An adult model and a money laundering biker dude aren't exactly what comes to mind as a power couple when I think of romance. Written in first person from two different characters' POVs, the first two chapters threw me off a little. However, once I got used to the set-up, the story and the writing flowed seamlessly.
Rex and Lacy are not your usually romance hero and heroine, but the author makes them relatable and well-rounded with solid backgrounds and motivations. Given that the hero was such an unapologetic bad guy, imagine my surprise when I found myself really liking him. Rex and Lacy were so well-matched that I couldn't help rooting for them through all the trouble that came their way. When I say trouble, spell it with a capital T.
They find themselves in the middle of a turf war as they struggle to keep her safe and hold on to everything Rex and the Disciples have worked hard for. A new police chief eager to mark territory makes things infinitely worse. As they overcome challenges, new issues come up leading to a roller-coaster reading experience. I haven't enjoyed a book this much in ages.
All I can say is, what a ride (pun totally intended)!

AJ Adams writes twisted love stories set in the violent world of the Cartel, Camorra, Belial's MC and Prydain.
AJ Adams novels are self-standing and although some feature the same families, you need not read them all - but it would be awesome if you did.

Refuge in his Arms by Lizzie Ashworth #BookReview

MY REVIEW
Except that all electronic machines, including cars, stop working! She' stuck with a devastatingly handsome stranger with a devil-may-care attitude who is the opposite of the husband she lost. However, their attraction to each other cannot be denied. As they try to navigate the new undesirable place their world has become, and find somewhere they belong, survival instincts take over.
The author does well in getting reader into her characters' heads to understand where they are coming from and what motivates them; their inner struggles make then empathetic as they grow over the course of the story.
I won't lie. I'm not a huge fan of dystopian tropes, and I got a little tired of the one disaster after another, but it was also what made it easy to understand how Mac and David (and everybody else must have felt). David and Mac had great chemistry even when they were denying it. Their eventual submission to their desires was more than satisfactory!
I'd have liked to know what happened to Mac's parents. I'll leave it at this since saying more would mean dropping spoilers.
If you enjoy end-of-the-world storylines, likable character's with great chemistry, and hot sex scenes, then this one's right up your alley

Prah, Constantine and Baryeh Reviews: Wicked for Hire by Lotta Smith #PCBReviews
Hi folks. Another second month comes with a brand new 3-in-1 review. We went for something fun and paranormal - Wicked for Hire (Paranormal in Manhattan Mystery: A Cozy Mystery on Kindle Unlimited Book 1)
Sometimes, the opportunity of a lifetime comes bustin' your door... without even offering to pay for the damages...
Medical student Amanda Meyer thought she had her life all planned out until people started dying the moment they touched her. Being cleared of any wrongdoing didn’t stop the medical school from expelling her, and it didn’t rid her of the unfortunate nickname Grim Reaper.
Luckily, having a rep as the harbinger of death isn’t a total resume killer. Rick Rowling, Special Agent for the FBI’s Paranormal Cases Division recruits her to work for the Bureau as a resident witch. But the sexy, brilliant, outrageous loose cannon proves to be just as untouchable as the mysterious creature or creatures that may be responsible for the seemingly unsolvable murder that becomes their first case together.
Instead of treating patients, Amanda’s life becomes a test of her patience and a wild ride into the wicked paranormal world where her new boss runs the show. Together they face a ghoulish force that could destroy the entire city and a grueling family dinner that could leave Amanda contemplating harakiri.
It’s a battle of life and debt [student debt, that is] and saving the world has never been so funny.
Wicked for Hire is part of the Paranormal in Manhattan Mystery series. If you If you like fast-paced mysteries full of quirky characters and unexpected twists, you're gonna love this series. Perfect for fans of Amy Boyles, Jana DeLeon, Janet Evanovich and Carl Hiaasen!
My Review
The cover was one of the first things that caught my attention! Gorgeous and fun. Wicked for Hire is a fast-paced story that introduces us to Amanda Meyer, who needs a job after being expelled from medical school. She ends up at the FBI’s Paranormal Cases Division working for, Rick Rowling, the man responsible for her dismissal from medical school.
What I liked most about the story was the main characters. They were fun, quirky, and well-matched. Even Rick Rowland who is practical to a fault and comically egotistical made me laugh in several places. The premise of the story was also interesting. The length of the story made it possible to deal with one case, although I would have wished for a longer story with a secondary plot.
I felt Character backgrounds could have been beefed up. At the very least I would have liked to know how Mandy got her abilities. Were they inherited? Does anyone else in her family have the same abilities? How did Rick get into solving paranormal cases? Does he have some ability besides a high IQ (this is not actually stated in the story). How did the Paranormal Cases Division of the FBI even get started?
Overall, I enjoyed the story and would be interested in reading the rest of the series. I hope some of my questions get answered in the subsequent installments.
Disclaimer; I purchased my copy of the book for Amazon.
Don't forget to check the other two reviews from Prah and Constantine.

Slowly, they rose up and made their way back to the couch more steadily than she could have hoped for.
Settling him down, she sat by his side, concern pervading her every pore. “How are you feeling?”
He cursed softly. “Like I’m floating.”
I’m so sorry. I shouldn’t have let you—”
“Kiss you?” His lips stretched out faintly. “I’d collapse a thousand times to kiss you again.”
His words roused all those wicked thoughts in her mind again, even though she wasn’t about to let him try.
He must have seen her guilty expression. “Don’t worry, I’ll be fine.”_________________________________________________________________________

3 Things To Avoid When Writing about the dreaded Ex #WritingTips

It got me thinking about past relationships - we all have them and in many cases they even define who we've become. So it makes sense that romance heroes and heroines have past relationships that have played a role in defining who they are.
But what's the best way to handle the dreaded ex in romance novels? There may not be a 'best way' to handle exes, but there are a few things I think authors should endeavour to avoid.
Before I go further, let me start off by saying these tips are entirely my personal opinion (and not backed by any formal research). Number 2, these are only tips - I have, in fact, broken at least one of these rules before, but it was a conscious decision, which I believe was critical to the plot:
(For Pete's sake) Don't start the novel with the ex. To me, this is a no-no. If the book is about Peter and Dora, I don't want to start with Peter and Susan's toxic relationship, or Dora and her undeserving ex.
Don't dedicate a chapter to the ex. Again, the story is about your hero and heroine, a flashback to a past relationship is okay, but it doesn't need an entire chapter, even if it's not chapter 1.
Don't stereotype the ex: I get so tired of reading about bitchy ex-girlfriends and abusive ex-boyfriends. Yes, they exist, and, no, they must not be ignored, but they aren't the only kinds of exes. There are people who just don't work out, not because they are evil, but because they weren't meant to be.
One of my favourite movies is The Wedding Planner (because... Matthew McConaughey, duh! ♡). The thing that stood out for me the most was the fact that Bridgette Wilson's character wasn't your typical bitch. She was actually a very nice woman, which added to the hero's conflict. Why would he even fall for someone else when his fiancée is such a great girl? That equals conflict!
So there you have it - my top 3 things to avoid when writing about the ex in a romance novel. Agree? Disagree? Any personal tips to add? Please leave me a comment.
