes and zucchini. Bonus tip: Store different shapes and sizes for variety.
5. Marinara Sauce: All-natural ready-made sauce infused with olive oil and garlic is low in fat and calories and high in vitamin C. Tahoe Friendly: If tomatoes skyrocket in price, use less and add to the sauce for a chunky version mixed with other veggies such as zucchini and mushrooms.
By focusing on these items during spring and summer around Lake Tahoe, you can eat well without breaking the bank. Psst! Don’t forget to use homegrown herbs like basil and parsley and spices for more flavor and health benefits.

The Vanishing Honey Bees--Update--Alarm! News on the Bees!
If the bee disappears off the surface of the globe thenman would only have
–Albert Einstein
Years ago the UK’s Y Mail reportedthe chilling story that up to 12 million bees dropped dead from hundreds ofapiaries in the Brevard County, Florida. Local beekeepers and authoritiespinpointed pesticides (perhaps from spraying one night by a helicopter formosquito control) as the culprit. These bees within a one-and-half-miledistance died at the same time and were found on the premises.
So,while this chilling story is about the demise of honey bees and theirbeekeepers, is the honeymoon over and how will the absence of this insectaffect our planet? Here are some questions and answers, straight from experts Iinterviewed for my book The Healing Powers of Honey: A Complete Guideto Nature’s Remarkable Nectar! And the problem has humans inthe U.S. and around the globe buzzing.
5 Questions: Where Have All the HoneyBees Gone?
Q. Colony Collapse Disorder wasexcluded as a cause of the dead bees in the Florida incident. So,what exactly is this term?
A. Back in 2006, an apiary ownerin Lewisburg, Pennsylvania, made the problemknown. Penn State researchers took note of the bee colonydecline, due to a condition now known as Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD). Thiscondition causes honey bee colonies to simply vanish without a trace—go AWOLleaving their hives in the dust—lending to eerie images of TheHappening and I Am Legend sci-fi films of human andanimal extinction.
Q. What are some of the theoriesbehind CCD?
A. Theories include climatechange, diet, mites, pesticides, and viruses. Also, the stress of traveling forpollination of crops and the usage of cell phones (perhaps due to theradiation) are in the mixed bag of possibilities for why the bees are vanishingand leaving their beekeepers out of work and shocked by losing half or more oftheir prized colonies to an unknown cause.
Q. How will the die-off of the honeybee affect our food chain?
A. Millions of acresof U.S. fruit, vegetable, oilseed, and legume crops depend on insectpollination—and that includes the sacred honey bees. This little insect giveshuman gifts from the hive but also helps pollinate our crops, home gardens, andwildlife habitat. And don’t forget most beef and dairy products enjoyed inthe United States count on insect-pollinated legumes, such as alfalfaand clover. Worse, if the bee disappears our food chain would decline indiversity and quantity, and images of the futuristic doomsday films withoutfresh food like Soylent Green and The Road couldbecome a grave reality.
Q. What are scientists doing aboutCCD?
A. The U.S. Department ofAgriculture is trying to help get a handle on Colony Collapse Disorder. In 2010it dished out $6 million in emergency assistance to beekeepers who had losttheir bees. And scientists are busy at work trying to discover what exactly iscausing the vanishing of honey bees.
California beeexpert Dr. Eric Mussen of UC Davis says, “None of us know why the bees are notas vital as they used to be. In many cases this may be due to limited access toa good varied supply of pollens.” He hopes in our lifetime scientists willdiscover what is killing the honey bees. “But,” he adds, “even if we find thecause, will we be able to overcome it?”
Q. What can you do to help keep thehoney bee alive and well?
A. Devote aportion of your property to growing annual and perennial plants the bloomconsecutively over the whole season that honey bees are collecting nectar andpollens for food. Reduce the pesticides of all kinds to a minimum. Inareas with extended dry periods, supply fresh water in a way so that visitingbees don’t become a nuisance.
Consider donatingfunds to bee researchers around the country who are trying to determine thecause of CCD and what can be done to bolster the bee populations.

Read Book Review
Creative and celebrated author Cal Orey has compiled a work of poetry, vision, and transcendental life philosophy, encompassing captivating photographs of Gatsby, her orange tabby cat with whom changed her life in, Time-Traveling Tabby: A Journey Through Whiskers and Time. How can a cat travel through time? That is the essence of this sci-fi fantasy theme, which showcases the wisdom and sensory perceptions of this amazing feline. We all know how extraordinary cats are, being known to predict earthquakes and other events; Gatsby will steal readers’ hearts.
What struck me through paging this truly unique book is – love. Only a bond beyond ordinary, between two souls, one human and one feline, can create such emotions, and only through the wordsmithing of Cal Orey can a book such as this be comprised with such heart-felt realizations articulated so beautifully. The preponderance of photographs showcasing Gatsby lying down next to a clock displaying various times irks one’s imagination as to the meaning of such images. The natural mane of the cat’s forehead has a symbol reminiscent of the letter “M” – mysteriously spurring curiosity in the readers – does it stand for “Meow?”
A bedtime storybook indeed, or better yet a traveling companion, allowing it to be opened and stared at the depth of the pictures and words as if looking up at the star-filled sky at night. This book is a treasure for any personal library or gift.

