Inhale Time

Three months into the 2016, and I’ve been doing a lot of reading. I’ve been neglecting my ever-growing reading list for too long, and it looms over me still, growing taller by the second. There are so many stories to read, a hundred thousand different lives to experience, a million new shoes to walk in. I spent most of last year scribbling stories in a frenzied state, outlining plots and sketching out storylines. My brain was operating in Write-Or-Die mode. There was no middle ground. Granted...

Review – A Night in the Lonesome October

A Night in Lonesome October

How many familiar faces can you spot in that cover?

In the days of October before the night of Halloween, a group of magicians gather with their familiars to prepare for the Great Game. The players may be Openers or Closers. None of them know who is an ally and who is an enemy. The familiars work amongst themselves for information and knowledge, watching their masters and drawing up the patterns for the final fateful night. Loyalties are tested, deals are forged and broken, players are hunted...

Novelty

A streak of blue rests within the volumes of her hair: a teasing girlish quirk in contrast to the quietness of her gaze over the world passing before and around her.

Her eyes are steady. Her face is calm. Her colors beckon to you, you in your grey-toned world. You watch her like she is fulcrum and focal point, like the universe spins around her and her alone. She is unique and beautiful and so far beyond the boundaries of reality. You’ve been waiting for her your whole life. She is a goddess...

On the Subject of Writing Women

12-1

During my occasional net trawling adventures, I’ve come across articles and writing discussions on the topic of ‘How to Write a Female Character’. It’s often linked up with it’s equally popular cousin, ‘How to Write a Strong Female Character’, most often talked about in the science fiction and fantasy communities, where gun-toting, sword-wielding, karate-chopping ladies with flowing hair, rocking bods, and impractical armor are commonplace.

Not that there’s anything wrong with gun-toting or...

Ushering in the New Year

http://www.tajmahaltripindia.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2013/12/new-year.jpg

With pomp and glory and circumstance and a whole load of projects sitting on my back like the heavens and earth on dear old Atlas’s shoulders. Okay, maybe not that much, but still, it’s a pretty exciting list. I meant to put this out a lot earlier, but a bunch of other things got in the way, some of which are mentioned below.

So, what happened in 2014?

Writing-wise, this year was one of beginnings. I published my first novel. The Falcon’s Eye started out as a pet project when I was 15, before I...

50 Things I Have Looked Up So Far For My Most Recent Project

I have ended up learning a whole lot of random stuff I might never have looked up otherwise while writing out this new story of mine. Right now, I’m about 60 000 words in, nowhere near finished, and have listed below fifty different things (among others), all equally interesting and informative, that I ended up researching while writing this down.

Thank you, Internet.

50 Things I Researched While Writing My New Project

1. Llama gods

2. Turkish breakfasts (biiiiiig ones)

3. The naval battle of...

We Need Diverse Books

I realize this campaign has been going on for a while, but I’m only now finally sitting down to write about it. I first came across it on Facebook, where I saw John Green’s message to writers and readers, after which I started following the campaign more closely and realizing how many of the popular books in the market that people devour and drown themselves in lack that simple thing.

While I was growing up, I always had a fancy for folk tales and fairy tales, stories of legend and mythology,...
