COVER REVEAL: A Divine Life

Over the past year of being Jayden Masterson’s collared submissive, Catherine O’Chancey has worked through the mental terrors left behind by her old Dom — or at least she thinks she has. To celebrate their collaring anniversary, Jayden organizes a special day, during which her final fantasies will be realized and her limits tested. Will it prove to be more than she can handle? Can she endure the erotic onslaught her mind and body will experience and survive unscathed? While Catherine faces these dark shadows and pleasurable highs, Jayden will find his own inner strength being tested, too. He has come to realize that, somewhere along the way, Catherine has taken possession of his heart, mind, and body. Now, he faces his biggest challenge ever; he must let go of all his submissives but one: his jewel, Catherine. Can he leave his philandering ways behind? Has he made the ultimate mistake by putting his jewel into the hands of others? Will his gift to Catherine wind up costing him the one thing that has ever meant something real to him?Jayden has helped Catherine heal from past wrongs and chase away the nightmares. In return, Catherine has shown him what it means to care for someone beyond mere sexual gratification. Their strengthening bond as Master and submissive has paved the way for deeper emotions — if they can find the courage to open up to each other.Join Catherine and Jayden for an emotion packed weekend that could forever change the future of their relationship. This could be their best chance at love, but first both Dom and sub must gain control over the one thing they can’t put in a collar: their deepest doubts and fears. For this kind of healing, the necessary treatment must be mutually given. Is it too late to erase some old scars?

Mountain Charm Release Day Blitz!

Today is release day for Sydney Logan’s novel, Mountain Charm! To celebrate, we have two awesome giveaways, including a signed copy of Mountain Charm and a $100 Amazon Gift Card!
At the age of thirteen, Angelina Clark followed in the footsteps of her ancestors by casting an Appalachian love spell, which promised she would blossom into a beautiful and gifted woman who would find her true love. A young Angelina had been thrilled to participate in the sacred ritual, but through the years, her father’s untimely death and her mother’s failing health have shaken Angelina’s magical faith to its core. As her twenty-first birthday approaches, she refuses to practice her supernatural gifts and no longer believes in the love charm. That is, until Dylan Thomas arrives on her front porch. Dylan, a Nashville writer, travels to the mountain town of Maple Ridge to unearth the family’s supernatural secrets. While her clairvoyant mother is convinced that Dylan is her daughter’s soul mate, Angelina refuses to see the nosy reporter as anything more than a nuisance. Despite their constant bickering, sparks fly. Dylan admits he feels strangely drawn to Angelina and is in no hurry to leave Maple Ridge or publish his magazine article. Fearful that his emotions are being influenced by the spell, a stubborn Angelina struggles to fight her own budding attraction to the reporter. The two inevitably grow closer just as her mother’s health begins to deteriorate, and Angelina is faced with the possibility of selling the family’s music shop to pay the mounting medical expenses. Desperate to help the woman he loves, Dylan explores his own family tree and finds support from an unlikely source. Can he finally prove his love is real—spell or no spell? A story filled with love, friendship, family, and just a hint of Appalachian magic, Mountain Charm will leave you spellbound.

REVIEW: FIREWORKS

Summary:
Sophie McKibbin finds herself back in Sam Crawford’s life after ten years. Unfortunately, Sam is dating Lola, Sophie’s high school nemesis. Lola dumps Sam the day before he was supposed to introduce his mystery girlfriend to his family over the Fourth of July holiday. With the looming fear of disappointing his mother once again and his long held feelings for Sophie, he asks her to take Lola’s place. With family feuds, an old flame, and feelings that have been locked away for a decade, there is bound to be some fireworks.
My Review:
I was lucky enough to get to read Fireworks before it came out. Fireworks is an amazing novella full of love, heartache, and healing. Sophie and Sam have both experienced a lifetime of hurt because they couldn't be together due to various obstacles. When they find each other again, they instantly form a strong friendship, while fighting with their re-ignited feelings for one another, and the fact that Sam is seeing Lola.
When Sam and Lola break up, the chance to be with Sophie presents itself, and he takes it. Though it's not easy, Sam and Sophie find their way along the journey stronger and happier than ever before. I highly recommend this novella to anyone looking for a short, sweet summer read!

