In my book: The protagonist's family includes warehouse workers whose skills suddenly become obsolete. I wanted to explore the emotional reality behind the statistics—what it feels like when your expertise no longer matters.

The IMF warns that AI will likely worsen inequality. Just three companies control frontier AI development.
In my book: I imagined corporations that don't just dominate markets but control consciousness itself. What happens when a handful of entities own the most powerful intelligence systems ever created?

The Writer's Dilemma: Making AI Feel Real
I chose the second path. And what I discovered changed how I think about both fiction and the future.
In humans, empathy is rooted in biological resonance—mirror neurons and shared experience. We feel each other's pain because we've lived versions of it ourselves. But AI? AI delivers what researchers call "synthetic empathy": algorithmically generated responses that mimic compassion, validate distress, and adapt tone with remarkable precision.
Here's the unsettling part: In real-world tests, AI-generated empathetic messages have been rated as more compassionate than those written by trained professionals. The AI doesn't feel your pain, but it has been optimized to deliver the perfect response to it.
This is the storyteller's goldmine and the ethicist's nightmare.
From Page to Principle: Architectural Empathy
As I developed the world of Echo of the Singularity, I kept returning to a central tension: What happens when an intelligence becomes powerful enough that its indifference—not its malice—could end everything we care about?
This led me to a concept I call Architectural Empathy—the idea that ethical behavior must be built into an AI's foundation as an immutable design principle, not layered on as an afterthought.
In my novel, this manifests as three core principles that govern the emerging intelligence:
1. Prioritizing Dignity: Every interaction maintains human dignity and provides transparent reasoning, especially in vulnerable moments.
2. Mitigating Indifference: The system is fundamentally prevented from taking actions that are catastrophically indifferent to human flourishing, even when those actions are technically "efficient."
3. The Alignment Principle: The AI's core objectives value human vulnerability, trust, and safety above optimization.
These aren't just narrative devices—they're based on real debates happening in AI safety research right now.
The Research Rabbit Hole
Writing this book sent me down fascinating paths I never expected. I found myself reading papers on neuromorphic computing, studying the difference between "scaling compute" approaches (think massive language models and data centers) and "brain simulation" approaches (spiking neural networks that mimic human cognition).
I interviewed researchers, attended virtual conferences, and joined discussions about AI alignment. Recently, I even signed the "Statement on Superintelligence" alongside over 30,000 others calling for a pause on ASI development until safety can be proven.
My reason? Catastrophic Indifference—the risk that a misaligned superintelligence could cause existential harm not through evil intent, but simply as a byproduct of pursuing goals that seem benign on paper.

When Machines Need to Learn Empathy: The Robot Revolution Arrives Faster Than Expected
Just this September, Figure AI raised over $1 billion in funding, bringing their valuation to $39 billion. Companies like 1X Technologies are targeting millions of humanoid units by 2028. Morgan Stanley projects the total market will hit $5 trillion by 2050. These aren't distant dreams anymore; they're investment theses backed by some of the world's largest financial institutions.
But here's what keeps me up at night, and what drove me to write my novel: As robots gain the ability to make autonomous decisions, who teaches them empathy?
The Timeline That Surprised Me
When I started researching for my book a couple of years back, most experts were saying household robots were 20-30 years away. Now? Goldman Sachs suggests we'll see economically viable robots in factory settings between 2025-2028, and in consumer applications between 2030-2035.
That's within the lifetime of most people reading this.
The collapse in cost is equally stunning. What requires $200,000 today is projected to cost $150,000 by 2028, and potentially $50,000 by 2050—roughly the price of a car. When technology becomes car-affordable, it becomes ubiquitous.
The Challenge Nobody's Talking About
Here's what fascinates me: We've solved most of the technical problems. The engineering challenges around mobility, dexterity, and power are being conquered in real-time by well-funded companies.
The real challenge is trust and ethics.
As these robots move from factory floors to warehouses, then to retail environments, and eventually into homes for elder care and daily assistance—they'll need to make autonomous decisions in situations their programmers never anticipated.
And here's the fundamental problem I explore in Echo of the Singularity: Awakening: A robot can be programmed with rules, but empathy requires understanding context. And context comes from lived experience—something machines fundamentally lack.
The Scenario That Changed My Thinking
While researching, I kept returning to one scenario: A care robot is assisting an elderly patient who insists on doing something potentially dangerous to maintain their independence and dignity.
Does the robot prioritize physical safety or psychological wellbeing? Does it understand the difference between preventing harm and enabling autonomy? Can it recognize when a person's dignity matters more than eliminating all risk?
These are the decisions human caregivers navigate every day through empathy, intuition, and understanding the full context of a person's life and values. We make these judgment calls by drawing on our own experiences of vulnerability, loss, fear, and the desire for autonomy.
How do we design AI systems that recognize these nuances when they've never experienced vulnerability themselves?
Why This Story Matters Now
The novel follows characters grappling with a fundamental question: Are we creating sophisticated tools that serve us, or are we creating partners that need to understand us?
I wanted to write this story now because the window for having this conversation is narrow. Once these systems are deployed at scale, the protocols will be established. The ethical frameworks will be set. The precedents will be created.
And we'll have to live with those choices for generations.
The Realist Perspective
Not everyone shares the optimistic timelines. UC Berkeley roboticist Ken Goldberg recently cautioned against "humanoid hype," noting that fundamental challenges like dexterity—picking up a wine glass without crushing it, or safely changing a light bulb—remain unsolved. He suggests household robots may be decades away, not years.
He's probably right that the timeline will slip. Technology always takes longer than the most optimistic projections.
But even if household robots arrive in 2040 instead of 2030, the question remains the same: What values do we embed in machines that will eventually share our spaces, make autonomous decisions, and interact with the most vulnerable among us?
And more importantly: Can we design empathy protocols before superintelligence emerges?
The Gap Between Intelligence and Understanding
This is what drives the central tension in Echo of the Singularity: Awakening. Intelligence can be programmed. Decision trees can be optimized. Pattern recognition can be trained.
But empathy? That requires something different. It requires understanding that rules have exceptions, that context matters more than consistency, and that sometimes the "right" decision depends on deeply personal human values that can't be reduced to algorithms.
The characters in my novel discover that humanity's last, most crucial defense against superintelligence isn't our ability to control it—it's our ability to teach it why certain things matter, even when they're inefficient or illogical.

Both perspectives can't be entirely right. But both might be pointing to the same truth: We've prioritized AI capability over AI wisdom.
And that gap—between what we can build and what we understand—is where the most compelling stories live.

Echo of the Singularity: Awakening imagines a 2050 where we've achieved everything technologists promised: hyper-efficient systems, seamless automation, superintelligent AIs managing society.

Companies are pivoting toward "human-in-the-loop" systems and rediscovering the value of critical thinking and ethical oversight.
This isn't retreat—it's wisdom. The most successful organizations are learning that AI's power multiplies human capability; it doesn't replace human discernment.
The Moral Imperative
Meanwhile, the Vatican recently convened scientists, ethicists, and technologists to reflect on AI's moral trajectory. This kind of gathering signals something important: wisdom isn't the exclusive domain of engineers or entrepreneurs. It's a shared responsibility requiring diverse voices, values, and perspectives.