Invisible Ink--Confessions of a Ghostwriter (Co-Author): Cal Orey
Confessions of a Ghostwriter
By Cal Orey
I am a ghostwriter. I am often on the job writing books for someone else. For example, writing as a military wife, I dished out heartfelt feelings in a woman’s magazine about my husband’s service in Iraq. Writing as a witty English doctor, I prescribe anti-aging secrets in a self-help book. Writing as my sensitive mixed-breed cat, I dispense advice to pets and humans in a bimonthly horoscope column.
In the past year I've co-authored novels: Romance, True Crime, Sci-Fi, and Historical Fiction. Currently, I just finished a Carl Sagan type of science book. I'm wrapping up a contemporary romance novel. Truth be told, I've cried many times during the Romeo and Juliet-ish work. And I've fallen in love with the characters. And for the next few weeks, I'll be fine-tuning a New Age super creative novella that is mind blowing! It will give you chills. Yes, co-author credit will be granted to me.
Sound like fun? For writers who don’t mind losing a byline, ghostwriting is an interesting and potentially lucrative career option. Here are five reasons why you should consider this often-overlooked writing path.
1 Interesting assignments
Ever wish you were someone else? As a ghostwriter, you can live your dream vicariously—without having to get credentials or be reincarnated. Being a “ghost” is like channeling into someone else’s body and mind. For example, I write for my 5-year-old cat, Kerouac, who pens the column “What Do the Stars Hold for Your Pet?” for a pet magazine. Not only is his name on the masthead, each column pays for his premium cat food and toys.
Eric Neuhaus, a New York ghostwriter, did the writing and more for a book by fitness guru Joe Decker As part of the assignment, Neuhaus and a diet consultant cooked up healthy versions of traditionally unhealthy dishes such and meatloaf and fajitas. “The kitchen in my one-bedroom apartment became the test kitchen,” Neuhaus says. “I bought another book on how to write recipes. All of this was trail by fire. I never thought in m wildest dreams that I’d be testing recipes.”
Ghost Tip: “If you enjoy people, ghostwriting is a way to delve into some of the most unusual people on the planet,” says Marc L. Weber, a former ghostwriter.
2 An occasional credit
When I was assigned the Iraq article for Complete Woman, I collected the very personal first-person narratives of two military wives, using their unique voices to put together their heart-warming tales. I received an “as told to” author credit.
Ghost Tip: If you think the book has potential to be a bestseller, request co-author credit. But if the project is an author’s tool (i.e., selling products), credit isn’t a big deal.
3 Appreciative clients
“One of the most surprising facts I have learned about ghostwriting is that there are some extremely intelligent people out there who cannot put anything onto paper,” Habert says. “For some reason, somewhere between the thought process and the actual movements of their pen or fingers on keyboard, they become babbling fools.”
In my ghostwritten book on anti-aging, I noticed while the doctor had good command of the English language, his prose tended to be dry. I was hired to “dumb down” his health advice and product information. And the doctor appreciated my ability to do just that.
Ghost Tip: “You have to check your ego at the door,” cautions Deborah Kotz of Silver Spring, Md., who has worked as a ghostwriter on several health books. “Realize that you are the ‘writer’ and not the ‘author.’ There’s a big difference between the two. You are not the authority. So, you have to convey the message that the author wants to convey.”
4 Big-money potential
Some book advances can make you smile. Case in point: I just signed a book contract for a five-figure deal, travel expenses and bonuses. For the next five months, I will feel financially secure as I ghostwrite about a fascinating and controversial topic. How rich is that?
Ghost Tip: “If you think the book isn’t going to get that six-figure advance, settle on a fee upfront for your services,” Neuhaus says. “If you think it is going to be a blockbuster project, then negotiate a percentage of the advance and royalties.”
5 Unlimited prospects
The best part of ghostwriting is that it’s like a deep well that never goes dry. Habert understands the glory of ghostwriting. “It is a lucrative source of writing, not only in a monetary manner but also in the volume available,” she says. Weber adds that a baby boomers age, “that generation becomes interested in holding on to its memories, so there is more work for ghostwriters to do than ever before.”
Ghost Tip: “Network as much as you can,” Weber says. “Make sure people know you have the talent to help them."
Each in his or her own way, Habert, Weber and Neuhaus have discovered that ghostwriting is a good avenue to a never-ending road of projects. You, too, can arrive at that point. Just put on your mask and go to "No revisions" in the agreement. A dentist to hair stylist may make minor tweaks--but countless changes? Not a chance.
Work It Tips for the Writer (and Client)
Get it in writing: “If you’re going to collaborate, you’re going to need a written contract or agreement that spells out who does what and how much you get—and when,” Neuhaus says.
Tackle Tasks: Outlines, restructuring and crafting, developing characters, writing prologues, cliffhanger chapters, and WOW endings, settings, description, dialogue -- and much more! A client may have notes or the entire manuscript written but it still may need SOS!
Develop a specialty: “Whether it’s fitness or fashion, write about what you love and have a passion for,” says New York City ghostwriter Eric Neuhaus.
Network with other ‘ghosts’: Often, ghostwriters will be busy with projects and may refer clients to you for a finder’s fee.
Discuss the editing process: If you want to avoid ghoulish re-dos, talk with the author about edits and ongoing revisions before you begin. Personally, I have incorporated the phrase: No revisions, no refunds. You are free to delete and add details. P.S. Re-dos are offered but they're not for free.
Remember, everyone has at least one book in them: It’s your job to connect mentally and emotionally with someone who wants to hire a ghost—namely, you.