Block 24

Blurb

Natalie Clarke might be spiteful at best and vicious at worst, but was that reason enough for Phillip Gise to leave her lonely and diseased? Fortunately, she has a set of devious plans that just might keep her busy enough to forget her present situation.

Guy Lewis has played Best Friend Extraordinaire to Natalie since grade school, supporting her through all of her daily drama. This time around, Guy runs into his own troubles when his fierce, wealthy manager gives him the type of attention he never asked for…or expected.

Julia Clarke, Natalie’s younger sister, has arrived in Brooklyn to uncover their grandmother’s secret life in Block 24, the site of Auschwitz’s little-known brothel. What Julia discovers proves more relevant in the present age than ever before.

Both heady and sobering, Block 24 is a look at the ways evil from the past can so insidiously visit the present.

Block 24 Chapter Three Excerpt

Philip lay back on the bed, resettling the pillow behind his head and crossing his feet at the end of the bed.  Natalie stared at his toes.  “You know,” he said, “my mother went a little crazy when she found out I wasn't a virgin anymore. She sent me to a priest.” He chuckled. “I was nineteen. ”Natalie gasped. “What, is she insane? Or just a slut-shamer?”Philip climbed up to her end of the bed, lying on his side in front of her, his face a kiss away from hers.  “Neither. She raised me with a lot of faith values. Church every Sunday. Sacraments. Catholic school. All of it.”  He looked at her carefully, sliding a stray eyelash from beneath her eye and staring at it on his index finger. “My dad and mom left their countries to practice their faith freely. It’s a big deal to them.”Natalie dropped her eyes. “What about their kids? They can’t expect you guys to be who they are. Or believe what they believe.”“They do. I'm still a Catholic, baby.” He laughed. “A pretty fucked up one, but still. And all three of my sisters are still virgins.”She looked back up. “How do you know that?”“Male intuition.”She shook her head.  “So, what about me? Could you tell I was a whore when you first met me?”Philip gave a short laugh, shaking his head, rolling his eyes, ultimately dismissing the question. “My mother and father were both virgins when they married. Kinda wild, when I think about it.”Natalie humphed  “Not wild. The exact opposite of wild, really. And while I’m sure that your parents' so-called purity really impresses you, I hate to break it to you—they're not virgins anymore.”“What gave that away?” He smiled.Natalie wanted with all her indignant heart to wilt that smile. “I’m sure they enjoy their sex life. Sure your dad gets some even more than you do. Sure your mom's a super freak.  It aint a crime, Philip.”“She’s married, Nat.” “And you’re not,” she said, mocking his stillness with her syrupy, school-teacher voice.  “You’re not them. We're not your fucking parents.  We’ve got no reason to feel bad. You've got absolutely no reason to feel guilty.”  She went suddenly into crude mode, her voice gruff and loud.  “You’re Philip Fucking Gise.  The original PG.”He looked down, his eyelashes casting a shadow right below his eyes. “Well, we both could afford to be a little more G-rated, Nat.  Come on,  baby, let’s get up.”She reached for his wrist before he could slide off the bed. “If I'm such a whore, why are you with me? Why do you fuck with me? Better yet, why do you fuck me? There are enough girls like Julia in the world. You could go find one.” He looked at her, solemn. “We're not gonna have this talk, Natalie.” He stood up. “It's getting late.”

Block 24 Chapter Six Excerpt

“So,”said Philip, awaking Natalie with a whisper, “you dug the movie?”She lifted her head from his shoulder and set her feet on top of the seat in front of her. “I dig anything with Brad Pitt.”“Yeah?” he responded, looking down at her, smirking.  “Well, I dig anything with Angelina.”Natalie bit her lip, meeting his eyes. Yes, she was momentarily jealous but not feeling combative. In fact, she was in the mood for a flirt fest. She laughed. “You're not the only one. I'd make a scissor sandwich with that broad any day of the week.”Philip reached for her legs, laying them on  top of his lap. “Nah. I don't see that happening. Brad's obviously got that on lock.”Natalie stared down at her cream leggings over his dark blue jeans.  She had worn a tiny leather skirt but included the leggings so that Philip would not see how pale her legs were. It was early spring, and she hadn't spent any real time in the sun yet. Bare legs would have looked better beneath the skirt, but she had turned the outfit into something Bohemian-like to redeem it, pairing the shorts and leggings with a loose cream blouse, seven bangles, and a brown packer hat. She hoped now, with her legs on top of his lap, he could appraise the length of them. She wanted him to want her in the worst way. By then, he hadn't made certain that he did.“So, you don't think I can break up Brangelina?” Natalie asked, crossing her arms over her chest. “I've got mad skills, Gise. Obviously you don't know me very well yet.”“Did you just say Brangelina?” he asked, laughing and shaking his head. He caressed her lower legs. “What are you—a Star! news reporter?”“And if I was?” she asked, reaching forward, grabbing the center of his collared shirt, pretending as though she would rough him up. She smiled. “Brangelina' is a very efficient term. Saves a lot of syllables. It's genius, really.”He grabbed the center of her blouse, drawing her even closer. She could feel his soft breath on her lips. “So, what would that make us?” he whispered. “'Natlip?'”She grinned, staring at his lips. “No. That would make us 'Phatalie.'”He squeezed his eyes shut, laughing quietly. He let go of her shirt and clutched her lower back. “I like that, baby. It's got potential. Her stomach fluttered. It was the first time he had called her baby, and he said it with the Johnny Depp deep, lazy voice that made her toes curl in her sneakers. Plus, if she wasn't mistaken, his use of “potential” referred to more than a hybrid name.“That's right,” said Natalie. “It's gonna be 'Phatalie. Because we're phat. P-H-A-T. Pretty Hot And Tempting.”He tickled her waist. “Did you just quote a movie?” “Yep. Money Talks. It's the one with Charlie Sheen.” She rubbed her hands quickly up and down his cheeks, as though she were warming his bare face. “My mom took Guy and I to see it when we were younger.”“Guy?” He circled her wrists loosely and clapped her hands together. “Who's that?”“He's my best friend.”Philip nodded, looking down at her legs. After a moment's silence, he looked back up. “So, you quote movies with ease, eh?”“I do a lot of things with ease,” she returned, moving his hands to her thighs. He took a deep breath and ran his tongue over his lips. “I'm sure.” He slid his hands from her thighs to her ankles, a safer region. Natalie wondered what he was trying to do...or avoid doing. For the sake of her pride, she retreated. “I would tell you what I do with ease,” she said before turning on a pitiful Jack Nicholson impersonation,“but you can't handle the truth.”He breathed out a short laugh, his hands creeping up her legs once more. “Well, show me the money.”She wrinkled her brows, laughing and setting her hands at the back of his head. She looked into his eyes. They twinkled in amusement. “What the fuck?” she said. “You can't just quote a random movie line. It has to at least make sense in the context of the conversation.”“Where the hell did these rules come from?” he asked, reacting for her hat, taking it off her head, and spinning it on his middle finger like a basketball. “Gotta know the rules to play the game, Gise.”“But you don't get to make up all the rules.”“Actually, I do.” She held his face. “I get to do whatever I want.”He buried his face into her neck, sniffing. “Do I smell a diva?” “Diva? No need for sly terms, sir. Diva is a bitch in sequins, right? I'm dressed down today.” She giggled as Philip rubbed his nose deeper into her neck. “Sometimes being a bitch is all a woman has to hold on to.”“Dolores Claiborne.” He kissed her jaw, then the apple of her cheek.  “I saw that one.”“It's my favorite movie quote of all time.”“Real legit, N.C,” he whispered, employing the Johnny Depp lazy tone again. He rubbed her cheek with his own. “Guess nobody puts Baby in a corner, huh?”“Nice usage,” Natalie replied, rubbing his cheek back against his and closing her eyes. Had a man ever felt this good?  “Plus, I am actually a bitch, Gise.” She felt his lips with her finger. “There's nothing good about me, see; suppose that's what makes me so great.”He spun her hat on his finger once more before letting it fall. “Don't recognize that line. What movie is it?” “I made that one up myself. You like?” She separated her cheek from his, looking him in the eyes, grinning.Philip smiled in response and reached for her waist, pulling her over to him and settling her on his lap. Her feet dangled just above the ground as he pressed the nape of her neck with his fingertips and brought her forward to his lips. He pressed his mouth over hers, holding her face in place with one hand. He moved with finesse, easy but eager, his lips making fluent sweeps over hers, sometimes gently tugging at her bottom lip and at other times, hungrily sucking on her top lip. Her legs swung back in forth with his motion, intermittently bobbing against the seat like a hyper child. He pressed his fingers lightly into her cheek, pushing her mouth open and  slipping his tongue inside. His saliva tasted like peppermint; Natalie realized then that he had bought the chocolate peppermint candies at the popcorn stand for this moment.  He knew exactly what he was doing, and she wondered what had taken him so long to do it, to give her this full-fledged kiss. She was sure that this would be the defining kiss—the one a woman waited for to prove that  a kiss really had the power to awaken a sleeping beauty. He deserved an award for his ability to warm her coolness. She grew desperate for him, but for every attempt she made to speed  up the kiss, he held her face still, taking his time to savor her mouth. He bundled the back of her shirt with one hand, pulling her backward slightly and moving forward to give himself an edge over her. She wrapped her arms around his neck, wondering if after these two months together, their first time would be right there in the empty movie theater. In that case, she wondered how she would disguise the paleness of her legs when he pulled her leggings down. While she thought on these things, he brought the kiss to an end, giving her one soft peck before opening his eyes and mouthing,“I'm the king of the world.”She smiled. “Titanic.”He tucked her hair behind her ear “Nah. I made that one up on my own.”

ExcerptWhen Sam’s phone beeped with a text message, he took it out to read. It was Lola letting him know she was going to bed after her study session and to say goodnight. He slipped it back into his pocket and realized before anything else happened, he needed to fess up.
“Um, Sophie?”
“Yes, Sam.” She sipped on her milkshake.
“Do you remember Lola Dennison?”
Sophie knew exactly whom he was talking about and her distaste showed on her face. “Yes, she was a class below me and Caroline. Why?”
“She’s getting her Master’s in Child Psych, and we bumped into each other while she was doing her clinical rotation. We’ve been dating for a couple months.” Sam watched as Sophie’s eyes turned the shade of ice blue, and she scrunched up her face.
“Does Caroline know?” Sophie tried to rein in her anger, but was having a difficult time.
“No, I haven’t told anybody yet. I guess her mom and my mom had a big falling out years ago, and it’s still pretty rocky between them. We kind of want to see where it goes before we bring the families into it.”
Sophie’s gut twisted in unimaginable ways. The younger and more popular Lola bullied Sophie and Caroline for three years during high school. Caroline never stood up for herself, but Sophie, on the other hand, gave as good as she got. That caused more than a few tussles in the Halston High hallways.
She calmed herself down and took a deep breath. “I see.”
“You don’t approve?”
“Um . . .” Sophie looked up at him as his question hung in the air. “It’s really none of my business. But when you do tell Caroline, make sure you’re alone. The two of them didn’t get along well.”
“Lola’s never said anything.” Sam wondered what could have happened between the two.
“She probably doesn’t want to think about it.” Sophie dropped her chin to her chest and mumbled, “I know don’t want to.”
“What?”
“Nothing. Look, thanks for dinner. I really needed something greasy like this after tonight.”
Sam could tell she was ready to leave so he reached for the bill folder. “No problem. I wouldn’t mind hanging out again. That offer for drinks is still on the table.”  He stuffed some cash in the bill folder and placed it back on the table.
“Yeah, we’ll talk later.” Sophie smiled while trying to stop her heart from hurting.
“I’d like that.” He meant it, too.
Sam knew that dating Lola was a risk, but knew he couldn’t pass up the chance to have Sophie in his life.

She lives with her husband, kids and one crazy mutt in Casper, WY. She enjoys reading, writing, computing and graphic design. She looks forward to writing many more romance novels with wonderful, loving characters.
Excerpt:
“Alex, I don’t think we should talk about this. My life is fine, yours is fine. Let’s just leave it at that.” The three hardest sentences she would ever utter.
“If that’s what you want,” he whispered. “When you’re done with your soup I’ll take you back to the ship.” He’d been prepared to fight for her, but now for some reason, his fight was gone.
“I’m done, I guess we should go now.”
“Okay.” He answered.
The ride to the dock wasn’t a pleasant one. The tension was thicker than the fog that rolls in off the ocean. Neither of them had the courage to say much of anything so they rode along in awkward silence. When Alex stopped the truck, he reached over and grabbed her hand. “Today meant a lot to me Olivia, if you ever need anything, you know where to find me.”
“Thank you.” A bittersweet smile crossed her face. “Today meant a lot to me too.”
“Give me your phone, Doll,” Alex demanded.
She didn’t question it, she just handed it over. He typed something into hers and then something into his and handed it back.
He leaned over and kissed her gently. “Goodbye again, Olivia.”
“Goodbye Alex,” she whispered. She hopped down out of the truck and sprinted across the street and when she turned to wave goodbye, he was next to his vehicle waving back at her.
Olivia made it across the gangplank and through security before the tears came and she was blissfully alone in the elevator as it climbed to deck six.

La Cala by N. Wood

Today I am lucky to have N. Wood by my blog. Not only is she publishing with Renaissance Romance Publishing in the fall, but she's self-published a couple of books, also. Today, she joins me to discuss her latest: La Cala.

*****
What type of music inspires your writing?
My taste in music varies depending on what I feel like each day, and I can honestly find a story plot out of anything at pretty much any time. I've written countless short stories that song lyrics have been the inspiration for. I once wrote a short piece for a contest that revolved around the song 'Brothers In Arms' by Dire Straits. My first full male/male story was inspired by the song 'Bittersweet' by Apocolyptica feat. Ville Valo (of HIM) & Lauri Ylonen (of The Rasmus). Both of these could be classed as rock, but the inspiration for La Cala came from a pop song: 'We're going to Ibiza' by Vengaboys.
How do you overcome writer's block?
A lot of the time, I don't. If a story and the characters aren't talking to me then I don't force them to, because I really don't want to force a story and end up with it sounding ridiculous. If I don't feel like writing, then I just take a break and sometimes I've been known to not write for weeks, even months at a time. However, sometimes the words are there and want to come out, but my fingers just can't be bothered to move. The way I overcome that is by calming the characters that are talking non-stop in my head. I do that by playing the theme tune to Last of the Mohican's. I close my eyes and listen to the music, then when it ends, I open my eyes and start typing straight away. It works a treat every time!
When you receive negative critism, how do you handle it?
The first instinct is to become upset. Someone says something bad about me or my work, it's natural to become disheartened. I just take a deep breath and reread what's been said. Most of the time the criticism is actually good because it points out errors you've made and gives you things to think about and work on. The main thing NOT to do is retaliate in a negative way. If you leave a reply at all, just simply say "thank you".
Which character is your favorite and why?
My favourite character in La Cala is Malachy Walsh. He starts out as the mysterious guy that Lance bumps into in a club during a theme party. The first thing Lance really notices about him is his tattoos and a pierced nipple. Malachy is actually the first character I've ever written with tattoos and a piercing.
What's your next project?
I'm currently working on a novel called Waves of Healing, though the title may change at a later date if something else grabs my attention. I don't want to spoil too much, but it's about the relationship between a paramedic and a surfing instructor, and is set near where I live. Thank you so much, N. Woods!!
